Scarf Controversy

Filed under: Fashion Smashion > Rachael Ray

rachelraydunkin.jpg

What's in a scarf????

Well, Rachel Ray wore a scarf in a Dunkin' Donuts commercial that threw the conservatives into a tizzy, according to reports.

Ray wore a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men (see photo above).

Fox News talking head and columnist Michelle Malkin explained, "The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."

Dunkin' Donuts at first dismissed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh.

But, the right-wing firestorm continued on the internets and by yesterday, Dunkin' Donuts decided it was easier to yank the ad.

Dunkin' Donuts said in a statement, "In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial."

What do U think of the controversy?

RaRay's stylist is getting no bonus this Christmas!

it is definitely a paisley print … why do people react so badly to everything and kick up such a fuss over a scarf? Don't they have better things to do?

Right-wingers are such idiots and crybabies. Michelle Malkin and everyone else on FoxNews needs to focus on the real issues and not stupid things like this. Damn, Republicans are dumbasses!

    213

Doesn't it honor and prolong the life of the extremist group to isolate a symbol exclusively for their use. The only way to defeat a society, religion, cult, (i.e. jihadists, Scientologists, etc.) is to assimilate their culture and redefine their language and symbols. So, if everyone was wearing a t-shirt that said I am a Thetan and talked about themselves as Thetans, being a Thetan would not require its own religion. If everyone wore those scarves Rachel is accused of wearing, no one would notice them anymore and they would lose their meaning. So, if you don't believe in what a group is doing don't honor them by supporting the symbols.

    229

Obviously just another diversion tactic on Fox News's behalf to distract the American public from paying attention to more real and threatening issues involving terror: the role our government is/has/will be playing in Iraq, Bush's Patriot Act, our gov.'s negotiations with and aiding of the Israelis, etc.

Please stop watching TV and read independent news sites online. Within the next 5 years we could very realistically be living in a dictatorial militarized police state where all of our freedoms cease to exist–not that they haven't essentially already. Please, for the sake of the youth's nation, read, research, and question the policies being enacted by our president and Congress. If we don't, it's inevitable that this country will be almost unrecognizable in a decade or two.

  46. Bee says – reply to this

    246

Un-fucking-believable. Sometimes I think the USA is the scariest country in the world, I really do. I know that the majority of Americans (I hope) would surely disagree with Fox's completely ignorant narrow-minded comments, but seriously….
If scarves are a symbol of terrorism, then all French female teenagers are also terrorists, as scarves are a major fashion accessory there and other European countries. It has also become an item of fashion for young men in the UK following a recent spate of rock/indie bands who wear these scarves on stage etc. Are these all terrorists too??
I don't suppose the people who made those comments could even point to any part of Europe (or Iraq, or Pakistan, or anywhere else other than the USA)on a map, so who knows what they might argue back on that one…

  47. Sam says – reply to this

    247

"The murderous Palestinians" are dying of starvation in what amounts to prison camps because Israel has taken all their land. These people were farmers.

These statements reek of racism and hypocrisy.

a keffiyah does not look like that, it is black and white but looks totally different, scarves like what she is wearing are so in now in europe …

  53. Stepha says – reply to this

    253

Um, newsflash it IS just a scarf. Gosh, I hate having to live in a world where we have to research background information before we decide to put on something as simple as a sock because it might offend someone.

ARABS and their fucking scarves should all burn in HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  55. Mimi says – reply to this

    255

    OHHhh surrrreee……
all hell breaks loose because she is wearing a keffiyeh…
and what if she sympithazies with the Palestinian Jihad.
after all it symbolized is thr struggle of palestenian to get their land back.. which was illegally taken away by jewish migrants . who claim it was their land … Because God says so…. ( yeah sure ..)
but the USA is sooo controlled by the Israeli lobbiest.. that anything that has a remote hint of synpathizing with the 1/2 MILLION people that have been left with out a home and are now refugees in neighboring nations because they were kickout of their land to make room for the jews so they could have a homeland after the holocaust…. then everyone then throws a whooha.

on both side are victims and on both sides are heros and villains… both sides have done wrong… who is the media to decide then who is the bad one …
I dont see a problem with showing some solidarity to the palestenians by wearing the scarfs….
ohh wait I forgot… the media is own by jews both is washington and los angeles … so what they say goes …..

  56. dee says – reply to this

  58. Jessic says – reply to this

    258

well im here to correct our dear ignorant Fox News talking head and columnist Michelle Malki…this traditional head dress is worn by many many muslims or arabs.
Is she implying that all the men who wear the Keffiyah are islamic murderers??? way to stereotype Michelle…GOOD JOB….!
And for her to call these fashion designers ignorant right after her judging all muslim men……i think its a good idea for us to be comfortable with other races, religions and ethnicities, who the hell cares if she wants to wear a Keffiyah…

Dunkin' Donuts is a weak company for pulling the ad, not that they were all great before that.

  59. Sam says – reply to this

    259

this obviously is not a world-changing controversy that will forever impact american lives. the bigger issue this post has to do with is the fact that the keffiyeh has become fashionable in the first place in the west. there are so many creative and talented people in the world and there are definitely other things to contribute to fashion than keffiyeh's. popularizing the keffiyeh is condoning the message that it does symbolize for some people, particularly those in the middle east. whether you are a devout muslim or jew, what you wear is very much a demonstration of your political and religious leanings. this is not a fair comparisson, but this is just like taking gang colors and symbols and printing them on shirts, hats, and engraving them in jewlery to sell all over the place, but then ignoring the roots of those symbols.

in the same way that one should be responsible to know where they get their diamonds and coffee, every person is equally responsible to know what it is they are wearing and not just blindly accept that it does not matter because everyone else is wearing it.

at the end of the day, rachel ray's scarf looks is pretty clearly not a keffiyeh and i don't think any one needs to worry about adding her to the f.b.i's terrorist watch list.

and more importantly, even if it was a keffiyeh and ray was aware of that and its political symbolism, that's her choice. it's the gift of being american.

  60. meeeee says – reply to this

    260

Well, aside from what THEY say it looks like, it's ugly and distracting….she needs a new stylist!

  61. hotred says – reply to this

    right wing? try compassionate.
ignorance is no excuse for intolerance. and it's intolerant to wear this scarf.
if you've ever been bombed or shot coming out of a wedding or family event by folks wearing this scarf as most of my family has been, you might feel differently.

it's really the equivalent to many of us of a swastika. wearing this scarf is incredibly insensitive.

  62. EuropE says – reply to this

It's just a scarf, I don't think Rachel Ray or her stylist or Dunkin Donuts gives a rats ass about Palestinian Fundamentalists, frankly I don't either. Dunkin Donuts should tell every conservative who has an issue with a simple silk black and white scarf to fuck off and don't look at the ad if they want to see it that way. Idiots.

I wore a scarf like that for years as a symbol of support of Palestinians. You know, the oppressed people iof Gaza and the West Bank. Malkin is talking crazy. What should be addressed is why people are wearing it without knowing the meaning behind it.

  78. Sara says – reply to this

    278

    This is extremely RIDICULOUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
By dunkin doughnuts removing this add it is agreeing that anything related to any Arab culture is terrorist related. That is extremely IGNORANT of FOX

It just like arab's refusing to drink STARBUCKS because it represents America and they don't want to support a war-encouraging, double-faced, world-dividing violence-supporting country. The SCARF and STARBUCKS are completely irrelevant to what a minority of Arab's or American's do and believe in.

  80. Daisy says – reply to this

    280

This is ridiculous. I have a couple of versions of this type of scarf. I got my first one 10 years ago when I was 13 for a festival. I wasn't making a statement, it just kept protected from the sun - hence why people in the middle east wear them! But obviously in the eyes of Fox News I'm a 'muslim terrorist' not a fair skinned skin cancer magnet.

  81. j says – reply to this

    281

oh please… american people are so retarded. those scarves have been fashion items in europe for several years, now totally passé. if rachel should be punished of anything, it should be of being two years behind in her dress sense.
and any idiot knows that the best way of demystifying a symbol is by popularizing it. if teenagers everywhere wore those scarves, no one would care.
"has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad" –> give me a break!

    282

whats wrong with arab men? i dont understand the controversy. oh, i get it. racism. if you have brown skin you must be a terrorist. and all those bad middle eastern people read the koran so anyone here who does is a terrorist. now i totally get the bush logic. damn. it took 8 years.

  83. luvbug says – reply to this

    283

why is fox news even reporting on this? not only are we fighting a war we should have never been involved in, but we are headed into a major recession. instead of focusing on a made up controversy, fox news should get over their right wing egos and report on real news.

  84. Judy says – reply to this

    284

I agree — Who cares if it looks like a keffiyah? I wear one to show my solidarity with the Palestinian people, and since I am a pacifist, it is certainly not a call to jihad!

I call it the Arafat scarf. In Europe it is fashion for a while now to wear it… The past 2 winters a lot of people were walking around with one. It used to be only the 80's punk style people that were wearng it..

Anyways, I wouldn't wear the one that resembles the Arafat scarf exactly wit the colors and all. I do have one in pink with silver though :)

I think it's a little overreacted to not air the commercial..

But what's up with her stylist… it doesn't really match her outfit and she's wearing it the wrong way (and i dont mean she should wear it on her head!)
