Scarf Controversy

Filed under: Fashion Smashion > Rachael Ray

rachelraydunkin.jpg

What's in a scarf????

Well, Rachel Ray wore a scarf in a Dunkin' Donuts commercial that threw the conservatives into a tizzy, according to reports.

Ray wore a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men (see photo above).

Fox News talking head and columnist Michelle Malkin explained, "The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."

Dunkin' Donuts at first dismissed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh.

But, the right-wing firestorm continued on the internets and by yesterday, Dunkin' Donuts decided it was easier to yank the ad.

Dunkin' Donuts said in a statement, "In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial."

What do U think of the controversy?

RaRay's stylist is getting no bonus this Christmas!

I think people are making a big stink over nothing. I remember wearing something similar back in the 80's, and it certainly wasn't in support of Palestinian jihad. If Rachel is guilty of anything, it's of wearing an ugly, distracting scarf.

Five seconds of research will tell you that these scarves do NOT resemble any form of terrorism, but have been worn for centuries by peaceful Arabic pastoral nomads living in the desert. It is ridiculous to contest that a piece of cotton symbolizes something as awful and as violent as terrorism.

  24. Mel says – reply to this

    WHO CAAAAAAAAAAAAREEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS?!?!?!?! Seriously???

The "scarf" should have been worn over her head….I hate that bitch!!

I think that is bullshit—conservitives still think everyone of eastern decent is a terrorist…conservitives are fucking ignorant!

  26. will says – reply to this

    126

I think it's a wonderful example of fear-mongering by the Right to convince people that all Arab are Muslim (which is false) and that all Muslims are terrorists (also false). Plus, I doubt that Arab and Middle Eastern men are picking up their scarves for $75 at French Connection.

  27. NUBIAN says – reply to this

  35. Jubba says – reply to this

    135

I think this is stupid. If the scarf was say, blue and black or any other colour combination, there probably wouldn't be this hubbub about a stupid scarf. Just shows how the reglious right controls America!! (Not like we didn't know that before…just look at the t.v. programming…violence and heads being blown off at 8pm-alright! A naked half ass cheek-Praise Jebus!! FCC gonna getcha!)

  36. babela says – reply to this

    136

unbelievable. so now it's un-american to wear a scarf? i'm amazed that muslim americans aren't already all in internment camps, like you guys did with japanese americans in ww2. (and us brits did with german brits at the same time). i hope there are still enough sensible, genuinely freedom loving american citizens left. i'm sure there must be.

  37. blah says – reply to this

    137

    what dumb idiots……………………………………..

  38. soldie says – reply to this

    138

that scarf does NOT symbolize hate and terror; it's common among middle eastern men as part of their culture!!!! it happens to also be worn by middle eastern men who terrorize and kill people - in part to conceal their identity!!!

i am a soldier who just got back from her second tour in iraq and i have a few of them that i brought back - they are beautiful and remind me of the WONDERFUL middle eastern men and women i had to privilege of meeting while there….

some people are so ignorant and just another example of Fox News being absoutely idiotic and obnoxious. sickening hate being spewed from that network. there is NOTHING wrong with her wearing that scarf - IF you have any bit of intelligence, you'll realize the difference.

  39. pk says – reply to this

    139

oh come on….back off…it's a scarf on RACHEL RAY.
Doesn't the world have bigger issues than borrowing worry from a Dunkin' Donuts commercial? How about the price of gas? The homeless? Children killing children? Tornado victims?
GROW UP and open your eyes.

  40. marc says – reply to this

    140

are you fucking kidding me? i'm sure that's what rachael ray has on her agenda…to piss everyone off by wearing a keffiyah. come on!

  41. kendra says – reply to this

    141

Yes, of course it looks like a Keffiyah, and these keffiyahs have been sold as "freedom" scarves by Urban Outfitters among other stores until a few months ago, when another "right-wing firestorm" erupted.

It definitely looks ugly either way, but I appreciate that Dunkin' Donuts canceled the ad. Additionally, I really am so sick of Rachael Ray and am surprised that anyone likes her at all anymore.

  42. shawee says – reply to this

    142

Oh lighten up people. If anything, they yanked the commercial because the scarf looked shiteous. I'm getting really tired of everyone's gentle feelings. It's just a dunkin' donuts commercial. Just like Pryor said "Drink a Coke and shut the f@ck up!"

  43. ben says – reply to this

    143

    this is very retarted

  44. me says – reply to this

    144

the ONLY reason it's a poor choice is that the keffiyeh is VERY misunderstood by right wing assholes. yes, it has been a popular symbol for the palestinian movement, but it's also a VERY common textile dating back to the middle ages.

obviously rachel ray doesn't fucking know what the hell a keffiyeh is..so it's harmless in that sense. funny enough they are really catching on. your casual urban outfitters buyer bought them up (before they were yanked) mindlessly. i feel sorry for jews who constantly feel threatened, and don't want to see a symbol like this catch on, but LAST TIME I CHECKED, A TEXTILE NEVER KILLED ANYONE! i proudly wear mine because i know what it truly symbolizes for me, and it's NOT hatred.

  45. La Lis says – reply to this

    148

are you kidding me? everyone has that scarf!! its so fashionable atm that you're in the minority if you dont have it! plus it comes in a range of different colours. check out the british tabloids… its part of the whole "scene kid" movement.

    152

This is absolutely stupid and a prime example of how Americans are shooting ourselves in our own foot by being so politically correct. Everyone needs to just chill and give it some thought. Do you really think that her stylist would know to do something like that?! The bottom line is that now days anything that anyone does can be found offensive.

  53. ash says – reply to this

    153

I say who cares! It's not like we are living in a muslim country. we have rights here and should be able to wear whatever we want.. even if its a scarf that looks like keffiyah.
If the muslims dont like it then they can watch their muslim TV through their satelites. F**K the immigrants!

  54. katie says – reply to this

    what a bunch of pussies.

  56. Starfi says – reply to this

    156

Seriously! That's ridiculous. I think that people are just looking for things to be upset about. It's just a scarf! I don't think that it has anything to do with being ignorant or not. I think the people who are ignorant are the ones making an issue out of it. Considering she's not Palestinian or a man, it think it's safe to say, it's just a cute scarf. She's a cooking/talkshow host that caters to soccer moms. It seems ludicris that it would even be an issue. Do people thinks she's promoting the Palestinian jihad? Get a life! It's just a fucking scarf!

    158

I remember buying these "religious scarves" 5-7 years ago when I was living in France for 1$! Now WTF has happened? Mainstream media has taken these scarves, thrown them on people like Lohan, Ritchie and Hilton… now its a fashion piece costing $50!! The Kaffiyeh has many meanings and I feel that the media (racist FOX Media) has no idea what the true meaning is behind it. They should have googled it, done some f*ing research before coming out with a quote saying the Kaffiyeh "is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad."

    I hate Fox news.

  60. 160

    162

Seriously, who cares. People have been wearing those as a fashion statement in the East Village and Williamsburg for years and most of those people probably don't even know (or care) how/why it was worn by the few evil people that also wore it. Get over it.

  63. First! says – reply to this

    163

Wow I don't think she what meant.. her stylist was the one who gave her that, but either way I wouldn't ware it is so ugly, I hope they give her another chance and she fires that stylist

  64. p33236 says – reply to this

    164

No wonder some people from other countries hate Americans. How is this in any way important to the powers that be over at Fox News? It's a commercial for donuts and coffee!!! Talk about xenophobia.

  65. SAGste says – reply to this

    165

Every time the commercial would have played…Ra-Ray would've received a SPIFF (bonus, payment, kah-CHING!). OK. She likely already got a HUGE FEE that's already deposited in her bank account. But..the stylist…director…art director…ad agency…prod-peeps…ultimately cost her easily high 6 figures, if not 7…in payments for future airplays. UNLESS, she had a "guarantee" specified in her contract. THEN she might still be gettin' some SPIFF, despite no airplay. I'm sure the DeeDonuts Gang did the math to figure out what was the least damaging of a financial hit to them all. SOMEBODY is gonna be deep-sixed on this, though. Do NOT think it's the stylist. I think it's an ART DIRECTOR at the AD AGENCY at fault. The stylist is a fall-gal or fall-guy.

  66. Klaus says – reply to this

    166

    Stylist is an idiot.
Producer and ad people are idiots for not noticing.
American conservatives are gigantic idiots for getting offended over this.c

  67. mali says – reply to this

    167

WTF? Yasa Arafat was not a terrorist. He was a freedom fighter looking to find a division between Israel and Palestine, nothing even to do with freaking America. And he made alot of progress and when he died it was all reversed and a lot of people are in terrible circumstances now because of it. Talk about ignorance, they talk about people being ignorant about the scarfs origins and then make a blanketed ignorant comment like that. And wtf anyway not all Arab's are terrorists and those scarfs actually look ok but they are kind of masculine for a chick anyway.

  68. Aysha says – reply to this

    168

THIS IS SO RASCIST!! The scarf does not represent palestinian jihad….I am Palestinian and it represents our struggles, 5 times more Palestinians have been killed than Israeli soldiers….PLUS this is becoming popular with the punk rock styles here… I have given my friends in the USA this scarf because they want to wear it to look cool….right wing conservatives are not anything but ignorant and rascist!

u may say it's just a scarf, but it is a scarf that I personally don't want to see on a commercial. being a former Marine and having had spent time in Iraq watching some of my fellow Marines being shot at by Mother F-ers wearing that shit. " i think it's disrespectful and it brings back bad memories”. so if you don't know the story behind it and can't say u have experienced the evil that comes along with it, than u need to back off.

It must be so wonderful to live in a free country like the USA. Remember how the right-wingers used to feel so sorry for the people of the Soviet Union ? That is how I feel about Americans now. Stop this nonsense please !

  89. Mcat says – reply to this

    189

That is ridiculous. Michelle Malkin needs to get a clue and stop being so ignorant. The "clueless" person here is the one that makes the ignorant assumption that anyone wearing a kiffiyeh (or a paisley black and white silk scarf - easily confused obviously) supports "murderous" peoples or "terrorists". Arab (Palestinian, Lebanese, etc.) men/women have traditionally worn these scarves - stop stupidly associating Arab tradition and culture with negative stereotypes. It just makes you clueless.
