Wow…that's big…we had one here in Chicago–pretty good for finding imports, singles, etc.–that closed up shop in the past year or so. So sad. So sad for the music industry, as a whole. :(

IT NOTS ABOUT A DECLINE IN CD SALES, IT ABOUT HIGHER RENT THAT VIRGIN MEGASTORE HAS TO PAY. instead of 50 dollars a square metre, 750.

In the UK all the Virgin megastores have been taken over and are now called Zavii, and are much improved pricewise on Virgin megastore.

    114

Virgin lost their best, and only, money maker (Janet Jackson). they haven't had any hit artists since, so it was only a matter of time. plus, has anyone seen how much they charge for CD's??? they should have BEEN shut down!!

  15. whoria says – reply to this

    115

with a poster of whoriah scarey in the front of the store, who would want to shop there?

  16. employ says – reply to this

    116

For everyone who is happy, just know there are 100's of people losing their jobs. We dont make the prices, but the labels and artist who get paid millions of dollars help create this insane market. It's sad to know you won't be able to go into a store and look around for old CDs, so enjoy going to your amazon.com and also Itunes, but let's see if you can find everything you want.

the one in miami closed about a year ago.

    there's still nothing in there.

i think that the one in disney world is still there. it'll probabbly be there a while cause disney usually has places that have gone out of business in most other cities.

  23. anthon says – reply to this

    123

aw! sad day :( the one in chicago closed a while ago too :( i heard rent there was something like 1 million a month or something but still expensive!

  24. Shawn says – reply to this

    124

Awww that's really sad! I'm glad I'm going to New York City in 2 weeks I will at least get to go in and look around before it closes…..i wonder if it actually has to do with poor cd sales? If they would sell all albums at $9.99 I would buy more rather than on i-tunes. But as posted before…..i-tunes song's are not as loud as a cd. Hmm…Sam The Records Man closed here in Canada and all the Music World's a few months ago……what's going on!!? We only have HMV now…..

  25. jenbun says – reply to this

    125

nnnoooooooooo!!! ever since that place opened, i've bought all of cds and dvds there except for some special orders like stuff that was never offered here. that blows, it was the best thing to do in times square, now i've lost my favorite music store and reason to be in that neighborhood. what are people supposed to do, hang out in the toys'r'us store? it'll probably become a topshop or a bank or some such crap. you could go in there and find any album or movie instantly. so sad.

  26. 126

Not sad. They should have gotten on the mp3 train long ago instead of trying to fight it.

They should have also been fighting the high prices of CDs that was supposed to drop but never did.

This is just karma taking it's toll.

  27. 127

Re: alex THE INTERNET GENERATION IS SCREWED. – '
    It's called BACKUPS tardo.

Having a DVD full of music is the same as having a CD full of music. Think before you post.

  28. 128

    Re: Lisa

Don't blame your lack of knowledge about PCs or mp3s on the format. I have mp3s I've made or gotten since 1998. Yes, that's 10 whole years. I don't think I've even had a CD last that long without getting a skip in it.

    Enough of the FUD.

  29. 129

Re: linds people need to quit downloading music on their computers and go out and buy an actual, physical cd…too bad we're all lazy – Nothing to do with being lazy. People don't want robbed every time they buy music anymore. The people have spoken.

why???????? is the best store ever.. soo cool… i love this store! now i'm sad :(

  31. george says – reply to this

    131

Someone here said it's ONLY the rent that's behind the closure of this iconic store, but it's not.

Whilst high rent contributes to the failure of the store, music piracy is the ultimate problem. Software like iTunes and LEGAL downloading also contribute to it, but WOULDN'T affect it so much if people didn't obtain their music via LimeWire, WinMx etc.

Also, to whoever said Virgin don't have any good signed bands since Janet Jackson, I'd love to see/hear your basis for that theory. Also, Virgin Entertainment and Virgin [retail] and Virgin Atlantic et al are under the same banner, yes - but not run as one company and correct me if I'm wrong, Virgin is in cahoots with EMI, so if your theory is correct, blame EMI - not Richard Branson.

  32. 132

iTunes hurting Virgin records is just Virgin records not moving with the trend. Had they came out with something like iTunes with the SAME BUSINESS plan as Apple's (It was their business plan that made the the top) they wouldn't have had the problems they did. But no, they, and other BIG BUSINESS record industries wanted to keep things the way they were.

When CDs and CD players first came out they were expensive. The recording companies said that price on both would go down a bunch after such R&D costs were met. Well the price of CD players DID go down. A bunch. But the price of the CD stayed the same extreme rate. (You could buy a tape of a band for $7.99 and it costs them more to make tapes than it did CDs) People complained for years but there was nothing they could do about it.

In comes the computer age. People that were tired of getting ROBBED by the RIAA and their business partners pretty much said FU and boycotted these places and got their music elsewhere. Illegal or legal.

They are to blame for their own demise. This is called Karma. They got too greedy.

  33. 133

BTW the FUNNIEST part of this whole downloading music thing. I've bought MORE CDs now than I did before I could download music. Why? Because I could actually hear the music before buying it. No one buys a car without testing it out or looking under the hood.

But the thing was, the RIAA and studios were making a buttload of money from CDs from crap pre-made acts that had one hit. You payed out the ass for that ONE song. People now could download the CD, realize that there is only one song on it that they liked and didn't buy it. THAT is what hurt the recording industry. These types of "talent" are easier to deal with because most are not creative and the studios get to control every part of their music.

The blame is all on themselves.

Most of my friends have BOUGHT more CDs than we used to as well. (If you really like a song or CD, you are gonna want the best sound quality of it, which only a CD can bring, not an mp3) Having said that, I rip CDs lossless. And the live stuff I've gotten online that you can't buy in stores I've had for over a decade now.

  34. 134

Nooooooooooooooo! The last of the mega giant. Boo Hoo! No more wondering aisles for hard-to-find music. Now we're delegated to going on line or fucking Target - even worse Wal-Mart! Ugh!

  48. 148

Re: norman THANKS TO ALL THOSE THIEVES THAT KEEP STILLING MUSIC THRU THE WEB! – Actually statistics have shown that more people who do this, often buy more CDs as well. It's the fact that the RIAA and their buddies fought mp3s for so long, they got left behind. It's the fact that the prices of CDs stayed the same while CD players cost less. If CDs weren't overpriced, this would have never happened in the amount it did. Blame those that over-charged for CDs. BTW you know it's cheaper to make a CD than it is a cassette tape? Indeed.
