Coming from a high school that had Gay/Straight Alliance, it helps with equality and openess to others. This man is a "fucking idiot" for not thinking about how this would benefit the students. At our school, we had more straights than gays in our alliance. This man shouldn't be principal anyway with such judgment he has towards others. Shame on him
Speaking as a parent, who has a student in that school, I say good for him. He really is a great principle. He has done a lot for the students. What does this club have anything to do with school learning? What is next? When is it going to end? How about having a "gang" club, or learn how to be a stripper club. Seriously, I am all for freedom of speech, etc, but when is it going to be enough? There are plenty of clubs to join outside of the school. And that goes for the Gay Alliance Club. Most people have no problem with it, but it has nothing to do with school learning.
I've actually had the chance to meet and interact with Eddie Walker. While I don't necessarily agree with his stance here (though frankly, a high school sexuality club of any stripe strikes me as inappropriate), I must assure you all that he is a thoughtful guy and a fine educator. A guy you'd be proud to know, actually - even those of you throwing stones. Sad to see his name here in such a negative light.
One more thing….it's not a GAY club, as the reporters are trying to spin it. It is a GAY/STRAIGHT alliance. Eddie Walker doesn't want it because it promotes sexuality and the policy of the school's sex education is to promote abstinance. GAY AND STRAIGHT…he is NOT a bigot.
Re: Jack – Jack ~ Nor was I considered a full citizen until I actually married the man who fathered my child. It's not just you. I know you think it is, and I know you've been taught to believe that the world is against you for being gay. But EVERYONE has these same problems no matter their sexual preference. It's not just you. You will find these exact same problems whether you are single, divorced, gay, white, black, mexican, indian, asian, the list goes on and on and on. People are simply people, nothing more and nothing less. They are allowed to practice their faith, and preach it too, for as long as people listen (and even not). Judgement is at every corner you turn for every single human being out there, and the laws applied to us as well (or lack thereof). Again, it is not all just about you, or about being gay. I would bet my last dollar that if the world became a totally acceptable place no matter your sexual preference, we would STILL find something to piss and moan about. It's in our nature, some more than others apparently.
Hey! I actually GRADUATED FROM IRMO HIGH SCHOOLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!
Years and years and years ago, of course. Leeza Gibbons, too!
I applaud Mr. Walker! He is standing up for what he believes in, which last I checked, is our RIGHT as an American citizen. He resigned with dignity and respect, by not bashing anyone. He makes some very valid points as to why he feels as he does. Clubs about sexual preferences have NO PLACE in our public school system. NONE. This has less to do with gay vs straight and more to do with the sexualization our kids throats at younger and younger ages. Quite frankly, I'm sick of it.
Perez, you have been getting way too political lately. You seem to be intolerant and uninformed. Stick to what you do best, making fun of celebs.
So what?? This guy is staying true to what he believes. He's NOT an idiot!
True to that! he is an idiot! It's a gay-straight alliance club, it spells it out. Its a club of acceptance. a public acknowledgement that the two groups are not divided and that being associate with one does not make you the other. it serves to unite the groups and provide a discourse. He should step down, no one with that mentality should be in a role of leadership.
It saddens me to think in society today we still have such biggotous, hateful behavior displayed by those in power. I grew up in rural N.C. an openly gay teenager. It was no easy row to hoe, but I felt welcomed and accepted by my classmate, despite not having a Gay-Straight alliance. I think this principal needs to attend a few meetings and learn the word "tolerence". And as for his supposed religious views, what religion doesn't teach love and acceptance?!
Re: HUGOTTI – Are you crazy?
What does he think the Gay and Straight Alliance is. A club where boys and boys and girls and girls can come together and fuck each other. Give me a *(#&%*(& break. What a dumbfuck…..
PEOPLE - you are not reading, maybe you went to too many CLUBS.
There are NO clubs at this school. None.
Dear Perez,
Eddie Walker, aka FI, did NOT resign b/c of the formation of a gay club!!! He is extremely religious and pro abstinance, not anti-gay anything. He even mentioned this in an open letter which The State newspaper failed to see. He said that he would have done the same thing if a group of sexually active heterosexuals had gotten together to form a club too. And not that I am an advocate of ONLY teaching abstinence and not including birth control, but you need to get your fucking facts straight before you make a post. His resignation has nothing to do with what is being reported, as per usual, from an unreliable media source, which you know all about! You should stick to Britney and Paris b/c that is why people come to this site in the first place.
Re: Way To Go Eddie Walker –
Well said and sorry to hear your sis is a prego. Life will be so much harder for her now especially if you guys arent' wealth. Having Kids is for people with money. No one stops to think how expensive it is to have and raise a child in America. College tuition nowadays is running past six figures however, I wish you both the best.
So it's OK to curse at a man standing up for his principles, like them or not. And it's OK to call someones baby ugly and fat. Have I got that right Perez?
I think you have no morals and no values. Soon others will be writing about your addictions and rehab trips.
Grow up, Perez. There is more to this life than getting your rocks off.
what a fucking bastard
to all you homophobic people:
get a life, love is love and gay people deserve to be treated the same as opposite sex couples. thank you perez for putting that up. the world needs to change now.
Re: FRS – hahahah I totally agree with you.
Clubs based on religion, sexual orientation, or race have no place in public schools. They are discriminatory by their very nature.
Perez and fellow perezhilton.com readers,
I find that living in South Carolina can be very challenging for the GLBTQ community. We've come a long way from where we were and we have some amazing support systems for our community. I find it sad and repulsive that someone would try to use there "professional beliefs" as grounds to promote prejudice and intolerance, but I would also like to add that with you shedding light on stories like these, you help to promote not gay rights, but equal rights for everyone, and for that I am truly grateful! You're amazing Perez!
-Joe
Its so funny a few people here are actually saying good for him. Hmm I'm from NC and I know that both north and south carolina have very high teen pregnancy rates. I also know that it is viewed in those community that things like AIDS and other serious STD's are for those people. It doesn't happen in Christian communities. So before you pat him on the back it sounds like they need to realize that teaching abstience is simply staying blind to the problem, and a gay straight alliance is a way for kids who Identify to feel as if they are not alone. Keeps things like schools getting shot up because of closemindness from happening to those who go through high school hell.
While us LGBT Californian's are still celebrating about finally getting our full human rights to marry, this is just a reminder that we have more work to do. Its a shame that people who hold what we would think is a respectable educational position, not only have these believes, but act on them in such a manner.
the gay-straight alliance club has nothing to do with engaging in sexual activity, homo or hetero. also, it's not a "gay" club as proven by its name. it's a club for anyone who wants to be involved in an accepting environment. man, people are dumb.
Well, TK, I find it interesting that people are on here blasting him for something he didn't say. I guess the average American is just plain dumb-ass who can't think for himself/herself, because if you believe this story as you are commenting on it, it shows you didn't bother to educate yourself on the issue before ranting about it. So people, go ahead and let the media spoon feed you. I guess they had you pegged all along.
Re: Nola Mom – Very good point. Glad to hear your side.
the school teaches abstinence-based sex education.
"I feel the formation of a Gay-Straight Alliance Club at Irmo High school implies that students joining the club will have chosen to or will choose to engage in sexual activity with members of the same sex, opposite sex, or members of both sexes,"
why encourage young puppy love children to engage in sex before the age of 18 in the state of California???
Everyone from my high school knows that club is a dating service… if he's attempting to instill some abstinence education in his students - then right on. His letter states his intentions, so as a gay man I completely understand. Think about the sluttiest gay kid you know, the one who meets up with people through Myspace, and then add in a kid who's just coming out… what do you get? STD's and unnecessary distractions in the classroom. These clubs NEVER work out the way they're supposed to. I agree with many when I say that it is admirable that he stood up for something he believed in-and he did it with some dignity-not hate.
everyone should thank god that asswipe is leaving. What an ignorant biagoted principal! Someone like that should not be working with children to begin with, its actually kinda scary that someone who hates these kids so much was their principal! Only in the south do losers like that get to be in schools. Up north itts so hard just to become a teacher, let alone a principal that shit like that doesnt happen much. The south needs to follow our northern neighbors and get some better qualified people in the schools!
look i am all for gay rights and marriage and all that stuff but what he did wasn't that bad. not everyone is going to think the same way as you so i think what he did was right because he didn't do anything to harm anybody, all he did was stand up for what he believed in. give it a rest.
EWalker@lex5.k12.sc.us
email the asshole
YOu know what? People who are liberal are so quick to jump on anyone with a different opinion than them! This man has stood by what he believes and has taken action. Isn't that what he is allowed to do in our country? I applaud him! I would think that the liberals would accept what anyone believes, being free speech and all. You are a bunch of hypocrites. Homosexuality is wrong. It doesn't mean that I don't love someone that is gay, I just think that it is wrong. Just like I love people that lie. I don't like the action, but I love the person. So good for you Mr Walker. Way to stand up for what you believe.
I live in SC and it seems like every week SC is somehow in the news, which always shows it in a negative light and has a right to. SC is a state with a bunch of fucktards.
BETTER YET
HIGHSCHOOL'S JUST NEED A GENERAL "DIVERSITY CLUB"
If the whole point of this club is to educate on GLBT equality in South Carolina, then why not invite black students (Who no doubt have experienced racism in the south), Latino students (who no doubt have experienced racism in the south), disabled students (who no doubt have experienced bigotry), Caucasian students, heterosexual students, etc. to answer one another's questions and speak out.
It's the easy way around it, and everyone is happy! Eddie Walker wouldn't be able to say no! It would no longer become a club about sexual preference (I understand that heterosexuals are invited, but it is a club for homosexual equality… you can't deny that).
sorry perez….you're the idiot. all he was saying was that he didnt want to endorse sexual activity. the end.
its important to stand with what you say you believe in. which is what he was doing.
Well said PP, a fucking idiot is very fitting.
Let's dissect this…you're judging him for having convictions and standing by his own moral beliefs? Isn't that what gays are always pouting about wanting also? Riiight….. Get over it, he didn't beat up some gays in a back alley, he respectfully resigned from his job. You are the idiot. Equality is not just for gays.
WAY TO GO EDDIE WALKER!! Now only if ALL of our school system's stand up to these idiots liberals!!
You see thats what is wrong with our country, but bitch is out of a job now. Dumb fuck!
Hooray for sticking to his beliefs. So often gays want the whole world to accept them. I respect you but i dont agree with the lifestyle! I'll never agree with the lifestyle leave it at that! I have every right to feel that way. But you make it seem like were soooo misguided when we have strong belifs or that people who have some type of moral code or are semi-religios are idiots because we dont accept your lifestyle. The fact of the matter is that no one wants to find out that what they are doing is wrong . So they reason to themselves " Well what im doing cant be wrong so it must be the bible thats wrong" give me a break as i said i respect Gay men and women as people but i cant support or accept that lifestyle leave it at that and let people have their own beliefs and opinions….goodness
He says that a club like this encourages sex, and hes full of it. First of all, teenagers will always have sex. Hopefully safe sex, but yes, it will happen. Maybe two boys or girls will meet in this club and get together, but thats not why its there, for sex, its there for support because of people like this guy.
I think we should all be glaad (pun intended) that hes gone, did we really want him to stick around anyway, hed only be a negative influence?
People with STRONG religious beliefs that are about intolerance have an AFFLICTION …. so therefore, we can take the HIGH ROAD and be compassionate towards them too … as if they were retarded or something … like, "poor, mind-controlled, brainwashed, bible-thumping fundamentalists …. we know you THINK you are doing the right thing, but one day (in your next lifetime) you will wake up and see the light … you will be BORN GAY to see what intolerance feels like!"
The most disgusting thing to me in this, is the attempt to conform everyone to the same thoughtline. EVeryone is entitled to their own opinions. I don't give a damn if he's a principal, this means nothing on wether he would make the appropriate choice should a REAL issue be brought to him. But no, you expect he should live up to a certain brain washed standard that says if it has the word "GAY" involved with it, just let it pass through without question or you're nothing but a biggot and an idiot.
Making it so people have to constantly watch their words as if the Thought Police will be coming down on their every little comment, is nothing but conditioning us to accept the day when they completely remove our right to Free Speech. Speak up if you have a problem with it, and then get this, shut up long enough to let the other side speak too. The man had a right to his opinion, which for what I read, reflected nothing of homophobia, only a problem with contradicting the abstinence group he did support at the school.
If the kids need a group like this, and you claim there's more straight kids than gay kids taking part in these groups, then it should be just as successful run outside of the school as it would be with the school.
This man is not a "fucking idiot", everyone who chooses to call him this for no reason more than they themselves couln't read beyond the word "Gay" are the ones proving to be fucking idiots.
Why can some people stand up for what they believe in and be commended and applauded and some people who stand up for their beliefs be condemned? It doesn't make sense. He didn't fight the club, he just resigned because the club didn't coincide with his religious beliefs. Good for him!!!!
good!!! i say be gay on ur own time, not at school
were you one of his students?
do you even know where irmo, south carolina is?
can you even find south carolina on a map?
he is entitled to follow his religous beliefs just like everybody else and it is apart of his religion that says homosexuality is wrong. so he steps down.
he was accepting of all of his students and we had no gay bashing or anything. we just acted like they were not there just like they treated us. they would cross the lines when the giant bull dykes would go into the boy's bathrooms. i am proud to say eddie walker was my prinicpal and role model and if there were more eddie walkers in this world our country wouldnt be in the shitty state that it is.
ahhhhh, my best friends boyfriend totally started the club!
im so proud of him!
just to let everyone know, this is what irmo people are like.
come to lexington
PART ONE: Eddie Walker is a great principal and man in general. If you would actually post the link to the ACTUAL LETTER that he sent out to his school you would see that the whole fuss is that the school teaches abstinence so he was against having this club because of the sexuality of it all. It is for STRAIGHt and GAY people. HE was not solely quitting because there was a gay club. HE never tried to fight the club being formed he simply stepped down because it was against his beliefs. If you actually did some research before you report on stuff you would all see that he is NOT bashing any gays and not ignorant. He said that he hopes that everyone in the club will be treated with the golden rule and respected.
PART TWO:
I believe this club will single out more gays in the first place and HS is not a place where you want to be singled out anymore because people are cruel and will talk abotu others. He was thinking of the students with this one. BUt none of you personally know him and none of you have read up on this topic anymore than the slanted media link Perez posted. You should try actually looking up his actualy letter and reading it and then I think you might have a different view. Sure he still may have a different belief than you but you would see that he handled the situation in a respectful manner and chose to resign rather than preach his opinion and try to keep the club from forming. IT will be in effect next year. It is sad that people condemn someone for standing up for their beliefs, especially when he did it in a respecful manner and chose to step down rather than trying to cause a scene. And let it be known that he never went to the media he simply sent out a letter to students and faculty and that is how it leaked out he is not out giving interviews or publicizing his views.
Why does fat Perez care? This only affects homos and Perez isn't gay at all. He lies for his stupid website.
There are gay people that are abstinent, just like there are straight people who are.
THIS IS MY RIVAL SCHOOL'S PRINCIPAL
what a fucking jerk and my gay best friend goes to that school too…
As a graduate of Irmo High School I am appalled by this story. I hated and I mean HATED my time at Irmo. I once had a teacher reprimand a very openly Christian student by calling him a Jew. As a Jew, I went straight to the administration who basically told me there was nothing they could do. Irmo use to have fabulous teachers, most of them have left in recent years because of the schools rapid decline. I hope Mr. Walker never steps foot in a public institution again. What a message to send SC students, instead of preaching tolerance for all people the principal is promoting hate! South Carolina is still an extremely narrow minded, Bible Belt preaching society, but please know that not everyone living in South Carolina has the same archaic views at this sorry excuse for a educator!
Ashleigh, I don't think Eddie Walker was principal when your scenario occurred…just like the media, you are attempting to mislead. Mr. Walker does not promote hate. Try reading the full story so when you speak you can sound half way intelligent.
WELL….HERE WE GO AGAIN MARIO. YOU CLAIM TO BE PRO FREE SPEECH AND FREE EXPRESSION AND ALL, BUT WHEN AN OPPOSING VIEWPOINT IS EXPRESSED THE PERSON DOING SO IS A "FUCKING IDIOT". YOU ARE A FUCKING IDIOT MARIO…IF THIS WAS A CHRISTIAN YOUTH GROUP THAT WAS BEING PASSED IN A SCHOOL DISTRICT YOU'D BITCH ABOUT SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. I LOVE HEARING YOU ATTEMPT TO INJECT POLITICAL WISDOM ON US ALL. YOU HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE BASE ON THE SUBJECT.
Good riddance! Out with the old, in with the new!
this is one gay hatin' state…not just gays either…white hate african americans, african americans hate whites; god FORBID you are latino then you are "less" than scum. the old south is alive and well here in hypocrite central. funny thing is; this principal is probably gay too; just lies like hell about it…but it goes against his "morals" and religous beliefs…that's how it works around here.
DEAR PEREZPIG, YOU are worse. Good Riddance petunia.
So when people have beliefs and convictions that do not agree with yours they are fucking assholes? I have to say that your a hypocrtical fucking asshole then!
I love how many comments to this article are about a "bigot" who preaches hate and violence. Eddie Walker did nothing nor condoned anything violent, he reasonably decided to step down after a whole year to make the transition easier for the district. He didn't say anything hateful or discriminatory towards homosexuals, he just said that a club supporting sexuality didn't align with his personal morals or the school's abstinence policy.
Why do we have to attack this man for peacefully practicing what he feels is right? He didn't even want to make a comment to the media, to try to mitigate any harm to the school. Plus, the issue at hand wasn't even LGBT at all, he was just supporting his belief that sexuality of any kind shouldn't be encouraged at the high school level.
Sheesh. Imagine Perez, if a competitor's blog made this big of a fuss everytime time YOU called someone a "fucking idiot," which actually IS hate speech!
hey, at least the fucker is gone. i'm glad i'm not from south carolina, even though i live in this inbred state full of damn idiots.
So I graduated from Irmo's rival highschool
and although i see the point, that there shouldn't be ANY sexual orientation clubs in school, straight or otherwise
….the dude IS probably a racist, prejudice biggot.
just like the rest of the people in this state.
fuck that loser.. the school will be better off without him. Bigots like that don't need to be working for a school
Anyone who is calling Eddie Walker a "bigot" is IGNORANT and never even read his letter to the school or you would be educated enough to not use that term to describe someone who peacefully stepped down from the position, allowed the club to be formed, said he wished the golden rule be applied to all that join the club and did not even do it because of a gay issue. It is a public school that preaches abstinence and so there should be no clubs that promote sexuality.. gay or not.
GET YOU FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU TALK SHIT ABOUT PEOPLE!!!
What happened to standing up for what you believe? Oh, wait, it is only when it is convenient…I am so sick of conservatism being viewed as a evil thing. It is just a difference of opinion…aren't we supposed to be understanding and open minded? Oh wait, only when it agrees with YOUR SIDE. As long as he is not hurting anyone, who cares?
I support gay rights and I don't just say the words, I live the support. But, I don't believe that school groups should be based on sexual activities. School groups should be based on educational interests, not sexual interests.
Did you even BOTHER to read the quote from the letter??? It says NOTHING about him being against gays–it says he is against kids having SEX in general!!
You're such a bigot, Perez. You read into anything you want to and then present it as fact. The school teaches ABSTINENCE…so he doesn't want to promote kids having sex with ANYONE, regardless of sexual orientation.
Why don't you just call your site 'Gay Central–we don't accept anyone or any view that isn't gay'??? Because that's all your site is.
You are the most prejudiced person around. You slam anyone who isn't gay. It's fucking ridiculous. You are the absolute worst ambassador–you pretend to preach openness, when in reality you are anything but.
There is nothing in that article shown or any evidence that this principal is resigning because he hates gay people. Lets all take a good look at the article again, read it and think about it a little bit. He believes and teaches ABSTINENCE. That means no sex gay, straight, or bi-sexual until the partners are married. It doesnt prove that he hates gay people so he is not a jerk. Instead, we should be applauding him for setting an example for all people of all sexual affiliations- to look past sexual orientation and to learn to appreciate what love and marriage is supposed to be about. Educating teens on abstinence and birth control is so important no matter what anyway.
What is with calling people breeders? Just because most straight people can have children? Last time I looked, it was a wonderful thing for two people who love each other to have a child together! I know lots of gay people who really want children.I'm sure if gay people could procreate they would! Having children has nothing to do with being a bad person. Get a clue assholes!
Everybody is entitled to their opinions, including him. While I don't agree with his feelings, nor am I here to judge. I appreciate his action of resigning rather than causing an uprise and/or possible violence by protest at the school.
So… I've already commented on this post before, but I really feel the need to clear up some things because it is QUITE obvious that 96.39821% of you have no clue what you are talking about. As a member of the executive board of the Gay Straight Alliance at my University in Florence, SC I have to say that I am truly awed by the sheer display of idiocracy in these comments. For starters, Gay/Straight Alliances DO NOT promote sexual activity maybe if all of you commenting would do YOUR OWN research, then you'd realize that GSAs are about helping advance the rights and presence of the GLBTQ community. The fact that he uses the school's abstinence policy to back up his prejudice is pathetic. Many of you think that a Gay/Straight Alliance is a club that meets weekly for wild orgies and roofie cocktails, and frankly, that's bullshit. We work our asses off to promote DIVERSITY AND EQUALITY for NOT ONLY the GLBT community, but for EVERYONE! We work tirelessly not to persue gay rights, but EQUAL RIGHTS! I find it so sad that so many do not understand what GSAs are about, and I personally have felt the stigma of this from working with the community. So many of you are telling Perez to get his facts straight befoe he posts things, but like others of you are saying, there are TWO sides to every story, and from someone who HAS done their research on this story. i think YOU GUYS are the ones that need to do a bit more research.
Re: hmmm –
hate speech

speech that attacks a person or group on the basis of race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation.
DO some research before you blindly post things. "fucking idiot" is NOT hate speech

More than a fucking idiot. How can anyone behave like this in 2008. How can someone get to the rank in the education system and be so biggoted. I count on the schools to open the minds of my kids. To teach them acceptance -of who they are and and tolerance of others. its hard enough growing up….I hope he lives in rejected isolation so that he may not have access to the kids of the future. They deserve better guidance.
I am a 1991 graduate of Irmo High School and my son attends an elementary school in the same district. I support Mr. Walker and do not believe that this club has any place in a school. Children are at school to learn and receive and education. If the students wish to start a club, then it should be done off campus. By the way, I support gay rights and there were many homosexual students at Irmo High School when I was a student there. We were all one student body and no one saw a need to divide and disrupt. My best friend at Irmo was gay and when I told him what was going on, he agreed with me-he said that Irmo was never a place where he felt rejected and he said that he would not have wanted to join any such group. Go figure! A school where gays and straights got along and there was no need for a special club, my how times have changed!
No Perez, you are the idiot. Did you even READ his letter, or just the headline. While I don't agree with his opinion, it is his opiniuon and he's entitled to it. Gay goes against his religion, while your opiniopn may differ(ain't America great?) there's no just cause to dismiss his and assume yours is the right one. Just when you started to earn some respect, you open your pie hole.
Amen, Perez… I live no more than half a mile from where this school is. What a joke, but seriously, who wants such an intolerant principal at their high school anyway. I love how he says it's because he thinks it promotes sex. Right! He's just an evangelical idiot.
I personally know Eddie and he is not a idiot and his is right for standing up for his rights & beliefs. All I have to say is the former school his was principal at….WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THEM BACK !!!!!
Read Eddie Walker's letter. Get to know Eddie Walker. Only then you can make an informed, intelligent decision. He has the right to stand up for his Christian values. He truly cares about his students and teachers. He is a principal with principles (and common sense!)
After reading all of these comments, i feel that everything i was going to say has already been calmy and thoughtfully stated. So i suppose that all i have left to say is…
Perez you are a fucking idiot.
I AGREE THAT MENTALLY-DERANGED SEXUAL DEVIANTS SHOULD NOT BE EDUCATED IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM.
:)-
Those with deep-seated homosexual tendencies are usually unwilling to examine the emotional conflicts that "caused" this tendency. Most of these men had painful adolescent experiences of significant loneliness and sadness, felt insecure in their masculinity, and had a poor body image. There is a much higher prevalence of psychiatric illness in those who identify themselves as homosexuals. Unfortunately, their denial, defensiveness, envy and anger block their openness to seek help with their emotional and behavioral weaknesses. Male effeminacy is a clear sign of serious affective immaturity, usually where they failed in their childhood to identify sufficiently with their fathers and other male peers.
YA - SPEND SOME OF THAT MONEY ON A PSYCHIATRIST - YOU NUT CASE - BEFORE YOUR 15 MINUTES OF SHAME ARE UP AND YOU ARE BACK ON WELFARE.
It's going to be impossible to cover all the bases in a short response on a web site, but I'll give it a shot. To anyone who, like this sorry excuse for a celebrity reporter, didn't actually delve into the facts of this story before posting, you are the idiots. Eddie Walker is one of the finest men I've ever had the priveledge to know. In his 30 years as an educator and administrator, he has done more for children and teenagers from every walk of life - gay, straight, black, white, rich, poor, male, female, you get the picture - than most people will ever do in their lives. Anyone who has ever spent ten minutes talking to him will tell you there is not a prejudiced bone in his body. He is a caring, thoughtful, intelligent, educated person with a deep commitment to his students, wherever he is working. At the elementary school where he was principal, he knew all of the students by name, and spoke to them every time he saw them. I would bet that even at a school as large as Irmo, he did his best to do the same. His decision to resign rather than give his implicit approval to GSA, while it may be unpopular, was nothing more than him trying to resolve a conflict between his principles and his job. Despite the fact that everyone is rushing to chalk his decision up to bigotry or homophobia, his real reasons (and no, you cannot discount them out of hand, no matter how much you want to) for opposing the club are outlined in his letter. (continued)
To those of you that think he's an idiot for opposing the club in the first place, you are entitled to disagree with him, but not to slander him and call him names. As many others have pointed out, a support group for gay and lesbian teens might be a good idea, but it also has its potential problems. A club based on sexual preference (or preference in life partners, if you prefer) doesn't really fit in a high school that is trying to focus on education and teaches abstinence first sexual education (again, the effectiveness of abstinence-based sex ed is off topice - it's district policy, it is what it is, and it's not his choice). He is not dense enough to believe high school students don't have sex - believe me, he understands the minds of high schoolers better than most high schoolers. (continued)
For those of you who are part of a GSA at the college level, I think that's absolutely fantastic, and that most colleges would benefit greatly from a GSA. However, the difference between a college atmosphere and a high school is enormous. In case you have forgotten, the percentage of mean, spiteful, and petty people is much higher in high schools. wheter it be because of age or because of the additional filters between attending high school and attending college. Joining a club like this, especially in an area where a number of the students ARE still raised as ignorant, bigoted, or just plain hateful, is like painting a target on your back for those people who will look for any reason to harass you. I have read, seen, heard, etc. the statistics and reasons that advocate a GSA, and you may be correct in thinking that it would be more beneficial than harmful.(continued)
. In closing, I would like to simply say that blindly following and believing this scumbag celebrity leech's take on the situation is the biggest mistake that any of you could have made, and allowing your own prejudices to influence you to prejudge this situation is the second. Dragging a great man's name through the mud is never permissible, no matter how much you disagree with his actions. What he chose to do harmed no one, except possibly himself, and is no one's business outside of the small community of people it affects. Perez, fucking up the lives of celebrities is bad enough - fucking with the life of a relatively unknown man who has done nothing but good for hundreds or thousands of people is inexcusable.
(This should have been between my third and fourth post) Mr. Walker happens to disagree with that, but rather than try to force his point (by getting the parents up in arms, launching a public protest) he chose to resign, allowing the club its place at Irmo without putting himself in a position that he found unacceptable. His resignation was supposed to be quiet and dignified, and the reasons known only to his colleagues who he felt like deserved an explanation - before some idiot decided to leak it to the press and make a national issue of it
NO, HE IS NOT
If you read his reasoning, it makes logical sense. He doesn't want a club promoting sexuality in the school, whether it's sex between hetero- or homosexual students, bi, or any other orientation. Most of you need to get a fucking clue. Do you want your children, I said CHILDREN, having sex? Adults, after learning from your own experiences, do you think it's a good idea for children to be immersed in sex? NO. I would be very upset if my children's school started a club that's main focus was sexual in nature. The school in question had a abstinence based philosophy, so it would only make sense that the principal would oppose the club. It makes NO SENSE to call this man a bigot. Unless you want to say he's bigotted against teen sex. He'd probably agree with that. READ
In a copy of the letter obtained by WIS-TV in Columbia, Walker said allowing the Gay-Straight Alliance club on campus would conflict with his professional beliefs and religious convictions because there are no other clubs on campus based on sexual preference or activity and the school teaches abstinence-based sex education.
"I feel the formation of a Gay-Straight Alliance Club at Irmo High school implies that students joining the club will have chosen to or will choose to engage in sexual activity with members of the same sex, opposite sex, or members of both sexes," wrote Walker, who said he prayed about the issue before deciding to step down.
Re: Joe – Though everything you stated makes perfect sense, (well-written, intelligent; THANK YOU) I dont believe that High School is the place for a club like this. The students are too immature to handle it appropriately. Honestly, speaking as a former teen-mother, the emphasis on sex in high school needs to be squelched!! Teens are sexaholics! It only takes a whiff of sexuality to start a full-on sex-o-rama going on in high school. Anyone over age 27 (or so) knows it's true! College is the place for clubs of such a nature. Perhaps colleges should open their clubs (like the Gay-Straight Alliance) to high school students, who could maybe learn something from the more mature members. (And by "learn" I mean learn RESPONSIBILITY)
Re: William – William, well-said. Standing ovation to you!!!
Re: Thank you for your logic –
EXACTLY!!! The theory of GSA's are amazing… until teenage hormones are added in! The clubs are always conducted professionally and serve a point, but that point (educating, promoting equality) is easily lost amongst teenage hormones.
JOE — I HAVEN'T JUST DONE MY RESEARCH… I'VE LIVED THAT RESEARCH.
These clubs don't mean to offer themselves as a dating or sexual outlet (because they aren't), but they do… that can't be avoided and that is why Eddie walked. I KNOW these aren't sex clubs! Duuuhhh! They are a place to promote equality- Duuuuh! Unfortunately immature high school students don't understand their emotions, and will soon be found fighting their hormones with other students going through the same thing. GSA's aren't meant for MINORS, they are meant for responsible ADULTS who understand their freedoms and the messages they need to convey.
So from PERSONAL experience, these clubs offer high school teenagers, minors, CHILDREN a way to meet people and begin a limited dating pool. Soooooo- why have a dating pool? Exactly Eddie's point. I understand where he's coming from… he isn't anti-gay, he's smart… A.K.A. pro-abstinence in a time where teenagers get HPV shots as a precautionary measure their freshman year. This issue isn't a question of sexual equality, it's an issue of abstinence and good sexual health. GO EDDIE!
You're such a hypocrite, Perez. This man's personal statement is not nearly as offensive as half the things you say about people on a daily basis. You won't be happy until we stop reproducing.
dick
Eddie Walker is actually one the few educators left who truly cares about each and everyone of his students. He has dedicated his life to enriching the lives of the children he has taught….which includes running an "Alternative" school that reached out to kids that everyone else in society had given up on! Perez, for someone as open minded as you claim to be….you know nowhere near enough about this man to make such blanket statements. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, right? That includes Eddie Walker.
