Sheila is right whether you people like to admit it or not. I emphathize with you Sheila, I really do. I am a single mother who struggles to pay the bills also. My son, who is now 15, was just recently diagnosed as being autistic. It breaks my heart to see how much he tries to fit in but kids still make fun of him. But you know what, he is probably the most decent kid I know and all he wants to do is be little "regular" kids. He doesn't steal, doesn't do drugs, or any of the other stuff that plagues today's teenagers…and some of his peers thinks he's strange because of that. I fluctuate every day between saying, "he's not autistic," and "maybe he is autistic." I always knew he was different, I just thought he was unique…not some predetermined label that society has placed on kids who are unique. I worry that he won't be able to take care of himself, that his peers will constantly take advantage of him and ridicule him…and so many other things. We have discussed his being different and he says it doesn't bother him that people (mostly kids) don't understand him, and I can only hope he really means it. He seems to be happy with who he is, and regardless of what anyone else thinks, he is my son, and I love him and everything unique about him. So Rumer, Scout, Talulah, if any of you ever read these horrible comments that people say about you, please try not to let them bother you, because it the larger scope of things–they don't really matter.

Re: SAD – Sad, I am so sorry for your situation and nobody knows what causes autism but I worked with these kids for years and I have noticed this and many others (especially for people who have more than 1 autistic kid)…one of the parents or both are just totally delusion in some way. The parents are in their own little world. Most of these parents have spending problems and never realize the consequences of their actions. Most go into manic phases with delusions of grandeur. When there are two autistic kids, the parents are victims of Asperger's Syndrome and other disorders. I truly believe this happens when two damaged people get together and have kids. I believe this to be genetic. Sorry. I stopped working in the field not because of the kids but of the delusional and sometimes narcissistic parents. No thank you!
