Dealer Offers Free Gun With Car Purchase
BUTLER, Mo. — A local car dealer is holding a controversial promotion involving guns.
Max Motors in Butler is offering anyone who buys a car the choice of $250 in gas or a free semi-automatic handgun.
"Like I say, it's a choice — protection or gas," said Walter Moore with Max Motors.
Moore said he came up with the gas or guns promotion.
"We got high gas prices, theft, carjackings, innocent people getting hurt," Moore told KMBC's Chris Nagus.
So far, the handgun is a more popular choice.
"Right now were running 80 percent toward the gun," Moore said.
"Love guns, we all need to have guns," said Jerry Hertzog, who was buying a new truck. "Guns or gas or fuel, I'll take the gun anytime."
But the idea isn't popular with everyone. One viewer told KMBC that he believes the promotion is dangerous.
"I don't understand what's the bad idea. Telling people they have a right to protect themselves," Moore said.
Moore said most of his customers already own weapons.
"I get in a vehicle to bid a trade, there are guns in the seats, guns in the back windows. Everybody has a gun — there's no backlash," Moore said.
Moore said the dealership will hand the customer a certificate to get the gun, but you must pass a background check.
The local police chief said he is OK with the promotion as long as the weapons aren't handed out at the dealership.
Heres a basic rule of the universe. The people with the guns are in charge.

It is a statistical fact, legal gun owners are the safest gun owners in the country. Concealed carry permit holders are responsible for de-escalating over 2 million crimes a year. No country in history with armed citizens has ever been victim to a hostile takeover. Removing the citizens right to bear arms will not take weapons out of the hands of the people who obtain them illegally. Instead, the criminals who obtain them illegally will not have any concern about who in any given group might be armed. But hey, all you anti second amendment people, rock on.

Hi…I LIVE in an upper middle class suburb about 20 minutes from St. Louis County. I am not a redneck and I'm not a criminal, but this is what I know…if you LIVED in Missouri and have seen the SHIT BUMS that lurk around Missouri, you would want to own a gun as well! I once lived in a gorgeous older town in St. Louis County and it has been run to shit with uneducated fools that have no respect for themselves or the properties they reside on and resort to crime for a source of income. You think they have a few guns laying around? I think so. There is a gun in my home. And I feel comfortable with that thought. I am a liberal democrat…but that has nothing to do with it. It's not surprising that gun crimes have decreased. However, you have to look at ALL violent crimes to come up with any meaningful data. Perhaps all the crimes that were previously committed with guns are now committed with knives or something. Not saying that's the case, but just saying "gun crimes decreased" really doesn't tell us anything meaningful.
And anyone who thinks an unarmed citizenry–no matter how numerous–can effectively rise up against an armed government is pretty stupid. Really, with all the advanced weaponry militaries work with now, it would be pretty much impossible to rise up even *with* guns.

Though I am not proud to say that I currently live in this town called Butler, MO, I have to say it could be worse. At least Max Motors is not handing out the guns to people. Every person still has to go through a background check before they are able to turn in their certificate for the free gun. As much as it embarrasses me to live in this same town, at least he kept the promotion legal!
