Agreed - funny how all these pro-Toronto people currently live there and haven't lived in any other city (maybe not all but surely most)? I've been to Toronto and don't EVER want to go back. It was HORRIBLE! Montreal is my fave Canadian city by far, and I've travelled quite a bit! The guy knows what he is talking about, but I wouldn't dare say it. Don't see what good it does to bash a city for no reason. Toronto people: open your eyes & visit outside your polluted bubble.

I am live in Toronto, and frequently visit Montreal - they are shouldn't even being to be compared. They both have their perks. Though, I guess I can somewhat be slightly Biased living in Toronto. However, love visiting Montreal and feeling like i am positioned in Europe - vive le francais. They both have a win in my books.

Well Rufus as Queen of All Canada you are henceforth banned from Toronto! Trying to be New York? First off no one could be New York because New York is too fabulous and second, Montreal is beautiful…because it's trying to be Europe. And Europe is beautiful. If you want a more New York type city, Toronto's the place, if you want a more Europe type place Montreal is great. However as most of the people living in Toronto weren't actually born and raised in it (I being one of them), I can say that Toronto has quite the charm. It has strength, beauty…what other city can you say has a hidden in it? There are a lot of gems to be found in Toronto…however one of those gems apparently won't be Rufus.
I honestly don't see the difference between Montreal and Toronto. If you think Montreal has more soul, perhaps it's because you're only spending time in the businessy areas in Toronto. You have to look for it in Toronto because it's not as mainstream as in Montreal but there are some really artistic and creative communities. Anyone who cares to bash Toronto without doing their research makes themselves look foolish because Montreal is the exact same city as Toronto as Vancouver as Calgary.
I live in Ottawa - smack in the middle between Toronto and Montreal and have family in both cities. I love the Montreal 'vibe', but I have to say I enjoy visiting Toronto a teeny bit more. I love what Toronto *is*. I don't know if I'd want to live there, it's big and busy - I love living in Ottawa though!

Montreal is in Quebec but its capital is Quebec City. As for the capital of Canada it is also in Ontario although very close to Quebec and is no as the shitty city of Ottawa!

Well I haven't lived in either place, I've been in Toronto and to me, it's dirty and cold (as in the people) and it smells (but not as bad as good ol Steeltown!). I've never been to Montreal period so I can't comment on what it's like there or the people, but I do know that Quebec drivers are pretty damn bad! That being said, I really don't like the mainland period….I'm a Newfie girl and no place will ever be as good as the Rock to me

Toronto is a unique, beautiful city. I've spent time in New York and I can in no way compare the two. Maybe economically they can be compared somewhat but not even in commerce can it be compared. Toronto has some great people…what other city can you go to the bar and hang out with the dudes from Sloan, or Boy, or Ron Sexsmith, Jully Black, the MTV VJ's? What other city can you feel like you're not even in the city when you're at Casa Loma and the Spadina Museum? Shopping on Queen is fantastic, the free concerts at Harbourfront in the summer? Dutch Dreams on St. Clair, $7 for a Jays game on a Sunday afternoon?
Montreal is a beautiful city but there's no reason to bash Toronto…I moved to this city and I'm in love with it. Rufus, it's too bad you trashed our beautiful city.

TO is such a big city, i could understand how one wouldn't like it, if all they did was hang out on yonge st or bay st. however, MY part of TO; queen west, kensington market, ossington area, is really really wonderful.

I personally could not stand Montreal. It felt extremely pretentious and non French speakers are treated rudely. Oh and it was FILTHY and FULL of strip clubs. Downtown Toronto may have a cold exterior (particularly the financial district) but once you leave the beaten path of downtown it is fantastic and full of friendly people. I am not a fan of what they are doing to Queen West though. So what if downtown Toronto is a smaller scale and cleaner New York? ALL major urban centres have that feel. What is wrong with that? Montreal is just trying to be Europe. They also have large USA style Dept stores. There are areas of the city that are nice, but that is about it.

As a performer myself, I would say that Toronto is a tough audience to please: not very welcoming, not very community-oriented, more just "everyone for themselves" kind of attutude. I never did get why the rest of Canada hates Toronto. In this day and age you would think that people are intelligent enough to realize that you don't hate a place with two million people strictly because your perception is that they think they are better than you. I moved to Toronto four years ago and while I love getting away from the bustle of a big city, I can say that no one I've met in the city even gives a thought to being better than the rest of Canada. Anyone I've talked to in T.O., thinks BC is beautiful, that The Peg has crazy fun people, that Prince Edward Island is beyond compare to anywhere else. I have friends that love to go to Montreal because of how great it is. They love the music festivals there.
The people who hate Toronto because they think we think we're better are just complete morons, stop thinking so much about what we think and try not to be so bloody judgmental.
