We told y'all about the explosive sit down interview that Clint Eastwood had with the British media in which he tells Spike Lee to "shut his face" and to study history.
Well….
No surprise, Spike Lee has a response to the Dirty one and it's a doozy!
Says Lee:
"First of all, the man is not my father and we're not on a plantation either. He's a great director. He makes his films, I make my films. The thing about it though, I didn't personally attack him. And a comment like 'a guy like that should shut his face' — come on Clint, come on. He sounds like an angry old man right there."
Lee has a proposal for Eastwood — "If he wishes, I could assemble African-American men who fought at Iwo Jima and I'd like him to tell these guys that what they did was insignificant and they did not exist," he said. "I'm not making this up. I know history. I'm a student of history. And I know the history of Hollywood and its omission of the one million African-American men and women who contributed to World War II."
And Lee's response to Eastwood's claim of his historical ignorance — "I never said he should show one of the other guys holding up the flag as black. I said that African-Americans played a significant part in Iwo Jima," he said. "For him to insinuate that I'm rewriting history and have one of the four guys with the flag be black … no one said that. It's just that there's not one black in either film. And because I know my history, that's why I made that observation."
Lee ended the interview saying, "Even though he's trying to have a Dirty Harry flashback, I'm going to take the Obama high road and end it right here. Peace and love."

Clint Eastwood is a douche. My grandpa was in Pearl Harbor during the attack. The black men on his ship were assigned menial tasks like cook and laundry, etc. They had segregated quarters because there was always some white trash weirdo from the south saying "I ain't gonna share my quarters with no coloreds". When the attack happened, many of the white shipmen were slaughtered, as they were above decks. The cooks and launderers, who were in many cases not really trained to fight, picked up the weapons and saved a lot of lives that day. Including my grandpa, who is 85 this year. So, yeah, Clint, the black soldiers in the army, navy, air force have my gratitude, even if they don't have yours. The reason some of the white men survived to hold up a flag at Iwo Jima is because there were black men supporting their efforts to get there.

Spike Lee has a rock solid accurate case here. Not only white people fought in WWII, black people did too. Spike never said they raised the flag, the fact that Clint threw that into it really does prove that he has no accurate defense, and that he really is an old bitter man (sorry for not taking the high road there, but I felt the need to call it as he is, after all, he is a republican, which basically is the definition of old bitter man, and rich and white, which Clint also is). Spike has plenty reason to be angry, what is old Clint's excuse, constipation?

Spike Lee is just trying to get attention for himself since he hasn't made a movie either critics or the public cared about in over a decade. Clint Eastwood has developed into one of the great directors of our time while Spike is about as relevant as Tara Reid. Give it up Spike - no one gives a damn what you think. Make a decent movie and maybe someone will care.
In 1989 Spike Lee's film Do the Right Thing didn't receive a nomination for best picture while Driving Miss Daisy won the Academy Award for Best Picture that year. I think that is ironic. Driving Miss Daisy deals w/ racism & in the end tells a great story about humanity. It is the story about the goodness that emerges out of relationships & the reciprocal love between people of different backgrounds. It also depicts how many people - not just blacks-face racism. In contrast to the positive message relative to race relations of Driving Miss Daisy, Do the Right Thing sends a message of hate. Do the Right Thing is a film that perpetuates racism & fuels the anger & resentment black people have towards whites. That is what Spike Lee wants because it keaps him relevant. He needs blacks to hate whites so he can be their hero by standing up for them. I am sure his dis at the Oscars to a film that is in stark contrast to his negative message was a jab to his ego. He has been trying for over 20 yrs to incite anger & build resentment in black people towards whites. It is sad because if you insist on living in the past you will never move forward to better yourself & racism will never end.

So how far do we want to take this, because surely women also contributed to this historical development, the argument remains in what story gets told and from which angle. The truth is that most writers who are getting Hollywood airtime happen to be A: white and B: male. Let's just look at it as that kind of artform. It's a business of predominantly white men telling stories about white men, about their experience. It's not like it's global truth, it's one facet, and a particular perspective. Let Hollywood be it's white male introverted, homophobic-struggling insecure beast. There are other avenues of expression. It's not the only story in town, but it is authentic to a particular experience in the world. I suppose we get upset because people feel that they are not included in a kind of populist zeitgeist. I get that and sympathize, but the hard truth is that the only way to combat that dominance is to tell your own stories and push them into the superhighway. What do you think Spike Lee?

If the iwo Jima issue is so important to Spike Lee, I would suggest he make a movie about the black munitions company on the island. Unfortunately, there's probably no story line and them movie would be boring
Of all the directors Spike Lee had to pick a fight, it was with Eastwood. It's not as if he hasn't made movies centered around a black man. His movie about Charlie Byrd, the jazz impressio and Isaih Washington in True Crime had leading black men. Why doesn't Spike go after Spielberg or Scorcese…how many historical movies have they made about the black the man.

ok yikes a bit. you can't really compare the systemic abuse of 'other' in our culture. Yes hopefully one day it will not be an issue of race or gender, but all that shit did happen and filters into how we are now. One of the biggest things the US should be proud of is its movement towards equality, not out of some moral sense of obligation but because it's the enlightened and forward thing to do and will ultimately lead to better problem solving. It wasn't so long ago that certain people weren't even allowed to vote. (I won't mention any names here, but uhh you know what I'm talking about right?) So like no kidding people are sensitive to their involvement in the world's unfolding and the ingrained perception of their role in that world. SO like let's be aware and honest about that. No one's asking you to take an entire responsibility for the past, but let's please have some awareness of the real oppression that is part of our history. When you've been kicked down a lot solely on the base of your skin color or gender, you're going to have some anger issues and should be given a reorientation amnesty period where the privileged class gives you some venting space so you can sort out your new freedom. Unless of course you still feel like black people or gays or women are a lesser class of people that have somehow tricked the world into acceptance of their viewpoint. Just sayin' you know?

Since he brought up the Demo nominee, I'll give you a little thought to ponder. His whole campaign has been run on the grand gesture I was the only one who was against the war; seemingly everyone thinks he voted no. Guess what folks, he was not even in the senate until 2005; the vote was cast and Bush signed a declaration in 2003. His big speech was at an anti-war rally and said he was against it. He had no vote. We don't know what he would have done cause he wasn't there. No one in the media seems to talk about this, they all say "he had the insight to be against the war from the first" which makes people think he voted against it. I'm no McCane fan, but are we truly going to vote for someone for president because we feel guilty about how the blacks were treated years ago and we think this will mend the fence? Better think about it.

Spike's measured reply states exactly what I thought upon reading Eastwood's unecessarily defensive/aggressive and curt answer. I don't wonder at Eastwood's snappishness, however, as have read Sondra Locke's book. If historical accuracy was Eastwood's goal, flag raising aside, blacks ought to have been represented in the battle.

Wow, with that one drop rule it sounds like the courts were on a witch hunt to put people in a subordinate group. Same with the one-sixteenth rule. I was brought up to treat people as I want to be treated. I am so glad those ideals were not brought into my home. I do wish my history classes spent more time on the 1800's because it seems to still be an open wound for our country. Maybe if we were taught about the good, bad and ugly there would be more tolerance and understanding. Thank you.

God, if there's nothing else going on then these two are at it… I think they should just call it even and stop the nonsense. Eastwood's merits as an actor as well as a director speak for themselves; he doesn't have to explain anything to anyone anymore. He can do what he pleases, no one has the right to question a man of his caliber. There are very few people (how many can you name?) who have a career to match his, that's why he's now at a place where he has no obligation to explain or justify his films. Just stop the idiotic "you're-a-racist-because-you-haven't-included-all-races-in-everything"- BS. If it's a film about a war that actually happened and there were no black guys raising the flag, then why should black guys be "planted" in the scenes?? There are a lot of films with all-black casts and nobody's calling the makers of such films racist or anything else. When I look at a film, I don't see different races or colors; I see people. Plain and simple.
I think Spike handled it extremely well. Take the "Obama high-road"…I like that! Always works better in a person's favor when they take the high road. Look at how much of an angry fool Eastwood looks like because he didn't.
