Failing!

Filed under: TV News > Media Minute > Gossip Girl

cwdead.jpg

Thery're gonna have to work harder next season!

According to the Wall Street Journal, the home of Gossip Girl, the CW network is tanking.

The CBS/Time Warner co-venture lost 28% of its target audience of 18 to 34 year olds so far this season.

And, its ratings during this month's "sweeps" period — the all-important measure upon which future advertising rates are set — are down about 22%.

According to an insider, if things don't turn around dramatically one of the big partners is going to walk away.

The WSJ also points out that part of CW's problem is that the demo its targeting spends a lot of its leisure time on the internet. Good for us!

And, the Writer's Strike probably hastened the departure of the demo from traditional TV to the net.

Any of you youngins have advice for the suits?

maybe if the show didn't suck so much it would do better. :)

its NOTHING like the books, which is why I don't watch it.

CW is failing because it started focusing its programming guide on crap reality shows like "Farmer Takes A Wife" and took away quality programming like Veronica Mars…They need to look at their demographic and think… which show would I rather watch? Are the same people going to be interested in ANTM as are watching Reaper?

    Please..

YES! CW suits, BUY THE SHOW MOONLIGHT! You automatically increase your viewers by 8 million!!

First, make the site something you have to sign into. That way they can see how many hits the online episodes are getting. Don't allow people to stay logged in either.
THEN, they should make the episodes something to subscribe to and if it's popular enough, make there be a small price to pay. Allow subscribers to watch an episode or two free first (to make sure they are really interested and don't feel cheated).
That would probably help things a lot.

Make good shows! All the shows on the CW suck and have shitty writing EXCEPT for Supernatural and America's next top model. They should do focus groups on which shows people actually like, and stop assuming that kids want to watch confused teens fuck around and do stupid things (gossip girl, one tree hill)….Hence the OC was short lived…. Good writing! Stop assuming us kids are stupid! And if you're going to do focus on teen lives, make interesting dialogue thats not completely ridiculous and we can't understand.

Supernatural is really really good with awesome writing….and it encompases action and great teen angst/dialogue. Its like a soap opera with action and hot guys….. They should move that show to a better spot!
Why do you make supernatural compete with LOST! Thats why no one is watching!!!

have you seen supernatural? its the only one with still really good plot and dialogue/writing. I was a fan of smallville til the writing started to suck

I've never really liked Michelle Trachtenberg (Georgina). Only on Harriet & The Spy when I was like 6, but that's about it. When I saw her premiere on TRL before the show came out- she was flattering herself and annoying. Her character makes my friends and I hate watching the show. Same with Vanessa. GG is addicting but has TOO many unnessesary drama and the character Serena, doesn't have rational thought which pisses everyone off. Who lets someone (Georgina) run over them for so long and keep it a secret? You know the first thing a REAL person would do is tell Georgina to back off and tell her friends and ask for help ASAP. The solution….new screen writers and actresses…

  12. Kendra says – reply to this

I THINK THEY SHOULD MOVE IT TO MTV. It's not the show its the channel.

Lets see when did the ratings fall. When new episodes came out, what was the difference. Oh yeah, Carrie Underwood dumped Chace Crawford cheating butt.
You don't mess with Carrie. I bet you didn't realize how many fans she has but they were all supporting Chace. Chace was riding her coat tails. He was in every magazine and now he might be in one for some lame fashion show he attended.
He screwed hisself and GossipGirl. Stay away from waitresses and playboy bunnies. Cheaters are scum.

Move it from the 9pm spot where it's competing Against The Hills. The two shows share the same demo group. And The Hill's is a ratings Titan. Also put it back on the Web, because were more likely to watch it on the web anyways and bring it back to Canada. Right now its a TIVO type show, a secondary option.

They also need to strengthen the writing. Every other show they are at some party where some type of drama goes down. That gets tired real fast. It's like watching repeats of the same episode.

The main problem with this show is:
It takes elements from old shows that we had seen hundreds of times.
The poor girl in the rich kids school (Beverly Hills 90210)
The gossip is a new element but the stories are just the same, we had seen this in Melrose place.

heres some advice for the suits

    LESS OF THE FREAKIN HIATUS'S!!!

these 3 month breaks (or however long they last) have gotta stop. they're killing audiences and therefore killing decent shows. the writers strike came at a bad time because it was just after the hiatus..and they knew that. and thats why they did it at the time.

stop being stingy. and move production earlier so no hiatus' are needed! but do something forgodsakes because tv shows are going down the crapper because of them.

  27. Maria says – reply to this

    627

This network is failing and to think that instead of automatically picking up Moonlight after it was cancelled, they are THINKING about picking it up.
Never before has a show had such a following as this one. It is unbelievable.
There are masses of fans that will follow this show wherever it goes, therefore network ratings will fly through the roof for who ever picks it up. It won peoples choice awards for best new drama and people have been donating blood in it's name. I don't understand why they haven't picked it up, maybe because they want a new show in it's place? I think that is a grave mistake. Because that show would have to build a fan base and gain word of mouth for people to watch it (not mention the risk they would be taking, airing a new show that people may not like) while Moonlight already has an incredibly tremendous, extremely loyal, fan base/following, a fan base/following that will easily pull in around 8 million views the least and has had word of mouth and is already so passionately adored. What are they thinking?! It has all the qualities that a show needs for everyone to enjoy and to carry on for many seasons to come, it has romance, action, comedy, drama, style, beautiful people and much more. What more could you ask for? There is no sane reason why they should not pick up this show! For for christ's sakes they need the views!

Plus a lot of people watched the first 3 episode's and gave up…only now is it starting to get better, also i dont think Georgina is doing the show any favours…nobody likes her!! Michelle Trachtenburg is not a very good actress either! X x X

  34. talia says – reply to this

    634

If they want the show to do well they need to focus more on the main 4: Chuck, Serena BLair and Nathan. The rest just take away. They can have other storylines of course but the 4 need to stay a strong unit

  35. jessica says – reply to this

    635

My advice for the suits? Know your target audience better.

For one, get rid of UPN transferred shows that NOBODY watches (i.e. Everybody Hates Chris and Girlfriends, etc.). Stop relying on Gossip Girl to be your savior and advertise some of the shows you have that are cult classics (i.e. Supernatural). Try something new and creative. It's getting old watching shows about High Schoolers that are completely unrealistic.

The CW used to allow you to watch the previous week's episode online, but stopped doing this after the show returned from the writer's strike. I used to tune in whenever I could and watch the episodes that I missed online, but now that they don't play them online I don't bother. They should post the shows online again!

    643

    KEEP GOSSIP GIRL RUNNING!!!

its so amazingly good. theres no way you can say that its not good because every single episode has some type of scandal in it and makes you want to watch it more and anticipate the next episode. the show is HUGE in the nj/ny area, especially with kids in high schools. i know it for a fact, because i am in high school and NO ONE ever stops talking about it. we are all close enough to the city to actually go to the places they film at, and the majority of the places they film at, we've been there before. it makes it really cool and interesting how these directors and producers know all the best places to go in the city, and normal people like stuff are around there all the time. gossip girl has only been on for one season. they need to give it a second chance because they could have the best future seasons ever and never know it because they gave up on it.

The CW should expand there demographics and pick up a series like MOONLIGHT. It has a loyal and vocal fan base and stars that are generating media attention. The CW can't buy publicity like this. Other networks could benefit from the series and fans that CBS threw away!

Well the answer is easy.. they need to kill Marissa… ooopppssss I mean Serena… really? who here thinks that Blake Lively is even closer to be cute??? she is soooo disgusting I hate just looking at her, her face is pathetic and that molar is so ewwwwww how come she can be an it girl with that face, facial expressions and attitude? she acts like she is always high!!!!
They should focus the whole story on Blair, she has a lot of potential + the Chuck thingy going on is just wonderful, hot and steamy… such a big change from Serena and Dan… too goody goody and too lame!

    656

The CW should pick up "Moonlight." Its expensive cost and its anemic ratings will help kill the CW network and put it out of its misery.

To speed things up even more, the CW should cancel all of its existing shows, start new seasons of "Girls Club," "Emily's Reasons Why Not," "Secret Talents of the Stars," "Quarterlife," "Cavemen," and "Miss Guided," and create a reality show about the behind-the-scenes drama of working at a McDonald's.

The tentpole CW series could be a live action show about the lives of the paddle sticks in the old Atari video game "Pong," and it would be titled "Pong: Extreme Impact." Uwe Boll could be the showrunner. Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren could play the paddles, and the pilot would be modeled after "Universal Soldier." Tara Reid could play the ball to create a love triangle with the paddles while also being a member of three-person fighting force with the paddles. Countinuing episodes would feature a sinister video game corporation attempting to track the three main characters down to capture them and place them back inside an Atari cartridge. The fight scenes would be choreographed by Paula Abdul.

I think the CW would be able to close shop in about a month under that plan, but acquiring "Moonlight" would be the first step.

  57. Rachel says – reply to this

    658

You asked for a tip, and I'll give you one. It is time for a Gotham tv show. Batman Year One, if you will. It should follow the college life of a young Bruce Wayne, ala Smallville, as he is learning how to become Batman, years before he puts on the suit or takes on the mantle of the Bat.

It could be a big hit, and with Smallville coming up on its last season soon, they might as well just do it.

CW should pick up MOONLIGHT - it is by far one of the best shows on tv, and CBS really screwed up by cancelling it and losing 8 million viewers. Perez, see what you can do to at least get someone to pay attention to the fans!

  61. Ciera says – reply to this

    661

Sure, sometimes trash ads bring in the viewers but sometimes it really turns people off, especially parents. GG has really good story lines that aren't half as sleezy as portrayed on the CW commercials. They could targets more audiences 14-17 if they toned down the sex in their advertising. Lots of kids have to sneak and watch it online cause their parents don't let them watch it on T.V… It is a television show about teens mind you. Would be nice if parents felt comfortable with their TEENS watching it.

  63. This is What Happens... says – reply to this

    663

This is What Happens when you get rid of all the black programming from UPN because they think blacks don't watch TV, Duh. Also, they need to realize most people get their TV shows off the internets cause DVRs and Tivo is too expensive. They need to count internet hits as part of ratings. Neilsen needs to enter the 20th century before they tiptoe into the 21st. I hope the CW tanks for stupidity alone. There's not one show on that network I watch.

  64. Lyn says – reply to this

    664

Moonlight. Moonlight. Moonlight. Pick up Moonlight with its 8 million viewers.

…and forget all that age-based demo crap. These days not just youngins are going to the net. Many of us oldins watch shows (and esp Moonlight) either on or via the net. I download from amazon unbox and itunes (both for the same show if (like Moonlight) it is a favorite.

Oh, and forget Nielsen too. Like that is relevant any more.

  65. AshN says – reply to this

    665

The CW should pick up Moonlight for an instant ratings boost! That pickup, plus 90210 will help them out tremedously! Moonlight fans will bring 8m viewers to CW, and some of them are sure to stay for other shows on the network.

Well, kids today expect entertainment to be free and immediate. They dont even want to TiVo anything. So, the industry has to make interent streams/shows their future revenue source.

I do see a day [sadly] when there is no more "new fall TV season", music albums for sale at stores, and even movie theaters!! Since the yonger gen as they age [yes, you will kiddies] will demand online shows, songs and movies.

I just don't see how watching a new hit movie on an I-phone, or in a car DVD player is as good as the big screen with popcorn, but oh well, life goes on!

Well when they pull stunts like canceling a terrific show like Moonlight, what do they expect - and I'm NOT a youngin', but my daughter is & all her friends (and mine) also watched the show. We will absolutely not watch any of the 6 or so shows they picked up in potential place of it. Actually, if it wasn't for NCIS & Numbers now, we're not interested in CBS at all.

Senreas brother is supposed to be the hottest guy in the world and is older then senrea and has a fling with blair…

Gossip Girl is amazing! I am suprised every week, they always come out on top. I do not believe this, they will have many more seasons, slash the cast is hot.

    683

this is a shame. i like gossip girl a lot. i fall within their target, and actually…i watch gossip girl online b/c i have class when it's on tv an i can't wait for the rerun.

i think the problem is that it started right before the writers strike. there needs to be a marathon, if they haven't done it already. also, these kids are on all the magazines, but they need to be on oprah!!!! i don't know what the problem is. it's a nice, juicy show for young people w/ a great wardrobe. it just needs to catch on!

maybe the cw should start offering the show on cwtv.com so people can at least try it out online.

  84. c. says – reply to this

    684

i just read some of the other comments…and i'm glad other people are saying the cw should offer these shows online. i guess i'm not the only one watching practically all my tv online these days. i watched almost all big brother eps online b/c of school. i also watch all thursday tv, like 30 rock, scrubs, the office, online b/c i had to watch survivor on ch 2! then i watched the bachelor online too. i also watch bad girls club online, one tree hill online (hellloo), america's next top model online (on another site b/c the cw doesn't offer full eps online anymore)..i watch top chef and project runway online (even though bravo doesn't offer online - that's another beef i have, but that's cable, so i can understand..) and i alsoooo watch the real world and the hills and the paper online!! if everyone's watching tv online, and there's an add b/t each scene, that's something to look into! i also like that some of these networks post by midnight the day the show was aired (like cbs) or at least by the same time next day (like nbc). ok, now i'm done. look forward to see gg online soon and help support it's success!

people are getting sick of watching the social life of the rich. the hills is so fake, it might as well be the gossip girls of the west coast. also, ANTM is getting less and less entertaining.

But, what about the thing that the writer of GG said about having big numbers in iTunes (check out their top ten in tv shows) and not losing viewers. He said in Nylon Magazine that he tought young people r not watching tv these days, they watch their fav shows in the net.

CW pick up the show "Moonlight" from CBS; they cancelled it and there are alot of disappointed fans (8 million to be exact), me being one of them. I think Moonlight is a great show that can hold up the ratings; it's really disappointing when we, the fans start getting into a show that's suddenly cancelled (why would we watch any new shows if they're going to be cancelled, networks are so unpredictable=disappointment) The show's producer is Joel Silver, same producer of Veronica Mars, so if you were a fan of Mars you will like Moonlight.

Easy solution to CW's problem; PICK UP MOONLIGHT!!! By doing this the network will gain 8 million new viewers and we can all have our Moonlight back!!! SEASON 2!!! There are 8 million VERY devoted fans dying to see what happens to MickBeth!

Perez, por favor, help us get Moonlight to season 2!!! Pretty please!

I watched back when they had full episodes online, and I get the feeling that a large percentage of the audience did so as well. Once they took the show off the internet I stopped watching every episode since I can't always be home to see it. A lot of the target audience isn't going to be at home to watch the show when it airs. Making the episodes available online and on-demand makes sense for their target audience. Plus, if the network bothered to count online viewers and Tivo subscriptions, they would probably find that their numbers are higher. They're going about things all wrong and in an obsolete manner.

The big problem is that Serena, the supposed heroine of the show, does not deliver in the episodes. She just comes across as boring and washed up. Blair is carrying much of the episodes and she's stealing the show from Serena, thank goodness, because the actress who plays Blair can ACTUALLY act. The cast is very beautiful but the show's producers can't just rely on that because it won't make up for some of the boring acting.

Maybe the CW would boost its ratings to more than 8 million per episode if it picked up the now cancelled, but wonderful Moonlight!!!!!!!!

but the real crime is that moonlight did not get a second season, this is truly an amazing show with great characters, how can the networks not appreciate that we can really invest ourselves in a new show, i think that moonlight fans have certainly shown themselves to be committed to the continuing of this fantastic show.

Bring back Gilmore girls. It was positive and fun to watch, you fell in love with the Characters. Gossip girl is depressing, and dark with no happy moments. Even Dawsons Creek had some possitive moments, and likable characters.
