white people are funny. i read these comments and all of you are saying the same shit…"all black people do is talk about the past and hatred and negativity and slavery." well white people, we talk about the shit because its alive and well in our daily life. when shit like jena 6, sam bell, and police brutality are STILL happening as recent as 2008 then racism is alive and well. you bastards got it so good you don't even know the injustice going on right under your fuc*in noses. *smh* good post perez. i thought the video was very powerful…to anyone over 25 that is. these kids don't know the history. thanks again perez. you're cool with me.

Are you kidding with this garbage? Let's put some more credits up for this "mini" film! Was this "produced" to make a statement………? It actually made me feel stupid. If NAS thinks he's an artist… he would realize that subtle statements always make a deeper impact.

As oppossed to taking a life? OR perhaps encouraging others to?

Yes racism is very prevalent. Agreed.

However, encouraging violence as a solution is well beyond the ignorance that fuels racism. Fact. Whatever Nas was attempting here went way over his head.

I just am happy to see a rapper sing about something important rather than hearing another song about his dick or about getting high.
Atleast he's putting thought, creativity and important issues from the past and present to sing about. Nas has always been a rapper who talks about world issues and thats what sets him apart.
    :-D

    Re: noy

What is your problem. I know that there is anonymity in posting comments on this site and completely aside from this video how dare you say anything about black people not having talent and you hope someone will get aids? Obviously racist assholes like your self only encourage reactions to horrific comments and I was going to ignore it and not feed into your bullshit but i hope you know that hiding behind a computer and posting racist comments is a passive way to spew hatred and insight attention that you never get in your real life. I'm sure you are a tiny nerd with a small dick who will never get far in your life and spends their time posting hateful slurs online. You will never go anywhere

  17. 117

I find this so ironic. When I was getting called the "white bitch" in school and having people showing up to my door to jump me, it didn't call for the zero-tolerance rule because racism against whites doesn't count. Or what about how all my minority friends got to go to school for free (AND THEN ALL DROPPED OUT) while I was getting straight A's and not getting any financial aid? These are my fucking neighbors, so it's not like we're in different social classes. How come I had to grow up feeling ashamed to be white, because it was fucking undesirable in my area, and still have to listen to other people bitch about MY people holding THEM down?

    Re: Kia

I'm a woman, A black woman, i didn't choose my race either and I'm sick of the residual effects that years of dehumanization and institutionalization has Blacks.

the end. I wish i could look in popular magazines and see people like me and be thought of as beautiful. I wish i could be born into a house with both parents instead of houses with rats in it and neighborhoods where i'm afraid to step outside. I wish i didn't have to worry about what ppl think about my brothers, how it's a given that some people will still cross the street as long as it's a Black male.

The mater of fact is that slavery lasted a long time and it permanently shaped the status of Blacks and that's the damn fact.

  19. bullsh says – reply to this

    119

Re: Myzaree – you grow up ashamed to be white, that just sucks for you. The majority of the US population is white. Minorities are underrepresented everywhere including colleges.

it's a shame you have to pay full tuition when like only a handful of Blacks ever get the opportunity to go to college, damn at least they're allowed now. Damn forget all the time they weren't allowed to educate themselves.

With the education you're supposedly getting now, you should remember history.

  20. Belle says – reply to this

    120

Wow.. some of your comments are baffling. I mean, read Peggy McIntosh's "White Privilege and Male Privilege." Nas can not be racist, being that he does not have the power and privilege of White people to be racist. All black people do not think about slavery all day, we think about how our culture is so sought after from people of all races and ethnicities. Dig that!

I find it so strange that people come from all corners of the world to America with nothing and they make wonderful lives for themselves. Blacks are their own worst enemies. If you removed all the white people from the US they would still be a mess. I never owned a slave. No one in my family ever owned a slave. I have no intention of ever owning a slave. Give it up already. Unless you are a direct victim of racial hatred then you are responsible for your own life - good or bad. Don't blame nobody. Look in the mirror and make your own change and please for the love of God , please don't shoot me or my family. Thank you.

    Re: neithe

wake up. your life in houses like that is NOT BECAUSE YOU'RE BLACK. it's because you were raised in POVERTY. i am white and have been there. so don't blame all your downfalls in life on your race. you have access to public education, community college, and black scholarships. if you want something bad enough you will fight for it the right way. overcome your hardships just like the rest of us and stop crying victim.

oh and yeah, if i saw nas or someone that looked like nas crossing the street (black or white) i would avoid him. if i saw a black gentleman, dressed in respectable attire crossing the street- no problem. so you can blame people like nas for reflecting poorly on the black community.

    Re: cracka
You are right "cracka". Just because slavery no longer exists doesn't mean racism has ended people.
And all of you white people who are "tired of always being reminded that youre white" etc etc, get over yourself. You know damn well that hearing this song is the first time in a long time that you were reminded that you are white. Most of you go through your entire day not being reminded you are white because you are surrounded only by white people in your malls, on tv, in your fancy schools, and in your universities. This song bothers you because you are suddenly confronted with the fact that perhaps you didn't earn everything you have all by yourself, but perhaps inherited and gain many of your privileges (and avoid being harassed or shot by the police for example) because you are white. Of course not all white people are privileged and to claim that they are is also ignorant, but Nas is not doing that in this song. Instead he's demonstrating the hardships black people have gone through and continue to go through today. If that makes you suddenly angry because it points out you are white, well then check yourself.

You try to make the point that black people have nothing to complain about, saying "unless you are a direct victim of racial hatred then you are responsible for your own life" and a couple of sentences later make a fucking racist comment ("and please for the love of God , please don't shoot me or my family"). You want to say racism no longer exists and then turn around and direct a racist comment at black people? Stupid asshole.

I love white people overall. They usually have nice spirits and they have money which is great! They're relaxed and fun. And the truth is we don't hate blacks we just stay away from people that commit crimes. That's a real no no to white people. We don't accept it from our own and suggest you don't ever accept it from yours. Don't forget to use your sunscreen peeps! Peace. Btw I love black people that seek out white friends. The world is a smaller place now thanks to the internet, to the abundance of travel opportunities and to the mindsets of BILLIONS changing. Don't sit and say that you are locked into a roll based on the color of your skin, otherwise you invalidate the sacrifices of the real people that lost their lives to give you the opportunities to excel and become more than a pawn of white men. 159

The N word is wrong. Its been used to persecute black people for hundred and years, why would any one to stand up and be proud of calling themselves that, not because its made in referance to black people, but because its a word that has been used to put black people down and insult them for hundreds of years…its not a 'black' word, not a word historically used as self discription by black people, IT IS AN INSULT and an insult that someone as high profile as Nas should not know the history of the word, or the meaning behind it. its disgusting. this song, although powerful, is a step in the wrong direction. I am sad that Nas feels that all racism is down to persecution from 'white' people. I hate racism with a passion, and am a follower of Martin Luthor King Jr.'s school of thought- a want for a world of equality, where RACE IS NOT AN ISSUE WE ARE ALL OF THE HUMAN RACE. This is a song straight out of the early malcolm X school of thought - black supremicy. Being angry about race should make you want to make all races equal, otherwise you are just trading up one racist view for another. If you think racism is wrong, you think it is wrong, end of. Racsim should not happen. ever.

    Brilliant piece of social commentary.

if these were not still relevant issues then there would be no need for for discourse on these topics, Americans have a very short memory where socialinjustice is concerned (hello, Jena 6 anyone?).

What I find interesting is that in Europe, and particularly the former Hapsburg Empire now known as the Federal Republic of Germany is that no one would EVER DARE suggest the enslavement and anihilation of European Jews is something that they should simply get over and move on with. Yetamericans are quick to brush any unpleasantness from out bloody and brutal history under the rug. How ironic that as a black I feel safer and less targeted in the former hotbed location of World War 2 than I ever have felt in the United States. I know people didn't understand the song when it first leaked.Hopefully in seeing the video it might lead tto meaningful discourse.

I am an educated black woman and I myself get disappointed with those of my race that use slavery as an excuse for not working harder to improve their lot in life. However, let's be clear on one thing….THE BLACK RACE DOES SUFFER A LEARNED OPPRESSIVE STATE DUE TO SLAVERY, LYNCHINGS, AND JIM CROW. It is delusional to think that hundreds of years of oppression will be healed from the psyche n only 40 years! Many influential whites have had inheritances of wealth and esteem over the years so of course they feel pretty damn good about themselves. Now, consider the "inheritance" that has been handed down to the blacks. My grandmother was born in 1923 and is still alive. What do you think her emotional "inheritance" to me is? What do you think her emotional "inheritance" from her grandmother was?

    WOW !!!
    What a genius!
Such rhythm, and oh, the words, so original and fresh.
    What a dumb —–!
What does one say about a song that greatly erodes at the progress this country has made regarding equal rights for all?
Yes, this guy may be rich now, and can say whatever he wants.
But for the average working minority, things like EEO and such, have greatly empowered these people.
I'm tired of having this white-guilt shit thrown at me every fucking day!
Does this guy really think that there is some top group of white people wearing white sheets, that are controlling, or keeping his people down?
    Wake up ASSHOLE!
Any of the successful white people I know got there the hard way, they worked hard every day and earned it!
Just as you profess to have done!
When in all actuality, all you probably have done was a couple of quick moves here and there on the street corner, got lucky, got discovered by somebody, and now get paid a shit-load to spew your sorry ass racist rhymes.

Heres a news flash: The White Man is becoming the minority very quickly in this country, as are Americans in general.
Take a good look around any big city NY, Miami, LA (all of Cali), and you will see that Spanish is becoming the standard language of this country!
So, who are you gonna blame for all your underachievers, once Whitey is the minority?
Rather than beating a dead horse, teaching your young fans to look for hand-outs, reparations, and a free 3 acres, why don't you preach to them that it's time to wake up, get off the welfare check, get an education, good job, and move the fuck out of the ghetto!
And, oh yea, tell your peeps to stop smoking crack while your at it!
I think the great Rev. King would be disgusted at how you throw the N word around, and you gansta rappers continually bring your people down.
If anything, I think you rappers are working for the man, and encouraging violence and drug use among your people.
You Sir, are a truly untalented, albeit lucky, piece of shit!
And oh yea, your lyrics??? Ummm… does anyone know old-school NWA???
    Niggaz4life (1991)…. enough said.
    How un-original.
    You suck dude!

You know, I'll stop being racist when I go to the grocery store and I don't see a black woman with a Coach bag and her kid in Nike's and she's paying for groceries with Food Stamps. I see it ALL THE TIME, and it's hard not to be bitter about it. I know not all black people are like that, but where I live, A LOT of them are. And it gives the rest of the decent, hardworking people (of any color) a bad name.
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Hey Christ, when all of the rich white owned corporations get off welfare that the government gives them to stay afloat while they continue to live in mansions and fly in private jets then it will be okay for you to make your assessment. When they stop allowing all those women in the FLDS compound to stop receiving welfare just because they want to live their lifestyle behind compound walls, again you can make your assessment. In the mean time…ssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

First, amen, #22, and let me state now that I'm black, as well. PC and all. Oh, and this is going to be really, really, long. Now.

This video touched me. I agree that racism isn't dead, it's just been swept under the rug; and now the corner of the rug keeps curling back in the heat of today's bullshit. :-D Pretty good, no?

That said, how many of these rappers are doing more than writing a rap about it, to make money off of a different audience than the people who will accept nonsense over a hot beat, and then going back to their mansion and fucking their 5 whores before caressing their "bling"? I love NaS for what he's trying to say, and granted, he sails off on his yacht with Kelis instead of 5 groupies, but it's the same. I agree that we need to get off our ass, as a community, realize that we deserve as much as anyone else, and stop being proud of our squalor. Don't be celebrate your nothing; we didn't choose to have ghettos and crime initially, don't embrace it now! We are as good as EVERYONE ELSE.

    190

Because this is 2008, most "role models" for males in the black community send messages like "Fuck school! I'm rich, and I did it by selling drugs and fucking bitches and killing! Because we have no choice, so embrace it! Be the best dealer you can be! And fuck other people; don't help anyone else with what you have. Just flash it in their faces, and then roll around in it, and spend it on bullshit that will ba taken away from you later, because you dont have money anymore, because you spent it on cars and a necklace. Sell more drugs! Kill more people! You're hardcore for it!"

BLACK WOMEN: IT IS NOT CUTE TO BE A HOE! Please don't laugh and applaud when your 5 year old little girl starts bouncing her ass along with a music video, and then wonder why she's pregnant at 14. Everyone got mad at Bill Cosby for telling them the fucking truth to their face. Swallow your pride and move up. And the fact that "up" and "better" and "educated" means "white" to many black people, is a problem in itself. Once you, YOU, also realize that you are no different than white people, you won't have to trip over "trying to be white" i.e. getting an education. You're entitled to it, as well.

Re: open y – oh give me a break–poor people (whatever color or race or religion) can go to school for free - -live for free –get food for free–the only people who are racist are the ones who get everything and complain about it - -and seriously NAS- -is living in his mansion with his aston martin and crying that the whites are holding him down–stupid

    192

But NaS's message is not a conspiracy theory, to place blame, either. I know white people feel like black people hang on to the past as an excuse to do less. You've made that clear. BUT, white people need to realize this: AS OF ABOUT 40 YEARS AGO, YOU'RE GRANDPARENTS AND UNCLES AND AUNTS WERE STILL DRAGGING US FROM PICKUP TRUCKS AND HANGING US FROM TREES AND DENYING US JOBS, AND NOT LETTING US USE THE SAME DOOR AS YOU, AND SENDING US TO JAIL OR KILLING US FOR LOOKING YOU IN THE EYE, OR EVEN JUST IN THE DIRECTION OF SOMEONE THAT WAS WHITE!!! 1950's-60's!! Even early '70's Don't wait till Feb., look it up. This shit didn't end that long ago!! Yeah, it's still fresh in our minds. My mother has a cigarette burn on her arm from a sit-in she participated in when she was about my age. My mother! How am I supposed to be removed from that?

  93. B says – reply to this

    193

The sense of entitlement white people tend to be raised with is as much the problem as the sense of inferiority black people tend to be raised with. If you look deeper, I think white people get so annoyed with black people, because they genuinely believe they are special because of their race, and don't understand why black people won't just fade in to the background and take the crumbs thrown to them like they're supposed to. Other races do it; damn black people are so stubborn! Why can't they stop talking about slavery? Right? Well, because the underlying belief that black people are "less than" is still prevelent. Just because you'll cough up $6.25/hr at McDonalds and hire some inner city kids, doesn't mean you feel that african-americans are equal to you. This is 2008; minimum wage pretty much leaves people in the same kind of shacks and squalor that slavery did. Go visit the south sometime so you can see what I mean.

I DARE a white person to admit this to themselves. SO proud of not being racist, as you want us to shut the fuck up about the struggles our community faces, because you don't care. My point is this: if communities of white people were suffering around you the way black people are, you would do something about it to help. Remember "A Time To Kill", and Matther Macona… I don't know/care how to spell his last name, making that speech about the little girl being attacked? The jury only got it when he said "now imagine she was white". Lightbulb! Black people are, wait for it… PEOPLE too! ::slow clap for the revelation:: Then, if you cared anything about basic human rights that EVERYONE is entitled to, you'd see how wrong you are. THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE LESS PIGMENT THAN OTHER PEOPLE DOES NOT MAKE YOU SUPERIOR! We still bring up slavery, because it was terrible. The Constitution still describes black people as 3/5 human. It's been amended of course, but it's still there, and as far as the course of history, slavery was recent! It just ended near the beginning of the last century!

  95. B says – reply to this

    195

White americans don't get sick of hearing about other tragedies of history. I never hear "oh my GOSH, will they STOP talking about Pharoh holding the hebrews as slaves? Geez, it's been thousands of years already!",(and I never got that: How did "good southern christians" justify slavery while reading in the Bible how wrong it is? Oh wait, that only applies to humans. Blacks are only 3/5 human, so it's ok. The constitution says so.) or "Can't they leave the Inqusition alone! Man, they stopped burning people didn't they? It's not a big deal!" But bring up something too close to home, too recent, that your ancestors probably participated in, whether they were "nice slave owners" or not, and it's "OH DAMN, STOP TALKING ABOUT THAT! IT'S OVER AND NOT MY FAULT! See, this is why we still hate you." Oh yeah, clean hands. Help these people out of all of the things you disapprove of then! If it's fixed, you won't have to complain about it. Oh wait, they're just black people, they're where they belong. Why can't they just stay there and be happy, right? No.
And DISCLAIMER: I'm using blanket statements to make a point. All white people aren't a certain way, all black people aren't a certain way, I know, I know. If I'm ripped apart about that, it means you couldn't find anything else wrong with my argument.
Ok, that's my rant for the day.

Oh yeah, why don’t you tell YOUR PEEPS if they wasn’t so busy following the money train and kissing ass for oil and paying more attention to what was going on in this country then English would still be the dominant language.
I think we all have it wrong and should pay closer attention to how the Latinos make moves because they are the ones making changes and running things. (j/k but you get the point right?)
