What an asshole! There should be more people like thi sin the world. her employer should be commending her for what she has done, not firing her! I hope the town boycotts this place enough so that they go out of business.

I live in Canada and I have cancer. This is disgusting, but don't blame Canada - blame the assholes she works for. I got "let go" after my cancer diagnosis…employers need to be a lot more compassionate when it comes to issues such as this. Unfortunately, maybe if this man's wife or daughter ever get's cancer, he'll understand.

I have to agree with a number of people on here that its not the nations fault that this women has been fired, the one thats to blame is the owner of the restaurant.
Its sad that this has happend and that this women has to go through this. The only thing that anyone can do is boycott the resaurant and if the women feels that she needs to she can sue for her job being terminated with out just cause.
But don't blame all of canada for this, things like this happen in the USA all the time it just that its so common that its just not news anymore.

Being from Canada, I can say that we all agree this is a mistake. However, it is happening in a small town, this could happen in any small town in north America. We have quite a few unusual hairstyles in restaurants in Toronto! On a realistic side, having someone with no hair serve you in a restaurant is actually much more hygienic.

As a female who has also lost family members to cancer, I am outraged that this women lost her job because she is showing her support of cancer by shaving her head. If I choose to shave mine as well, should I worry about being fired too?

I live inthe same neighbourhood where this happened and I can tell you that Canadians are outraged at this! Every news show had this on at noon today and this restaurant is feeling the heat. Shame on them. My sister did the same thing to raise mney for breast cancer last year and she was respected immensely.

This is not part of Canadian workman's rights. This is the restaurant she works for being ignorant bastards. I am a Canadian and have seen several times on TV & the newspaper where people have shaved their heads for Cancer with the full support of their employeer. Some employeers have made donations or even matched a donation with the money they raised. I wish they would have said which restaurant, because nobody would ever eat their again. I hope she takes this to court. Her employeer probably has no idea what it is like to lose a loved one to cancer.
As a Canadian it is a digusting shame to have such ignorance come out of one person. the owner of that restaurant obviously has no heart and no concern about others. To give you hair to a cause like Cops for Cancer should be celebrated. She should not be punished because she shaved her head for such a great cause. I hope that people in Owens Sound will take a stand and let that restaurant owner know that what he did will not be tolerated!

i live near the area and there is now more to this story where she had been late/missed shifts etc. and was told if it happened one more time she would be fired….aparently that happened…so she was fired….there are always two sides to a story and they both need to be looked at before we can judge

I live in owen sound ontario and have my hole life and never in that length of time did i think that something like this would happen. A) the owner of the restaurant is sending a very bad message to children , that being a good person is wrong B) she did something good for a lot of people and now she is being punished C) it is no ones business but her own what she does with her HAIR (it's hers not yours if you have a problem with a shaved head then don't shave yours)

It isn't a nation issue. It's about a sexist job–women have to look the part to waitress. Besides, as a chick who has also shaved my head, in Canada, I have experienced the sexism first hand, from strangers on the street, both male and female. Women are supposed to look like 'feminine' women. The hatred and anger that pours forth when you do not fit the expectations is astonishing. It is not a national problem–the ignorance and hatred comes only from the narrow minded, and such sexist crap flows across borders around the world.

I live in Owen Sound and know the whole story…she didn't lose her job she was put on a leave of absence. I don't agree with the restaurant or it's owners, but let's at least get the story straight. She was forewarned about shaving her head. The restaurant has a strict dress code for it's staff, that is known to them all, which includes rules on tattoos and piercings. When she was hired she knew the rules.

I think this s appalling! When will people stop judging by looks? I live in Canada and I did the exact same thing; shaved my head to a Buzz-cut to support my son when he lost his hair to cancer….and generally MY reception has been the opposite; the majority of people surprisingly actually *like* and admire it and say they think it looks funky,and cool,and cute and they wish they had the "courage" to do it! I only have had a few snide comments(mostly from old ladies) like I look like a "dyke", a "neo-Nazi", a "punk",a "skinhead", a "rebel" etc… but generally it has been positive,and I ended up liking the cut; it's so liberating and carefree and easy-care,and ideal for swimming and travelling,and has become my own unique signature style now!!
