Scarf Controversy

Filed under: Fashion Smashion > Rachael Ray

rachelraydunkin.jpg

What's in a scarf????

Well, Rachel Ray wore a scarf in a Dunkin' Donuts commercial that threw the conservatives into a tizzy, according to reports.

Ray wore a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men (see photo above).

Fox News talking head and columnist Michelle Malkin explained, "The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."

Dunkin' Donuts at first dismissed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh.

But, the right-wing firestorm continued on the internets and by yesterday, Dunkin' Donuts decided it was easier to yank the ad.

Dunkin' Donuts said in a statement, "In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial."

What do U think of the controversy?

RaRay's stylist is getting no bonus this Christmas!

I think the whole uproar about keffiyehs is really quite ridiculous- you can get these scarves from almost anywhere in the Middle East- not just Palestine or Iraq or other current controversial political climates. Once upon a time wearing a beret would have had military implications, but fashion is about incorporating social & political influences in to our everyday lives- fashion & society are ever evolving. People tend to focus too much on the controversies of fashion, but it only shows ignorance when it's completely unfounded.

I got my keffiyeh from Oman- the 25th most peaceful country according to 2008 GPI rankings. USA is ranked at 97; so how do you like them apples?

oh my fucking god! leave it up to bible-thumping, right wing americans to make a big enough controversy over a fucking scarf to have a whole ad pulled from TV….what a joke…if i were American, i'd be embarrassed…much like the whole thing over Janet Jackson's breast being shown on TV for a millisecond…are they serious that they don't have more important issues to focus on? i'm constantly amazed by how American democracy seems to be going backwards…so much for being the "land of the free"

Hey all, i am arab and this scraf has been very trendy not only in arab countries but all around the globe…. it is inspired by arabic heritage but it does not represent Jihad because they dont represent us… it happened they wear similar (not the same) scarf..but wearing it does not imply anything..we were raised to believe that americans respect all people irrespective of their backgrouds, but some parties are taking it to extremes in judging anything Arabic..

first of all, this quote is completely biast! are all muslims wearing this scart terrorist? Yaser Arafat was the head of the Palestinan goverment. Most Arabs in the Middle East wear that scart. ARE THEY all terrorists? Please be more open-minded as you are usually!!! tHIS IS SUCH A STEROTYPE. Please google the arab scarf and you will see that the majoritiy of the Arab population wears it from Bahrain, KSA, Kuwait, UAE, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, etc.

please think about people's feelings when you write such hateful comments

the hijab thingy is very popular in the middle east, and i believe has no relation or whatsoever with killing people or not.
It is a hot fashion item … and its even better if it has meaning…

I live in the middle east, and many men wear it here NOT to represent killings or jihad.

    its a garment.
    People wear it.
Just cause it was in videos where people were murdered does not mean that if you wear it you are a killer or terrorist.
or supporting anything of the sort.

  22. Your m says – reply to this

    922

just so u know the keffiyeh is not an islamic jihadist symbol its a traditional scarf that has been worn for many centuries by aab men. just because u see some videos of retards killing ppl wearing these scarfs does not mean they represent terrorism. It also doesnt mean palestinians are terrorists in any way.

It would really help if u enlightened urself on the subject before u comment.

  23. Mosee says – reply to this

    923

I was given a keffiyah 14yrs ago by a friend from Yemen. He never mentioned "how to or not to" wear it. I know it's not really a big deal that she's wearing it, however if we're going to cry out "fashion victim", she could have worn it properly and more stylish. Rachel should take fashion tips from Kanye West, he wore a keffiyah in his music video "Homecoming"…what about that? Get over it and Dunkin Donuts was trying to be diplomatic, I guess.

  24. s says – reply to this

    924

the kifeyah is popular everywhere..and so what if its linked with the arab world..f*ckin right wing a-holes think they can attack the middle east bombard it rape it of its oil and shit..and on top of that want nothing good to come out from it….

a keffiyah is not terrorist wardrobe BTW!…it's traditional palestinean and neighbouring countries' wardrobe..if those "conservatives" knew shit about the middle east they wouldn't yap about it…and yes everyone wears it..bcz BUMMER! it's actually nice…it's about time ppl start doing some research, arabs r not fucking terrorists…those "jihadis" r fuking insane and in no way represent wat islam is abt…every religion has its extremists.. just like the FLDS and puritans. i think i've said enough.

  28. chefla says – reply to this

    928

I love that you find a way to mix politics and celebrity news. Keep it up Perez. You're starting to become my hero. And about the scarf - unless she wrapped it around her head and wore it like the traditional keffyieh, I don't see the similarity. It's just a black & white scarf with a stringy fringed edge. It means nothing. If a Palestinian wears red, white & blue it doesn't mean he's pro-American, either.

  29. Swede says – reply to this

It's a damn shame that Dunkin Donuts is afraid of a right wing whack job like Michelle Malkin. She and her ilk are so prejudiced and racist they should all be locked up in Guantanamo for their hatred. It's a SCARF you idiots!!!!

  31. Sim says – reply to this

    931

People need to stop associating everything with terrorism. Keffiyehs have been worn since forever, since before Osama bin Laden appeared on the scene. Again, not all Muslims are terrorists, and not all of the people who wear keffiyehs will bomb themself. I say, all ads with glasses in them should be banned. Why? Because Carlos the Jackal wore glasses, and we all know how big of a terrorist Carlos was.

Michelle Malkin is a hypocrite. Found this on Wikipedia, check it out:

Malkin was born to immigrant parents who gave birth to her soon after arriving in the US. She opposes the granting of automatic U.S. citizenship to babies born to illegal aliens, tourists, and temporary workers. Malkin discussed her position on these so called "anchor babies" in a 2003 Jewish World Review column, which ended, "Citizenship is too precious to squander on accidental Americans in Name Only."[63]

i wear those scarfs all the time in england! everyone does! i'm sorry but by putting them on a pedastal and saying that only terrorists can wear them surely its encouraging them to become more unified!! i'm sorry but i thought america was supposed to be a mutli-cultural society and by having an advert taken off the tv because a scarf represents a different culture, surely that is racism?!

  50. IzzyFi says – reply to this

    950

Conservatives do what they always so, bitch about thing. Anyone suprised? I'm not. Its going to happen again and again and again, because instead of actually getting off their buts and doing something, they bitch around about something so trivial as a scarf with paisley pattern. someone needs a life, don't you think ;)

  51. Dana says – reply to this

wow!!now the scarf is now a terrorist! HAHAHAHA..no seriously I'm still laughing!

  52. Lexi says – reply to this

    952

dude I have that exact scarf! Aside from political drama, it's not a keffiyah. Its from urban outfitters and it comes in white or light pink. It has a paisley-flowery pattern. It's really cute you should check it out!

  53. 953

If a group of pedo gays want the right to hump little boys I wouldn't say "Homosexuals fight for right to sex minors"

I would say "Fringe extremist group" And these people HARDLY speak for conservatives. And shame on you Mario for projecting such hate. The same goes for those that rah rah'd with you hate pom poms.

Having said that, I could not care any less about a scarf. But that WAS a stupid idea, and it was just a "accident" because if you know how such things work, no product placement in ads are accidents. They ARE that anal retentive about it. So yeah, it was done on purpose.

But very few people really care. And Fox? They do what you do Mario. Make a big deal out of nothing.

You do it every day. Stop being a hip.

Re: IzzyFi ironical said Conservatives do what they always so, bitch about thing. Anyone suprised?

    958

just want to point out that this michelle something or other person is a compelete and total close-minded idiot, first of all the scarf which is also called a chmakh DEFINATELY DOES NOT SYMBOLIZE TERRORISM. It is a traditional head scarf worn by arab men for thousands of years and differs from each country places like kuwait and suadi wear the red/white one, places like jordan and palestine wear black/white one ( think scotish kilt) anyways, seeing my father, brother, cuz, neighbour wear it everyday i asure you they dont wear them with the thought of murdering, beheading or kidnapping anyone and so i just wish people (cow) like whats her name would at least try and get an education rather than call everyone else ignorant

The narrowmindedness and ignorance of some Americans is shocking.

    975

What the fuck people! I am glad that they pulled the ad!!!!!!!!!!!1

No, i';m not a conservative but an empathetic human being. If my family was killed or people i knew were affected by people who USE THE SCARF AS A SYMBOL OF TERRORIST ACTIVITIES i would definately not want to see it being worn in a t.v. commercial.

It's free endorsement for terror and desruction. That is what it has come to symbolize just like camolfloge reminds us of war and destruction.

I once had a friend who was an immigrant from a war torn country and a student wore camolfloge pants. The girl was so afraid that she went into shock and had to be put into counselling.

IT IS JUST IGNORANT TO IGNORE WHAT THESE THINGS MEAN. NOT EVERYTHING IS INNOCENT. I DONT CARE IF IT'S FASHIONABLE….

…SINCE WHEN IS THE SLAUGHTER OF INNOCENT PEOPLE FASHIONABLE….?!?!

    …dumb fucks!

  76. Godot says – reply to this

Dunkin Donuts response is as disgusting as people who defend slams against Barack Obama for "being a muslim" by saying that he isn't a muslim, as if we are talking about being a convicted murderer and not a member of a religion in a country where we are free to practice all religions.

Hating muslims in this country is no better than Germans hating Jews in the 1930s and 40s.

It is incredible how outwardly racist this country has always been. When historians look back on this country they will be amazed at how a culture of bigotry, racism, arrogance, ignorance and stubbornness were able to thrive and be called liberty and freedom.

Another example of how people blow things way out of proportion. Yes it would be offensive if Rachel Ray had been wearing it in the traditional keffiyah way, but afterall, it is just a piece of fabric. Everyone over here in France wears those scarves around their necks, they are one of THE fashion accessories.

i dont fucking understand why everytime it has something to do with muslims or arabs the whole of america makes a tragic big deal out of it. so fucking what? get over yourselves, is it like a crime to wear something that resembles to what arabs wear????? i bet u the americans would start like some sort world war 3 if anyone dared to insult the christians or the american nation as much as the arabs and muslims were treated for the past 100 fucking years! fucking descrimination and injustice!
