The New Hobbit Is…?

To all of you Lord of the Rings fans, reports are surfacing that the new prequel movie they are working on, The Hobbit, might have found its star.
Said to take the lead role of hobbit Bilbo Baggins is Scottish actor James McAvoy.
The J.R.R. Tolkien novel is hoping to be the next blockbuster big hit and will be directed by Guillermo del Toro.
The film is scheduled to begin filming later this year in New Zealand.
Also returning to the prequel will be Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf.
In regards to choosing the main lead, an inside source says, “A number of names have been doing the rounds, including Daniel Radcliffe and Jack Black, but James [McAvoy] is the one the film's bosses really want. They're expected to have talks soon so hopefully it could be confirmed in the not too distant future."
As for director del Toro, he adds, “I can tell you it's down to a few names that we all agree upon. For our first choice, completely magically we all have the same name."
We’d prefer to have seen Daniel Radcliffe, but we doubt they’d pay him as much as he’d probably ask for.

I love James McAvoy and I think he will be great in the role. I loved him in Atonement!!!! Although I like Danielle Radcliffe, I think James is a better choice for this role.
He resembles Andrew Mc Carthy.

OMG!!! i am not a fan of the fantasy movie, but if James McAvoy is going to be in it, i am there!!! He is fast becoming the best actor around. And for all you people that didn't see Atonement, look for Wanted in June. He is in the title role with Angelina Jolie. You will love him as i do.!!!!!!

Finally! Some good news for me today! James McAvoy is a PHENOMENAL actor and he will totally rock the part of Bilbo! Please say yes James! Love you!
Peter Jackson & Guillermo Del toro have WAY more scope in their choice of actors for the part. This is RUMOR. They are not going to pick Radcliffe, or James Macavoy. Remember when they cast Viggo Mortensen as Aragoon - he was a virtually unknown character actor at the time, the role made him a huge star, leading man. Daniel radcliffe is not a choice for Bilbo. Kames Macavoy - no way, he's already Tumnus in the Narnia films, (adirect competitor for LOTR/Hobbit) it won't be him for Bilbo.
James is the perfect choice. Mr McAvoy can do anything! I'd pay to see Mr McAvoy, I wouldn't pay to see Radcliffe.

He was brilliant in ATONEMENT his face changed with his emotions. It was like watching a dancer at times with so many closeups. That face will be perfect for The Hobbit character. And he's a great actor. Fabulous choice!

Though James is very talented and I agree that he is very well suited for the role I too would have liked to see what Daniel Radcliffe could have done. Not only does he look a bit like Elijah Woods who plays Frodo (who is Bilbo's nephew) which will make only the movie goers such as myself relate more to the plot, but I'd honestly like to see Daniel give it a try. James McAvoy has already been established as a great actor, while Daniel is just known as 'the Harry Potter kid'. Now, I'm a huge Harry Potter fan and I realize that Daniel isn't- isn't the best in those movies, he's a hell of a lot better then some of his co stars though, but having just seen My Boy Jack, I've realized that he does have some talent. A fair bit actually. Not only would this movie showcase different sides of Daniel's acting, but it would push him to become a better actor. Of course it is a risk to hire him, because he is very young and could very well be slammed by fans and critics alike. But if they were looking for a way to ensure it was going to be a BIG big hit (it'll be a hit anyway) who better to lure in audiences then our own Harry Potter? That's my two cents anyway. I think James is a very good actor certainly better then Daniel Radcliffe, and think that if the rumors are true then he'll do a very good job. I would have just liked to have seen what Daniel could have done.

I think he's an excellent choice. He is such an emotional and physical actor, he'll bring so much more to the role than any of the other contenders could have. He's a fantastic actor and I also think that aesthetically, he's the right choice as well. He has those perfect big expressive eyes and a kind, soft voice and of course he can pull off a variety of accents so I think he will really bring so much to the character and of course, the film proper.

common now, if you read/ seen LOTR you will know that Bilbo will look the same in the hobbit as he did in the fellowship since you age slowly when you have the one ring, plus yeah the race of hobbit bilbo is has no facial hair. so im gonna say all these people are fail and the best one would be jack black cause he does look more like a hobbit

He was good in THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND and ATONEMENT. He'll make a good hobbit. I cvan't wait to see it!

YES! I think he will be a WONDERFUL Bilbo! My friends and I have been discussing this for quite some time, who would do a good job of portraying Bilbo, and now that I see this, I wonder why I didn't think of James before! I'm very pleased with this.
There's no way I can see Daniel Radcliffe as a hobbit. It's not a role that fits him at all. And just a side note, from an avid Tolkien fan, Perez…hobbits don't have facial hair. ;P

Anne, don't worry, Peter Jackson is going to be the Executive Producer. He will still be involved. Believe me, I wouldn't go see the movie at all if Jackson weren't involved, and I highly doubt that McKellen would have returned for the role without Jackson on board for the production.
