Quote of the Day

Filed under: Icky Icky Poo > Quote of the Day > Broadway Babies > Terrence Howard

terrence_howard_25872t.jpg

"Tough thing about Broadway is eight shows a week. It's slavery. That needs to be adjusted. It's wrong. Actors work three years straight sometimes with one day off. This exhaustion puts you into depression. Like today [Wednesday] it's two shows. I have to put makeup on, take makeup off. Not like in movies with whole departments to fluff and puff you. In between performances, I have to study with my son, who's taking Bible and guitar. And we're filming this play for the archives. Come 7:30, I have to take another look at the script, get into the mind-set again, then sign autographs, pose for photos with fans and thank them for their attention and for coming. Monday, your one day off, you have to cram in all your meetings and appointments and the rest of your whole life, and hope you can survive on Benadryl. I love what I'm doing. No cameraman's saying, 'Stand here . . . look there.' It's not all done in five-minute takes. Your work has to be inside you. You push beyond your comfort zone. Broadway is an actor's revenge. I couldn't do Broadway again if it's more than five a week. I'd just say no. N-O. Not doing it. I'm not saying it has to be my way. I'm saying they can get somebody else. I always listen. If your point is right, then I will make adjustments. It's not arrogance. It's just that I have to live with me the rest of my life."

- Idiot Terrence Howard, currently starring on Broadway in Cat on a Hot Tin Rood

Obviously he doesn't desreve to have the honor of performing on broadway…the place where "real" actors strive to perform at least once in their career.

    203

As a theater actress his comments piss me off. It's like if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen! So many people would kill to be doing 8 shows a week on Broadway and he's complaining about everything that makes broadway, well, broadway. Theater is a challenge, you have to push yourself.
He should go back to doing movies or do more flexable theater in LA.

What a B*tch this guys! I'd have never thought he'd turn out to be a whiner and crier! This guy's whining about his schedule on broadway! that's how most regular people live their lives, wake up in the morning dash to get out of the door, take their kids to school. then off to work, go shop for dinner cook it, housework/homework and do it all over again the next day. maybe if you're lucky find time for something fun.The only difference is, OL' BOY gets paid a whole hell of a lot more than regular folks do. So, I feel no compassion for this guy whatsoever. I'm sure there actors that would give anything to have his job on broadway and NOT COMPLAIN and WHINE and CRY about it… BOO HOO!!! : (

  5. Whit says – reply to this

    205

Believe me, he won't have to worry about getting asked to do more theater, he's dreadful in Cat On a Hot Tin Roof. I've never heard any theater person complain (Patti LuPone does Mama Rose 8 times a week and she's almost 60 and says she loves it). He's a total diva, and knows for a fact that without the Hollywood fluff, he's no "actor."

    206

Give him a break. I think we should support all people who want to find a balance between their professional lives and personal lives. A successful Broadway show can run for years, taking a huge toll on a personal life. I respet him for wanting to have professional success and personal happiness–such as quality time with his son.

I've always had a lot of respect for Terrance Howard until this comment was posted! It sounds to me like he has a JOB!! Wake-up Terrance… this is what the rest of us face everyday and most of us keep up this pace until we retire at the age of 70! Quit crying and feel blessed that at least you make above minimum wage!!! I wish I was walking in your footsteps right now… I'm so over you!

    What an ASS!

I'm sure all the people working 2 full time jobs w/ 3 kids feel really bad for you.

I have a glass of STFU for you!

  9. Hyde says – reply to this

    209

Suck it up, you big baby. How many actors would give anything to be where you are?? Why did you take the job in the first place? What a whiny jerk. I'll bet the rest of the cast can't stand him.

  10. Cashto says – reply to this

    210

I love TH's work but comparing being in a play to slavery is bad. There are a million actors who would trade places with him in a second. It's grueling work for sure but to be a full-time, working, well-paid actor is a dream that won't come true for a lot of people. For him to complain about it publicly is disappointing. I hope he was tired when he said this and wasn't thinking..

    Re: classy

Right. People thing Broadway is only performing for 2 hours on stage and that's it. But there's so much preparation before they even get on the stage: makeup, costumes, rehearsal, etc. The call are at least 3 hours prior to showtime. And after the show there's all that time getting out of costume, taking off the makeup, etc. and then go outside and sign autographs and meet fans for at least 30 minutes. And if you don't sign autographs you're called an a**hole. So for all you people bitching about him bitching about a "2 hour job," there's a lot more to it that you don't know and aren't taking into consideration.

How TYPICAL that this TALENTLESS TOOL can't! Many actors would kill for the opportunities that Mr. Howard has. As an actor, I get sick of hearing big stars saying "Eight shows a week kill me!" It's heaven for an actor to work like that. He's just spoiled.

I dont get it… you come on this site to read about celebrities. You hate when they lie and hide.. this dude is speaking out and being honest about a feeling he has about a contract he signed for a broadway show! that's it! he's still doing the work! IF ANYTHING.. we can all appreciate how hard these actors work instead of thinking its all glory! Just read the thought he had on the topic and you guys stop editorializing about how he doesn't appreciate his work he's not saying that, in fact he's stops and says he loves what he's doing! Don't ignore that because shitting on him is more fun! he loves it but, its hard work and he doesn't think he'll do a broadway show again..

He is absolutely right….unfortunately for readers who have not worked in NYC in the entertainment industry, he may sound like an idiot. However an artist always needs space and time to recharge their batteries. When you play or sing the same thing for 8 straight times a week, it becomes difficult to express your artistry as what you do is no longer a performance but a job….keep your sparkle…be a father…and pay your rent…sorry folks, but a shoebox apt in NYC is about $2,000 a month.

Give me a break TH. I am an actress/dancer in NY trying to pursue Broadway- and there are so many of us that would take your place if its just too much. Seems to me that Broadway actors should be getting the salary that TH gets for his films- considering how grueling it is. For those of you that don't work in the biz- 8 shows a week is tiring. And the makeup comment- its only annoying if you have to reaply specialty makeup- ie. Cats. He's just not used to the gypsy lifestyle where people don't cater to your every move. Showbiz is hard work. More than any of you will ever even know.

  66. Trini says – reply to this

    266

I think he's right. Maybe for younger actors broadway with the schedule it currently has its fine. But when you have a family and what not, its not fair to them to only have you one day a week. You need time for yourself as well. Could anyone imagine working years like that? its crazy. Finally an actor who's more concerned with his family then money.

  67. b24 says – reply to this

    267

He's absolutely right. I have so many friends who have done productions like Mama Mia! and The Lion King, and they have mandatory rehearsals written into the contracts. When you do musicals it takes such a toll on the body and voice, and you have no life for up to 18 month stretches…it breeds a lot of neurosis and depression in the theatre world. But the investors are looking to meet the bottom line(and then some) so it's definitely no rest for the weary. You basically have to be a masochist to get through that process. It still doesn't excuse, for example, people like Fantasia Barrino that f*** up opportunities basically handed to them on a plate like "the Color Purple". SO many people killing themselves on the theatre grind, and that heffa was showing up to work the way a 12th grader does gym class in the last 2 weeks of school. She pissed ALOT of people off with her actions. To his credit, at least Terrance is just whining, and he is still actually on stage every night without fail.

Re: Trini – Not 6 days a week- 8 shows. Not 6 full days, theres a big difference. My husbands working in the West End in London right now as an actor so I know exactly what it entails. He has to be in the theatre ONE HOUR before the show starts. This is pretty much standard- once the show opens there are no day time rehersals. He does about 17/18 hrs a week. He has every day free- except Saturday and Wednesday and he is home by 11pm . And he doesn't have the luxuries that Terrence has- which I bet include a driver, a comfy dressing room etc. Its not a hard life. Besides the kudos, theres invites to parties and exclusive clubs . Most of your time is free. Honestly, You probably have less time with your family than he does!!

  72. jt says – reply to this

    272

well there you have it people - the difference between a movie star, who sits his overpriced ass in a block-long trailer waiting, eating, getting massages and snoozing in-between his few minutes on set - and a REAL actor. I saw his shitty show and he sucked. he's not even on stage saying much for most of it. I've been a casting director, agent and manager of actors for over two decades and he just reminded me of why I stay in NYC where real talent comes to ply their trade on stage. yes, it's hard work, but if you DON'T love telling a story and inhabiting characters completely to the core and without the benefit of a performance mostly created in the editing room, then stay the fuck away. Theater ain't for pampered pussies, which is what makes it such an amazing medium. To compare it to slavery is just absurd. I hope Patti Lupone goes across the street to where "Cat" is playing and hurls a good lugie at your spoiled, pretty face!

    294

Boo Hoo for him. He was to work two shows a day AND put on his own make up! WOW! What a hardlife for him. I must have it easy wokring at Wal-Mart 8-9 hours a day on my feet, for 9.25 and hour. Awe he has to study with his soon, well I must have it easy since the only way I see my 5yr old daughter is when it's 10 at night and she's already asleep, then I see for an hour when I drive to school.Yet another spoiled actor who doesn't appreciate the blessings he has becasue all he is doing is complaing that he has two long hours. WOW try being pleasent to unappreacitive customers 9 hours a day, Because the 9.25 an hour I make and the fact the my daughters life is passing me by is not at all hard on my mind body soul and it breaks my heart when my daughter wishes I could spend more time with her. How I wish I could take her to work with me, How I wish I made enough money to say working this hard is worth it because it is supporting my family, because right now I'm struggling to survive on the $500 I make every two weeks. WOW! POOR Terrance Howard.

Broadway can be a difficult but rewarding and amazing experience. Think of more of the positives instead of complaining about the negatives.

  97. ChrisM says – reply to this

    297

Wow, there are a lot of ignorant people here. I'm sorry! I have to say it. You guys know nothing of a grueling schedule in show business especially live performances. He doesn't just work for a few hours and that's it. There are rehearsals before shows, there are meetings as to what the actors need to do. There is sound check. Yes, he has to put his own damn make up and make sure it is top notch for a show. He has to greet his fans that come to see him. He has to do all of that. It's way more than 3 hours it's more like 12 because sometimes he has 2 shows in the same day along with preparation. You guys are way too hard and know ZIP about live performance. Heck, I work for a DJ on the weekends and our asses are TIRED coming from a party. You just don't know.

all black people do is complain. its called PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. That's how Obama won - - - people felt bad for him and his sad story. It had nothing to do with whether he is QUALIFIED…people were just caught up in the "give the black man a chance" concept. EUGH!

I dunno, I don't think he deserves all the bashing he got for this comment. Just because some people have it worse "working 12 hours a day in the sun" doesn't mean that 3 years without a day off isn't awful. Of course there are some unemployed actors who would "die to be in his position." That doesn't mean he's stupid for realizing that a long career on Broadway isn't for him. Lastly, the racist comments on this post are ridiculous and disgusting. get a life.
