Songstress and Marc Jacobs model M.I.A. was paid a pretty penny to perform at an MTV Movie Awards after-party on Sunday.
Tongues were wagging when she disclosed at the event how much she was paid to perform and what she plans to do with the money.
Mid-song, M.I.A. announced, “They’re giving me $100,000. Not bad, eh? I’m going to use it to build schools in Liberia. It costs $52,000 to build a school for 1,000.”
Building a school in Africa…she's just like Oprah and Madonna!

I don't believe that she will stick with such a plan. She seemed to suggest the idea as if all she has to do is write a check and see the finished building, forgetting that upkeep, staff and faculty for such a school needs to be maintained for as long as the school is up and running. This is a lifelong commitment and her words don't inspire confidence that she understands this. True philanthropists like Cat Power actually travelled to India herself and built pipes to bring in fresh water and provided and installed plumbing to augment efficient handling of wastewater for rural and overtaxed urban populations, with her own money. Or take a page from the book of Roger Federer in South Africa and start her own high profile foundation and employ people who know how this is done and how to keep it going so that it really makes a difference. And really, if she was serious, she wouldn't need a paycheck from MTV to make it happen. She could finance it from her own coffers without MTV's help. Until it happens, this is just another empty promise by a celebrity to exploit philanthropy for good press.
ALL of this aside, this comment is completely uncalled for. I don't see what Hinduism has to do with anything. I don't know if she's Hindu, but that is no reason for such an outburst. If she was Hindu, how is that a blight on her character?
Celebrities shoudl follow suit.
