"Tough thing about Broadway is eight shows a week. It's slavery. That needs to be adjusted. It's wrong. Actors work three years straight sometimes with one day off. This exhaustion puts you into depression. Like today [Wednesday] it's two shows. I have to put makeup on, take makeup off. Not like in movies with whole departments to fluff and puff you. In between performances, I have to study with my son, who's taking Bible and guitar. And we're filming this play for the archives. Come 7:30, I have to take another look at the script, get into the mind-set again, then sign autographs, pose for photos with fans and thank them for their attention and for coming. Monday, your one day off, you have to cram in all your meetings and appointments and the rest of your whole life, and hope you can survive on Benadryl. I love what I'm doing. No cameraman's saying, 'Stand here . . . look there.' It's not all done in five-minute takes. Your work has to be inside you. You push beyond your comfort zone. Broadway is an actor's revenge. I couldn't do Broadway again if it's more than five a week. I'd just say no. N-O. Not doing it. I'm not saying it has to be my way. I'm saying they can get somebody else. I always listen. If your point is right, then I will make adjustments. It's not arrogance. It's just that I have to live with me the rest of my life."

Sounds very hard, almost like running into a burning building to save an elderly resident, or being an ER nurse trying to hold down a shooting victim who is trying to punch you, or being the only cop in a car that just stopped a drunk driver who ends up having two friends and a gun, or being a roofer in the summer, or pouring concrete anytime, or working in a pediatric neuro-oncology department and watching little babies suffer and die. Sure glad I don't have to do such a hard job as he has. I hope he is well compensated, just like his children's teachers and the police keeping him safe and the fire department saving his life. THIS is why screen actors shouldn't be on the stage! Julia Roberts was HUMBLE when she realized the stage was difficult; he and Fantasia (who took well over 56 days off!) are complaining, annoying, and HE isn't even good in the role! I was terribly disappointed with his acting: he's lazy, missed his beat, devoid of any real emotion, and arrogant when he comes out for autographs. Considering that there are any number of (Black) actors who would KILL for this role, and to play opposite the best of the best in Black Broadway, he needs to either resign from the role, or shut the hell up!

Hey IDIOT, it's called the real world and work. I would love to be able to live your life and make your money and have any weekday off to take care of appointments (since everything seems to be closed on weekends or closed by 5:00 when I get off).
If you don't like it, your right don't do it. You figure that for the 8 shows a week he puts in it probably averages out to less than the full work week the rest of us put in and I have no sympathy for this spoiled brat. Afterall, he gets to study Bible and Guitar with his kid during the day. How many of us don't get to attend our kids study or practice, or sporting events because we have to work.
I would challenge all of these whiny, spoiled brats to spend 6 months doing what the rest of us do (I'd say three, but the first 3 months on most jobs is really considered learning the job). None of them would last that long without calling in sick every other day. Boo Hoo, I can't go out and party till 3 in the morning everyday. Boo Hoo, I don't have a staff to get me ready for work. Boo Hoo I have to show up to work everyday.

Saw him in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof - amazing actor, he sets the standard quite high. Totally draining role (I've done the play as "Maggie") and those three hours on stage, plus hours of prep, leave you exhausted. Doesn't sound like he's complaining - sounds like he's stating the facts, and as he states them, it is the truth. Most actors don't do Broadway because it is just that grueling.

When Fantasia was performing in the Color Purple it totally exhausted her. Broadway is something that you really have to be trained for. Its easier to go from Broadway to movies rather than movies to Broadway.

We're all entitled to change our minds, change our opinions, change our preferences. But he won't give up or quit because made a committment.
