Quote of the Day

Filed under: Icky Icky Poo > Quote of the Day > Broadway Babies > Terrence Howard

terrence_howard_25872t.jpg

"Tough thing about Broadway is eight shows a week. It's slavery. That needs to be adjusted. It's wrong. Actors work three years straight sometimes with one day off. This exhaustion puts you into depression. Like today [Wednesday] it's two shows. I have to put makeup on, take makeup off. Not like in movies with whole departments to fluff and puff you. In between performances, I have to study with my son, who's taking Bible and guitar. And we're filming this play for the archives. Come 7:30, I have to take another look at the script, get into the mind-set again, then sign autographs, pose for photos with fans and thank them for their attention and for coming. Monday, your one day off, you have to cram in all your meetings and appointments and the rest of your whole life, and hope you can survive on Benadryl. I love what I'm doing. No cameraman's saying, 'Stand here . . . look there.' It's not all done in five-minute takes. Your work has to be inside you. You push beyond your comfort zone. Broadway is an actor's revenge. I couldn't do Broadway again if it's more than five a week. I'd just say no. N-O. Not doing it. I'm not saying it has to be my way. I'm saying they can get somebody else. I always listen. If your point is right, then I will make adjustments. It's not arrogance. It's just that I have to live with me the rest of my life."

- Idiot Terrence Howard, currently starring on Broadway in Cat on a Hot Tin Rood

If Tennessee Williams knew that a black Jehovah's Witness was playing Brick in his play—he would be spinning in his grave.

How exactly is he an idiot when he clearly has looked at both sides and made his point as modestly as possible? He does say it's fantastic, but he also says it's not for his lifestyle with his family. They shouldn't have 8 shows a week unless doube-cast. It is simple Perez(or whichever one of you writes this now still claiming to be Perez, but pluralizing the noun. By the way, that's kind of ridiculous, be yourselves. I don't think anyone will mind). Nobody wrote an artical calling you an idiot when Perez whined about getting up early or not being able to eat a cupcake. I guess it's stupid to complain about someone writing for a gossip blog, but seriously think next time.

  4. 304

I can understand someone not wanting to do broadway. Eight shows a week is grueling, but Terrence knew that ahead of time. There's no broadway that's only five days a week, and he knew what he was in for. He should have thought long and hard about his decision and said no.

  5. 305

Re: Paul – youre an ignorant, disgusting waste of perfectly good oxygen. go suck a dick you racist fucking piece of shit. i hope obama wins and fucking exiles your pathetic, retarded ass.

I worked with Terrence in a film before he made it big and he's a great guy and hardworking very talented actor.

I've also done a B-Way show for 2 years over 800 times and it is incredibly grueling and draining. But worth it.

Usually stars never commit to more than 6 months because they know this. Every real actor should do a B-Way show in their lifetime.

You have to consider that he said this on a Wed which is a matinee day and those are the worst. You do a show at 3 and get done at 5.30, then have to start all over again at 7.30. He may have made a different statement on a Sunday.

A seasoned theater actress I worked with taught me how crucial it is to take a 1 hour nap in your dressing room in between those shows. Then the second show sort of feels like a new day and it's not so bad. but if Terrance is spending time with his kids on his break he is not able to do that and that is his choice.

The immediacy of the live audience really does make it bearable.

Also Brick is a pretty emotionally demanding role and Terrence is not the type of actor who would EVER phone anything in.

The legendary Italian actress Eleanora Duse said any more than six shows a week is barbaric. But those two extra shows are important for the producers due to the economic situation of New York City.

But Terrence does have a habit of being remarkably candid.

with Big SACRIFICES come Big REWARDS…..

so if 8 shows a week is what you have to do to earn all that Dough and exposure that actors get then be it!!!

if you want to make millions, its not due to your pretty face…you need to earn it and for most actors it takes blood, sweat and tears… and I guess they do require a lot from you for that pay…

if you can't commit to that amount of work to recieve millions.. maybe you should go work at the gap or something and go on a $7 per hour salary… see how u gonna like that….

THOUGH MANY ACTORS WOULD DREAM TO BE IN HIS POSITION, HE (LIKE ANY ACTOR) IS FREE TO EXPRESS WHICH MEDIUM HE FEELS MOST COMFORTABLE WORKING IN.

A LOT OF ACTORS COULD NEVER DO A SOAP, THEY JUST DON'T HAVE THE SPEED AND STAMINA FOR THAT PARTICULAR MEDIUM, EVEN THOUGH IT IS AN OFTEN MALIGNED INDUSTRY.

WE LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE MOST OF OUR TV/MOVIE STARS ARE NOTHING MORE THAN SPOILED MODELS WHO HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO CRAFT AND ARE HANDED THE WORLD TO THEM ON SILVER PLATTERS.

LET'S NOT HATE ON AN ACTOR WHO IS GETTING MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY TAXED FOR WORKING HARD TO BE A GOOD ACTOR. ALL HE'S SAYING IS THAT THIS BROADWAY SCHEDULE IS NOT FOR HIM.

Re: Rent214 – So, number 307,….is that what it will be….when Obama wins, he'll exile all the "undesirables" and ones who disagree with the new afro-centric world view?….Those are the hopes, down deep inside…..???
So it IS as I suspected.
It won't take long for us to see racism like the world has never seen before, once Obama is elected, whites will have 400 years of restitution to answer to.
Thank you for proving my point.
The deep seated, mostly quiet, sometimes loud, vocal, secret, hidden, simmering, and violent resentment—dormant now—is precisely why it is not yet time for a black president.
The powder-keg of black resentment will have to be diffused over time. Not ignited in a single explosion in 2009.

..yeah..day in and day out for the past 20 years, I get up before 6am, work by 7, home by 5. Gotta spend time with the family, pay the bills, mow the lawn, ..god it's tough. Hey Terrance…cry me a river. If you're depressed…I respect that…but many of us out there. Imagine how depressed you would be if you had to get a real job. Do your play. And leave when you are ready. Come back and do one…set a time limit on how long you want to do the play. Then you can take a one year break until your next gig. Wish I had the same opportunity. OMG…I can't stand listening to this crap…

NOTE : Terrence Howard was out from April 15th to May 22th and returned on May 23rd. He is also not performing June 5th thru 10th. Subbing in for him was, and is, Boris Kodjoe.
Tough schedule Terrence. Fourteen days off in less than two months.

Maybe you're a little tired btu so many people would kill to be where you are! And you think 8 shows a a week is a lot? Seriously in this economy man he's lucky to be employed, esp as an actor. Most of us actors work our asses off for little or no pay because its what we love. You don't love it you don't deserve to be there. 322

He's right. The work schedule demanded of broadway actors is severe and unhealthy. Yes many people dream of being on broadway and would do anything to get there, but they should still have rights and a reasonable workload. obviously the people who don't get it are not performers (or if they are they suck so bad that they've never had the chance to do any work) because otherwise they would know how much energy and soul it takes to put on a good show and that to be expected to do that nonstop with barely any breaks for years on end is ridiculous and cruel!

  23. Vanity says – reply to this

    323

If he hates it so much, give the role to someone who wants it. There are thousands of us slaving away at Conservatories both here and over in the UK training for that one day that we MIGHT get a role on Broadway. Any producer would be hard pressed to find an actor who wouldn't take the role of Brick.

Screw working every night of the week, we do that anyway. We all know that being a real actor means giving up your family, your social life and we don't have an issue with that. We choose this life, we know what we are getting into.

Get over yourself Howard, most of us would kill to be in your place.

Re: tectustaceoRe: Jennif – Jennifer, number 326, if you're going to boycott his shows, you are going to have a difficult time. According to www dot broadway dot com, he is rarely there.
This makes me look up to James Earl Jones even more. I had always known that he had overcome stuttering, but Wikipedia says JEJ first played Othello on the stage in 1955 (not Broadway). That puts him on the stage for 53 years now. Working on the stage longer than Terrence Howard is old.

Wow! Poor baby. I feel oh so sorry for him that he doesn't have people to fluff his ass every second of the day. Perhaps if he had a better work ethic and just a touch more talent, Broadway would not put him out so much. Acting on stage is hard, but for people such as myself when you love it, you have NO complaints. Get over yourself Terrence and get your whiney self back to Hollywood. Broadway can replace you in an instant with someone who actually loves their craft.

Give me a break. Someone tells you about the conditions they work under to create magic on Broadway and they are labeled as whiney or complaining. Most of use complain about having to work 40 hours/ 5 days a week. He's talking about working 6 days a week with shows totaling 8 performances. Say what you want, I give him credit for making the effort and recognizing that this is not a life he could do for his entire career.

    349

Yeah, it's live theatre, retard. Jesus, as a theatre major and a student of acting, nothing offends me more than flash-in-the-pan Hollywood stars who try to "legitimize" themselves by treading the boards on the Great White Way. GET OVER YOURSELF, TERRENCE HOWARD! Do you think other theatre actors have a shit-ton of meetings on their only day off? NO. Don't you think that actors who build their lives in the grind of an 8-show-a-week performance schedule have the discipline to know how to fucking pace themselves? It's not slavery: IT'S A JOB. And they all know that they're lucky to have employment. Anyway, thanks, Perez, for bring this to my attention: I knew I was over him when I read that he dumps women on the second date if they haven't started wiping with baby-whipes LIKE HE TELLS THEM TO. Douche bag.

Stop the infestatioN!

You work 3 hours a day except for the 2 dual performance days. Wah. Get a life. Go back to Hollywood and leave Broadway for the REAL artists and actors. I can't believe the union wasted an Equity card on this MORON. *SIGH*

But somtimes its kinda tough wiping blood off!!! Sometimes your buddies. Some how Broadway is not looking that bad. Chin up you time will be over in broadway soon. I love your work. Smooches!!!! Re: Paul – and anybody else talking about Obama

Ok, way off subject, so I'm sorry, but I gotta say, am I the ONLY PERSON IN THE UNITED STATES that realizes Obama is black and WHITE. His father was African, which means technically, he's not really descended from "African Americans" ie, those who were over here since slavery times.

Secondly, he was raised by his white family so I'm thinking, if you're the type of person who likes to generalize or stereotype, he was not raised "black" (if there is such a thing as being "raised black" or white or whatever), he was surrounded by white people growing up…

Why does no one else talk about this? Obama ain't a black man, he's a mixed man and that's one of the reasons he's such a great representation of America…
