Sharon Stone is definitely feeling the backlash of her comments. And hard. And where it hurts her most.
Not her heart, but her bank account!
Upscale retailer Christian Dior has just pulled all of their advertisements featuring stone from China due to her remarks about the earthquake happening because of bad karma.
Stone had a modeling contract with Dior's cosmetics section, which was being displayed in China.
In a recent statement, Christian Dior China stated, "In light of the negative reaction that Sharon Stone's inappropriate remarks have triggered, Dior China has decided to immediately cancel and stop any advertisements, marketing campaigns and commercial activities associated with Sharon Stone. We don't agree with her hasty, unreflecting remarks and we deeply regret them. We just want our customers and fans to realize that her personal comments are not related to the company and of course we don't support any type of commentary that will hurt the feelings of our customers."
Major damage control!
It continues, "Dior was one of the first international brands to enter China and has won the affection and respect of the consuming public. We absolutely do not support any remark that hurts the Chinese people's feelings. We express our sorrow over the compatriots who lost their lives in the earthquake in Wenchuan, Sichuan, and we extend our sympathy and condolences to the people in the disaster area."
Stone has continued her apology campaign as well, being quoted by the Beijing News as saying, "In the course of the interview I made inappropriate remarks and for any harm created towards the Chinese people I am extremely sad and apologize."
A spokesman for China's Foreign Ministry, Qin Gang, said in a news conference, "We hope that as an American actress she can contribute to our two people's trust, understanding and friendship."
Maybe Stone should hire a bodyguard while she's helping out in China.

This is another example of a celebrity attempting to appear educated and sympathetic to global issues, but as soon as they open their trap, all we get is blah, blah, blah…even though I understand that she may have been directing her comment at the Chinese government and at the situations in Myanmar and Tibet, she clearly didn't exercise any thought before spitting it out…we must never connect a government to represent the opinions of all its people…clearly all Chinese citizens do not agree with the government's oppression of other nations…therefore, why should innocent people dying represent karma for the Chinese government??…if the government buildings fell, then maybe her comment has some relevance, but even so- I find it in the poorest taste to advocate and celebrate death for anyone…hasn't she ever heard of loving even those who hate us? Love is a much more powerful weapon…while the 1st Amendment gives us the right to speak our opinions, it does not protect the consequences of those opinions…so if she spits it out, then she must be willing to take the consequences for those words…if not, then she should just remain silent…

The Chinese government is awful! they force women to have late term abortions if the get pregnant a 2nd time, they imprison their journalists who dare speak on the injustices people suffer at the hands of the government. and that's just the beginning! Also, I've heard that the young Chinese population doesn't care much for politics and demanding more freedom. So of course they are not going to give 2 shits for the plight of the poor Tibetans! They are just too self absorbed, worrying about making money, wearing the latest trends, going out to clubs, and buying expensive clothes and handbags! what a shame! They can be the generation that demands more of their gov. and demands more freedom. Hopefully these recent events will change them. I read a recent article on TIME magazine where they report that thousands of chinese people skipped work just so they could help with the rescue efforts! Hopefully things will start to change in China.

Ummm, Actions have consequences, not opinions. The action of expressing an opinion may have consequences of people disagreeing with you and condemning you for your different viewpoint, but opinions in and of themselves do not bring consequences.

I completely support Sharon Stone's statement and her right to make it. It's called freedom of speech, something America seems to forget all the time. Punishment for making a statement is censorship, and China should be punished for that. What's appalling is all the business America does with China, essentially supporting their brutal communist regime. Their should be an embargo against trade with China, which has a far worse human rights record than Cuba. And to allow them to host the Olympics is a huge insult to mankind. Sharon is certainly free to express her opinions; hence, the freedom of speech. However, she also has to face the consequences of her speech, which is Dior dumping her in its advertisements in China. The first amendment freedom of speech only guarantees people the right to say what they want (for the most part) w/o facing government prosecution. However, the first amendment doesn't estop priviate entities like Dior (or CBS in the Imus incident, or other private individuals/entities in the Mel Gibson, Michael Richards, etc. tirades) from terminating contracts with these people to avoid negative publicity. In light of this, it's really the celebrity's choice and risk to voice certain views publically.

The Atlanta Falcons "released" Michael Vick after the dog fighting incident and almost no one was surprised. In this case, Dior obviously thought Sharon Stone's comment–and the negative reactions generated worldwide, not just limited to China–warrants her termination, at least in the ads in China. Don't forget, the purpose she was hired to do these particular ads was to sell Dior products in China. Dior's action is just good business sense.
