We told y'all about the explosive sit down interview that Clint Eastwood had with the British media in which he tells Spike Lee to "shut his face" and to study history.
Well….
No surprise, Spike Lee has a response to the Dirty one and it's a doozy!
Says Lee:
"First of all, the man is not my father and we're not on a plantation either. He's a great director. He makes his films, I make my films. The thing about it though, I didn't personally attack him. And a comment like 'a guy like that should shut his face' — come on Clint, come on. He sounds like an angry old man right there."
Lee has a proposal for Eastwood — "If he wishes, I could assemble African-American men who fought at Iwo Jima and I'd like him to tell these guys that what they did was insignificant and they did not exist," he said. "I'm not making this up. I know history. I'm a student of history. And I know the history of Hollywood and its omission of the one million African-American men and women who contributed to World War II."
And Lee's response to Eastwood's claim of his historical ignorance — "I never said he should show one of the other guys holding up the flag as black. I said that African-Americans played a significant part in Iwo Jima," he said. "For him to insinuate that I'm rewriting history and have one of the four guys with the flag be black … no one said that. It's just that there's not one black in either film. And because I know my history, that's why I made that observation."
Lee ended the interview saying, "Even though he's trying to have a Dirty Harry flashback, I'm going to take the Obama high road and end it right here. Peace and love."

Dirty Harry is all pissy because he forgot to represent blacks on the battle field, and then has the nerve to cherry pick, referring only to the flag raising, and then tell Spike to shut his face, AND to study history, when there were blacks on that battlefield in real life. I'm with Spike here, because this is about historical accuracy. Clint owes Lee an apology. Love the deserved father/plantation boomerang. Spike is not only brilliant, but fearless and on point while summing up his statement in a classy, non-confrontational way. Clint's not a young man anymore, after all, anyway. It was still a good film.

His 'track record' (some very mediocre stuff in between, btw) doesn't give him licence to say things like 'shut his face' because he's Clint Eastwood. Spike is basically criticizing Clint for not using blacks in his depiction of Iwo Jima, nad implying that (Clint) should have made his movie differently. Clint's movie focuses on specific historical figures–as specific event–none of whom involved were black. The flag raising story while significant, does NOT insinuate that there were no significant black contributors to the war. Spike shouldn't be telling Clint how to make movies. He DOES need to shut his fucking face. He's an idiot.

Re: LeeSpi – There is no comparison between the social-economic state of Blacks in the US and African Countries, except for the fact that it is all a long-term product of European involvement. That said (and this point is not directed at you), Blacks cannot go "back to Africa" because that is not their home. There is nothing in Africa for American Blacks that they can relate to and I doubt someone from, say, Ghana is going to relate to an A.A. just because they are the same color–I think experience is more prominent in importance: the commonalities have been severed by both geographic and historical barriers.

This reminds me of the sixties when the only decent roles women got in film were background support wives, or the blood curdling 'I'm a scared idiot' scream. Why does Spike Lee even have to point out that blacks were involved in this battle? They were 'overlooked', just like women were in film in the sixties. Women had and have many more years to battle sexism, and from some of the remarks on here (albeit obviously from the low end of the curve) it's obvious why Mr. Lee is still speaking up. He didn't say they should raise the flag, and wasn't telling Eastwood how to make his movie. He asked where the blacks were. I agree with Spike Lee. My husband fought in WWII. African Americans definitely participated in that war. That movie showed brave soldiers fighting for our country. The total focus was not on just a few men who raised a flag. Therefore, the history of the film should have been correct.

I hate to say this, but Spike Lee was absolutely correct this time. In his original statement he said nothing about having blacks raise the flag. He just pointed out that Eastwood has made two war films where there was not one black soldier dispicted in either story. The statement that Eastwood made was completely degrading and, honestly, a little racist. Lee was justified in his response and truly showed that he does have some sense of intelligence and class (aside from the old man part).

They did however change the races of the men holding up the flag at Ground Zero in that famous photo when it was being made into a statue. Although the men were all white, they decided it would be politically correct to make one man black and one Hispanic. Imagine you were one of the men actually holding up that flag? How would that make you feel? If someone wants to make a tribute to a war, represent all the races that were there. But when it comes to a specific event, make it historically accurate!

clint is a hypocrite! his film "Bird" about the incredible and ground breaking jazz musician Charlie Parker was quite inaccurate. my grandfather and his friends were all musicians who worked with Parker and they really disliked how it turned out. they were grateful someone made a film about this relatively unsung american jazz legend, but were also totally pissed off about how much was just sheer fantasy or supposition. if clint had done his homework, his research, he would have interviewed the right people & it would have been a superior film. an old white guy who made a sloppy film about a black musical genius should not be scolding a young black director in this circumstance, it's just too much hypocrisy at once, lol.
