…i call bullshit. there are plenty of ways to raise money for a cause without deliberately going against the wishes of your employer. she was told there was a policy on hair length prior to having it cut. i bike 160 miles annually to raise money for charity, there are many ways to raise money for any given charity. she wanted to "prove a point," as well as raise money for cancer. sounds kind of selfish to me. if you don't like the rules at the place you work, find another job. this isn't a human-rights issue at all, and i consider myself a very liberal canadian…

Dear Canada - seriously?! One waitress gets fired for terrible reasons and suddenly the whole country is at fault? Thats a crummy deal but believe it or not, that one restaurant owner does not represent the entire country. Shocking I know, but true.

Thanks Perez for posting this story because everyone needs to know about this because it's absolutely hideous! Looks like good deeds don't matter anymore….

owen sound has like 10 thousand people… that is a total inaccurate view of our much more politically correct country over the u.s

  5. 405

See, it's not America. It's just human nature to act like this. Some decide that's not the way and don't, and some ignore their conscience.

Um you can't put it on Canadians.
This kinda of stuff happens in America too. Geez stop being so jealous just because Canada is the best country in the world :)

Um you can't put it on Canadians. This kinda of stuff happens in America too. But I bet you don't stop people from blaming America for things that happen like that here. ;)

And gotta love the patriotism in the sentence below. ;D

Re: shut u – No, Canada is the second largest country in the world, after Russia. Check the CIA World Fact book, and many other sources.
Canada - 9,984,670 sq. km, China - 9,596,960 sq. km.

Hi, I never comment..but I'm from Canada…I don't think this story has anything to do with the fact that it took place in Canada…it's more like the restaurant is at fault. Rarely do I ever see you blame the whole of America for the dumb shit that goes on there…

  11. 411

[re=2336305]Re: uhh Rarely do I ever see you blame the whole of America for the dumb shit that goes on there…/re]
No, just PARTS of America, *rolleyes* To him Hollyweird should probably be his own country. Anything out of it and New York i am sure he considers "fly over zone"

  12. 412

BTW now maybe some of you Canadians know how it feels when people blame the actions on one person, or a small group on all of American. It's really alarming that people are still ready to get their lynching ropes and fire sticks as they were in the past. You'd think humankind would have learned to not follow that kind of behavior.

But having said that, we ARE only human. And we DO make mistakes. Sometimes honest ones, and sometimes not-so-honest ones.

The most important part is, owning up to it, and seeing it for what it is. And not try to justify your actions with word spin or political correctness bologna.

anyways, just cuz one douchebag pulled a stupid stunt like that - don't blame the city - im sure that they will take care of it because guess what? people in owen sound get cancer too

    418

I'm from owen sound, and also related. It's unfortunate that she had to lose her job, but it was such a big story that other restaurants have already offered her jobs. Owen Sound is a small town, word spreads, most people won't be eating at Nethanials for a while as far as Im concerned. In other words, good for her to do what she wants!

American people do all kinds of STUPID CRAP everyday..so please don't make comments about "unacceptable" behaviour. The town where this happened is a VERY small town in the middle of nowhere, not that it makes it ok…but had it happened in Toronto, well maybe thats worth a comment…

  31. tamsim says – reply to this

    431

Perez - I love U but ….. Toronto is NOT Canada - just because this happened in Toronto please do not classify this as something Canada has done. If it happened in California I wouldn't blame it on the U.S and say that your country had to do something about it.

  32. b.s says – reply to this

    432

ok, i live in owen sound, and this is definitely one isolated incident that has caused outrage throughout the country, and especially throughout our city. What happened to this poor waitress was sexist and disgusting. However, it is not an accurate reflection on canada, or owen sound. This was just one restaurant owner being an asshole. His business will not survive much longer in this town after this incident.

  33. GoodOn says – reply to this

    433

    Congratulations Perez!
This has been the most amazing thing to read! You have managed jump start the motors of many Canadians who normally take the back seat passive approach or response. You have done more for Canadian Unity and pride then the Government has been able to do in 30 years. Honestly, I don't see what all the fuss is about. Perez captured a headline from the Canadian news, acknowledged that it was disgusting and then asked his readers (Canadian) to get engaged and do something about it. Unless I am missing something, I don't see a slam against Canada! We know the name of the restaurant and the city, so do what you can to show your support! Donate to Cancer Research, boycott the restaurant etc! Our actions will speak louder than all of the words on here (and talk about generalizations!!!).

  34. Heathe says – reply to this

    437

    Dear Perez,
This story is from my home town. I am currently living in Australia and disgusted to see this story. Awareness and fundraising for cancer research is a HUGE deal in Owen Sound. I can't believe this happened.

    438

It's not Canada… It's one stupid resturant owner that no doubt will go out of business because he is a dumb a$$. It will all work out in the end, she will be rehired by somewhere better, make more money, and the $hit hole she worked in before will be so bogged down with legal costs the head chef will not know what to do with himself.

Okay lets talk about the elderly man in Hartford Conneticut who got ran over in the street a week ago, and a bunch of people stood there and stared, and one even took a picture. Not one person bent over to see if he was okay and try to help!!!
    That is unnacceptable
    Let's do something about that!!!

I am the daughter of one of the owner's which cingram has already mentioned. He is a single father, and I deffinatly agree that what he did was wrong, and I only know as much as you do. possibly even less because i just read about it in the newspaper, I have not discussed this event with him at all. But when you see tabloids with celebrity gossip in them, do you beleive the full story? In most cases, no, because you know there are parts missing. Yes he layed her off and someone mentioned she is now jobless. It says in the OS paper she had 2 other jobs and that they had discussed this in april. It was more than likely a spur of the moment event and she should have waited a day or two before going to the media. My father also donates at the least hundreds[possibly more] of dollars to any charity that he comes upon . Now because of the lack of communication he could lose his dream, his restaurant.
All-in-all; what he did was wrong, but it was based on a lack of communication. He is not a bad man he just was in shock since they had discussed other options in advance. Everyone makes mistakes, this one was just taken public.
Thank you to everyone who has not been extremely hateful and negative but supportive. He has feelings too, currently the majority of you is angry yet his is regretful and depressed.

I'm a Canadian and i have to say we are all in shock about this! It hit our headline a while ago and I'm disgusted! I am also in the service industry and my boss wouldn't even think about firing one of us for shaving our head for cancer instead she would just call up the news and say isn't our resturaunt great doing things for the community!

Canada is a beautiful and friendly country. I always feel welcome and am treated very well whenever visiting.
The waitress in this story was fired by an insensitive jerk, and I'm sure his restaurant business will suffer because of one big whopper of a mistake. Don't judge this wonderful country by the actions of one misguided business owner.
In fact, if John McSame is elected president, I honestly would love to move into Canada and hide for the next 4 years.

I agree that she shouldn't have lost her job over this, but what the hell has it got to do with Canada as a whole. Perez, maybe you should reconsider the reprecussions of such a headline as, "Dear Canada" and, "You know we love y'all, but this is unacceptable…" because you've basicly just said –Shame on you Canada–for something that happens in so many countries of the world every day; faultless USA included! Or maybe YOU personally have a suggestion as to how we might better ourselves as a nation to live up to the standards of PEREZMEDIA…as if your opinion actually matters!

  48. Jen says – reply to this

    448

First things first, this has NOTHING to do with Canada as a place, the employer on the other hand is in the wrong. A Big mistake on his part, it is outragious that he would "lay-off" an employee for supporting a cause that affects Everyone in this world. Its crazy things like this that should grab the media's attention because it's completely discusting!
BUT dont blame all of Canada for one person's stupid move!

  49. Canadi says – reply to this

    449

I see no valid reason for the comment associated with this article. Do not blame Canada for the ignorance of one. We could blame the US for the ignorance of many. You have no idea where the owner is from, what cultures or background he has. Don't you dare judge a book by it's cover. Shame on you Perez. I'm dissapointed.

dumb ass. This happens in the states too. For example, after Mark Hamill got into that awful car accident, he wasn't given anymore roles because his face was a little battered up. He could only get voice over roles. The world's fucked up. It's not just Canada. Trust me.

I was pretty pissed off when I read this story in my local newspaper, but I can't say that I was entirely shocked. When I was attending hairdressing school, I shaved my head for Balding For Dollars at the BC Children's Hospital. I figured it was a good cause, who could disagree with that? Well, I coulfdne't believe it when suddenly I was treated poorly by my instructor and program director. Apparently my bald head was damaging the program's reputation. The clients didn't seem to have a problem with it; some of them even donated to the cause after I explained to them why I had no hair. I pretty much learned that some people are more worried about themselves than others. I will be shaving my head again next year with my soon-to-be husband, and if I lose my job over it, I'll find another one. I don't think I'd want to work for someone who is more worried about their own reputation than such an important cause anyway. I'm sure karma will come back to get Stacey Fearnall's boss.

You mean the one he had right before Empire Strikes Back came out, and they have to have a Wampa "scar" him up before so they could explain the differences?

It's also cause he isn't a very good actor BTW, and everyone that saw him saw "Luke" not the character he played.

Re: Niki – I come from Owen Sound. I don't see how these completely rude comments about Owen Sounders are necessary in this situation. We are not a bunch of hicks, nor are we the mullet capital of Canada. People keep telling Perez not to generalize about Canadians (which I do agree with, but believe he did not mean for it to come out that way), well please don't judge everyone in Owen Sound as somehow inferior to the rest of Canada. The waitress in question WAS treated unfairly, she has since moved on and has been offered other employment — kudos to her! She should NEVER have been put through this incident. This is a serious form of discrimination and I hope that it can be resolved and that the seriousness of the overall situation is understood around the world. Canada is not at fault….it is the restaurant in question; and on a personal note, it is not the town in question that is at fault either.
