Thery're gonna have to work harder next season!
According to the Wall Street Journal, the home of Gossip Girl, the CW network is tanking.
The CBS/Time Warner co-venture lost 28% of its target audience of 18 to 34 year olds so far this season.
And, its ratings during this month's "sweeps" period — the all-important measure upon which future advertising rates are set — are down about 22%.
According to an insider, if things don't turn around dramatically one of the big partners is going to walk away.
The WSJ also points out that part of CW's problem is that the demo its targeting spends a lot of its leisure time on the internet. Good for us!
And, the Writer's Strike probably hastened the departure of the demo from traditional TV to the net.
Any of you youngins have advice for the suits?

If they are failing they really need to pick up Moonlight because that would bring them 8-10 million new viewers. Pay attention CW, Moonlight fans are looking for a new home for their beloved show!!!!

I am convinced that the CW is failing so badly because of the timing of their shows. Gossip Girl is obviously their most lucrative investments; however, its slot was moved to Monday night where it conflicts with numerous amounts of shows such as Fox's Bones and CBS's HIMYM. All of these shows are also geared toward the CW demos. Meanwhile Tuesday and Wednesday nights are filled with awkard rich brats vying for the attention of a FARMER??? Granted he is gorgous…
Obviously someone in the company is not strategizing correctly. If it the CW goes down hill I am all for another company picking up GG. Those people are just to god damn gorgous to get cancelled after one season!
So, in other words, they're reading about and watching the exploits of the cast instead of watching the show for which they're supposedly famous? "Andy Warhol must be laughin' in his grave."
Put the previous episodes back on the cw website for when you miss the show. Every other network does it. It really pissed me off when they did that.
If they wouldn't have moved GG from Wednesday to Monday, the ratings wouldn't have sucked so bad. Alot of people watch Greek on Monday, and they don't want to be switching in between channels. I think if they would move the show to another day of the week that isn't as hectic, and if they would just put the show back up online the ratings would rise again quickly.

I DONT WATCH TV BECAUSE I CANT STAND THE COMMERCIALS, THEY CHOP UP THE TV SHOWS TOO MUCH, IT GETS ON MY NERVE AND I END UP JUST TURNING THE SHOW OFF.

the characters are pretty but have absolutely no substance. they don't connect with the viewer unlike shows like 90210 and the hills. Serena is Bland and flat with the same syrupy dialogue every frickin episode. If she is the "IT" girl she should have more charisma and she doesn't have any. She is pretty but that's about all…it's painful to watch her..it's liking watching one of the girls on Top Model trying to act when the only reason they are on TV ic because they are good looking. Also Georgina sucks…she sucked on Buffy and she sucks on GG. She tries way too hard and is ANNOYING.
My advice? Bring back Everwood bitches!
well maybe if they actually followed a SINGLE plot line from the books it wouldn't be so bad. The only things that are the same in both are the names of the characters. It's sad really

Pick up Moonlight and win 8-10 million new viewers.
Moonlight is an incredible show that won the People's Choice award and has 8 million viewers, however CBS cancelled it anyway. It would be a great asset to the CW or anyother network. The fans are so devoted they would follow it anywhere. Have you seen the online buzz? What is CW waiting for if it needs more viewers, especially with the low numbers of all it's shows compared to Moonlight?
The problem is it's Monday timeslot. Why they moved it from Wednesday, where it had no competition, is beyond me. Plus it needs to follow an established show like Top Model(like it did), Smallville, or even Beauty and the Geek that already has an audience so they are already watching CW. This isnt rocket science folks. xoxo
i am a youngin (16) and all i have to say is that the reason alot of my friends started watching it online was because of the timing. one tree hill, the hills, and gossip girl were all on monday! they lasted from 7-10 when you watched them in a row. if the networks dont remeber, youngins have to do homework and study! the networks need to work together on the timing to make sure their shows can possibly be watched!
They need to put the show back online on the CW website. Bad move. If people can't find it on your site online they will look else where, duh.

Do a couple of focus groups on the target demographic. Find out if this has to do with the demo or the story line. And find out quick! Women in the demo are on the net often so they have to drive GG net users to the TV, which is possible. THe writers strike has had a huge effect on many shows so increase the stakes and get them hooked again. But dont do shit without finding out whats on the target demo mind. BTW i watch it on the net

Oh yeah, online peeps matter. But networks don't take that into consideration. CBS canceled Moonlight, if CW takes it, it would boost their viewers by 8 million!!! It would be CW biggest hit. They could target us hip early 40ish women who ALSO are online alot, but want to see men like Alex O'Loughlin. Hello, I am here too!!

gossip girl is much better now then ever! its rating went down and no one watched it cuz of the huge writers strike , so no one was interested in it anymore but its like the best show now!
Serena and Dan are really boring characters. Dan acts more like a self-righteous parent than he does a teen. Is he Serena's dad? I feel like he wants to be.
Chuck and Blair are WAY more entertaining than the current plot line. They should do more together.
Georgina is a really boring character. Michelle Trachtenberg is typecast as a nice nerdy girl. She is not believable as a high-class manipulator.
Also, one of the characters needs to be likable, and relateable but none are. Who can relate to Serena? People arn't that brain dead. Dan is overbearing. Jenny got mean. I think Vanessa would have worked except she is not 'in their world' so she doesn't fit in the story.
I like the show, but I hope the writers get their act together soon because the plot post-strike is shit.
Is there a point to investing in getting attached to a show, only to have it cancelled before due time ie; Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls & Everwood to name a few…

They have lost most of their canadian audience, as the CW is not a common channel. We used to get gossip girl on CTV before the strike, but they never brought it back, so now we CAN'T watch it on TV
its because they don't play it in Canada anymore and they used to i watch it on an American channel i get all my friends have to watch on the internet
Even though this show is meant to be all about the upper class, it truly lacks class and character development. Who cares about these yuppies anyway? I try to watch it, but have found myself losing interest, much like the rest of the world. Too bad, though… I really thought that the show had potential. I miss the interesting, intelligent Veronica Mars. That was the show that the CW should have supported!
I think if they change the time slot and date, right now it's going ahead w/ Dancy w/ the Stars, I believe. So if they change it to Sunday night or a day that nothing good is on tv, it could have a shot.
Gossip girl is the best teen show out there right now! i love it i think they should stay on the air because its so awesome, they just need to stop making it like the oc..
well, im 15 years old. And it's true people my age barely watch tv, we spend all our time on aim, myspace, and facebook, theres just the exception for GOSSIP GIRL, and FAMILY GUY.
There are many factors, even though I've just started getting into it. It should change networks, move to a later time (I barely get home to catch it), develop juicier plots with multiple characters and not just focus on one at a time, and also stream online!

Lets get something straight….there are NO good shows on the CW and there never were. Maybe when it was the WB or whatever….they used to play old episodes of Dawsons Creek.
The CW network stopped showing the episodes on their website because the online viewers DID NOT COUNT in the ratings. So they mistakenly thoght that if they took the show off the website that the viewers would watch the show when it was actually ON!
Moving it to Monday night probably didn't help. The writer's strike definitely did not help either.
I'm as guilty as anyone else. I normally record my TV shows or download them from iTunes to watch at the gym.
I liked Veronica Mars too, but it never got good ratings either. That's why it got canceled. And as far as everyone who is mad that Gilmore Girls isn't on anymore-both the main actresses' contracts were up and they both did not want to continue the show.
All of these networks need to find a way to count online viewers!
i think that they need to get rid of Georgina. She's horrible and ruining the show. Michelle Trachtenberg = not cute at all and super annoying. She should reprise her role as Harriet the Spy , fall in a hole and never come back out.
Advice: Pick up "Moonlight" ASAP! Solution: A hit show that will instantly boost the ratings on the CW tremendously (i.e., 8 million viewers), and more delicious eye candy in the form of the Aussie hunk, Alex O'Loughlin! C'mon CW, do us all favor, and pick up "Moonlight!"

I'm 27 years old and addicted to Gossip Girl. I'm not ashamed to say it! But most of their other shows are crap. Less crappy reality shows would be a start. Seriously…Farmer Takes a Wife? You've got to be kidding me.

The CW needs to seriously work on two things: online video and picture quality on tv. My CW picture where I live is unbearable to watch - I simply can't watch it live, the sound is atrocious and the picture all grainy. And their online video content sucks - they offer next to nothing and they don't keep episodes up long enough to catch up if you miss something. Also, their video player is awful compared to any of the other networks. I like at least a few shows on the CW, but other than catching my shows in 5 parters on YouTube, I can't watch them.

I am 32 and I love this show. It's definitely one that gets Tivo'd every week! I agree all the networks need to post their episodes online. Once someone misses an episode or 2 they feel like they can't catch back up.
They don't realize most people watch the show online. CW don't play the full episodes online, but sooo many people watch it in segments on youTube. They need to change things around and figure out how to market online viewers better.

Gossip Girl is great and obviously there most important show. However, the switch to monday night at 8:00 sucks.
They need to show it on channels available to everyone, not just CW.
Here is a big suggestion… give us some sort of Charmed spin off, and promote it heavily! I think a big part of the problem, is that when they merged, they dropped alot of the programs that had a big fan base! Veronica Mars, Charmed…
the CW sucks first of all. secondly, if GG is their cash cow that's pretty sad considering their ratings are in the 3-4 million range. the OC got cancelled last season with MORE viewers per epi than that! GG is a decent enough show (the OC was WAAAYYY better especially in the beginning of the series) but anyways, screw the CW who cares about their ratings & they have no good shows anyways so that channel NEVER gets turned on, on my TV…so I forget it's even there. get GG off this network - if it was on FOX it could do much better especially in a different time slot & lots of advertising
i don't watch anymore cause they don't post the full length show on their website anymore…. i'm not gonna arrange my schedule around the show, so I'd always watch it online when I had time

Everybody Hates Chris is the best show on the network and they hide it on Sunday nights. They should schedule it during the week and do lot of promos for it. Also, more promos for GG - I never know when it's on.
Advice to suits: enough with the procedurals! and p.s. I bet if CBS would let CW have the show 'Moonlight', the CW's ratings would go up! (The show has an average of 7.5 million viewers; a hell of a lot more than Gossip Girl!).
Perez, why haven't you posted anything about how the cast and crew of Moonlight got SCREWED by CBS this week despite fan support and consistent ratings??? I would think all the rumblings of behind the scenes hirings/firings/power plays would be juicy enough gossip for you!!!
CW should pick up Moonlight and add 8 million viewers who will watch other CW shows out of appreciation.

make it an internet network… If the demographic is there why not make it an internet network showing commericials with top quality streaming. It could also be global pinpointing the area the person is in and showing related ads… it would cut down costs and everyone i know already watches gg on the internet anyway… tv's on our time now.
Maybe its failing because its just another stereotypical show that can be summed up with three words "rich white kids" Im sorry but the world is ready for something different than 90210, followed by saved by the bell, The. If you want my opinion the show is very good, and should not be cancled or taken off the air. Why does everyone think thats its not a good show, its actually very good, plus the show is kind of a teen serious.
They shouldn't have it on the CW… A lot of people don't even get that channel.

Distraught Moonlight fans desperately seeking a second season for the show spent Thursday and Friday calling an 818 number provided by CBS. All they asked was our ages and where we lived. Everyone I know who called is between 18 and 40. SURELY CW brass and MRC execs could get the demographics from those calls from CBS. That coveted age group loves the show and actively supports advertisers. Just adding that one wildly popular show would increase CW ratings significantly. Shows in CW have not had a decent rating since they targeted audiences 18-34. Mr. Hilton, you asked for advice, so here it is. CBS just foolishly canceled a fan-favored show, Moonlight, citing reason as low rating. Moonlight won the People's Choice Award for Best New Drama, it had an average of 8 million viewers. Moonlight had consistently maintained first place for the coveted demography of 18-49 on Friday at 9 p.m.. Friday at 9 p.m. is considered as a "death spot" for television show. CW should consider bringing Moonlight in to drum up the rating. Those 8 million viewers will follow Moonlight wherever it goes. Moonlight should pair perfectly with "Reaper".
