This is exactly why there should be regulations of civil trial when criminal proceedings are being run simultaneously. It's what happened with Kobe Bryant — and it may have happened here. All civil settlements include a confidentiality clause (sometimes the "clause" is two pages long) … and there is often an "unspoken" agreement that the victim is not to cooperate with law enforcement.
As much as I think R Kelly is a sicko who needs to be shot in the head, there's no way the legal system shoudl be used to convict on the basis of a sex tape where the purported victim denies that it is them on the recording. You should not be able to use a criminal proceeding to re-victimize a person.
I can only hope that the law enforcement folks stalk R Kelly and bring him in for something else, as with OJ's B&E charges.

Oh, and whether or not he really was guilty, it doesn't necessarily mean he paid anybody off…it just means he had great lawyers that were able to make it to where the prosecution team couldn't prove him guilty…it's like this case I heard of about a guy who had a car accident with a fifteen year old…the guy was drunk at the time and the fifteen year old ended up dying. But the guy got off with a normal DUI sentence and $250,000 to help ease his little bit of time in jail. Why? Because his lawyer came up with the defense that if the fifteen year old wasn't driving illegally (he was on a permit and driving with another fifteen year old in the car) then he wouldn't have crashed into him and the kid wouldn't have died. The jury really couldn't fight that battle because they had a point…so after getting his DUI sentencing, they then in turn counter-sued the family for the damages done to his car and his bodily injury and stuff. So I say blame the lawyers for finding legal loopholes in stuff…that's what really kills a prosecutions case.

I'm tired of people saying our justice system is fucked up. It had nothing to do with how our justice system functions. It wasn't a technicality or anything like that. There was no mistake on the prosecution's part, there was no loophole that the defense attorney found. He was found not guilty by 12 of his PEERS. And I'm sorry, compared ot other justice systems in the world, which would you rather have again? That's what I thought. I work for law enforcement and it might not be perfect, it's DEFINITELY not perfect, but it's the best, most fair one out there. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that his $$$ or his celebrity had nothing to do with this… I'm sure it played a big part…but a jury found him not guilty. And to whomever said "they will appeal it"…uhm hi, prosecution can't appeal a not guilty verdict. What legal system are YOU thinking of?

Re: allie – Actually, criminal cases take precedent over civil cases in all courts in the united states. Once a case becomes a criminal case and has been indicted, the only way to get all the police reports, etc. (called "discovery" in the legal world) is to file a right to know request. And prosecution will not disclose that information until the criminal case is finished because of problems with witness contaimination and confidentiality stuff. They only stuff they would disclose to a civil attorney before a disposition was reached would be public documents such as indictments and orders/scheduling notices. Just an fyi.
