Keira Knightley is in talks to play Eliza Doolittle in the re-make of stage to film classic My Fair Lady.
The studio, Columbia, declined to comment on casting of the project, being produced by Duncan Kenworthy (Love Actually, Notting Hill..fab flicks!) and theater legend Cameron Mackintosh.
According to reports, while it's being called an update, the film will use the original score and retain its 1912 setting.
Where possible, Kenworthy and Mackintosh intend to shoot the film on location in the original London settings of Covent Garden, Drury Lane, Tottenham Court Road, Wimpole Street and the Ascot racecourse.

KEIRA KNIGHTLEY as Elize Doolitle (the best choice, already acclaimed actress and decent box office-draw)
HUGH LAURIE as Doctor Higgins (are you bloody kidding ? if he does Higgind, the 15 million viewers of House will be there to see it on the opening weekend)
STEPHEN FRY as Pickering (reteaming with Laurie, they could be an insanely great duo)
JULIE ANDREWS as Mrs. Higgins (a great cameo performance so the could get to the old fans, too)
HUGH DANCY as Freddie Eynsford-Hill (Ella Enchanted-type of character, he could do it in his sleep)
JULIET STEVENSON as Mrs. Pearce (watch her performance in Being Julia, and you'll know what I am talking about)
P.S. Perez, stop hating Keira ! Since you can't show us ONE good reason, you should just stop it ! Oh, I know. Maybe if she were an alcoholic-droguser-with three DUI, you could finally love her - and make some money out of her. Who are they going to get to sing for her? I agree she looks the part, but 80% of that role is the music and the emotion brought to it. They told Julie Andrews she wasn't pretty enough to do the film (after she had originated the role on broadway) cast Audrey Hepburn (absolutely nothing against her!) and then had Marnie Nixon (who no one knows who she is, but she was the voice of My Fair Lady, The King and I, and West Side Story) do the vocals. Besides, who on earth will play Henry Higgins?
Kate Winslet, Anne Hathaway, Winona Rider, or Anna Paquin and Natalie Portman are my picks, Overall, Hathaway would be the best choice, IMHO

I don't think Keira Knightley has anywhere near enough charm to carry this part off. That's the problem with actresses (and actors) these days. It's all about who's thinnest, who's prettiest, who's the most pushiest. Hardly anyone with any true charisma or talent ever get through. It's a shame.
Anyway I think Martine McCutcheon should do the role, she got rave reviews when she did the part in the theatre.

Ehm, I don't see the big problem here.
Hepburn herself was voiced over, because she did not have the pipes to sing the part - in fact, the studio didn't even bother telling her that they had substituted her voice with another vocalist until the middle of filming.
I think they'll do a different angle on this production of My Fair Lady. And Keira is a pretty good actress aside from all the people that hate her on this board.

First of all, Audrey Hepburn did not sing her songs in My Fair Lady, they were sang by a woman named Marni Nixon. Hepburn got the part because she was a FABULOUS actress and had more star power than the other choice, fresh off Broadway Ms. Julie Andrews. Producers thought Andrews did not have the clought to carry the movie and so cast Hepburn instead.
As for Keira Knightly, I like her just fine, but no way can she carry the part of Elize Dolittle, there just isn't a chance. Hopefully this is just a bad Hollywood rumour.
They shouldn't be remaking the movie anyways…..leave well enough alone.
They would be better off to get an unknown who really fit the part and shone in it than relying on Knightly's already stable fanbase, and butchering a classic.
Lastly, she can't sing…."I Could Have Danced All Night" HELLOOOOO??!! Not an easy song…she can't do it. And she already said that she didn't enjoy her experience singing in her last movie and that she would never do it again.

It was a huge scandal at the time - the choice of Hepburn over Julie Andrews - many industry insiders were outraged at the huge insult to Andrews (who starred in MFL in London.) Another scandal this time over the casting wouldn't be that big a deal.

I actually don't think Keira would be that horrible. I can see her with the Eliza cockney accent that would transform into a more polished one. Eliza doesn't really have to have a knockout voice (as shown by Audrey Hepburn). She just has to have the ability to be able to transition well.
