Failing!

Filed under: TV News > Media Minute > Gossip Girl

cwdead.jpg

Thery're gonna have to work harder next season!

According to the Wall Street Journal, the home of Gossip Girl, the CW network is tanking.

The CBS/Time Warner co-venture lost 28% of its target audience of 18 to 34 year olds so far this season.

And, its ratings during this month's "sweeps" period — the all-important measure upon which future advertising rates are set — are down about 22%.

According to an insider, if things don't turn around dramatically one of the big partners is going to walk away.

The WSJ also points out that part of CW's problem is that the demo its targeting spends a lot of its leisure time on the internet. Good for us!

And, the Writer's Strike probably hastened the departure of the demo from traditional TV to the net.

Any of you youngins have advice for the suits?

count the online viewers…everyone i know watches it online. or make the time slot for gossip girl later into the night, 8 is to early for the kind of viewers there trying to attract, wasnt it 9 earlier this season?

Make better shows! and don't show the same 3 Family Guy episodes every freaking day, that's the only reason I watch that channel any more!!!

To solve the rating problem at CW, just bring in MOONLIGHT. It had an average of 8 million viewers on Friday nights at CBS. Of course, CBS was dumb to cancel it, citing low rating!! The 8 million fans will follow MOONLIGHT to CW if it would wisely picks it up.

They should pick up that awesome CBS show moonlight. It would soo pick up their ratings!!

CHANGE THE DAY AND TIME. MONDAYS AT 8 IS A TERRIBLE TIME SLOT. TOO MANY OTHER SHOWS ARE ON AT THAT TIME. THEY SHOULD GO BACK TO WEDNESDAYS AT 9

They have wayyyyyyyyy too many reality shows now and honestly thats not what I wanna watch!!! After Smallville ends next season they will seriously loose half of their audience! But if One Tree Hill and Supernatural can hold strong they should be ok….those will be the only 2 orignal WB shows

  12. Lizz says – reply to this

    512

maybe they can save money by spending less on the designer clothes,
everyone just watches for the drama anyway.
and gossip girl really is the only good show on that network
and putting episodes online is wise because with my prep school homework load i can't watch anything until the the weekends…online and i know soooo many other girls who feel the same way.

Re: Kevin – Number 474, I'm just a humble white guy—but the shows you named off are exactly what's wrong with TV. You named off shows, and precisely the type of shows, that I hate. Actually those shows are even insulting to whites. Mindless white spoiled brats engaging in self-absorbed drama. With no concern, nor even consciousness, about what's going on in the bigger world. No intelligence nor education, just sugary sweet caricatures living pampered privileged, unrealistic lives.

there are a couple of things that need to change for GG. First of all, the CW sucks and it needs to be on abc or something. Second, it needs to be on a different night, and third– they need to have episodes online!

    517

the show is amazing, they just need to get rid of georgina
if she screws things up for everyone it will make people stop watching
she shouldn't be on the show at all she doesn't even make it interesting.

  18. Liz says – reply to this

    518

Diversity. If no one is watching "Gossip Girl" then don't make three other shows exactly like it/trying to compliment it. Don't put your strongest show line up (Supernatural/Smallville) on a night it's going to guarentee to get slaughtered (Thursdays, facing NBC Comedy and ABC's Grey's.)

And stop making every single show a showcase for hot girls! The great part about Gilmore Girls was that women looked normal! NORMAL! Get rid of Dawn O and bring in someone who will know what they're doing!!

    526

I would assume that Gossip Girl is tanking because it's just like every other so called "reality show" out there. I wouldn't watch it. Why would I want to watch a bunch of teenies and twenties crying and whining about how horrible their lives are? I need a hero, I need some hope, and I need a character that will help me feel empowered, not helpless. I found that in the People's Choice Award Winner, and SCI-FI male award for Mick St. John (Alex)….MOONLIGHT! That's right our 7 to 8 million viewers strong are willing to follow the show to any network that picks it up. Considering that the biggest ratings winners on the CW are around 2 to 3 million. I would have to say that they would have some fresh blood visiting their network just for Moonlight and if they pair the show up with…hmmm……let's say Supernatural….they may have them 2 hot shows. In my opinion Supernatural is a pretty cool show and I'm thinking many of the people who like Moonlight would love to stick their fangs into that show, too. Trust me, Moonlight fans have put together millions of people all over the world, and millions have given blood all over our country, literally, for the show (Blood Drives with the Red Cross). Of course, there is always USA and SCI-FI. Battlestar Gallactica is in its final season….Moonlight is considered a SCI FI show as well; maybe they would enjoy some instant ratings for their network. Just a thought/suggestion.

I think that they should put the show on later because at 8 I know that a lot of college students are either working or in a study group. It should start at 9. Also I know that it is on at the same time as Greek which is probably another problem

i personally thought that the merge of upn and the wb, would lead to a terrible fate, especially when you merge a channel targeted at black people with one targeted at white; it just doesnt mix. UPN was a wannabe BET, and it just messed up the CW, with it's stupid shows, like…i dont even know, it's just terrible. i only watch the shows that were once on the WB. i suggest that the CW, drop all the shows that were once on UPN, and just change it back to the WB

Well, as a 27 year old internet addict, I would say that they need to broaden their scope (and increase viewers obviously). They should pick up "Moonlight" since CBS canceled it. If even half of the 8 million viewers make the switch, I'm sure it would drastically improve CW's ratings.

since they took the full episodes offline, anyone that misses it has to buy it on itunes or wait until next sunday to see it. i usually work sunday & monday nights, so i have to buy them which is ridiculous. why are they making it so hard for us to watch their show?? it's $2 to buy on itunes, although it's FREE to watch on tv. they piss me off

Canadians cant watch Gossip Girl because CTV doesnt air the new episodes yet! ( www.ctv.ca ) We have to watch it online at either www.surfthechannel.com or www.watchgossipgirl.com because CW's website doesnt allow Canadians to watch the episodes on their website!

Canadians cant get the CW channel and alot of fans are anticipating the return of GG on CTV!!!! SO there is your answer to the drop of Gossip Girl… After the whole writer's strike, CTV hasnt been airing any new episodes and therefore you are loosing alot of Canadian fans which makes ratings drop!

  41. aj says – reply to this

    541

i agree on the online thing. not only were many of us used to catching up on missed episodes online, but now that it's not online and we can't catch up it's hard to watch it on television two to three episodes later. it should be online again, and back to wednesday nights=)

    543

Tell the CW to pickup Moonlight since it is now looking for a new home after CBS cancelled it! Moonlight has more than twice the number of viewers than CW's current highest rating show Gossip Girl! So why wouldn't CW want to pick up Moonlight which has an existing fan base that are passionate about the show and will follow it to any network that will pick it up?? Come on CW step up and save Moonlight… the amount of viewers it will attract will be worth your while!!

When it first came on I watched the show faithfully, but that was when it was on wednesdays at 9pm. When it came back on, I think they made the mistake of putting in on Mondays at 8pm. There's so many other shows that come on that day and at that time, that I think may be better. They should have kept it on Wednesday's at 9am.

Yes, There are at least 8 millions younins who would gladly help give CW higher ratings, if they would put MOONLIGHT in their line-up.

MOONLIGHT! 8 million viewers are willing to follow the show to any network that picks it up. Give it much consideration CW

Invest more in online television, which is not ONLY accessible to the US. Currently, only US citizens can watch Gossip Girl via WB's website. Thus, people like me have to download the show illegally to get a hold of it, since it hasn't aired on CTV yet (CTV is unfortunately currently airing American Idol in its place. gross)

    560

their demographic is between ages of 18-34, and they dont have the shows online? what are they thinking? also, if the demo is 18-34 then why do they have after school specials on? gossip girl, tree hill etc are immature (in terms of the story line) i'm 25 and i'm completely bored by the story lines on these shows (seen it, done it). i'd like to see them venture into new territories, not just soap opera shows, but other venues (i.e. music). they are a young network, why not try something "out there"? (i.e. fox w/ The Simpsons, tracy ullman show).
but importantly they should put the shows online, to not do so, is retarded.

ok they definitley need to put the show back on line because people are busy sometimes and only being able to watch it with two oppurtunities isnt that great and people also forgot it was on. They also need to advertise alot mmore like on alot of different websites the ffact that perez wrote about them will prolly give them more viewers like i didnt even kno the season started again until my sister told me and she didnt kno until one of her friends told her so liike i misdde dlike the first two episodes tear tear

    572

I personally have satellite so I don't get the CW on my tv…hence the reason I have to watch it online. Maybe they need to start thinking about the online viewers.
They have to realize not everyone gets this channel on their tv. If I had the CW I would totally watch it more. But I don't so I have to buy it from ITunes or watch stuff online.

  73. Kelly says – reply to this

    573

My advice would be to change the show to another day.
This show is on at the same time as GREEK on ABC family, which is hugely popular where I'm from. A lot of my friends have to debate over which show they choose to watch, so they tend to switch on and off.
I agree with consensus that the show needs to be more readily available on iTunes or online. It takes twice as long to update Gossip Girl onto iTunes as it does for the majority of other shows.
Otherwise, I think that Gossip Girl is a great show. Just move it to a day where the general teen population isn't so conflicted …. or at least to a different time.

Great show, love the storyline- the thing is, is that the time keeps changing, and monday night is such a shitty time for the show- and they need a LOT more advertising to say WHEN the show is on… Cause I keep forgetting. So it's advertising's fault, not the show.

I, and 7,999,999 other would be viewers can tell the CW how to improve their ratings - pick up Moonlight! CBS haven't got a clue what they've dropped, but it would work in the CW's favour.

Eight million viewers all ready to go wherever their show lands (and yes, they did come back after the writer's strike), it consistently won the horrible 9pm Friday night slot and the 18-49 demo. Now isn't that just what this ailing network needs?

And who knows how any other shows we'd stick around and watch?

The ball is in the CWE's court now… let's see if common sense prevails!

  81. Kmo says – reply to this

    581

I think the reason they're tanking now is the change in time and date- who the heck watches TV on Sunday at 6?? I missed the first 2 episodes when the season came back because I didn't even know it was on.

I suggest the CW take up Moonlight. The best rated show on the CW right now is 2.5 million per week on the Nielsen ratings. Moonlight is raking in just under 8 million per week! This would bring a whole new audience to the CW and ultimately bring the ratings up for its other shows. Since CBS has let go of such an asset, the CW would greatly benefit from having Moonlight on their side!

There is nothing interesting on the plot with Georgina and michelle trachtenberg (sp?) is not a very interesting character. the story was much more interesting with the storylines of blair and chuck and nate. Vannessa is also another blah character. Serena and Dan's story is just over the top. Lily and Rufus's story is also more interesting. Serena's story is just overdramatic and bland.

BRING MOONLIGHT TO CW! Shop around and bring on shows that have large followings, and pair it with Supernatural, the only show I watch on CW. Keep quality television alive and get rid of the reality tv and faux reality tv shows!

  92. Eryn says – reply to this

    592

It's not the strike, it's not the internet. As a fan of many CW shows over the years, their writing and storylines have sunk into the crapper. Gossip girl is cliche and 10 minutes into the episode you know how it's going to end. Smallville has detoured so far from the Superboy plot that it makes it pointless to have him become Superman. I mean Lex knowing who he really is before the years in the tights? Also since returning from hiatus for most of these shows, they have been slow and choppy, instead of vamping it up they went dull and lost all action. One Tree Hill did the same… came in strong and then after about 5 episodes started to decline into annoying, and predictable. Come on do you really think Dan is going to die? Do you really think they would have had the Ravens lose with Lucas, Skills and Nate as their coaches. All new to it? Of course Jamie was kidnapped by the nanny, we all saw that coming the second episode the nanny appeared in.

    THERE IS NO REALISM

Cw should pick up Moonlight. CBS were idiots to drop it. Moonlight comes with a huge loyal fan base and what if they showed it alongside Supernatural? how much of a genius move would that be?

I have an idea! Moonlight got dumped by CBS (stupid, stupid), and CW should take it up! It has over 8 million viewers, and an extreme following.

That's more that ALL their shows. Nothing gets above 4 million viewers!

they need to market more to different audiences (not just the teens of New York) they should also distribute them online and get advertisers there

The highest rated show on the CW was always Smallville! They did a terrible job with it!! People wanted to see Clark Kent and Lana Lang together and they never delivered properly!! And now with a few of the cast members gone and Kristin Kreuk only coming back for a few limited episodes, you can kiss Smallville goodbye! And with it, the CW!!!
