I think that the difference is that straight women are not intimidated or threatened by lesbians, while many straight men feel that their sexuality is somehow compromised or threatened by gay men…which is why we treat the two differently. Is it right, no, but it's how things are right now

I don't know why the media freaks out over "outing" someone…maybe because they didn't break it first? Maybe they don't have 'gaydar' like you do? Or, maybe because the President didn't okay it…hmmm. Things are achangin', slowly but surely. You know it, I know it (I've known for awhile because gay marriage has been legal in Canada for such a long time.) First of all, I don't see anything wrong with you reporting on homosexual/bisexual celebrities on your site. It's different if it was a friend of yours who came out to only you and you abused their trust, but you don't do that; like you said, it's reporting.
HOWEVER: You're almost hinting at levels of homophobia towards lesbians with this whole Lindsay/Samantha thing. You talk so much shit about their relationship, it's kind of sad. I'm no Lindsay Lohan fan, but pick on her/DJ Samantha Ronson for things other than the sexuality aspect, please, please, please. I think the whole Lo-Man outing by the mainstream media is a little bit of both of the things you talked about. On the good side, I think society has made some progress, even in the past year or two, on treating gay people as equal. I think it's starting to become not as taboo of an issue as it was in the past. Unfortunately, I think the Lo-Man case has more to do with the double standard of lesbians vs. male homosexuals. It's almost considered chic in a way, and woman are given all more room for "experimentation." Since Lindsay is a "lipstick lesbian" is even more excepted, and she is seen as bisexual. But if the sexes were reversed, the guy would just be gay. There's not as much leigh way for guys. A prime example of this double standard is Tila Tequila. Do you think people would be as accepting if it was a guy getting it on with both guys and girls…probably not. Sad, but true….one other thing, I don't think society is as open to butch lesbians. They don't get the same treatment as the more fem-lesbians. You're several postings of "The Hobbit" today are an example of that…

What I think about the entire issue is that they're always 'outing' heterosexual couples… like when they think two celebs are dating its all over the papers whether its true or not… so why can't it be the other way around? If people are happy dating whomever they're dating, regardless of sex, then it should be celebrated

I think you're right. It's a double standard. I also think Lohan is exploiting the double standard as a cheap publicity stunt. If this was a guy and her relationship (be it platonic or otherwise) was garnering so much media attention, she'd have released a statement defining it.
What else could she have done to get this kind of coverage? NADA. And she knew the public would be more accepting of a girl experimenting than a guy coming out.
And she won't say a word so we keep on speculating. Although, if the terms of the contract were right (namely a reputable publication, control to say "her story", and a 7 figure paycheck), I wouldn't put it past her.
I think men celebs don't come out because they think the public will be less accepting of them in hetero roles. And unfortch, many people in this country still attach a stigma to the gay community, so I can see why male actors feel this way. But I think "outing" kind of says, listen, if you're half as talented as you think you are, prove it.
Drama and music are fine arts. It shouldn't be surprising that there are so many homos in the biz. IF they all banned together and took advantage of the new media, they could turn around America's perception of what it is to be gay. And in 20 years, my kids won't believe me when I say I remember a time when gay people couldn't get married.
