Failing!

Filed under: TV News > Media Minute > Gossip Girl

cwdead.jpg

Thery're gonna have to work harder next season!

According to the Wall Street Journal, the home of Gossip Girl, the CW network is tanking.

The CBS/Time Warner co-venture lost 28% of its target audience of 18 to 34 year olds so far this season.

And, its ratings during this month's "sweeps" period — the all-important measure upon which future advertising rates are set — are down about 22%.

According to an insider, if things don't turn around dramatically one of the big partners is going to walk away.

The WSJ also points out that part of CW's problem is that the demo its targeting spends a lot of its leisure time on the internet. Good for us!

And, the Writer's Strike probably hastened the departure of the demo from traditional TV to the net.

Any of you youngins have advice for the suits?

Wasn't the creator of this show talking crazy about a bunch of hollywood writers not long ago? haha, people are realizing he's a hack and Gossip Girl is just a rehash of the OC. LOSER-Face

They think they have it bad now. Wait until WWE Smackdown (one of their, if not the, highest rated show) leaves the network in September.

This is just my take, and I could be wrong:
The CW needs to quit with all the reality shows. Just because they had a FEW that were a hit, it does not mean that every conceivable one will be. Hello, Farmer Wants A Wife and Crowned? What WAS that? My guess is that the writers strike probably bought them down.
But shows like Smallville and One Tree Hill. Is it just me, or have they really gone down? It seems like they are just trying to broadcast a required number of episodes. Both of these were my favorite CW shows, I never understood why this season-especially OTH-they made them so darn boring. Smallville was a bit exciting in the middle, and OTH with its 5 year gap, but now the stories don't seem to want to take a chance or do anything new.
I actually think Gossip Girl is slowly becoming better. That and the new Beverley Hills might be what the CW needs to save it self.

Gossip Girl is an amazing show!! Its addicting. I don't think one person could watch all 16 epsidoes and not love it.. Its fun watching people be bitchy and by far is the hottest cast to date!! The Oc, and OTH has nothing on gossip girl.. and i love em both. :)

There are tons of people like me who like the show but HAVE NO IDEA WHEN IT'S ON because they don't advertise. People have better things to do than to put Gossip Girl in their "must do" list…

If they advertised the show as much as the OC (on billboards, tv ads, etc.) more people would tune in. And I agree with what other said about making Gossip Girl available online and for all countries, especially Canada. It really sucks not to be able to catch a show just because we're in Canada.

First of all they need to put the shows back up on the web!! Especially for those of us that can't watch it in it's new Monday night time slot!! They also need to get Chuck and Blair back to their usual bitchy self and patch things up with Serena and Dan. The whole Gorgina story line is boring, annoying, and is ruining the whole story, and Serena and Dan have no freakin balls!! GEEZE. The story line is sucking ass lately.

Posting your concerns on Perez Hilton isn't going to accomplish anything… Send emails and letters to the CW and voice your concerns about keeping GG on the air..Look up the CW address and send your letters to them. This will show the popularity of the show. The show is great. Great acting and writing and needs to be saved. I also feel Parez is making a big deal about it being low on the ratings. I hear it is one of the most popular shows on TV…Send your concerns and keep it going… The same thing happened to Savannah on the WB…Don't beleive everything you read on this site….He is all about drama…

they really need to put gossip girl online. i never watch tv shows on an actual tv because it's so much more convenient to watch everything online — it's not hard to find a show online, so if the CW doesn't put them up on its website (where at least they can make ad revenues) then people will just watch them for free somewhere else.

At least put the episodes up for sale on iTunes the next day…

put the show back online. it was doing great online. why did they take it off? the people watching the show are all young and watch online now. build your advertising revenue off of that…yeah it is less than TV, but better than making no money……its not rocket science….go where your audience is…

  33. Shauna says – reply to this

    233

They need to have their episodes online. For other shows online they have limited commercials, so they could still sell advertising that way. I stopped watching the show because they stopped showing episodes online. I don't have DVR and sometimes I work on Monday nights, and if I do, I miss the episode. I used to be able to catch up online, but now since I can't I stopped watching the show. Taking it offline was their biggest mistake!!!

i think the show needs to incorporate situations that most of us other people deal with in real life, something to relate to. The whole gay coming out deal is what brought my attention to the show, and i think they need to have more riskier situations such as that kinds of one in order to catch people. If there targeting from 18 to 34, then im guessing the parents on the show are the relations to the older crowd. They need to advertise riskier, i think Chase Crawford needs to get naked hahahahaha and so do the other people too!!!!!

  38. BOOBIE says – reply to this

    238

they have to make the shows available online because people just watch them illegally now. they should do it like how ABC and NBC do it because it is really user friendly and the fact that the video is streaming makes the commercials worth it because you don't have to wait for it to load. Really. That is what they need to do. I don't know a single person who actually watch the show on TV. they all watch it online somewhere. And I know at least 40 people who watch it.
I normally don't comment on these but Gossip Girl is the bane of my existence!

    239

Go back in time and not cancel Everwood

  40. Violet says – reply to this

    240

    Violet’s advice for network suits;

A lot of the demographic they are going for is ON THE GO. Go go go. Make episodes available on line, streaming as they air. SO that if you are out and about, you can watch the show as it happens on your mobile device.

Ditch the antiquated Neilson system. It doesn’t take into account a large section of your viewers.

Realize that America is not the only country watching your shows. You could gear a show’s on line advertizing to the country it is playing in. Use a service like HuLu.com or something. You can not skip the ads there. Give viewers the choice to watch a show with traditional commercial breaks or view the show after several commercials at the beginning, like movie trailers.

COUNT all your viewers, not just the ones parked in front of their TV sets.

You gotta think outside the box if you want to stay afloat. You have got to be convenient if you want your advertisers’ products to get out there.

  41. Alison says – reply to this

    241

The CW doesn't promote or fund the properly the tv shows that will help the network succeed. #1 Supernatural is the best show on TV yet their budget gets smaller every year. The only thing that will save the CW is to change who they are targeting.

Pick up Moonlight, since CBS canceled the People Choice Award winner (they are idiots) that will bring over 8 million viewers alone to the CW.

Then, have Moonlight on Thursdays at 8pm and Supernatural at 9pm. Those two shows put together will save the network and hopefully the CW will see that that is where the money needs to go! Not these stupid reality shows and teeny bopper shows that are all about the same thing!

High viewership translates into more money from advertisers!

Moonlight with Supernatural would be unstoppable and crush the competition!

  42. C says – reply to this

    242

The CW needs to put episodes online. My friend has to watch bootleg versions in Chinese with English subtitles in order to watch it! All other stations put the shows online, why doesn't the CW follow suit? I wouldn't even mind watching full length commericals, as long as I can watch it. And of the shows they air online, they need to improve their video playing system. It's horrible. They should make it like ABC's video viewing system. And they need to pick a time to air shows and stick with it.

I remember when the WB was the network to beat. They had all the best shows, Charmed, Gilmore Girls, Everwood, Smallville (few years back), etc, and than the WB went bye bye and now we are stuck with the CW. I was glad to read that they are having problems but I was even more shocked to read that they're trying to sell a Sunday night time slot to another network. WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY THINKING? They know how to save Sunday nights, they just have to get their heads out of their asses and put on the show that everyone is waiting for. The WB owned Sunday nights with one show, Charmed! The spin off is waiting to be produced, The Charmed Sons, www.thecharmedsons.com . The one episode the feature Chris and Wyatt together got over 6 million viewers. To me the answer is very clear and simple, but I can see how the CW board of educated people can have a time in deciding whats good for their network.

it's an effin awesome show. the reason why it's tanking is because the target audience is busy, especially during its monday timeslot. they had the episodes ONLINE which i think is a huuge part of it. now i've resorted to illegal downloads of it, which makes it difficult for CW to TRULY track its watchers. they should just put it back on their website and forget about the stupid advertisement issue.

Well, I love the CW, but I don't get local reception for the channel on my television and it's digital… growing up I always had the basic networks on local tv, even in the boonies, but not now… and there is no way that I'll pay for cable, but I do pay for wireless and I watch MTV, Vh1, CW channels online… so if the suits want ratings they need to make sure local television is free and we have access to it.

I think CW should buy the rights to a big sporting event, like all the other networks, have a morning talk show, an entertainment show (to promote their projects, like ABC, NBC, and CBS have, ) and diversify into other programming besides being the early nineties Fox network with all these soap opera like Melrose Places. Try animation. It worked for Fox. Try anything but more soaps. People miss a few episodes and then they realize that they really don't need to watch the show anyway.

There's no realism nor equality in this show. As you can see it's mainly about living the American dream where the dream is off the vanilla flavor only. You need other flavors of the rainbow to had some sense of reality and soul to the show. Not saying that you need to exploit a "token" character but even Southpark added Tweek, Butters, the handi-capable wheelchair bound Timmy and the comedian stylings of Jimmy to it's cast of characters. This is what it's lacking with this sad show besides true talent.

Well seeing how Moonlight just got cancelled from CBS..which was doing way better than Gossip Girl & all other shows in its time slot. The main reason this whole t.v. show has lost its appeal is because it is not staying true to the books. If the writers actually read the books the former readers may actually want to watch the show. STICK TO THE BASIC people and stop trying to sex everything up, gosh it's that simple. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out!! ALSO the books are sexy the way the they are, 16 years old are having sex and doing drugs and drinking.. i don't think we really need to do the whole OMFG thing to spice things up - get real - i speak for all of us, we are over paris hilton, move on already and be creative! - thank you!!!

I'm a huge gossip girl fan but i think they're turning their story line into another version of The OC. And look what happened to that show! Well if they didn't change the original airing date from Wednesday to who-knows-when, I would have never missed an episode. Once I miss a few episodes i find it pointless to waste time figuring out what I missed. Sucks too, because I watched that show every week from the first episode. Also, as PH points out, that whole break in between (I suppose from the writer's strike) totally confused me and made me disappointed b/c I wasn't sure when the next new episode was going to air. There needs to be a marathon so I can see all the missed episodes!!! that would be awesome!

CW needs more viewers Moonlight needs a new home it's a perfect match.

Oh do I have ideas and they should listen! I read all the Gossip Girl books and the TV show doesn't have the same appeal. First, they need some bigger names in the cast. They also need to stick to the books more. Pull a soap opera casting switch and hire a new Blair. Make Dan less hunky, isn't he supposed to be a like a dark, misunderstood one? Yeah, sooo believable (sarcasm). I think it might be in a really bad time slot too cuz I never watch it even though I think I would like to. I should run that show….geez

Never liked that shit, there's just a lack of quality shows out there right now. Prolly the only reason it even did decent in the first place. 90210 formula, but in New York?

Networks really need to start making cable tv available online. They should set it up so you can choose one or two channels if you like, instead of the package deals. Unfortunately I no longer have cable so I have to download my gossip girl!! I don't want them to cancel it!!
