We told y'all about the explosive sit down interview that Clint Eastwood had with the British media in which he tells Spike Lee to "shut his face" and to study history.
Well….
No surprise, Spike Lee has a response to the Dirty one and it's a doozy!
Says Lee:
"First of all, the man is not my father and we're not on a plantation either. He's a great director. He makes his films, I make my films. The thing about it though, I didn't personally attack him. And a comment like 'a guy like that should shut his face' — come on Clint, come on. He sounds like an angry old man right there."
Lee has a proposal for Eastwood — "If he wishes, I could assemble African-American men who fought at Iwo Jima and I'd like him to tell these guys that what they did was insignificant and they did not exist," he said. "I'm not making this up. I know history. I'm a student of history. And I know the history of Hollywood and its omission of the one million African-American men and women who contributed to World War II."
And Lee's response to Eastwood's claim of his historical ignorance — "I never said he should show one of the other guys holding up the flag as black. I said that African-Americans played a significant part in Iwo Jima," he said. "For him to insinuate that I'm rewriting history and have one of the four guys with the flag be black … no one said that. It's just that there's not one black in either film. And because I know my history, that's why I made that observation."
Lee ended the interview saying, "Even though he's trying to have a Dirty Harry flashback, I'm going to take the Obama high road and end it right here. Peace and love."

Spike is absolutely right. There should have been some black soldiers in that movie. Black soldiers definitely were heroes in that war as well as every other war this country has fought. Deal with it. Who is that old soft-on to tell Spike to shut his face? He showed his lack of class in making that remark. What ever the tiff between Clint Eastwood and Spike Lee might be, I as a white male find it very offensive that Spike Lee feels the need to use the word "plantation". What relevance does it have to their little tiff? Get over it. Neither you nor your ancestors are slaves or have been for many generations. It was HORRIBLE what happened during that time. But it's 2008 and it's about time move on. I found Clint's behavior to be very childish. Spike was only making a statement that African Americans also fought in World War II which they did. But there hasn't been a movie about their contributions. Latinos have also fought in the war too but they don't get a mention either. Spike Lee is widely known to hate whites. I wonder how many times he scanned thru the two movies just to see if there was a black man in the background of the films. He wants publicity, his career is in the shitter. What better way to get attention than to go after one of the most respected Actor/directors in Hollywood waving the race card. What's funny hear is that 2 GROWN men are sitting there arguing with each other over 2 completely different topics. Clint's point was that he was portraying the events leading up to the lifting of the American flag during WWII (hence why it's called FLAGS of our Fathers). Eastwood was in no way saying that black men did not take part in WWII, nor is he saying that they're contributions are trifling. He's saying that he did not focus on that aspect of the war, and if Spike Lee was actually paying attention (in his history books as well as to what people are saying), then he would understand that. I would also have to say that the quickest way to make an argument void is to make reference to Clint Eastwood and the word plantation in the same sentence. Clearly there is a climatic story behind the raising of the flag and the famous picture of it and all Lee is saying is if your gonna give a history lesson, especially on a movie, be accurate.
It's real easy for a Caucasian to say that he is making a big deal out of this. However Caucasians have ALWAYS been a part of school curriculums. It would be nice to know that in the past, someone who has the same color as me did something extraordinary for this country other than be a slave and they have…..you just never hear about it. Blacks, not all, but a good percentage, just want to keep on sitting around and stewing in their own racially charged, negative juices. A lot of blacks have just cocooned themselves into this sub-culture of America and can't see beyond the own tip of their nose. Slavery was an atrocity, especially the transportation of slaves across the Atlantic through the "middle passage". But there are a lot of people through the ages who had it much, much worse. Genghis Khan brutally tortured and killed many millions of people. The Spanish Inquistions tortured to death hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people in the most mind-boggling disgusting ways. Joseph Stalin murdered about 3 times as many as his own citizens as Hitler did Jews. The American Indians were murdered in mass numbers, stripped of their land, put on a death march across the country, and what remained of them were forced to live on reservations. Get over it people. It is history. That was then, this is now. Stop living in the past and start assimulating into main stream society just like everyone else.

Let's see, Clint Eastwood has been a tv star, a sex symbol, one of the biggest movie stars in the world, the mayor of Carmel CA, won Academy Awards, had actual hit movies as an acclaimed director…Spike Lee made some really shitty movies under what amounted to affirmative action in the industry, then he seemingly dropped off the face of the earth only to pop up for a frivolous lawsuit against a crappy tv channel and to complain about other people's successful projects. THE MEN HOLDING UP THE FLAG WERE WHITE. I'm not being racist, that's just the way it was. They did however change the races of the men holding up the flag at Ground Zero in that famous photo when it was being made into a statue. Although the men were all white, they decided it would be politically correct to make one man black and one Hispanic. Imagine you were one of the men actually holding up that flag? How would that make you feel? If someone wants to make a tribute to a war, represent all the races that were there. But when it comes to a specific event, make it historically accurate!

Spike Lee is such a pathetic white hater. It's so blatantly obvious and has been for a long time. I feel sorry for him. He's stuck and can't move on and taking an "Obama" high road isn't going to help him. He needs to just accept responsiblity for his own actions and deal, but that seems to be such too much of an ordeal for such a large percentage of black men in America. If you're not filming a historical film based on a true story (such as this "Iwo Jima") then don't call it such. Just say you're making a movie about war, fighting, and soldiers. Though it looks like one, this is not a white world and that applies to the soldiers who fought in WW2 as well. For the one million African-American men who fought in that war, shouldn't there be a SPRINKLE of Black people…come on now! In reality, during WW2, blacks were segregated from white soldiers who wanted nothing to do with them. Why would black soldiers be shown fighting alongside white soldiers when they weren't allowed to do so back then.

Blacks serving in the US military were treated terrible during WWII, so it doesn't surprise me that Clint would try to deny their existence all together. It is sad, there are few people willing to tell the story of what the black community did to save their country.
