Scarf Controversy
Filed under: Fashion Smashion > Rachael Ray
What's in a scarf????
Well, Rachel Ray wore a scarf in a Dunkin' Donuts commercial that threw the conservatives into a tizzy, according to reports.
Ray wore a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men (see photo above).
Fox News talking head and columnist Michelle Malkin explained, "The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."
Dunkin' Donuts at first dismissed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh.
But, the right-wing firestorm continued on the internets and by yesterday, Dunkin' Donuts decided it was easier to yank the ad.
Dunkin' Donuts said in a statement, "In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial."
What do U think of the controversy?
RaRay's stylist is getting no bonus this Christmas!

people need to understand that the keffiyeh has nothing to do with jihad. It's actually a very cultural part of the middle east and the way people from there dress. People in Saudi Arabia for example, wear a different coloured one than those in Palestine etc. It just so happens that people whole are"terrorists" wear this traditional scarf and so ignorant people like those living in the US assume that's what only terrorists wear.
It's NOT just a scarf otherwise 800 people would NOT have answered the post! The first time i saw the picture the scarf stricked me as pro-palestinian INDEED. So she should know better… or maybe she does and wanted the attention?
That is SO typically Americanishly silly! My god, I live in Holland, and about 15 years ago these things were all of a sudden totally hot over here… No one gave a crap about the poor scarf's heritage. Today they're back…and they're way yummy again! We've got them in black and white, black and dark pink, light pink, dark purple…yellow, if you wanna go really crazy…what is up America?!
Hummm, RR is part of Oprah, which is part of the Left….duh, I wonder why the Right is all over her. Hum, Perez, you are a NYU boy, ya knoz betta!
People should never bow to the pressure placed on them by these psychotic fanatics. We need to continue the good fight and show the extremist conservatives that their days are numbered.
Refuse to buy and of their products and email them to let them know how disgusted you are that they caved in.
Re: yaya – People wear those Che G… (however you spell his fucking name) shirts everywhere. Perhaps you want them banned too.
Its a free fucking country so if you dont like it, stop buying their products or just stfu for once.
who the fuck cares? i mean, it's a stylish, black and white scarf. people are way too sensitive AND racist these days. they really need to relax. it's no wonder why this stupid war keeps going on…because we're still fighting over little things like what rachael ray wore on a dunkin donuts commercial! look at the big picture, people!
That is just stupid, these things have been fashionable off and on over here in Holland for the past fifteen years…we got them in pink, purple, white/black, yellow, for the real fashion dare devils…never saw Arafat with one of the cute colored ones…
Re: GYPSY – seriously, learn some basic human respect. people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
it's not a keffiyeh.. keffiyehs are checkered black and white. and for the record, they used to be traditionally worn by Arab men in small villages but now they are worn to symbolize solidarity with ordinary Palestinians, it has nothing to do with jihad.. their expert needs a new brain and some much delayed lessons in culture and history… douche.
All those Brits saying "oh they don't mean anything" - no you just don't understand what they mean!
urban outfitters sells them, i got one backpacking in slovakia of all places, 2 years ago, CHILL OUT!
US media is pretty much owned by the Jews, esp FOX News. Of course they're going to make a big deal out of nothing. Perez, please no more posts from FOX News. Check out BBC for unbiased coverage. Thanks.
Michelle Malkin is a racist……….and she' a friigin chink
Id just like to point out that Palestinians are not terrorists, they are a nation who have had to battle war because their lands were stripped from them. Such a shame that any kind of recognition they get is immediately criticized. In my opinion, this action alone proves to show how the right wing leaders are in fact the ones who are ignorant.
Dunkin Donuts SUCKS!!!! If they are so easily frightened by FOX new saying that Rachel Ray's scarf looks like a "terrorist" then they do not deserve any American's money or business. IDIOTS!!!!
My husband and his family are Arabic and Christian (yes they do exist). They are not terrorist but they wear this scarf. It is traditional. They have pictues of their greart grandfather wearing them before the first suicide bomber or Arafat were even born. It's like saying Timothy McVey wore camoflauge and a buzz cut so all camoflauges buzz cutted white boys are secretly symbolizing their love for blowing up federal buildings. Give me a break! ALL ARABS ARE NOT TERRORISTS. ALL ARABS ARE NOT MUSLIM. ALL MUSLIMS ARE NOT TERRORISTS!
who cares?
honestly, it's a scarf, not terrorist garb.
and secondly, its pretty racist that they associate any muslim clothing with terrorism.
i think she should wear it theres to many stupid things out there that people scream abo0ut. what next? you have to shit at 1pm only?
Fuck, man…let's go to Krispy Kremes…mmm
The fact that you're quoting Michelle Malkin just goes to show that it's nothing but a blown up, right wing fed controversy. Please.
Really…..REALLY?!
I am so sick of this crap. "Oh we must be politically correct for the .000005% of the population that may be offended!"
This is such b.s.
what fucking dumbasses
Michelle Malkin=idiot
My Culture Is Not A Trend.
Ridiculous
hahaha! ridiculous! everyone wears those scarves around university in australia. they are sold like everywhere.
or wowsers as theyre called over here. can not stand them.
conservatives are hilarious
PLEASE, everyone here in Spain wears those scarfs…
Goddamn conservatives and their paranoia.
To begin with, Fox News was always known to be a bias news station so who gives a shit what they think! Jihad is fighting against evil, its self defense, we’re not Bush here (killing incent people under the name of democracy), Jihad is fighting for our freedom not suicide bombing. Anyways I can babble on for hours and it wouldn’t make a difference. It’s so easy to make a fuss over something so stupid but to fight for something that matters, YA right!
That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard, it's a frickin scarf. Maybe if she was wearing it on her head, sure start something. I think Americans are overly paranoid and make issues out of nothing…. yes I'm from Canada
whatever! so they are offending people cause shes wearing a scarf and talking about iced coffee. WHAT?!
This is just stupid. Shall we say american right wingers have gone completely mad. Do we all remember what started WW1 and WW2. Say what you want to say, be who you want to be. Don't let anyone tell you what you can and cannot say, do or wear. I'm Canadian and love being apart of a country that accepts and promotes cultural differences. Can you imagine if we were all the same. Disgusting………………………………………
Fucking stupid..
its a fucking scarf.
This is what they're wasting their time on.
Wearing a keffiyeh is SYMBOLIC in that it is a reminder of the human rights atrocities being committted in Palestine by the murderous Israelis! We all should be wearing one. And for the record, a true keffiyeh is checkered, it does not have paisleys…
I hope that this is the end of this. How ironic. I vote we boycott Dunkin Donuts for griving into jokers like Fox News. Offend people that is Fox's MO Besides who needs Dunkin Donuts they are Fat pushers.
Re: DMAN – You ALWAYS need a scarf-SHOVED DOWN YOUR THROAT! or at least tying your hands behind your back so you can't type any more stupidity, as you usually do!
People are so stupid. Right wingers - hey, aren't they the people who tap their feet in airport bathrooms to make contact with other gay men? Aren't they the ones paying the hookers to give them blow jobs? Oh yeah, aren't they the pedophiles, lying, coke snorting jerks who try to impose their ways on everyone else?
Why doesn't the government start on worrying on something more important? A scarf is a scarf. It's just too damn bad she wore an "Arab Headress" on her neck. It's trendy.
Okay so I would have looked at that and said she's wearing an ugly scarf. I would never associated it with terrorism or anything of that sort and I don't think many people would. Who cares???? And I don't even like Rachael Ray!!!!!!
If it would have been a white hood would that offend? Robert Byrd probably would not mind, but I bet Obama would.
I cant believe I am saying this but I agree with them that the scarf does look like what Arabs wear and I agree with Dunkin Donuts in taking it down. I have to say that Dunkins is way better than Starbucks!!
Re: Crysta – go eat your dog.
Oh my goodness! It is not a symbol of terrorism! I wish people would stop being freaking ignorant! does it annoy me that Rachel Ray and other "celebrities" are wearing it? Yes, because they don't know the meaning behind it, and they are wearing it for the sake of "fashion"… but I would never suggest pulling the ad because the kefeyyah is a terrorist article of clothing! Argh!
"murderous Palestinian jihad" are you serious!?!? It's a traditional garment worn across much of the middle east, and although it became a symbol of the Palestinian intifada or "throwing off" or RESISTANCE (duh) it is in no way a symbol of murder. It symbolizes a legitimate resistance against an illegal military occupation. I personally dislike its adoption by hipsters and their ilk, but for God's sake, this just demonstrates how ignorant the general populace is of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. God forbid a symbol of middle eastern culture become a part of mainstream American culture. Incidentally, the fact that it set off a right wing firestorm is a solid indicator that it should have been a non-issue to begin with.
Ya-Allah ::slaps forehead::
Translation: "My God…" Nobody panic…
This is the kind of thing that makes it so hard for Christians (like myself). It's just a scarf, for goodness' sakes! I wish that instead of getting all in a tizzy over a scarf (that btw, is similar to what many celebs and non-celebs wear), those "concerned Christians/conservatives" would spread Jesus' love by helping out at a homeless shelter, or reading to children—something other than complaining about a minor Dunkin Donuts commercial!!!
SHE REMINDS ME OF KELLY CLARKSON!!!!!!!!!
ESPECIALLY NOW THAT KELLY IS GOTTEN CHUNKY
LOL.
man what is the world comin too?
Well I love how fear, ignorance, and well prejudice are allowed over a piece of clothing that it is like a piece of muslim traditional wear. Just because someone even if they are muslim wear this piece of clothing does not make them a terrorist. It is part of their culture and btw in fashion in America also right now. Are we living in 1950's America?
pure ignorance, how can you lable the traditional dress of millions terrorist apparel.
Oh well. It's about the only cute thing she's ever worn.
Its true!! they symbolize a lot, my mates dad he's iranian screwed at her for wearing one, esp a green one because that symbolised pakistan!! i mean really does she wanna cause some more middle-eastern war shit!! …….. i plead guilty to owning one and i've worn it once…. but i'm not a celeb
(thats no excuse)
WTF!?!??!?!?!? These fucking media make up so much false shit so they can corrupt the minds of others and react in such an offended way like the scarf will get off her neck and come and shoot you. What the hell is up with that. People need to grow the fuck up and take their head out from up their ass !! Arrghhh This shit makes me sooooooooooooo angry!!!
OMG! JUST LOOKS LIKE A PRETTY SCARF TO ME. PEOPLE ARE SOOO SENSITIVE
OMG! WOOT WOOT!!!!!
WOOTWOOTWOOTWOOTWOOOOOOOT!
THIS HAS MADE MY DAY.
i am sofa king glad someone finally started ripping on these scarves!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THEY SUCK!
rachel's isn't that similar to the ones that are all the rage, but the point is they suck. not because of what FoXNews says but
because…THIS is what they represent: an absolute lack of creative or individual expression
what. so. ever.
THEY SUCK!
they got mass produced, watered down,
and everyone just started wrapping the things around their neck, with no idea of
what they were supposed to represent.
i can just hear her stylist, "weee r goin-g to put this onnnn you because they are SO HOT right now!"
those things are EVERYWHERE because they
are "hip".
die hipster scum.
grab a clue, an identity, and quit being ironic.
jump off the neon hoodie, hamas scarf, crooked hat, nike dunks wagon.
get a
generation of your own and quit biting off the 80s'.
and everyone else: the moment you see something become popular - and you buy into that - you show the world how absolutely unoriginal you can be.
snore.
be yourself.
be interesting.
quit following the herd like a little sheep.
Why dont we all write letters or ahve apetition sent to Dunkin donuts to put it back on the air? We should ! We also have a voice and all 800 or more of us all apparently have computers. Lets email people and let them know we are outraged that they would listen to these loonys!!!
EXCUSE ME, I have that scarf.. and its from Urban Outfitters thanks
Re: Lorela – awesome comment. my sentiments exactly! sometimes i truly am embarrassed to be from these united (= to we all dress exactly alike) states.
jessica alba, lindsay, amanda bynes, fergie & many other celebs are wearing those sir allistair raj (i don't know the spelling) scarves that look exactly like the one rachel is wearing. i so thought they were ugly & looked like the ones worn by terrorists. BTW i wanted to point out that jimmy idiot carter put flowers on the grave of arafat on his recent trip to the middle east. so perez you are making fun of rachel for the symbolize behind a scarf she didn't know but i didn't see anything on your sight about carter's stupidity & slap in the face to all the victims of 911 & terrorist attacks as well as jews. the liberal media was pretty hush about that.
How ridiculous! It's a scarf, however you look at it. I wore them all throug the 80s…just because I liked them!
Absurd!! Fucking Fox
I've worked in the Middle East with Bedouin for over 10 years. The keffiyeh can be a tribal or political statement but when translated to the west (esp in Europe in the last few years ) IT IS Fashion. Nothing more nothing less. None of these Hoxton or Soho or Silverlake hipsters know or care -except in a surface way - about politics in the Middle East.
and I will say my keffiyah, purchased in a very Fundi and non-tourist town in Jordan was made in Hong Kong!
Conservatives are over-reacting. Rachael Ray is a clueless idiot wearing a fug scarf. That is all.
who the fuck even cares about Muslims any way. if you are in this country and you were not born here get the fuck out if you don't like our commercials… jesus! stupid shit
Everyone wears that in Australia.
It was even an icon for one of the Australian idol finalist.
Get over it America!
the scarf symbolizes cultural pride, even if it LOOKS like it its making that symbolism less meaningful
Wow, this is huge PR for Dunkin Donuts. That is a cute scarf. Too bad about it looking like a keffiyah.
omg is this serious? those scarves are like the latest trend alot of the teenagers and younger adults are wearing here in australia lol.
Are you fucking serious. This is the gayest shit I've ever heard.
clearly a case of political correctness gone mad
fuck me …only in america
ridiculous. seriously. not sure where rachel is located, but scarves like that are sold all over nyc streets and both guys and girls wear them. it's fashion, not terrorism. and shame on dunkin donuts for giving in to such stupidity.
Jihad doesn't mean what the media wants us to think it does. Not violence, not war, but upholding what one believes to be right. For extremist muslims, this can mean resorting to violence, even though this does not follow the qu'ran.
fox news blows. end of story.
What the hell is the big deal? Everyone is wearing them here in NZ and most people know what they are. While the scarf has been more commonly attatched the image of terrorists, its been around for years in the middle east, symbolic of nothing more than a piece of clothing! get over it people!
This scarf has the pattern of the Kafieyah on it, but its a smaller version with frills which is why its so easy to wear.
It does not symbolise terroris, When people put this scarf on, they need to remember the true meaning which is soliderity with the palestinian people and ackowledging their sufferings after their homeland was robbed from them by the jews.Plain and simple.
The RED AND WHITE one is worn by arab men all over the middle east and that means a unity in the arab culture. The BACK AND WHITE one came out much latter to show the sorrow and mourning in the killings of Palestinians.
So next time you want to be treny and out in on, wether its a real one or a look a like, think about why youre putting it on. And lets say Miss Ray did this intentioannly (i highly dount) i would still applaud her for shing support to a people who are deemed as terrorists. I mean, come on.. if your country was stolen from u and your ppl killed, you would act chaotic.. doesnt help that CNN makes Palestinians looks even crazier.
Micehelle Malkin and MANY top heads at Fox are jews… thats enough said.
American conservative organizations that are supposedly "morality-driven" are the biggest douche-cunts in America who are leading this country to utter chaos.
everyone needs to chill the fuck out!!! it's only a scarf.
Everytime u watch fox news u'll get dumber, they instill fear and spread so much hatred and propaganda it's disgusting… and plus that fucktard michelle malkin is such a fucking moron she is the biggest racist and a disgrace to women and america. i'm not surprised she said this shit go figure. Dunkin Donuts should get some balls and air that commericial even more to rub it in their damn faces. don't ever let fox news run shit.
in australia people wear those scarfs all the tme its like a fashion trend and no one has ever said a thing about them americas are crazy
A keffiyeh is a keffiyeh and people can't say its just a scarf for fashion purposes. people should be aware of what they are wearing at all times for it speaks about who they are. Things mean something whether they are in fashion or not. A red maple leaf symbolizes canada regardless if its on a flag or on a t-shirt or a sticker or on underwear. Having said that, a keffiyeh does not by any means symbolizes the supporting of "murderous Palestinian jihad" or "muslim terrorists" it actually symbolizes peoples sympathy with the Palestinians and the hell they have gone through and are still going through because of the israeli invasion. it is a shame to see people wearing it when they don't even know what it means. Educate yourself and don't listen to american news its full of bs!
Everyone's wearing those damn things!
Middle East Chic!
it is really bad how most people say that KAFIYA are worn by terrorist ,all arabs wear them and this doesnt mean that all arabs are terririst besides i ahve an arab friend in UK and she is from dubai her dad wears this not only palastinians it is something cultural ,nothing related with being terrorists …… and besides its a fashion now ….. funny they took it from arab and they are saying that it resembles something related to terrorisim go get a lifee
that scarf is from urban outfitters and its damn cute
As an Arab- American, i think the scarf is amazing. And for them to say that it symbolizes "murderous Palestinian jihad" is actually outlandishly ridiculous. The scarf symbolizes something different to everyone, and if they want to play the offensive card i find that extremely offensive. So all in all, i love the scarf, think its Dunkin Donuts loss, and they'll probably be getting a ton more complaints from the "left-wing"
uhmm - those scarfs are totally in fashion right now ; especially in the DC area - EVERYONE rocks those things! who cares what she;s wearing anyways?
I think thats absolutly ridiculous…. people have to take offense to everything now adays…
You Yanks are fucking insane! Grow a real issue! Oh wait bush, healthcare, iraq, gun violence…..lets get pissed about a fucking scarf! Give me a break. Only in Amercia.
One has to always look at the intent behind someone's actions to determine if there if fact exists any relevance to what is being proposed by ridiculous inidividuals. It is obvious that Rachel is just wearing a scarf. She does not appear, by wearing said scarf, to be intending to emulate or mimic any extremists groups. How absolutely assasine to think that there is a connection between the two. I do not agree whatsoever with Dunkin Donuts pulling this advertisement. They should not have caved into pressure from inidividuals who appear to see an imaginary link between an American Christian woman and an Arab extremist clothing garment. ABSOULTELY FUCKING RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you're going to rag on Rachel you might as well rag on EVERY celebrity in hollywood who wears these types of scarves. The pattern of the scarves in the middle east represent certain tribes just like plaids in scotland represent certain clans. I hardly think paisley represents the pLO. I'm taking my coffee and pastry dollars elsewhere, fuck giving it to a company that caves in to Faux News pressure.
Oh yeah, sure, it's a beautiful scarf. Why didn't her stylist give her a t-shirt with a swastika on it to complete the ensemble?
Re: Roula –
WELL SAID!!!
I wore these scarves in the 80s when I was in college. They're cheap, you can buy them on the street, they don't come untied (I live in Chicago where it can be really cold and windy) and they look cool. This is bothering people? FOX news has gone off the deep end. They're on their xenophobic warm-up getting really for the general election when they will try everything indirect to scare people from voting for Obama.
People, what are you talking about ?
Wtf? I've got a scarf just like this! clearly some fat retard was online, saw it, made a comment and they've run with it.
Why don't they just go to Krispy Kreme if they're that offended! ;O)
Re: veedz – I concur!!!!!!
Over a scraf??!! thats unreal, who the hell cares. you can pick almost anything apart and find something "discriminating" about it. faaak people need to get lives ..seriously.
Hasn't anyone ever heard of the idea of normalizing something and rendering it's previous counterculture references useless? You know like punk clothes at Hot Topic - suddenly red plaid is trendy and fashionable, not rebelling against trendiness and consumerism. Render it's symbolism useless and then you've taken away it's perceived power. Stupid right winger Fox columnist idiot.
OMG!! who was the dumb shit who complained about this!!! fucking douchebag, Honestly.
Its soo stupid its a freakin scarf people worry about the economy or something not what a celebrity wore its not like she was dressed like a kkk now thts when you complain
FUCKING RIDICULOUS!!! looks something of the sort! 2 Words: FUCKING RIDICULOUS!
its an urban outfitters scarf for fucks sake.
