What's in a scarf????
Well, Rachel Ray wore a scarf in a Dunkin' Donuts commercial that threw the conservatives into a tizzy, according to reports.
Ray wore a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men (see photo above).
Fox News talking head and columnist Michelle Malkin explained, "The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."
Dunkin' Donuts at first dismissed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh.
But, the right-wing firestorm continued on the internets and by yesterday, Dunkin' Donuts decided it was easier to yank the ad.
Dunkin' Donuts said in a statement, "In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial."

The 'scarf' is currently being worn as a fashion item for the past season all over europe (haven't been to the US recently so can't comment on that)…perhaps it is being worn as a statement in response to this hideous and unjust war, perhaps its just a fashion statement, lets face it young people have always expressed their political opinions through fashion…. perhaps these people should just get over it and let go the scarf issue… the damage done by this war is enough, we don't need stupidity to keep it going - ok, yes so we have Bush and Blair/Brown and they are stupid enough for a lifetime…let. the. scarf. be.

The keffiyeh is a traditional headdress worn by men across the Islamic world for hundreds of years - from the Middle East to East Africa, North Africa… Other than general ignorance and kneejerk Islamophobia, I can see no reason for people to assume that it signifies any sort of fanatacism in the wearer.

Dear Perez, I am 3/4 Lebanese/ 1/4 Palestinian and am sick of hearing all this bs about Arab djihad. Fyi, djihad isn't as common a concept as America seems to think. To set the record straight, a keffiyeh is simply an Arab scarf, no symbolism intended. My great-grandfather might have worn one, and he was a Christian politician fighting for peace between Israel and Palestine in the UN. (You don't necessarily have to be Muslim, see, or terrorist to wear a simple scarf!) Just to set the record straight.
