Scarf Controversy

Filed under: Fashion Smashion > Rachael Ray

rachelraydunkin.jpg

What's in a scarf????

Well, Rachel Ray wore a scarf in a Dunkin' Donuts commercial that threw the conservatives into a tizzy, according to reports.

Ray wore a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men (see photo above).

Fox News talking head and columnist Michelle Malkin explained, "The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad. Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons."

Dunkin' Donuts at first dismissed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh.

But, the right-wing firestorm continued on the internets and by yesterday, Dunkin' Donuts decided it was easier to yank the ad.

Dunkin' Donuts said in a statement, "In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial."

What do U think of the controversy?

RaRay's stylist is getting no bonus this Christmas!

people need to understand that the keffiyeh has nothing to do with jihad. It's actually a very cultural part of the middle east and the way people from there dress. People in Saudi Arabia for example, wear a different coloured one than those in Palestine etc. It just so happens that people whole are"terrorists" wear this traditional scarf and so ignorant people like those living in the US assume that's what only terrorists wear.

    802

It's NOT just a scarf otherwise 800 people would NOT have answered the post! The first time i saw the picture the scarf stricked me as pro-palestinian INDEED. So she should know better… or maybe she does and wanted the attention?

That is SO typically Americanishly silly! My god, I live in Holland, and about 15 years ago these things were all of a sudden totally hot over here… No one gave a crap about the poor scarf's heritage. Today they're back…and they're way yummy again! We've got them in black and white, black and dark pink, light pink, dark purple…yellow, if you wanna go really crazy…what is up America?!

People should never bow to the pressure placed on them by these psychotic fanatics. We need to continue the good fight and show the extremist conservatives that their days are numbered.

Refuse to buy and of their products and email them to let them know how disgusted you are that they caved in.

Re: yaya – People wear those Che G… (however you spell his fucking name) shirts everywhere. Perhaps you want them banned too.
Its a free fucking country so if you dont like it, stop buying their products or just stfu for once.

    807

who the fuck cares? i mean, it's a stylish, black and white scarf. people are way too sensitive AND racist these days. they really need to relax. it's no wonder why this stupid war keeps going on…because we're still fighting over little things like what rachael ray wore on a dunkin donuts commercial! look at the big picture, people!

  8. 808

That is just stupid, these things have been fashionable off and on over here in Holland for the past fifteen years…we got them in pink, purple, white/black, yellow, for the real fashion dare devils…never saw Arafat with one of the cute colored ones…

    810

it's not a keffiyeh.. keffiyehs are checkered black and white. and for the record, they used to be traditionally worn by Arab men in small villages but now they are worn to symbolize solidarity with ordinary Palestinians, it has nothing to do with jihad.. their expert needs a new brain and some much delayed lessons in culture and history… douche.

All those Brits saying "oh they don't mean anything" - no you just don't understand what they mean!

Id just like to point out that Palestinians are not terrorists, they are a nation who have had to battle war because their lands were stripped from them. Such a shame that any kind of recognition they get is immediately criticized. In my opinion, this action alone proves to show how the right wing leaders are in fact the ones who are ignorant.

  15. mary says – reply to this

    815

Dunkin Donuts SUCKS!!!! If they are so easily frightened by FOX new saying that Rachel Ray's scarf looks like a "terrorist" then they do not deserve any American's money or business. IDIOTS!!!!

    816

My husband and his family are Arabic and Christian (yes they do exist). They are not terrorist but they wear this scarf. It is traditional. They have pictues of their greart grandfather wearing them before the first suicide bomber or Arafat were even born. It's like saying Timothy McVey wore camoflauge and a buzz cut so all camoflauges buzz cutted white boys are secretly symbolizing their love for blowing up federal buildings. Give me a break! ALL ARABS ARE NOT TERRORISTS. ALL ARABS ARE NOT MUSLIM. ALL MUSLIMS ARE NOT TERRORISTS!

  17. joanna says – reply to this

    817

    who cares?
honestly, it's a scarf, not terrorist garb.
and secondly, its pretty racist that they associate any muslim clothing with terrorism.

To begin with, Fox News was always known to be a bias news station so who gives a shit what they think! Jihad is fighting against evil, its self defense, we’re not Bush here (killing incent people under the name of democracy), Jihad is fighting for our freedom not suicide bombing. Anyways I can babble on for hours and it wouldn’t make a difference. It’s so easy to make a fuss over something so stupid but to fight for something that matters, YA right!

Wearing a keffiyeh is SYMBOLIC in that it is a reminder of the human rights atrocities being committted in Palestine by the murderous Israelis! We all should be wearing one. And for the record, a true keffiyeh is checkered, it does not have paisleys…

    839

Okay so I would have looked at that and said she's wearing an ugly scarf. I would never associated it with terrorism or anything of that sort and I don't think many people would. Who cares???? And I don't even like Rachael Ray!!!!!!

Oh my goodness! It is not a symbol of terrorism! I wish people would stop being freaking ignorant! does it annoy me that Rachel Ray and other "celebrities" are wearing it? Yes, because they don't know the meaning behind it, and they are wearing it for the sake of "fashion"… but I would never suggest pulling the ad because the kefeyyah is a terrorist article of clothing! Argh!

  44. Free P says – reply to this

    844

"murderous Palestinian jihad" are you serious!?!? It's a traditional garment worn across much of the middle east, and although it became a symbol of the Palestinian intifada or "throwing off" or RESISTANCE (duh) it is in no way a symbol of murder. It symbolizes a legitimate resistance against an illegal military occupation. I personally dislike its adoption by hipsters and their ilk, but for God's sake, this just demonstrates how ignorant the general populace is of the Israeli Palestinian conflict. God forbid a symbol of middle eastern culture become a part of mainstream American culture. Incidentally, the fact that it set off a right wing firestorm is a solid indicator that it should have been a non-issue to begin with.

This is the kind of thing that makes it so hard for Christians (like myself). It's just a scarf, for goodness' sakes! I wish that instead of getting all in a tizzy over a scarf (that btw, is similar to what many celebs and non-celebs wear), those "concerned Christians/conservatives" would spread Jesus' love by helping out at a homeless shelter, or reading to children—something other than complaining about a minor Dunkin Donuts commercial!!!

Are we living in 1950's America?

    THEY SUCK!
rachel's isn't that similar to the ones that are all the rage, but the point is they suck. not because of what FoXNews says but
because…THIS is what they represent: an absolute lack of creative or individual expression
    what. so. ever.
    THEY SUCK!
they got mass produced, watered down,
and everyone just started wrapping the things around their neck, with no idea of
what they were supposed to represent.

BTW i wanted to point out that jimmy idiot carter put flowers on the grave of arafat on his recent trip to the middle east. so perez you are making fun of rachel for the symbolize behind a scarf she didn't know but i didn't see anything on your sight about carter's stupidity & slap in the face to all the victims of 911 & terrorist attacks as well as jews. the liberal media was pretty hush about that.

I've worked in the Middle East with Bedouin for over 10 years. The keffiyeh can be a tribal or political statement but when translated to the west (esp in Europe in the last few years ) IT IS Fashion. Nothing more nothing less. None of these Hoxton or Soho or Silverlake hipsters know or care -except in a surface way - about politics in the Middle East.
and I will say my keffiyah, purchased in a very Fundi and non-tourist town in Jordan was made in Hong Kong!

  72. 872

Jihad doesn't mean what the media wants us to think it does. Not violence, not war, but upholding what one believes to be right. For extremist muslims, this can mean resorting to violence, even though this does not follow the qu'ran.
fox news blows. end of story.

  73. Sandy says – reply to this

    873

What the hell is the big deal? Everyone is wearing them here in NZ and most people know what they are. While the scarf has been more commonly attatched the image of terrorists, its been around for years in the middle east, symbolic of nothing more than a piece of clothing! get over it people!

  74. Nazari says – reply to this

    874

This scarf has the pattern of the Kafieyah on it, but its a smaller version with frills which is why its so easy to wear.

It does not symbolise terroris, When people put this scarf on, they need to remember the true meaning which is soliderity with the palestinian people and ackowledging their sufferings after their homeland was robbed from them by the jews.Plain and simple.

The RED AND WHITE one is worn by arab men all over the middle east and that means a unity in the arab culture. The BACK AND WHITE one came out much latter to show the sorrow and mourning in the killings of Palestinians.

So next time you want to be treny and out in on, wether its a real one or a look a like, think about why youre putting it on. And lets say Miss Ray did this intentioannly (i highly dount) i would still applaud her for shing support to a people who are deemed as terrorists. I mean, come on.. if your country was stolen from u and your ppl killed, you would act chaotic.. doesnt help that CNN makes Palestinians looks even crazier.

Micehelle Malkin and MANY top heads at Fox are jews… thats enough said.

    879

A keffiyeh is a keffiyeh and people can't say its just a scarf for fashion purposes. people should be aware of what they are wearing at all times for it speaks about who they are. Things mean something whether they are in fashion or not. A red maple leaf symbolizes canada regardless if its on a flag or on a t-shirt or a sticker or on underwear. Having said that, a keffiyeh does not by any means symbolizes the supporting of "murderous Palestinian jihad" or "muslim terrorists" it actually symbolizes peoples sympathy with the Palestinians and the hell they have gone through and are still going through because of the israeli invasion. it is a shame to see people wearing it when they don't even know what it means. Educate yourself and don't listen to american news its full of bs!

As an Arab- American, i think the scarf is amazing. And for them to say that it symbolizes "murderous Palestinian jihad" is actually outlandishly ridiculous. The scarf symbolizes something different to everyone, and if they want to play the offensive card i find that extremely offensive. So all in all, i love the scarf, think its Dunkin Donuts loss, and they'll probably be getting a ton more complaints from the "left-wing"

    887

One has to always look at the intent behind someone's actions to determine if there if fact exists any relevance to what is being proposed by ridiculous inidividuals. It is obvious that Rachel is just wearing a scarf. She does not appear, by wearing said scarf, to be intending to emulate or mimic any extremists groups. How absolutely assasine to think that there is a connection between the two. I do not agree whatsoever with Dunkin Donuts pulling this advertisement. They should not have caved into pressure from inidividuals who appear to see an imaginary link between an American Christian woman and an Arab extremist clothing garment. ABSOULTELY FUCKING RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  88. dummy says – reply to this

    888

If you're going to rag on Rachel you might as well rag on EVERY celebrity in hollywood who wears these types of scarves. The pattern of the scarves in the middle east represent certain tribes just like plaids in scotland represent certain clans. I hardly think paisley represents the pLO. I'm taking my coffee and pastry dollars elsewhere, fuck giving it to a company that caves in to Faux News pressure.

I wore these scarves in the 80s when I was in college. They're cheap, you can buy them on the street, they don't come untied (I live in Chicago where it can be really cold and windy) and they look cool. This is bothering people? FOX news has gone off the deep end. They're on their xenophobic warm-up getting really for the general election when they will try everything indirect to scare people from voting for Obama.

Wtf? I've got a scarf just like this! clearly some fat retard was online, saw it, made a comment and they've run with it.

Why don't they just go to Krispy Kreme if they're that offended! ;O)

Hasn't anyone ever heard of the idea of normalizing something and rendering it's previous counterculture references useless? You know like punk clothes at Hot Topic - suddenly red plaid is trendy and fashionable, not rebelling against trendiness and consumerism. Render it's symbolism useless and then you've taken away it's perceived power. Stupid right winger Fox columnist idiot.
