On May 31st, fans of super Emo group My Chemical Romance are planning to march across London to protest what they consider to be the unfair depiction of the band in the British media.
The march will start at Hyde Park's West Pond and end outside the offices of The Daily Mail, who organizers call the 'worst' offender in the media.
The newspaper recently anointed My Chemical Romance a 'suicide cult' band in its reports covering the suicide of a 13-year old British girl named Hannah Bond.
Three hundred fans are reportedly confirmed to march.

I am a 44 yr old mother of two teenager boys and I also like MCR…have gone to two of their concerts in the last year. I saw people of all ages and backgrounds at both of the concerts. People can find angst in almost any type of song unless it's bubblegum pop.
The only comment I'll make about MCR being slightly emo is the blood slash symbols that are found on their album covers and some promo stuff. But, when we last went to the concert…the lead singer was definitely not promoting harm in his concert and actually was just the opposite.

my friend committed suicide, and it wasn't because he listened to emo, or rock, or rap or any other form of music. It was because he was emotionally lost. The Media are just scared that a thirteen year old had the emotional trauma to do this to themselves. Everyone is just frightened, and will look for any means outlet to place blame. And its unfortunate that these artists are the ones that bear the blunt of this anger.

i really dont like what is labeled "emo music" (even though it is used incorrectly most of the time), but people must STOP BLAMING THE DAMN MUSIC!! its been something going on for ages in so many genres. raise your damn kids right and listen to them when they need to be heard dumbasses and quit laying the blame elsewhere. Before MCR it was Marylin Manson (and to some degree it still is), before that it was Black Sabbath, Judas Priest….when a kid has emotional issues, angry, upset, and often ignorant parents look to blame something (anything!) for their child's issues and in some cases, suicides. It's sad, but true.

I think this is a gread idea.. My Chemical Romance is my favorite band, so having other MCR fans take a stand and do what they believe in is awesome.

As for the 13 year old girl who killed herself.. she was hurting and nobody helped her.

I am a huge fan of My Chem, but this whole thing makes me laugh, and it kinda makes me want to run away in shame.
Us fans should be protesting stuff that actually matters. The band would be much more proud if they saw us protesting violence, rather than their name. They even said themselves, they don't care what others think.

I read the attached article and I have to say, WHATS WRONG WITH THIS WORLD!!!!!! Whenever there is a problem with kids they blame the music, this dates back to the 60's when they said the music influenced the kids to do drugs, all the way through the 90's with Marilyn Manson and Columbine! when are authority figures going to realize that the music doesnt kill PEOPLE KILL! When kids are depressed they are impressionable..they are at higher risk to do irrational things, this I agree with. But I know that kids are capable of making good decisions. MCR aside, I would like to add that I agree with most people here saying that kids who kill themselves do so because they are "emotionally lost" as one person said (sorry, don't remember your pen name), not because the music they listen to encourages them to. People have been claiming since controversial music first came out (about the 50s or 60s) that the music encourages dangerous behavior. One thing you have to keep in mind is that, even if some listeners do engage in the dangerous behavior addressed in the songs, there are still a ton more listeners out there who don't–meaning these kids who do these things had problems before they started listening to the music. There have been several psychological studies that prove this. It is very sad and horrible that this girl felt that there was no other way out, and I feel so bad for her and her family, but no matter how much you want to place blame, you can't outright blame music. Even though I think MCR (particularly Gerard) is hypocritical, I admire these kids for going out and sticking up for their favorite band.
It had nothing to do with MCR. It was all organized by the fans. So if you think it's stupid…yell at the fans organizing it. Not the band.

I've spent the last four years at gigs listening to kids - which is one thing parents need to do more of. They aren't all depressed, poetry writing self harmers. Most of them are your typical teenagers; worried about exams, spots, boyfriends/girlfriends; p**sed off at parents, best friends and school; excited about their friends, their music, their lives.
I dress in black, does that make me emo? I listen to MCR, does that make me emo? I read poetry -hell, I've even written some in the past, does that make me emo? No, it makes me me.

The Daily Mail is the worst offender when it comes to blaming rock bands for these apparent "emo" related suicides as reported recently. Gerard way is sick of it and I remember him clearly having a go at the Daily Mail about what they wrote about his band depicting suicide and depression in their song lyrics in an article that was published in 2006. He also had a rant about it onstage at the 2006 Reading Festival in England. I was there and he wasn't at all pleased about the article. My Chemical Romance are an awesome band and if this it true that they are doing a march in London on May 31st - I AM IN!

The parents are just looking for someone else to blame. The girl showed her father that she was cutting and he still didn't get her help. You can't blame a band for something like this, especially when the band has always told their fans to seek help if they are suicidal or know someone who is.

How is it that I own Venom & the Damned LPs, a Mercyful Fate cassette, Marilyn Manson CDs and just saw MCR in concert, yet am often complimented on a happy disposition? Holy cognitive dissonance, Batman! Is it possible that people might have brains that function independently of the entertainment they select?
It's terrible that someone felt sad enough to end it all. However, it's hard to imagine that this amount of sadness was produced by a band whose fans routinely post that they SAVED their lives. Could it be that this person was listening for solace?
If you see me in a bad mood, it's very likely because some horse-faced warbler has come on the radio singing a desperate song of "lurrrrve." It's certainly not because Gerard Way has thrown his heart and soul into a passionate and imaginative performance.
Nobody blames the Phantom of the Opera or the Barber of Seville for anything ghastly, because we all know it's theater. Why isn't the same respect and credibility given to fans of rock music?

My Chemical Romance SAVED my life and continues to on a daily basis. They are a group of talented individuals who offer an inspiring message, as several of the band members have struggled with depression and addiction in the past. The band is not even classified as "emo". Their lyrics are meaningful and heartfelt and their melodies are the product of highly talented musicians. Maybe this young girl's parents and friends should have been more aware of her problem. According to the article, her parents KNEW that she was self-harming. Any parent who stands by and lets their child harm herself is a disgrace. Stop using music as an excuse for careless parenting. And if someone you know is suffering from depression (even slightly) reach out and help them.

Why has this turned into a mcr is amazing vs. mcr suck debate? The march has nothing to do with the band! This is a debate about the media and their continuing bashing of "alternative" music genres, when 14 year old Jodie Jones was murdered in Scotland her boyfriend was charged with it. He owned one Marilyn Manson CD and all of a sudden he was "obsessed" with Manson, driven to murder due to his music. Whether mcr are good or not in your opinion has nothing to do with this, people need to dig deeper and stop trying to put the blame on things that they can so easily pin it to.

To be fair, the kids have a point. The Daily Mail is a total joke with a habit of scaremongering and sensationalism, it's embarrassing that it has such a large readership.
