Sex & The City's Big Eff Up!

We've received quite a few emails from several PerezHilton.com readers who've been lucky enough to see the new Sex and the City movie.
They've all said the same thing — that boom mics litter a few of the movie's scenes!
WTF????
How could they let this happen????
Why wouldn't they fix such an obvious gaff in post-production???
In a scene where Carrie and Big discuss their wedding vows, a microphone is seen hanging down at the top of the screen the entire time!
We're sure SATC was given a huge production budget…so, why weren't the microphones 'erased' during the editing process?
Did they blow the editing money on wardrobe?????
In addition to counting the number of cute shoes Carrie wears, we're going to be looking out for stray mics when we watch the flick this weekend!

MOVIES THEATERS HAVE EITHER 2.35 TO 1 AND 1.88 TO 1 AND IT ADJUSTS THE BLACK MATTING THAT SURROUNDS THE SCREEN BACK AND FOURTH BUT IT WAS NOT SET PROPERLY
boom mic in the shot is the camera ops job to tell the boom op if hes in the frame the editor has nothign to do with that

Often early showings are not the finalized wide screen ratio film that will be shown to paying customers in theaters. Think of it as a rough draft… it won't be in the final product.
When boom mics show on screen, it is usually because the person in the projection booth didn't frame the picture correctly. If there were really a lot of mics showing, then that is probably the reason. I can't imagine a big budget studio movie being that careless.
I haven't seen the film yet and frankly this info makes me think it's really gonna suck. If they can't even be bothered with fixing a common error like that then I have to wonder where else they cut corners. This is sounding like it's gonna be a real shambles of a movie. Going by reviews I read and a clip I saw, it sounds like they fucked up with the characters too. As a long-time fan of the show, I'm expecting that after I rent the movie from Blockbuster video, I'm probably gonna not only regret bothering but also end up thinking I wish they hadn't even bothered to make a crappy movie to taint my my positive opinion of the show and characters. I'd rather watch re-watch the episodes I liked and remembered the show at it's best then see them take it to crappy lows with bad films or specials. Do it well or don't bother.
actually, boom mikes are the theater's fault. When a theater recieves a film, it has extra pictures above and below what we're supposed to see. If the projectionist lines it up right, then we don't see any boom mikes but if they suck, then we get to see them all.
Were they able to make this old hag look decent for the movie? Did she get a neck and face lift, and have something done to those scary hands of hers?
I just saw at the 002magazine houston satc premier. It was phenomenal. My friends and I all laughed and cried immensely. Great movie, and we didn't notice any boom mics!
Hmph. Hubby won't take me to see it. Actually, we never go to the movies anymore. Lackluster Video rentals, all the way. Can't wait for it to come out on dvd!
I was at the premiere and there were no boom mikes showing. No clue what theater these people were in but, at Radio City no boom mikes showed.
It's actually quite funny that I came across this story, as I am a Presentation Manager for AMC Theatres, meaning I'm the guy in charge (overall) of the booth operations, or the running of the films.
Someone else commented on this, but I will confirm: mics are always on the film in various scenes, that is why the film is projected in a way to where the top is actually cut off. If you see the microphones, it is a result of the theatre not presenting the picture properly. I actually screened the movie (meaning I watched it to make sure the print was not damaged etc. before we start showing it at our theatre on Friday) and saw no such microphones because, again, the presentation was CORRECT.

well, i saw it. and apart from the fact that it was amazing, it was amazing. anyway, maybe it was some sort of odd homage to the show because that DEFINITELY happened a lot on the show. or maybe it was just carelessness. no matter what, it wasn't too obvious and the movie was still… AMAZING!
Just saw it last night. Great movie. The only thing I noticed was a pen laced through Carrie's tank top … then it wasn't there … It's in the scene where she and Charlotte are sitting on the bed in Carrie's apartment and they are talking about her wedding dress. She jumps up from the bed, shows them her dress and wow .. the pen is on her tank top again. I'll have to look for the mics the next time I see the movie. I loved it!!

That's not how it works. The film doesn't have boom-mics showing, the PROJECTIONIST at the theatre didn't crop it properly for the screening. It has nothing to do with the "goofs" in the filming, it's simply the projector operator matting the film incorrectly for the screen. not all theatres will have this problem, and none of the mic's will be seen when it's on dvd. it's not that they need to be erased, they're not on the final screen ratio anyway. take this piece of "news" nonsense down.

Sounds like a projection problem. There's always a bit of extra image on the top of the frame that gets masked out by the projector…unless someone in the theater screws up.

that's so odd! a few weeks ago when the film Baby Mama came out i saw it on opening night and like this situation the mics were allll over the top of the screen, not kinda, not a little bit, like the whole f'n mic! perhaps they havnt put all of the finishing touches on the film… or maybe somebody from editing recently was/is going to get FIRED ha
Saw it last night in London. Ignore all the haters this movie is absolutely amazing. The audience were crying, gasping, clapping, cheering, laughing it was so so good. I took a friend who had never watched SATC and had no attachment to the characters and even she thought it was fucking good.
Enjoy! Don't let a hanging mic get in the way of a good movie.

the sex scenes co-photoshopped with the city scenes were so most rivet and gromet. i found the "boom in picture" most drawing. I walked right up to the stage of the screen and with arms swinging, walked right up to that mic, charading it into my own hand of ad-lib, and i got mesmerised! by the sound of my own voice. it must be good to do that yeah? so… to all the cast and crew and catering and sweeping contributors to satc …. it was the mirror reverberation; a reflection of your very own projection/.
That usually just means that the projector has been put in the wrong place.
I saw it last night and didn't spot a sngle microphone. I would complain to the cinema, not the movie makers.
it was that zany light tripper of a projectionist. he got all marbly warbly in the love dept. and took the elevator back to jibbly wibbly. he nailed a sign to his front yard evergreen that read "Emmanuel!". we then led Him to the afghan, the quarter cup of blueberry ale and …… the shimmering memory of shiny side tin dresses that matched eyes and NEW YORK CITY BALLET dvd that moved me in ways that spread to moments of bcbg heels, around my house…. like my pravorite moment in series that you wear the green bodysuit…. i died. amy is your friend? goo goo great.

Just saw the movie last night in the UK, it was awesome, I love New York and SATC and I didn't even notice the boom mics! Go and watch this movie!
This is actually the cinema/theatre's fault. Seeing a boom mic means that the projectionist has not done his/her job properly and allowing this to be seen (I once read something about this on rogerebert.com, I believe).

This happens in screeners all the time. It's the projectionist's fault. It's due to showing at incorrect aspect ratio.

It was a mistake in the actual theatre…the projectionist didn't set the film correctly and showed too much of the top..it happens sometimes….not the movie editiors fault

The film wasn't matted properly, which is an issue with the projectionist NOT the filming. Someone saw it at a theater with a crappy projectionist.

The mic thing is not necessarily a post-prod error, can be down to the lining up of the print, watched it myself last night and saw nothing of the sort - and GREAT film!

Just to clarify:
When boom mikes are visible on the screen, it's not a "mistake" by the filmmakers. It's a screw-up by the projectionist. Virtually ALL movies are shot so that there's a little bit of the boom mike showing. This gives the projectionist a little leeway when framing the film. If it's correctly framed, you don't see the boom mikes.
But it's NOT a production error.

this is not because of the way the scenes were filmed but because the film is "out of frame" meaning the projectionist at the theater doesn't have his shit together and put the reel through in the wrong size plate.
So, I'm not sure who is actually writing these things but you may want to lay off the sauce. The posts have been gramatically incorrect lately and the spelling has been horrible. I saw the movie last night - there were no booms in the picture! The movie was great - very classic SATC.
It's because the movie is flat (not widescreen). If it's not framed just perfect boom mics and other things you're not supposed to see will show. ALL flat movies are like this. I know because I've been a projectionist for three years now.

The mics always appear on a film reel when it's sent to a theater. The projectionist then has to correctly center the film in order for the curtains to hide the top half of the film. They do this to ensure that as much of the "acting space" is seen in a movie and nothing is missed. It was the theaters fault for not centering their film correctly.

Roger Ebert's website has devoted effort to this problem. No matter what they tell you at the theatre or how they try to play it off and blame the film company or whatever, this is the PROJECTIONIST'S fault. The theatre should give you your money back for this goof. It is an in-house problem, no one else.
I've only had it happen once to me on IN THE CUT and I missed a better shot of mark ruffalo naked, so I asked for mine back.
