Study: 1 in 4 adults in NYC have herpes virus
A city Health Department study finds that more than a fourth of adult New Yorkers are infected with the virus that causes genital herpes.
The study, released Monday, says about 26 percent of New York City adults have genital herpes, compared to about 19 percent nationwide.
The department says genital herpes can double a person's risk for contracting HIV.
Herpes can cause painful sores, but most people have no recognizable symptoms.
Among New Yorkers, the herpes rate is higher among women, black people and gay men.
The health department urges consistent use of condoms, and says its STD clinics offer free, confidential herpes testing.

Thank you for changing the post. As someone with herpes it did hurt to see the slut comment. Just because I came in contact with a slut doesn't mean I am one. An amazing number of people have it- and not everyone who has it got it from a partner. A friend of mine got it from her father as a baby, who was shedding the virus when he would kiss her on the cheek.

Re: Kryst – actually the article says that they are talking about the virus that causes genital herpes. if they had been talking about both HSV1(genital) and HSV2 (oral) then the percentage probably would have been around 80%.

There is HSV-I ( oral Herpes) and then there is HSV2 ( genital herpes) yes , when you have HSV1, you can also get HSV-1 in your genitals.

I got tested last week and came up negative. When and if you get tested make sure its the Western Blot. results are 99.9% accurate .

Actually… 1 out of 4 people in the WHOLE UNITED STATES have herpes simplex 2 (genital) and 3 out of 4 people have herpes simplex 1 (facial). 80% don't even know they have it…. GET TESTED PEOPLE!!!!!!!!
I've never heard of any tests that can show whether or not a person carries the virus that causes genital herpes, but I'd assume it's rather rare not to have it. If you've ever had a cold sore or were susceptible to chicken pox you likely carry it, but only the sores are contagious. I'd assume something like 75-90% of people carry the virus related to cold sores. Even if you've never have one, it carries from parent to child I'm fairly sure.
This article however if you read it IS referring to genital herpes, they just did not word it wisely.

Re: Rose – There are specific tests for Herpes. They are not included in standard STD testing or in HIV/Syphillis blood tests. A doctor can determine you have Herpes if you are having an active outbreak or if you REQUEST to be tested for Herpes and I believe there is also a test to determine between types. HSV1 is Oral and HSV2 is usually genital but both can be transferred to mouth or genitals. The article says "genital herpes" and I believe they are referring to location, not virus type.
Cold sores, genital herpes, mono, chicken pox and shingles are all forms of the Herpes virus. Once you've had chicken pox it can later manifest itself into Shingles (Herpes Zoster) and this actually occurs very commonly in elderly people. Herpes viruses or so common in human beings that coral reefs are now infected due to sewer water that eventually ends back up in the oceans. Herpes viruses in one form or another are inevitable.

I'm a 31 year old woman who just contracted herpes last weekend. We used a condom, but he gave it to me by going down on me (for literally no more than about 10 seconds before I pulled his lame ass head up because it was such an unimpressive attempt). Even worse than suffering through 10 seconds of bad head, now I'm one of the GROWING 25% statistic of women who will carry this virus for the rest of my life. If so many f*cktards weren't perpetuating the myth that coldsores (HSV-1) are no big deal and somehow different from herpes, I wouldn't have gotten it.
There's really no difference between HSV-1 (cold sores) and HSV-2 (genital herpes) because they can be spread to either place on the body. So, you can end up with genital HSV-1 or oral HSV-2 and vice versa. I didn't know this. He didn't know this. And I bet **you** did not know this. COLDSORES ARE HERPES!!! A big part of why this virus is spreading so rampantly is due to the fact that people don't know the facts.

gay male here. partnered ONCE - my ex had mouth cold sore and went down on me and gave me herpes. it was very upsetting because it was in the context of a very long term relationship. it was even more upsetting because he denied he gave it to me. oh well, i've moved on, the fat fuck isn't in my life anymore and i rarely have symptoms or outbreaks. social stigma is the only real negative when it comes to herpes. the immaturity on this board is staggering.

I am a 23 year old woman who contracted herpes during a sexual assault. I don't remember what I thought about STDs before I contracted herpes, but now I know that every time I read headlines like this it makes me feel disgusting. It doesn't matter if you catch an STD: through a sexual assault, through a long term relationship, a one night stand, or even if you have no idea where you contracted it from. It's a nightmare. It robs you of your life and of your sexuality. Before you have it you don't notice, but for the past two years not only has dealing with the assault had an inexplicable impact on my life (which I won't go into here), but as a result of the herpes I can't even turn on the TV or read a blog without somebody talking about the disgusting people with herpes.
It makes me sad.
It's also sad that my having herpes will probably have a deeper impact on my life than my attacker's conviction will have on his.

Getting over a sexual assault is hard enough, let alone one that leaves you with a chronic genital infection. I don't remember what I thought of STIs before I contracted herpes, but I hope I would have never judged anybody harshly. It doesn't matter how you contract the infection: through sexual assault, a long term relationship a one night stand, or you don't know how you contracted, nobody deserves this kind of judgment. It has robbed me of my sexuality, and I don't attempt to date because all I can think about is the potential look on their face when I tell them that I have gential HSV1.
What's hard too is that I can't turn on my TV or read a blog without the judgment being there.
So, this is my advise, don't worry about judging people with herpes or anything else. Don't worry people have it hard enough with out your God damn judgment.

I Raped and I got Herpes from that. Now everytime I date someone I am terrified to tell them that I am defected. Not only do I have the horrible memories of being raped. I have to deal with the Stigma of being a slut, being dirty and everytime I tell someone it's like being raped again. This happened to me and it sickins me how closed minded people are about this. It is such a common thing and if people use these stigmas thats what causes the spread of this disease. I'm ok dying a spinister but you know what if someone dumps me because I have herpes it's their loss because I have a lot to fucking offer.

no Kryst, they do mean type 2 genital herpes. 20% of the population in most areas has it, but most don't know because they don't have any symptoms, and it is not included in regular STD screenings unless specifically requested. An ADDITIONAL 60% of people have type 1 oral herpes ("cold sores"). and an additional amount on top of that has type 1 genitally (because cold sore + oral sex = type 1 genital herpes. suprise!) So, around 80% of the population has the herpes virus, whether oral or gential. if you don't have it, you're in the minority.

That was 2 years ago, and we are still together and working with it. Wow. I really liked this site. Daily visitor. Not so much anymore. I'd rather read through a blog where someone can tease and joke, and knows when enough is enough. It just blows me away that someone with as much power over young people and so much influence with his opinion would actually make fun of a disease like this. I know a handful of people with the virus, and NONE of them are sluts. Just very unfortunate. And you can get it with condoms. The next time you want to call someone a slut for getting herpes, look in the mirror, asshole. Anyone who has sex is prone to it. Protected or NOT.

80% of the population has type 1 (usually oral) and 25% of the population has type 2 (usually genital). Only 10% of people with genital herpes know they have it because they are either asymptomatic or their symptoms are very mild. The raging blisters that you see in pictures on the internet happen in very rare cases. Condoms only provide about 60 to 70% protection against the disease since herpes is transmitted via skin-to-skin contact. This is not just in NYC. These are the stats for the entire US.

By reading the posts, the people who are forthcoming about having Herpes sound far more intelligent and educated than the people spewing hate and ignorance about such a common and essentially harmless virus. I bet the people behind the nasty comments have never even been tested for Herpes so they can't say for sure they don't have it. They probably aren't responsible enough to take an HIV test either. The hateful comments are in the minority so that says alot about how this prevalent virus is slowly but surely becoming destigmatized. It's too common not to be.
