and the us is 10 times more fucked up lol, sad story though, despicable.
This is not a Canadian issue, it's on the restaurant management. I live in New Brunswick, one of the most "behind the times" provinces, and that woman would be celebrated here, NOT fired.

I don't understand why we as a nation should be responsible for one asshole's remark & decision. It is absolutely shameful that she commits a selfless act and loses a job in return.
An asshole manager in Canada is the same as an asshole manager anywhere else! Don't be negative towards the country because of a common asshole! Be proud that this lady did what she did for what she believed in! That's what our country is about. Also, you really think she won't have her job back or be offered one within a day? Believe me…the non-asshole Canadians will make sure she is employed, one way or another.
After this story spreads, they can kiss their restaurant good-bye. So sad.

I live in Ontario, fairly close to Owen Sound and know that it is a pretty busy area in the summer months. I think the proper thing to do would have been to ask her to switch positions while her hair grew back. From a consumers mind, especially a mans, having a bald waitress isn't all that appealing. It would bring down the employers business, well what ever tables she would be serving. Altogether though it was an extremely bad decision to ask her to leave. I'm sure there are many more positions she would be qualified to work.
RAISE SOME HELL FOR THAT BUSINESS. I will surely boycott the restaurant when I visit Owen Sound!! I only wish I knew what the restaurnt was called..

First off I was rasied in port elgin which is..45 mins away from Owen Sound..its not a HICK TOWN ..it used to be..kinda..till they got wal-mart and Home Depot and etc..its actaully pretty big "town" .. and I agree with the others when they say its NOT CANADA'S fault it IS afterall the RESTURANT..should get rid of that reasturant? The woman was warned not to cut her hair. Friends and I got drunk years ago and tried to cut a waiter friend's hair. It was ruined so he had to shave it. He got fired and GOT OVER IT.
Ok, not sure why you are blaming ALL OF CANADA for this happening Perez…we certainly don't point the finger at your ENTIRE country every time something shady or awful happens to ONE of it's inhabitants. It does suck she got fired and I am actually participating in tomorrow nights "Relay for Life" where many people shave their heads all without repercussions.

As a Canadian, it isn't Canada's fault that she lost her job. Its the business's fault. She shouldn't have lost her job, and I am pretty sure that actually goes against the Employment Standards for Canada, or any of the provinces. Honestly if I were her, I wouldn't be sitting by. The owner says its not a public matter, well it is. I believe it is rated up there with employers who are willing to fire a female employee for being pregnant, which is against the Employment Standards and they could be sued. If a man who worked for the restaurant shaved his head for cancer the owner wouldn't have gave a rats ass… Look at this way, at least you would never find one of her hairs in your food!

The restauraunt owner had absolutley NO right to fire her for shaving her head bald. Especially for fundraising for the Cancer Society. I agree what the restaurant owner did was wrong. I'm sure there are a lot more people doing alot worse things to people in parts of the world. I think the whole ordeal was nonsense. She's got another job and she's liking it. Okay, so this was an appalling incident. But, my friend (a white woman) was visiting a southern state a couple years back and she got spit on by a white man after she asked a black man for directions. And the racist white guy called her a N lover! And this was a few years ago! I don't believe you'd find this happening in Canada.

Im from Canada and was truly disgusted when i read this article yesterday. However situations like this are world wide. Society has placed such emphasis on our appearance that we cant even find beauty in this womans dedication to finding a cure to a deadly disease. The actions of her ex-boss clearly display his ignorance towards a disease that will effect everybody at some point and could quite possibly effect him. The patrons at the restaurant should also be ashamed to agree with such an asshole on this subject. If we could all give up trying attain societys image of beauty and make one small sacrifice of shaving our head we may have a cure, or be on our way to one. It is women like this that should give us inspiration.

The fact she shaved her head for cancer awareness is admirable but irrelevant to the issue. I also shaved my head (just cause I wanted to) and lost my serving job. Many men shave their heads and keep their jobs. It is discrimination and the restaurant industry is founded on it. Hold owners to the same standards that offices are held to.

ok perez, this is not a canadian problem. this could happen anywhere. what i would like to know, however is the nationality of the restaurant owners. what i found really interesting was the lame excuse that they were not informed she was going to shave her head. since when do we have to inform our employers that we are getting our hair cut? this is wrong on so many levels. take this to court and whatever you win, and you will, donate to charity.

I'm an American and visited Toronto a few months back for a business conference. When I sat down in a restaurant with a few other collegues, three or four people came up to me and asked if I was American. I answered that I was, and they began spouting hate about America and Bush, then told me to get out, called me a terrorist, and threatened me.
Now I'm all for not blaming an entire country based on one person's actions. What the owner of this restaurant did was absolutely wrong (but hey, maybe one day HE will get cancer). However I find it interesting that a lot of people are, and rightfully so, posting that it isn't all of Canada's fault, yet I was treated as if I single-handedly put Bush in office and declared war. A little ironic, especially since I voted against Bush twice.
