Tipping is not apart off your culture but a part of the way your system has been set up. tips are always added on to the bill and a tax when you get your bill and then you can add more of a tip if you please - is this correct or incorrect. We may be referred to as the Land Down Under but you and so many Americans (not all so dont get your knickers in a knot) are just backward ignorant morons.

The reason I commented is that everyone was jumping on that kid for bitching about Australians not tipping him at his job, and screaming AUSTRALIANS DON'T TIP at him. I'm assuming that he's American and this happened in the US. A lot of Aussies on here are acting like he's being unreasonable or stupid for expecting a tip from an Australian in the US. The American Office. The original Brit Office shits all over it- we got the original here because we all UNDERSTAND different cultures and could get the humour.) Seems like you guys are only obsessed with yourselves and reinventing the same tired, shitty old wheel - and yet you all keep buying it. How sad. In Australia we appreciate knowledge of all cultures (which is why our TV choices are so eclectic.) Not our fault America spends all their money and time making escapist fiction when they could be doing something about the world- thus leaving the market flooded and our main choices for television import being dominated by your produce. (though we have probably an equal amount of Brit shows on TV right now)

I'm from the UK, Manchester to be exact and with all due respect, Australia was one of the most dirty places I've ever been too. My husband and I were there 2 years ago for our 10th wedding anniversary and I'll never be back. The people were mixed, some friendly but many were not. (Just like on this board!) All the public toilets were filthy and the movie theaters were covered with trash and the seats drenched with…well I can only surmise. One of my husbands mates and his wife had the same experience 6 months ago. New Zealand on the other hand was very pleasant, I'd go back there anytime…."And don't even get me started on the flight over there!"

I have been to America a few times, my whole family is Australian and everywhere we went we tipped people because it was customary and the right thing to do. He should respect our customs too because for us tipping is a reward for good service no subsidary pay. We value high quality service.

In Australia, the minimum wage is much higher than in the US and tipping is not necessary as waiting staff working full-time hours can easily survive on their income without tips. We don't always remember that workers in other countries aren't as well off.
