I think that it is so beautiful that these two women who have been together so long, have been able to finally get married. I think that it's a travesty that gays and lesbians have not been afforded the same rights as a heterosexual. And who cares about what the bible says. If the bible said to jump off a bridge would you crazy bible thumpers do it. Of course not. And God did not write the bible, nor did he create a religion where pedophiles can be priests but women who genuinely want to be priests are not allowed to do so. And at one point in history the church condoned prostitution which the bible also says is bad. Reading the comments, it seems like the opinions on this are split down the middle. I started crying the moment this started. I'm not a lesbian, but I have many gay and lesbian friends and can't imagine them not being able to marry the person they love for over 55 years! Del and Phylis don't have long left on this earth, but I am so happy they got to finally experience something that they should have been able to do from the beginning of their romance. With the divorce rate like it is today between hetro couples, couples like Del and Phylis give hope to those of us who want to make our marriages last. CONGRATS!!!

I'm so happy for these ladies. 55 years is amazing! That is love. Wheeling your loved one up to the cake to cut it is love. I hate the argument that marriage is between a man and woman only. My parents are married because my mom got pregnant with me. I've never seen them hug or kiss and have slept in seperate bedrooms my whole life. This led to a host of problems for both my brother and I. For instance, my mom blames me for her unhappiness. My parents are legally married because they were too stupid to use a condom! I don't understand why people care who is marrying who. You'll never change someone's sexual orientation, so why not let them enjoy in peace?
Congratulations to Del & Phyllis - you are an inspiration to ANYONE in a committed relationship to have made it this far together through all the trials and tribulations. My husband and I feel that the most important thing to teach a child is to love and be loved. Raising a family in California, I feel blessed that my child is witness to interracial relationships and homosexual relationships. It is not a confusing situation. If two people are truly in love, they get married. (And sometimes kiss!!!) Re: L – Your only reading what you want too.. I am not a gay basher… I never was and never am.. I can tell that your married WITHOUT children. Let me tell you what happens, let me prepare you. Your child, from when he or she is born, until he is a toddler, will see a MOMMY and a DADDY. They will see you guy kiss, hold hands, hug, cry, and show other emotions. They will start to understand that a woman is the MOMMY and a man is the DADDY. Therefore, while there still little, to the point where can't understand verbally what it's like for a couple to be gay, they will be confused when it is witnessed outside the home. You see, at a very young age children may not be able to understand what your saying, but they can tell what they're seeing. Again, when my children are old enough to fully understand why 2 people of the same sex are together, I will discuss fully, and certainly not at 3 yrs old..I'll tell you what, right me back when you have a child that is 3, and you take he/she to the park and you witness 2 guys kissing. Are you honestly gonna tell them that's ok? Are you going to sit your 3 yr old down and explain to them gay marriage, or gay relationships, at 3??? Looking through the eyes of a toddler, how can this not be confusing????

Re: cn – nope, sorry! All you can tell is that I am a married woman raising my toddler in CALIFORNIA, buddy. I have better things to worry about than my child bearing witness to a gay kiss. There are many different kids of families and many alternative lifestyles. My husband and I embrace and accept that.

Re: Get a – Right on! I was brought up to believe everyone was equal and deserved to have the same rights. I was also taught in my Catholic studies as a kid that our's is a God of love not hate and of course to live by the old adage of "do unto others as you would have done unto you." I wish the people of America would realize that America should be the greatest nation for people of any life style or back round to realize their dreams. This is the worlds melting pot and we need to live up to our countries values.
Re: cn – Children are very resilient and are far more understanding than adults. They are not going to be shocked by Dick and John kissing as you state. Studies show that gay couples tend to raise very smart, well loved children. Children who by the way don't care if they have two daddies or two mommies. It makes me think that children are smarted than adults. Read the literature if you are confused. And just reading your responses and those of anony makes me think that you are both to extremely uneducated people. You really need psychiatric help. And why do you read a gay man's blog for Christ's sake? That is the real question. Don't make people take their feelings behind closed doors. This isn't the dark ages.
Re: Jem – And also the children of hetero couples tend to be abused more often sexually, mentally and physically. Think about that. About the two men arrested for raping their own daughters and holding them captive. The hetero divorce rate accounts for the mass majority of children in psychoanalysis and in the care of foster families. These children are often abandoned. Just because hetero's can marry does not mean they should and I worry about the example you set for your own children. I know a few gays who are better people morally than you are.
Re: Jem – Your hilarious and obviously gay. You and "L" are dancing around the subject i'm saying. Here's the question… Would it confuse a 3 yr old to see 2 men kissing??? That is the question… I didn't say " Would the gay couple be better parents?" I didn't say "Are children smarter than adults?" (If you believe that, I think it's you that needs the evalution, moron!!)
And what does anything we've been talking about make you reference a gay man's blog?!?!?!? Or reading one for that matter……. Then you reference 2 men that raped there daughter…. 2 MEN.. Re: cn – I come from an old-school Italian family. We all kiss each other on the mouth. I don't think my nieces and nephews have ever been confused or damaged to see their pops kissing his old friends. I would have to think that the parents reaction to the kiss would make a significant difference. If you have tension or wierdness towards it, they will pick up on your cues.
Your child would be confused because you would overreact. That's your right as a father, but I agree with L and Jem that you need to teach tolerance to the little ones.
Re: tony – I appreciate your comments.. You make a valid point. That's something I can explain to my 3 yr old when he turns to me and says "Daddy, why are those 2 guys kissing?" I can say that's his daddy, or his brother. That's understandable. But again, what is the answer when it's obviously two gentlemen, that aren't family members in a public place. Should I lie??? Should I say it's family?? Do I tell him 2 boys can love each other??? I would definetly walk the other way to avoid that situation or I'd tell them to go somewhere private… I have a lot of people responding to my remarks, yet nobody can tell me what they would say/do in that situation. Tony, what would be your personal reaction. Do you allow your 3 yr old to study it??? Do you really let him think that's ok?
