Have we finally grown tired of Oprah Winfrey????
The answer (sadly) seems to be a resounding "Yes!"
The New York Times just wrote this article about the tarnishing of the O brand and they point out some startling facts.
- The average audience for The Oprah Winfrey Show has fallen nearly 7 percent this year, according to Nielsen Media Research — its third straight year of decline.
- The circulation of O, The Oprah Magazine, has fallen by more than 10 percent in the last three years, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, and the magazine is now seeking a new editor in chief after the announced retirement of its longtime steward, Amy Gross.
- Oprah’s Big Give, an ABC philanthropic reality show, beat every program on television except American Idol in its premiere week this winter, but steadily lost nearly one-third of its audience during the rest of its eight-week run, according to Nielsen.
- Her endorsement of the presidential bid of Senator Barack Obama appears to have alienated some of the middle-aged white women who make up the bulk of her television audience, many of whom support Senator Hillary Clinton.
- Ms. Winfrey has lost viewers in some markets while The Ellen DeGeneres Show has gained.
- Ms. Winfrey is also continuing to develop new programs. A spinoff talk show featuring Dr. Mehmet Oz is planned for 2009, and earlier this year she signed a development deal for television projects featuring Kirstie Alley. A syndicated talk/cooking show featuring Rachael Ray has been less successful and has recently fallen out of Nielsen’s list of the top 25 syndicated programs.
- If Ms. Winfrey has cut back any part of her schedule, it has been in appearances in support of Mr. Obama. Following high-profile rallies just prior to the Iowa caucuses in December and leading up to Super Tuesday in February, Ms. Winfrey all but disappeared from the campaign trail, leading some pundits to wonder whether she had gauged a negative effect on her business.
- A Gallup poll conducted in October, shortly after Ms. Winfrey announced her support of Mr. Obama, found that her “favorable” rating fell by 8 percentage points, to 66 percent, from 74 percent in January 2007; her “unfavorable” mark jumped by more than half, to 26 percent from 17 percent.
Wow.

My feeling is that people felt like Oprah would have backed Hilary if Obama was not running and that her endorsement for Obama was all about skin color. So of course this is going to bother her core audience who believe that Oprah is supposed to be fair, and supposed to be informed. She already made the mistake of inviting an author of a phony autobiography on her show, and raving about it. Then she goes 10 thousand steps forward and endorses a candidate, expecting her audience to blindly vote for him based on his skin color, and her faith in his ability, but she never investigated what those supposed abilities were, so its another outburst from her that nobody appreciated.

I quit watching Oprah about 10 years ago. I don't need her preaching to me every day. I am grown and don't like people telling me what to think, what to eat, and what to believe. If she is so in tune with everything then why is she still not married? I know its because Dr. Phil still hasn't been able to help her with her personal life to make a commitment. Why is this a surprise? Oprah has steadily become less interesting and more self-serving over the last few years. And while I'm really glad she lost all that extra weight and feels healthy, the fact is she is just as obsessed with the weight/diet/appearance thing as any anorexic teenager. She hasn't been really serving the interests of her female audience for quite a while now. And, no, bribing her audiences with cars and stuff doesn't count. Boo to Oprah!

when oppie humiliated that writer james frey for embellishing in his memoir a little too much… i began my personal "over oprah" journey. she treated him like a criminal. meanwhile he was just an artist trying to get his book read. the book was amazing and could have continued to help many who needed to hear the message of the book. oprah sounded out of touch in her abuse of this man. She has done a lot of great things–just seems caught up in her own bubble.
Her heart is in the right place, but the Oprah show has become very boring. I don't want to read Eckhart Tolle. I didn't and won't vote for Barack Obama. I don't have the luxury of buying 100% organic food and a staff of thousands to help me live the life Oprah claims to lead. A few years ago, a co-worker was on her show as a subject matter expert, the kind who sits in the audience, not on stage. She was instructed by the producers to not contradict Oprah, no matter what she might say. After, I caught a snippet of her conversation with the cast of Crash. There was a subject matter expert in the audience, a professor with many years of expertise on the subject of race in America (he is black). He told Oprah she was a racist, just as we all are. If Oprah had laser beam eyes, she would have killed him, "What? I'm not racist," because Oprah is no longer just one of us. She is Oprah from on high, doling out her wisdom so we can share in her enlightenment.
Honestly, I checked out from Oprah during her Beloved phase. She was EVERYWHERE trying to hoc this movie. Then we had to listen to how devasted she was when it failed. I never saw it, but I heard it was pretty terrible, an obvious vanity project.
As for her connection to Obama being damaging, oh well. She probably has known Obama from years since he has been active in Illinois/Chicago politics for years and, uh, oh yeah, Oprah lives in Chicago. My support for Obama has nothing to do with Oprah. It has to do with the fact that Obama is the shinier candidate who makes people feel good about voting for him and that he is smart enough to choose the best and brightest to help him with his decisions.

Perez, I read the entire NYT article and as usual you (and your staff) omitted critical information. Read the following:

“It has been the No. 1 talk show for 471 consecutive weeks,” Mr. Madden said. “That’s a good barometer if her show is in trouble or not, and obviously if you’re No. 1, you’re not in trouble.”
I think Oprah has become bored with her own talk show. It seems to me that the content of her show has become much more corporate than it used to be. In the past Oprah had a lot of emotion, feeling and inspiration but now I find it is a series of thinly veiled promotions like having Barbara Walters come on to promote her book, Oprah's favorite things, SJP promoting her movie and her new clothing line, Maria Shriver promoting her own book etc etc etc.
That stuff is only so interesting and I think they've reached a tipping point in the saturation of such things.
I'm not sure if going back to her old tricks would help much either. I think Oprah had a really original thing in her talk show back at its height because she respectfully brought out a series of really deep issues that people weren't comfortable talking about - I believe those days are over. The talk show thing has been done.
Oprah is a self serving hypocritical meglomaniac. She is driven only by greed and a gigantic EGO. She is desperate to continue to declare herself as god. No she has not used the word out loud but she believes she is. Lots of sick psychos have many millions and billions…..Enron CEO's, Tom Cruise etc.. are just a few examples….people need to quit tuning in and let her go away. What keeps her on TV still is her own money that's why she is needing to buy her own network..she knows people are sick of her. so called charity contributions are GIANT tax right offs..she would never give something away without gaining more money. She's a fraud on every level.

Many people are canceling cable and satellite subscriptions…as well, they are not buying magazines. This is all due to high gas and oil prices which have led to high prices for food and other products, thanks to higher distribution costs which manufactures pass down to consumers through higher prices for products, forcing consumers to cut back on their budgets for everything (as disposible incomes are disappearing for most). Another factor in this is the real estate crash. Are you going to pay your morgage or cable bill so you can watch Oprah??? Most would rather pay their morgages!!! If you factor in the amount of people who are canceling cable and satellite service…you will most certainly arrive at that missing 7% of viewers…a theory backed-up by the fact that American Idol's ratings are also down this year…along with The Hills and several other high profile shows. The last time I checked…American Idol has not endorsed Obama for President!!!

2) Part of Oprahs whole thing is about Pushing women issues, Liberating Women rights, Power to the Wome. Women this Women that blah blah blah
3)the Election 2008, A women and black man running… She chooses to endorse a Man , after all she preeches about Women power
4) This bugged her core audience to the core(which is mainly White Older Women, whom identify more with and actually might like and support Hillary.)
So basically she preeches to the masses of women and then endorses a Man for president. Which is her Right to so, However women felt like shes being a Hypocryte because of it.
Instead she should not have chosen sides and just said She adores Obama and may the Best Person win. And maybe her core viewers wouldn't of minded so much. There are other reasons she has declined… mainly because its grown Boring and she kisses Celebreties ass. Everyone movie she promotes is Awsome and So Great… whatever , ive seen her Reviews on air and later watch the same movie and it Sucks Big Time, but she insist its so Great.
Thats why People have stopped watching because the show has become so mechanical and ass kissing to the stars to promote their work. To Commerical and its lost its essence of Strength and Realism
Most Americans no longer feel a connection to Oprah. She has such extreme money and power that it is hard to relate to her. She can't help this, but her stress level is so high that it comes across on TV. Ellen seems like such a happy person and makes us laugh. I admire Oprah for all the good she does; she just needs a fresh set of ideas. Watching her show for some reason is depressing to me.
