Montreal has better culture, restaurants, people, clubs, lounges, hockey, everything!
Toronto is safe, clean, friendly and public transit works really well. The weather is better than Mtl winter!
Yes, some ppl speak *very* highly of Toronto… thats cos they are proud, and in most cases they are right when they compare their expeirence in TO to their home city.
Give Toronto a chance, it only became a "big city" in the 70s, so it very new compared to NYC and MTL. I think thats whats great about it, it allows people to create their own Toronto. It allows people to be whoever they choose to be.
Toronto has a massive live music sence, and several music festivals, like the Virgin Festival in on the Island. Gay Pride is visible all year around, and the city really gets behind the parade. The arts culture is alive and well, just look at OCAD, the new AGO and ROM buildings as well as the funky Kensignton Market.
Rufus, if you really don't like TO, why do you work here and choose to have friends here?

someone who commented on this said that artists love toronto because it has "down to earth charm" or something like that. i grew up on the east coast and let me tell you, toronto is the grumpiest, bitchiest place i've ever been. don't get me wrong. i've met some lovely people there and had some great times, but the general opinion that i've formed living in toronto for the past 3 years is that toronto fancies itself the centre of the universe. montreal suits my tastes much more, but if anyone is looking for real, wholesome, down-to-earth canadian charm, you ought to hit up the maritimes. east coast forever.

Toronto is a changing city. 10 years ago it was a little more bland but it is always growing and changing. I have been there several times and every time I go I find a new area to explore. Toronto really is diverse in many ways. The first time I went I hated it, the second time I went I loved it. The third time I decided I was taking my money and moving there!! There is lots to do there, it really does depend on where you go and what you see. It doesn't all jump out at you, and no, it is not New York but I sure met a lot of former New Yorkers that are now living there, and they love it!

I've lived in Toronto for my entire life until I moved to Ottawa last year. I agree with Rufus Toronto is pretty shitty. I wouldn't say I hate it but there's really nothing special about it even for tourists. I know dowtown Ottawa isn't as big as Toronto but at least it has some individuality to it.

i grew up in toronto, but have been living in new brunswick for the past 18 years. i DREAD when i have to go back to TO for *anything*. the inhabitants think they are the center of the universe and that their shit doesn't stink. always too busy trying to make their money so they can escape to cottage country every weekend, dragging their shitty self-serving attitudes with them. it's an ok place to visit, but fuck i'd never live there again.
on the other hand, montreal is awesome, a great party city, and i always have a good time there. i can't wait to go this summer. it's a much more laid back city, way more of a chill vibe than TO has. in TO everyone seems to be rushing to get where they're going, and god forbid if you say "hi" to a passing stranger, they'll look at you like you're some kind of freak. hell just watch most of the home shows on HGTV and you can get a feel for how pretentious torontonians are, because they're all produced up there and the hosts all think they're god's gift to design.

This said, Montreal is THE city for me to live in! it's cool, lots of friendly people, great restaurants and places to go! i'm really biaised on this. I LOVE Toronto to visit, but would never live there…..same for Vancouver. I'm a lover of the smaller, cooler cities like Nelson (BC), Halifax(NS), St. John's (NL) and maybe even Waterloo(ON).

First, you let that idiot's comment turn this place into a war to see which places are better, then people want to go on about how Toronto's shit. I've lived here nearly all my life and I love it. It isn't trying to be like New York at all, and anyone who thinks that is completely ignorant. It's its own city, with its own purpose. You can THINK that all you want, but it won't make it true. So get the hell over yourselves. Sure, the place has its ups and downs, as does EVERY city. I've been to New York AND Montreal. First off, New Yorkers are MUCH colder than anyone in Toronto, and the city's completely chaotic - the traffic is insane and the noise is deafeningly infuriating. Montreal… while it's a lot cleaner and much more fashionable, a LOT of the people are VERY rude to those who can't speak french. They're self-obsessed. Toronto has its flaws just the same. It seems to me that everyone is making assumptions and general comments that don't necessarily hold true. Every city has negative and positive aspects and to say that a city is any one thing is just dumb. If he prefers Montreal to Toronto that's one thing but to say that the whole city is full of people trying to be New Yorkers is a disservice to one third the population of the entire country (yes, that's how many people live in TO) and not because there's anything wrong with being a New Yorker. There is, unfortunately, a strong sense of negativity towards Toronto and those who live there which resides in most of the rest of the country. I have been all over and have met many wonderful people who are surprised to know that I'm from Toronto because I don't conform to what they believe Torontonians must be like. It's really too bad that we have to put up with this kind of junk when if you were to ask most people on the street in Toronto they would tell you they've been to places like Montreal, Vancouver or Winnipeg and they enjoyed themselves. I really hope that the people on this message board are just sounding off and aren't really as ignorant as they are making themselves seem…because if they are our country is really in trouble :S

I don't like living in Toronto, but only because it's a big city and I am not a big city girl. I am planning to move to the west coast–Victoria. I think I like the slow vibe better. Anyway, in regards to Toronto and Montreal, or in defense of T.O.–AND its trying to be NY, Toronto has to compete against many Anglo-cultured cities in North America, especially NY which is bigger and more vibrant. Montreal (Quebec) is the only Franco-cultured region in North America, and Montreal is by default the Paris of the new world. It doesn't have to compete with Anglo-cities, bc it's unique. It has no competition from other Franco-cities, except for Quebec City, but that's still Quebec.

I do not lack any respect to anyone nor did I say anything about all the rambling you mentioned. I simply said that there were way too many pro-TO people saying stupidities without having stepped outside of their city. Sort of like a 'my dad is stronger than your dad' attitude. I have been around the world and have enough cultural and historical understanding of cities to formulate an educated as well as personal opinion of where I enjoy going. Every city has its pros & cons, including MTL. In the end though, I think we should all agree that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything. Just reading these comments is enough energy wasted. And, actually yes, I've been to Kleinburg.

I've lived here my whole life - albeit that's not very long - but there are great people here! Sure, there's assholes but aren't there assholes in every other city as well? Hey skye, I too live in MTL, Dorval actually… And I would never live downtown simply for the reasons you described. However, that is where most of MTL's charm is, so it really is a personal preference. You are right in saying that every city has its pros & cons and I am fully aware of that - just didn't squeeze that part in, my comment was getting longer and longer! First of all Montreal has more of a European feel, they have tons of festivals…ones where you can drink outside. we have a spectacular nightlife…T.O., the clubs are open till 1 am or 2am, but in MTL it's open till 3 am. We don't ave huge higways ruuning through our city either…we have the F1 grand prix
I live in Toronto and see this a lot from the rest of Canada. Yes, there are cities in Canada that are great and that are also not Toronto (Montreal is an awesome city) but there's really no reason to call Toronto crap just because you favour other cities. As somebody born in T.O. it's really insulting to have people automatically hate me and shit all over my hometown for seemingly no reason.
