The LA Times says that when Grey's Anatomy's Katherine Heigl was asked why her name is not on the TV academy's list of Emmy contenders, she issued this statement:
I am truly grateful for the honor that the Academy bestowed upon me last year. I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the Academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention. In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials.
Some have said that Heigl's right on — her Grey's material did suck this year.
We don't watch the show. We wanna know…is she right and was this an 'honorable' thing for her to do cuz it leaves the field open to more 'deserving' actresses?
But, if she did have shitty material, was it right for her to call out the writers and show suits like she did?
Another theory is that she just forgot to submit her name for Emmy contention and she didn't want to admit it.
Does she think she's above the Emmys????

I think that she is off her rocker! this woman has been famous, like- we- know- your- name- not- just- your- face- famous, for a hot second. I would be okay with her statement, if she didnt have a history of bitting the hand that fed her.
Remember when the movie that made her, Knocked Up, came out? After the movie launched her on to a international stage, she was out giving interviews talking about how she didnt like the movie because it made women look like "shrews". If she doesn't like the stuff she is getting she should write her own or hold out for quality scripts that she can feel proud about.
As far as Grey's is concerned, she only has two more years on her contract, she should suffer in silence or else it will come back to haunt her if and when her movie career hits a rough patch. You cannot just talk shit about someone's work and not think they or their many, many friends wont commit it to memory, and opt for another moderately good acting, attractive blond when given the choice.
I have watched this show since day one. I have also liked Heigl since her My Father the Hero days and agree her material was not as good this year as last BUT I think this has more to do with her wanting off the show than being honorable.
she's pissed off becuz they didnt let her leave the show… she's obviously frustrated and this is her way of protesting… she's right… her character was very boring this season– she was the wallflower… I luv the show and would hate to see her go, but I understand were she's coming from.

I do agree with her…her story line this season wasnt as good as past. I dont think it was her calling anyone out, that is just how the story line went and there are so many characters that not every season can it be focused on the same one. I have never missed a Grey's Anatomy episode. Even after the writers strike. Nobody had good material and every episode was like watching the previous one. It always started out with Meredith in therapy and ended with George going off with his new intern friends. Boringgg. I think KH did the right thing, the episodes following the writers strike were terrible, and Grey's Anatomy sucked. Even though, I kept watching. That's what loyal fans do. The season finale, didn't suck as I thought it would though.
she probably felt uncomfortable imagining herself losing and decided it was not her year and of course giving it to a deserving actress who possibly may have never had the opportunity before is a very thoughtful decision to make- I think she is a nice person and not greedy for the limelight since she gets enough spotlight glare and i think her karma is now better secure for her decision
She is right about her material. It sucked this season. If I was Katherine Heigl, I would be very frustrated with what the writers were doing to my character, and maybe this is a good way for her to get that point across. Good for her!
I think she is RIGHT ON. Her season on Grey's sucked… Grey's sucked in general. And I think she is very smart to be trying to get out of Grey's ASAP, because it is definitely turned for the worse.
I don't think her saying that she didn't have the material was a dig at the writers at all. The show is an ensemble show, every character can't have a huge story line going on at the same time… Izzie had a major story line, somebody else had to have a turn. The only character that continuously has a major storyline is Meridith, and after all it is GREY'S anatomy.

I recall seeing some news awhile back that she was trying to get out of her Grey's contract because she wanted to take advantage of the movie rolls now while she was hot and was very limited to what she could take due to her TV schedule. I think this was her check mate and she is hoping by dissing them like this everyone will think she is classy and they will release her from her contract. Girlfriend is trying to play hardball.

john goodman did the same thing back in the 90's. he thought he had a bad season on rosanne and didn't want to be nominated.
so it's not unheard of.
My take on it is that she is looking for a one way ticket out of TV land and by associating herself with the Emmys it only leaves the door open for more of what she does not want and that is TV work.
I hate to say it but season 4 of grey's has gone downhill… Katherine is an awesome actress on the show but they haven't given her that great of a story line this year. The writers need to step it up now they are back working or else grey's is going to go down the tube! LU Perez!
They're right. Grey's Anatomy IN GENERAL was shitty this season. It should get no nominations.
If I were Katherine: an Emmy-winning actress on a "hit" T.V. show that had a season like Grey's…I would feel like a laughing stock if I ended up winning that Emmy. She is absolutely right: the season SUCKED, there was no material worth an award.
And the writers should absolutely be called out for that! I lost interest three episodes in, but picked up at the finale. For Heigl–better safe than sorry, better to maintain integrity in the face of uncertainty. I think she did the right and classy thing.
That was a bit bitchy of her. Yeah she wasn't given the best material but that what her character needed to go through. The writers do what is best for the show, not the actors, and that is TOTALLY justified. Her character did whatever she needed to do, and if she's above Grey's and the Emmy's then that's her problem.

Even if she did forget to submit her name she has a damn good cover up. The writers did a horrible job of the show. Everyone was a bad actor/actress until the last episode. I love her in everything EXCEPT for Grey's. I hate that character. I was relieved that I didnt have to see her go through that much on the show this year as it allowed me to enjoy the whole show for once. However with that being said I do believe it was the honorable thing as she didnt have a "dramatic" or eventful season so she is correct! She can be very classy.
i watch greys but i do NOT see how she won an emmy last year? I think it was very classy and honorable for her to do that. I think she's saying that she already got an Emmy, other people deserve it too. No use in getting another one for the same category. Due to the writer's strike, her character wasn't the strongest. It's nobody's fault in that area. This season was very rushed, they had to focus on 1 or 2 characters, not everyone like they usually do.

True, she wasn't given the material this past year. But I don't believe it's a reflection of the writers - I think it's because she's not that great of an actress. I really don't get the attraction to her - and I certainly don't see her as an actress that will last long in movies. She should thank her lucky stars for Grey's Anatomy, enjoy it while it lasts, and stop looking a gift horse in the mouth!!!
Amusing. Last year there was NO questions as to her honor when she defended Tr Knight. So why now? I prefer to believe that Ms. Heigell is sending a message to her producers. In addition there is a very good chance that she would win no matter what because she is "popular" and she knows that. I like her and I like her tenacity.

I really think you need to lay off Katherine Heigl. She has great potential. Even though Grey's, Knocked Up, or 27 dresses may have "made her".. they're not exactly pieces of art.
