We're gonna have to plan a trip to Portland real soon!
Hottie commissioner Sam Adams was elected mayor of Portland on Tuesday, in an easy victory over businessman Sho Dozono.
Adams' win makes him the first openly gay mayor of a major U.S. city.
"I'm running not to be a gay mayor, but a great mayor," he said after delivering his victory speech. "But I'm very cognizant, very aware that I'm the first openly gay mayor of a major American city. That's a real honor."
Now, hopefully we can overturn Oregon's IDIOTIC ban on gay marriage, and Sam can lead the fight for equality!
Congrats.

I Voted for him!
Perez, please come to Portland!! It would be soo cool to have you! When I saw this last night, I was hoping you would post it!
Perez come on up we would love to have you..
Actually the mayor of Providence is openly gay as well. And we've visited there, it's a great little city!
Re: SG – To be precise 34, Harvey Milk was "City Supervisor" under Mayor George Moscone, in San Francisco. (Both were Murdered by former City Supervisor Dan White in 1978.)
Milk was nicknamed "Mayor of Castro Street", the thoroughfare through the gay district. Like Cedar Springs Road in Dallas, Texas,…and Montrose Boulevard in Houston, Texas.
being gay isn't going to make him a good mayor. Look at the facts. I voted for Sho Dozono yesterday. Adams only cares about bettering the west, rich, side of the city and plans to ignore the east side where minorities, the young and the poor live.
come to portland perez! come visit us!!
That's pretty cool to hear, actually!
Yeah Perez, come visit the great NW!
visit portland! let's hang out!
Harvey Milk was never Mayor of San Francisco. So while he was a great man, that sort of null and voids that. HOWEVER, being a resident of beautiful Providence and having frequently waited on the Mayor and his dates (he
FYI - I am from Providence RI where our openly gay mayor was elected back in January 2003. That makes us the first.
OMFG, don't go to portland. I lived there for a short, miserable while…the people are so passive-aggressive, redneck-stupid, humorless, slow, ignorant..and yet deluded to think their city can compete with places like NY, San Francisco or London. everyone drives slow, lacks passion, over-does that phony hipster-nerd look (so fucking OVER!) and they are just bland yuppies in thrift store clothes. even the GAY GUYS ARE BORING! seriously, i think they sew everyone's ass cheeks shut-as an acceptance ritual, for those who love portland. barf, barf, barf…do not go to this city…the people are like officious, thelm's from scooby do…so not sexy! they give liberal, artists a bad name…thought i would love it…would rather do a life sentence with martha stewart than live out my years with corny-ass portland-OREGONIAN-motherfuckers.
He said of a MAJOR city. No cares about your little podunk 500-person towns.

I imagine with your love of music that eventually you'd make a trek up here. PS. I happily voted for Sam Adams for his excellent policies regardless of his sexuality. There was never a gay agenda, and the citizens of portland have long adored Sam for what he has done to the city.
Come to the rose city Perez! but leave the rest of LA at home
I live in oregon about 1 or 2 hours from portland and i can't believe Oregon cares if people are gay or not. It still amazes me that anyone gives a shit who marries who. You know if it was you not allowed to participate in something you would not think it was right. I am not all about marriage and i am straight but people don't seem to deny me and my "spouse" anything just cause we are not married after 8 years. Well except my car ins rates could go down - punks!
Sam Adams rocks…as a former Portland resident, he really is amazing and is a GREAT choice for mayor.
Congrats to Mayor Adams. Perez, thanks for putting this up on your site!!! I live in Portland and this is an exiting day for us!!
Um… Mayor Cicilline of Providence is actually the first openly gay mayor of a major city.
Re: shannon – It is my belief that it is mentioned so very often because, although people who support the gay lifestyle will disagree, there really is a "gay agenda". If people don't want it to matter then stop mentioning it all the time. Keep your sexual preference to yourself and we'd all be better off. That's how I see it. You can't push something into every one's face all of the time and expect them not to have an opinion and not to voice it. Why wouldn't someone want to maintain their privacy?
I live in PDX..and how freakin fantastic is this? Obama won Oregon and now Adams…it's time for change and Oregon is more than ready!!
just because you think this guy is hot - not that you stand an ice cube's chance in hell with him, but anyway - doesn't mean you can ignore the fact this guy is NOT the first openly gay mayor of a major city

seriously. you should get your head checked, first for your obvious delusional fantasies, next for your hideous homophobia.
He is named after my boyfriend's favorite beer… Man, he is good looking, kind of like a well-aged Matthew Perry
*YAY* for Sam Adams- he's hot. Another big *YAY* for Providence's own Mayor David Cicilline for being a Gay too… Providence IS a Major US City, since it is the state capital in the smallest effin state in the union. You GO Gay Mayors- whoo hoo!

you dumb fuck from the 'couve.
OOPS- Perez, you didn't say that he was the first openly gay Mayor- SAM ADAMS himself said it… So, it's all good. Homeboy needs to check his facts…
seriously. we were a group of transplants from all over the country and lived at the hostel and then tried to move to PDX. we could not take it. it was such culture shock. when ever you ask an oregonian a question, it takes several repeats for them to understand…and yet they are so exacting, while they lack problem-solving skills. like little, out-dated, broken computers. you could leave your purple keys at a store and call to see if they had them, and they will say no–even as they are leaning on them. 2 days later you may return and see your keys on the counter and ask the small town, arrogant reed student, who is 35 and still working at powell's why he did not tell you the keys were there and he may say, "oh, those keys are 'magenta'" shit like that occurs all the time. no one helps any one. everyone thinks he or she is better than everyone else. they never focus on cooperating–they always feel taxed and rushed (because they are slow and stupid). it is like they are in their own fucking world. (to be continued…)
(continued…) i was so seduced by the pretty gardens, the beautiful houses, the initial friendliness, the cute mom-pop stores, the emo hot boys (who are really bland once you talk to them), the liberal values, the emphasis on organic farming…that i picked up and moved all my shit across the country to be there. BIG FUCKING MISTAKE. all these people do are hang in bars and coffee shops, talk about 420 or how morally superior they are to everyone outside of portland–all talk, no fucking action. i am moving back to nyc–shit, even a small town like ithaca, ny is more happening than portland-where every thing closes at 5pm. i wasted a lot of money, wanted to kill a lot of people and felt thoroughly lonely and cheated, except for my other transplant friends (about 10 of us who all left, after a year). i cannot even say the word, "portland"–without becoming furious. the people are pathologically passive-aggressive and egotistical, and their "friendliness" is bullshit. Think:children of the corn, when you think "portland."
Uh….Providence, Rhode Island has had a gay mayor for quite a few years now baby. David Cicilline, gay, Italian and Jewish!
What a hottie!
Re: Cara –
you clearly don't know a thing about sam adams or his campaign. he didn't run on 'those' issues - but he didn't hide the fact that he is a gay man, which he shouldn't have to. plenty of politicians parade their wives and children around during a campaign and is that 'disgusting'? you sound like a homophobic, ignorant jerk.
CHECK YOUR FACTS: Same-sex domestic partnerships/marriages are legal now in Oregon….
not true! the mayor of providence RI is openly gay!
Actaully Chris Calbadon of West Sacramento is also an openly Gay Mayor, and has been for years.
Re: GeorgiaMan –
There you go again. Are you a freaking retard?
Perez! Come to Portland!!!! I'll take you out for sushi!
Re: GeorgiaMan – There you go again. Are you freaking retarded?
if you do come, you can stay with me perezyyyyyyy
Thanks for posting this Perez! I'm a Portland resident and am thrilled Sam is our mayor. If you do plan that trip - let me know - I'll give you a tour! (I used to work in tourism for the city). Hope to see you soon!!
Don't forget about Mark Mallory in Cincinnati, Ohio..Oh, I forgot, he is not out!
I am not sure was constitutes a MAJOR AMERICAN CITY, but i know for a fact that both ATTLEBORO , MA and Providence, RI both have openly GAY MAYORS. Just a fact.
Perez, I invite you to Portland!!! It is one of the best cities ever. You can come stay with me, although I am a pretty boring lady who works at Trader Joe's and has a husband and son. But you would have a free bed! Sam Adams is a good guy! And I think he is single, so there ya go.
Hey I live in Providence RI. I'm also GAY and sorrrrrrrrrrry Perez but we had the first openly gay mayor " get Your Shit Right" before putting it in print.
Come to Portland! You will love it. Great Micro Breweries, and now, a mayor with a name that even reminds you of beer!
YUP Mayor David Cicilline of Providence was the first openly gay mayor of a capitol city …stick to being a nastylicious queen Perez!
HARVEY MILK was a city commissioner in San Francisco. He was never mayor. He was dubbed "The Mayor of Castro Street" because Castro Street was main thoroughfare in a predominantly gay area of the city. Harvey Milk gave a voice to people who had no voice, and was murdered in cold-blood by Dan White. If you ever hear the term "Twinkie Defense" (meaning a preposterous defense in a legal case), it is because Dan White's lawyers claimed he murdered Harvey Milk in a sugar induced rage. Long live Harvey Milk. He is a hero of mine.
or else, like the last 3 "positive" PDX posts that invite Perez to Portland–without acknowledging how others hate Portland…
OREGONIANS=STEPFORD (WIVES) PEOPLE
(totally creepy.)
Lived in PDX, too. THAT PLACE IS SO VANILLA…REPRESSED…FLAT…and MANIPULATIVE.
Congrats to the new mayor! But Cambridge, MA has had multiple openly gay mayors including Ken Reeves and the current (first gay, black, female mayor), E. Denise Simmons.
Sam will be a great mayor to our great city. And Oregon usually follows suit to what California does, so I am guessing the gay marriage ban will be overturned in the near future.
not true, david cicilline of providence
gay marrage SHOULD be banned.
What about Mayor Cicilline of Providence?!
I'm from portland perez.. lemme know if you come!
He is the second openly gay mayor of a major US city - Mayor David Cicilline is a wonderful - and openly gay mayor of Providence, RI!
But Congrats anyways!
I gotta second all the people who mentioned David Cicilline… he's our awesome gay mayor in Providence
Fucking gays….act like that is something to really be proud of!!!
Well, will his administration be a hard one, or will he go limp? Will he back into things or will he blow it?

What is the big fuggin deal if he is a homo or not? Why can't homos realize that it is not about being queer and dicklickers or muffmunchers, but rather can the person do the job or not. As a taxpayer, I would be more concerned with a politician and whether he can fix the streets, get the garbage cleaned up, keep the water running and the burglars out of my house and business as opposed to whether he takes it in the ass or not.

That is why you queer Ram-blows just don't get it. Ellen should not be a spokesperson for queers. Nor should this jag-off. Their actions should be what talks the talk, as opposed to wiggles the walk.
he's cute, but sam adams beer SUCKS
portland represent
That is soooo awesome! I live in OR and that is great news. I hope we can get that stupid ban on gay marriage removed too. Perez needs to come to Oregon!!!!!!!!!
Sam Adams is the first openly-gay mayor elected to a top 40 city. This is a significant milestone.
Moreso: Sam Adams is a bad ass. I live in Portland, and really, he had no competition. Sho Dozono would have turned Portland into another Walmart infested hell-hole like Cleveland. Sam Adams has helped make Portland the bicycle friendly, progressive, open-minded oasis it is. I voted for him. Go Sam!
Does anyone know if the mayor of Providence is gay?
Don't you people have jobs?
Re: STAYING ON THE WASHINGTON SIDE –
Really? You take time to post a comment declaring that you will not go to Portland because a city elected a mayor based on issues and NOT what he does in his personal time? You took time to make sure everyone knows that you are ignorant and full of hate?
There is no hope for this world with myopic, uneducated people like this. And there are millions of these geniuses out there.
Don't cross the bridge. In fact, jump off an even higher one.
Staying on the Washington side: I'm so, so, so glad that you are. I've been tired of seeing you people in your gas-guzzling SUVs pouring into my city just so you can take advantage of our lack of sales tax. Please stay on your side of the river and shop in your big box stores and plan your next Klan rally. Please feel free to take advantage of Oregon's right to die legislation tho. It was created for people just like you.
well this is a greeeeat step for oregon. it's an amazing state perez, pleeeease come i will shat my pants if you do!!
Portland is the greatest city in the US!!!
My two cents:
1. As someone pointed out earlier, Harvey Milk was known as the "Mayor of Castro Street" when he was elected to San Francisco city council in the late 70s. Although his election was a major landmark for glbt rights, he was elected as the city councillor for the gay village in SF, i.e. The Castro.
2. I'm with the people who say Providence, R.I. should win the prize for first major U.S. city to elect a gay mayor. I have no idea if and when places like Provincetown, Mass, or West Hollywood, CA elected their first gay mayor but they are little gay enclaves. The point of this honour, as I see it, is to show the city as a whole, including the vast majority of its straight citizens, is progressive. Providence is a major city. They win.
3. Portland's mayor is hot.
4. FYI, the first major city in the world to elect a gay mayor is Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where I live. Glen Murray was elected in 1998 to the first of two terms.
COME TO PORTLAND! YOU'D LOVE IT HERE!
Re: STAYING ON THE WASHINGTON SIDE –
GOOD SO THAT MEANS YOU WON'T BE COMING OVER AND PURCHASING EVERYTHING SALES TAX FREE ANYMORE!!!! YIPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SCHISTERS!!!!
Re: Really? – i love gay people…i just would not go to portland because the people in that city are sanctimonious pricks. oregonians are corny and always obsessing about bike riding (as if they are personally solving the energy crisis with indirect behavior, smugness and superficial solutions.) or else they are fixated on recycling, or water conservation (in a town where it rains 10 months out of the year), or they are figuring out some other obscure topic on which to admonish the "less enlightened" masses. Also, the quality of artwork and musicianship, in portland, is at the 3rd grade level. the only people in-love with portland are the obnoxious people who settle there. gay people rock…in any other city–but portland. in pdx, gay people act like haughty, "straight-acting" yuppies–with poles, instead of hot, dicks up their asses. lol
Re: Really? – stay away from portland, everyone. unless you want to listen to continual "high-horse" speeches by slow, "earnest," overly-proud individuals…portland is like a cult, full of fake new-age assholes and plain-jane, boring people in second-hand clothes. They are not activists. They are not cutting-edge artists. They are not rock-stars (stop relying on the lame-ass dandy w's). They are just bragging, twats–using a superiority complex to quell an inferiority complex. Since the ones who live there rarely travel, they have no idea how less sophisticated their city (town) is, compared to others. plus, for all the preachy fairness they espouse–pdx is severely segregated. but they will never address that–only smile and say something more that ignores direct confrontation. lol
Our mayor here in Providence, RI is openly gay too…
Quit wanking it to the Jonas Brothers long enough to get a fact checker. I love how political this blog has gotten, endorsing a presidential candidate who can barely say the words gay or lesbian, and refuses to mention gay rights during her big public appearances, may turn off the "hard-working white Americans."
Re: justmyopinion – Mayor MENINO is not gay. He can't stop eating long enough to get any kind of genitalia into his mouth much less the male kind.
You're all idiots. Harvey Milk was not the Mayor of San Fransisco. He was the city supervisor. Although we was know as "The Mayor of Castro Street" we was never the mayor and never will be, because we all know how that turned out.
David Cicilline from Providence, RI…………………
COME TO PORTLAND, COME TO PORTLAND!! IT'S BEAUTIFUL HERE AND WE WOULD ALL LOVE TO MEET YOU!!!!!!
Perez get your shit right, it IS legal for gays to have a union in the state of Oregon and its fabulous!
Check out basicrights.org
The Oregon Family Fairness Act, Oregon’s domestic partnership law, was passed in 2007 by the Oregon Legislature to provide the legal protections necessary for families to care for their loved ones. This legal recognition keeps children safe in the event of crisis, brings financial and emotional security, and strengthens our community as a whole.
Kisses and congrats to Sam Adams, he is going to kick ass!
Neil Giuliani, now with GLAAD, was Mayor of Tempe, Arizona for many years. He's about as openly gay as they come, plus he was an amazing mayor! However, Congratulations to Mayor Adams!!
Re: Caitlin – CAITLIN IS A CUNT. Hahahahaha…it's so fun to abuse portland people who cannot deal with conflict, directly! Hahahahaha…
First openly gay mayor of a MAJOR US city… Mayor Mike Rotkin, Santa Cruz, CA, openly gay mayor of a - well, a small burg, but still - 25 years ago!
Re: Cara –
Congrats on your Ignorant douchebag award, Cara. Do you live here? Cause unless you voted in the portland mayoral contest you really have no clue what his platform is, do you?
Re: Cara – He didn't run on that. Re: Cara – He didn't run on that at all.
Everyone here knew he was going to win! He was a great commissioner and he'll be a great mayor as well! Come to Portland, Perez… you'll love the city and I know a bunch of people that will appreciate the visit!
Uhh… what about David Cicilline in Providence? I know we're tiny, but come on. We still count.
Ed Oakley lost his runoff for Dallas, TX mayor, so was not elected.
Gavin Newsom is engaged to a woman in San Francisco, though he's supportive of gay marriage.
Providence, Cambridge, and Tempe are not top-30 U.S. cities.
Go Sam!
PEREZ!!! what are you talking about?!?! The mayor of Cambridge, Mass is a FEMALE, BLACK, LESBIAN woman!!! I find that more impressive and newsworthy. However, awesome job people of Portland!
Umm-Providence?
Actually, the mayor of Providence, RI, David Cicilline is openly gay. But great to hear it's happening in other places
Re: Cara – Cara, grow up honey… If you read the story, you'd see his sexuality was NOT a campaign issue… Its just that ignorant folks (such as yourself?) try to depict gays as being incapable of deserving equality, respect or other "special rights" such as the right to insurance. Open your mind… wake up and smell the 21st century… P.S. You can always volunteer for the Bush campaign… I hear that the ignorant 28% of Americans think he's doing a swell of job!
Actually, although it's not a MAJOR city, up here in NORTHERN New York, we had Mayor Dan Stewart of Plattsburgh, and he was openly gay.
For clarification:
Perez said he was the "first openly gay mayor of a major U.S. city." While Providence RI is a capital city, it is not considered a "major U.S. city" (neither is Tempe, AZ or Cambridge, MA, which both have had gay mayors.) "Openly gay" also means that Roxanne Qualls does not qualify, as she was never "out" while running for office.
ALSO, Harvey Milk was never the mayor of San Francisco. The San Francisco mayor, George Moscone, was assasinated by the same person.
The mayor of Dallas is Tom Leppert, his openly gay opponent Ed Oakley did not win
Mayor Menino of Boston is not gay. Neither is Gavin Newsom. Neither is the Governor of Florida, Charlie Crist.
BUT REALLY… why do you homophobes even come to this site? Seriously, if you hate "the gay stuff" so much, get your gossip somewhere else (but TRY to find a site that isn't run by a gay dude… seriously.)
Re: STAYING ON THE WASHINGTON SIDE –
We don't want your Vancouver funk over here anyway. You SW Washingtonians are so narrow minded. I am a straight male and I voted for Sam. I think he has been great for Portland as a Council Member and other positions he has held. He knows Portland. Good for him.
While I know it is not a MAJOR city…my hometown, Redondo Beach, CA, also has a gay mayor.
wrong first gay mayor is in ferndale michigan, just north of detroit.
Re: HatesBigots – Come on you carpet muncher get a new line that one is kind of like Afghanastan, bombed out depleted. Kinda like your asshole once your lover (oh i forgot you all like "Partner" now) reams you with a double headed dildo. Gotta go and put some water in your mama's dish it is hot down here. What is the weather like in Florida?
Re: Cara –
It wasn't part of his campaign at all, dumbass. People just know he is gay and he doesn't hide it, but his sexuality doesn't come into play on the job anymore than a heterosexual person's. STFU when you have no idea what you are talking about.
Re: I AGREE. FUCK PORTLAND! – I certainly wasn't even reading these comments til now, so my love for Portland wasn't on the defensive. I just love my city. I'm sorry you don't… anyway, Perez… you really need to come up here!! Oh, how I would love to meet you! xo
Portland is a major American city? That's a stretch.
