Yet ANOTHER sign that our economy is in the crapper!
American Airlines announced on Wednesday that they'll start charging $15 for the first checked bag, cut domestic flights and lay off workers as it grapples with record-high fuel prices.
SUCKS that more people are going to lose work!
And, it SUCKS that we have to pay to check baggage in. Just gives us that much more incentive to only take carry-on, but now everyone's gonna start doing that too!
The passenger cabin will be even more sucky on American than it already is.
EVERYONE will probably max out the 2 carry-on policy. Oh, and bet u can't wait to deal with overworked, under-resourced airline staff.

I have been an American Airlines employee for over 23 years. I have seen the industry go through its ups and downs but I must say, the high fuel prices are killing us as an industry. Not only is it disappointing for us as a company that we have to charge for baggage, its even harder that we as employees have to hear the endless complaining from our customers when the company has made a corporate decision such as this. We don't like having to charge for things, and we certainly don't like how our passengers have become so aggressive and if they don't like something they will get right up in your face…its scary. So just to make myself clear, I personally as an employee of AA hate that we have gotten to this point because of the astronomical fuel charges, but it is what it is.

It's a fact. Not an opinion. The economy doen't change from 1 decision overnight. It's along progression over time -years. A lot of what we are experiencing now are the effects of the decisions made by Clinton and his administration. Whether or not you are a Dem or Rep it is a fact that this is how the economy works.
Maybe if the American consumer was willing to pay higher ticket prices to accomodate the oil prices the airline industry wouldn't be in such distress right now. All the airlines are still competing with Southwest's prices because they have a cap on gas prices. That ends soon, so get used to airline tickets being incredibly expensive. We are in an economic slump right now, so you can't have it all your way. Oh, and argh - you can bring toothpaste and shampoo on a plane, just not in big containers. And if you're not willing to pay the price to check your bags maybe you could buy some at your destination?
Oil just crossed $132 per barrel and is projected to hit $200 within 2 years. At that price, only the super wealthy will be flying - private jets. Most airlines will be bankrupt. And very few will be driving unless you can afford a hybrid or a Fiat tin can like they have in Europe. This is payback from the Arabs for the infidel ( Americans ) occupying their land and seizing the largest oil reserves in the world. And yes #19, this is primarily George Bush's fault.
This is only the beginning. Gasoline in Europe is $10 -$12 per gallon and rising. Try and drive your SUV around at those prices! We are talking $400 per tank!
Move close to public transportation while you still can. Move even closer to your job, if you can.

People don't realize why oil&gas is so high right now. My husband and father both own oil and gas companies. I have grown up in it my entire life. I lived through the boom in the seventies and the bust in the eighties. This is about power in the world, not power in the white house. If the power of our number 2 natural resource gets into the wrong hands (meaning countries who are at risk of being controlled by a more dominant religious country that hates and wants to kill anybody who doesn't believe what they believe), we could be blown to bits or even worse, suffer a slow death by a religious powerhouse country who can cut off our entire #2 natural resource at WHIM! This is not something that is going to go away. The war that is going on is not a war that we can just walk away from. It was not a war that is optional. We had to get involved. Oil & gas will get higher and higher. BESIDES, gasoline for our cars is only 2 PERCENT of OIL and GAS. Think about all the plastics we use, rubber we use, oil in fabrics, lipsticks, a lot of it is petroleum. ALOT!!! Without that 130 dollar oil, our nation and our safety would crumble quickly. This is a lot bigger than most of us realize.

The oil prices are high because we've refused to use our own resources. I'd bet if you figured out all of the oil used by the Holllywood "green set" for their private jets to and from Cannes, weddings and NY as well as their many homes and private gyms, it would behoove them to fly domestic and save the fuel for the rest of the country.

High gas prices = Natural Distaster!
A little over one year ago:
1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3) The unemployment rate was 4.5%.
Since voting in a Democratic Congress in 2006 we have seen:
1) Consumer confidence plummet;
2) The cost of regular gasoline soar to over $3.50 a gallon;
3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);

When you have the Democrats and their environmentalists lords taking away our rights to drill for oil offshore, Alaska, taking away our rights to build refineries to put more of the product in the pipeline, please explain how Bush is responsible.
EVERYONE: Basic economics 101. Supply meet Demand. When supply does not meet demand, price goes up. When you have America's left turning off our ability to drill and explore, we are left to the demands of OPEC. Remember, we get the majority of oil from Canada and Mexico. Their market demands are also dictated by OPEC and lets not forget Oil Speculators in the free markets. PRESIDENTS DO NOT CONTROL THE PRICE OF OIL. MARKETS DO!
