Shocking!!!
The LA Times says that when Grey's Anatomy's Katherine Heigl was asked why her name is not on the TV academy's list of Emmy contenders, she issued this statement:
I am truly grateful for the honor that the Academy bestowed upon me last year. I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the Academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention. In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials.
Some have said that Heigl's right on — her Grey's material did suck this year.
We don't watch the show. We wanna know…is she right and was this an 'honorable' thing for her to do cuz it leaves the field open to more 'deserving' actresses?
But, if she did have shitty material, was it right for her to call out the writers and show suits like she did?
Another theory is that she just forgot to submit her name for Emmy contention and she didn't want to admit it.
Does she think she's above the Emmys????

I don't think she was rude at all. She also wasn't calling out the writers. A lot of actors and actresses don't submit their work, but we don't hear about that simply because no one asks. They only ask if they expect someone will be on the ballot whose not. Oprah has stopped submitting herself for the talk show host in Daytime Emmys as well. Again though, the public only knows because she was asked about it. Honesty, he did the right thing and said it with dignity. Please give her a break. After all, with the strike, it was a pretty bad year for everyone.
I think she did the right thing. She has been an actress since about 1992 (and knows what it feels like not to be recognized for so long) and she finally got one of the most sought after awards last year. by removing her name this year she is allowing someone else to get the award of their dreams. I am a religious watcher of Grey's and she is correct her material this year (although performed well by her) was not as great as last season's. So why put yourself through the agony of being nominated and not winning. As far as calling out the Emmy people for nominating her in the first place. I don’t think that was her intention. Why try to make it something more than what it is. There is no need to read between the lines on this one. Her statement says it all.
I think she is right though, she didn't have any AWE wow or she deserves it moments and they kind of made her character a whinny baby… but I still love her and HONORABLE~!

Well done Katherine! The writers have screwed up her character over the last one and a half seasons and only now it's being sorted. She was at the top of her game at the end of season two but then the material she was given became poor. She is one of the most talented actresses around at the moment she deserves a good script. Well done her for speaking out and saying she doesn't deserve to be nominated. I don't think it has anything to do with wanting to leave why on earth would she have negotiated such a long contract. Lets face it, would she really have put herself through that messy negotiation last time?
She's telling the truth. Her story lines this year do not compare to her previous story line, but I do also think it is a dig at the writers. Now we know why she wants out of her contract!
Taking her name off the list meant that she knew she wouldn't win, and didn't want to be a loser. I would have done the same.
Classy. Her material on Grey's wasn't that great this year. She made a smart move if she felt her material wasn't deserving of an Emmy to give someone else a shot at it who had the material that was deserving of an Emmy.

True this wasn't great material for her character. However, she was recognized for her acting not for the script. She is just slapping the face of the Producers who helped make her a star and who have a contract with her that she wants to get out of.

I had the um, pleasure (?) of spending the evening w/her while she was on Roswell. She clearly felt above her role then, and she does now. She is absolutely not a kind person but whatever. She's a hottie, so who gives a shit?

I feel she did well in her statement. Grey's shat all over Izzie this season and I know that I kept asking after every episode 'Why are they giving so much shit to Izzie with no source of happiness?'

I think that's an awesome thing for her to do. I think it shows that she doesn't really care about awards as much as she cares about her work, and I think she's really cool to do something like that. Plus, her material this year was all right but not really good enough to win an Emmy, so it's good that someone else who would probably win it anyway will get a bigger push.
She's the real deal and honorable. I like that she smokes, too, and doesn't say PR perfected boringly manufactured comments. She's not perfect but gives the sense that she tries to be a good person and she and her mom have some kind of tight bond and there's a story behind that.
It wasnt a HORRIBLE season but I feel that she did the right thing. I don't think she was trying to be snotty or above anyone.
i am not a fan of Katherine Heigl but i do agree that her character was severly lacking in material this past season of grey's.i think she did the noble thing.overall the show has been going steadily downhill….

As b said, alot of actors have pulled their name for different reasons. They have won many times is one, like Oprah. The emmies are a popularity contest. If a show is the 'one', it gets awards for almost everything-I am waiting for best babysitter on the set, best caterer, best dump, etc. And they can't all being doing stuff that is better than anyone else in Hollywood. A show being a hit is a # of things, great publicity, both the public and critics liking it, etc. Maybe Heigl was doing it for herself, but, if she really felt she was not worthy(I don't watch the show), good for her. There are sooo many shows, actors, etc, in relationship to the actual # of awards. Maybe Hollywood will look at someone else.

i think that shes right. the writers gave her really bad material and she kind of didnt really do anything on the show. she just stood around and would talk to the other characters occasionally. i guess they are trying to get back at her for having an actual movie career!

grey's has gone FAR downhill since the end of the 2nd season. Heigl's character has become one of the most annoying on the show (and you can tell through her acting she doesnt even want to be there)… she would NOT have recieved a nomination anyway. So its probably a good thing shes calling out the writers because if they dont fix the show it will either be cancelled/lose other critical actors

I think she's is right on the money. She didn't have any good material really this year mainly b/c I heard she wants out of her contract. She had little airtime and not much plot to work with unlike her Denny SL. However, Ellen Pompero's performance this season warrant a nomination if not even a win. She stepped it up that's for sure. Heigl is not the first star to remove her name from nomination. Michelle Stanford, for CBS Daytime soap, Young and the Restless had done so on serveral occasions even when many have self she deserved a nod.
So good on Heigl for recongnizing her abilities and knowing when to step down.

I agree with her. The scripts form Grey's Anatomy this season were not so great. And I did watch most of the season. They could have done better with their story. Hope they will next season.

I think that her character on Grey's this season just wasn't the center of the show…there were other stories going on with other character's, and with at least 2 years of her character going thru so much drama, its only right to let someone else have their turn. I have heard she was trying to get out of her contract, because she's a big movie star now. i love her movies, but i don't think that puts her above the other cast members. also, i think that mentioning the writers may be a calculated move to see if they fire her so she can focus on her movie career. i do think she's talented, but I don't think her motives were necesarily out of honor.

Remember? She wanted off of the show. So instead of continuing her attempt to break her contract, she is snubbing the suits. If they aren't given the opportunity to be recognized or awarded for things written for her character then that character will more likely be given less lines, screen time and could be ultimately written out of the show. No legal dramz for her and they still have hold over the character.

I think she is right . I am a huge grey's anatomy fan and dont think her character was that great this season although she is a very good actress and played her character extremely good. I'M SO SHOCKED U DON'T WATCH IT :O anyway it's a great show but yet im still shocked that she would do that… who does that??( i didnt know you could do that) btw Knocked up was very sucky and gross and i wouldnt be surpprised if that lowered her "acting esteem" lol
