Scarf Controversy

Filed under: Fashion Smashion > Rachael Ray

rachelraydunkin.jpg

What's in a scarf????

Well, Rachel Ray wore a scarf in a Dunkin' Donuts commercial that threw the conservatives into a tizzy, according to reports.

Ray wore a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men (see photo above).

Fox News talking head and columnist Michelle Malkin explained, "The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."

Dunkin' Donuts at first dismissed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh.

But, the right-wing firestorm continued on the internets and by yesterday, Dunkin' Donuts decided it was easier to yank the ad.

Dunkin' Donuts said in a statement, "In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial."

What do U think of the controversy?

RaRay's stylist is getting no bonus this Christmas!

Re: DreamG – I can't even believe you could even think this way. It is a piece of material not an ak 47 pointed at your head! And your swastika, yes your, as in belonging to you, is allowed in America.

    303

People are so fucking ignorant. It's obviously NOT a keffiyah. And who cares if it was. People have way too much time on their hands if they're worried about this. Oops! Looks like I'VE got too much time on my hands too. =)

    304

Maybe there was no underlying meaning behind the scarf but in today’s world why would you even want to appear in something even remotely related to terrorists. People need to be proud of our country and realize that there are many many people out there fighting for us everyday. Everyone needs to show more patriotism right now and support our country not the people’s country's who are trying to destroy us.

that is way too funny! i recently went to the yearly fundraiser she does at her high school and this lady got up to ask a question and said "i don't like the scarves you've been wearing lately" haha it was great. this fat old lady wearing a lovely cotton walmart ensemble was giving her fashion tips :) now she's a muslim terrorist? people have a lot to say about my Rach but this is the best by far. she did tell the lady that she doesn't dress herself and that she'd have to take her problem up w/ her stylist.

    315

This is beyond lame. A scarf….a SCARF? What fucking country IS THIS? Yes, there are terrorists in the world…but they're not all Arab and not every Arab is one. It's gotten to the point where it's very clear we'll have to apologize to the Middle Eastern nationalities like we did the Japanese after WWII.
    *********
And how absolutely lame for freaking Dunkin' Donuts to bow to that kind of infantile criticism. Brush it off and softly ridicule the accusation and it would go away.
    *********
At the same time, you're dealing with the kind of people who cover up statues 'naked breasts' or are afraid of gay Teletubbies. The 21st century has certainly gotten off to an embarrassing start.

    316

Another reason why American politics have their heads so far up their fucking asses. Let's try to spread fear into all Americans by claiming that scarf represents terrorism. WTF? You have nothing else to complain about? Next, skiiers masks are going to be banned because they cover your face. Grow the fuck up and find some real reason to complain about. If we were in Europe, no one would give a fuck.

  17. Alliso says – reply to this

    317

A scarf? Really? I think the cons need to lighten up before all we have left are white clothes to avoid upsetting anyone.

"Wait! Jesus wore white! That's not allowed either!"

Crap…make it blue with white polka dots is all we are allowed to wear.

  18. Giadda says – reply to this

RACHEL Ray is SEXY…. IF you like your women to have the voice of a 70 year old smoker….. I normally don't recommend women get boob jobs, but Rachel needs some serious work.

    319

    Perez,
I would just like to say that the man quoted in this entry doesn't know what he is talking about. As an Arab woman I can tell in a second that she is not wearing a "keffiyeh" (it is actually pronounced gehfeiyah in my dialect). And what is he talking about "come to symbolize murderous Palestinian Jihad"? My father wears one everyday to work, it is our equivalent of a nice hat with your work suit. The Gehfeiyah is not a symbol of murderers! It is a symbol of Arabs! Just go to google, type in traditional Arab dress or something like that and you will see it there.
This man talks about ignorance? Well he is the one that does not know what he is talking about. What if I was to say that I thought every man in a suit was an idiot because of Bush? That is parallel to what this man is saying.
I just wish people that have a voice in the media would know what they were talking about before they opened their mouth and let their lack of intelligence shine.
To Malkin all I have to say is that if he were here in my country and insulted us like that we would simply say "Kis Umik."

  20. mslove says – reply to this

so traditionally Fox news. "the paranoids are out to get me" syndrome. They LOVE to stir up a bunch of crap. Kinda like the "war on Christmas" bullshit every year. I guess Rachel Ray should have had on a black cocktail dress with a flag pin on. That would have made them happy. It's funny how this is the type of story they decide to report on. Well played Fox News. You have won the war on Dunkin Donuts. …for now!

This really ticked me off. What a stupid stupid issue. Hey Michelle people are dying around the world why don't you give a fuck about them.

  49. brinda says – reply to this

i think people are missing the point that this is NOT a keffiyeh, it may have some similar attributes however it is not one nor is it worn like one. I almost find this amusing as weve been wearing them in the UK for years in fact theyve been worn for so long theyre now out of season. Cleary america needs to loosen up. In so many countries weve gradually depleted the right to freedom of speech and now it appears right-wing USA is intent on removing freedom of expression or creativity.

people started wearing these in britain as a political statement (pro-palestine, anti-iraq war etc)

then a few celebs wore them, people started picking them up on holiday in arab countries….they became mainstream and a fashion statement. most people dont know it's political origins, heck most Brits dont know that the scarves are arab!

anyways, literally EVERY person in britain has one. cos they're warm yet not too heavy so they're perfect for our weather. that scarf she's wearing is just a black and white scarf, it is so blatently not any kind of political statement.

well done america for once again pushing that muslim=terrorist when oh surprise, surprise it doesnt.

a swastika isn't a gun either, but it's a symbol of hate crimes and genocide.
it's impossible to explain to someone who lacks compassion why this would be threatening or upsetting to a minority.

However, something that never stops amazing me is some of its people's ignorance and fear to akcnowledge other cultures. What if it was a keffiyah… This garnment is wore all over the middle east, Muslims, Christians and Jews wear it because it is a way to protect their head from the sun.The saudis wear it red and white instead of white and black. So let's say tomorrow a terrorist group like ETA, or FARC decides to wear black hats. I everyone that wears a black hat going to be considered a to be making allusion to the terrorists? Sick that Dunkin Donuts has chosen to lend credence to the viewpoint that a traditional part of Arab garb now represents terrorism. I would feel terrible if I were an Arab and now felt that walking outside in my traditional dress I have to feel like American society brands me as a terrorist. Dunkin Donuts move in pulling the add was extremely divisive and I think they owe a serious apology to the Arab community for the statement they have made by pulling the add. Just because a small group of leftist radicals have begun to wear kaffiyahs as a symbol of solidarity with Yassir Arafat does not mean that we should brand this beautiful and traditional part of arab garb, worn by millions around the world, as a part of terrorism.

It is like an american flag or a crucifix or the star of david or any other type of cultural/religious item.. it's just something that comes with a culture - if we're associating it with death well then im gonna associate the american flag with stupidity, ignorance, death, destruction, lying, secrets, evil… shall i continue?

I think this is a bunch of B.S. who cares what kind of scarf she is wearing, I am sure when Rachel got up that morning her intent was not to wear a Keffiyah. Dunkin Donuts just gave into Terrorism, aren't we proud of them. Fucking idots.

Re: veedz – Just give up, because someone is always gonna read too much into things! Like how you can probably spell Satan a few times with the letters in my post, so I obviously worship the devil.

There should be no goddamn reason to wear this scarf in the first place. Her stylist is not a stylist if this is the best outfit she could come up with for a national television commercial. Walk into H&M and buy a $29 sundress. There! Stylist for hire! By the way, the wackos out there are alive and well! Pulling a commercial over a SCARF~ What the fuck.
