AUSTIN – The Republican Party of Texas will donate to charity the $1,500 it received for leasing a booth at its state convention to a vendor who sold a racist button.
GOP spokesman Hans Klingler said the state party has been unsuccessful in trying to reach the vendor, Republicanmarket.com, who sold pins, scarves and other items last weekend.
So the party is sending a letter saying in “very strong terms” that he need not apply to sell items at any further state GOP events, Mr. Klingler said.
He said that the party, while approving the lease to the vendor, was unaware of offensive merchandise that was being sold there. One of the pins they were selling stated: “If Obama is president…Will we still call it the White House?”
The Dallas Morning News wrote about the pin being sold Saturday on its Trail Blazers blog and posted a picture of the pin. The story drew attention from several national news sites and blogs Tuesday and created a storm of reaction, particularly at Texas GOP headquarters.
The booth was leased by Jonathan Alcox of Florida. He could not be reached for comment.
The Republican Party is still determining which charity will receive its donation.
Mr. Klingler said he and party leaders believe the pin is distasteful and they hated that it was being sold at their event, which he said was upbeat and dedicated to unity.

To the comment below about outsourcing…who do you think companies are going to push the MUCH higher costs of keeping outsourced jobs in the US? To the consumer which is you and me. It may create more jobs for some, but it will affect MILLIONS of people in the increased prices of products and services. For example, the steel industry is not outsourced to foreign countries just in case a war breaks out and we will have the availability and know-how to build ships, planes etc… But those jobs cost the government about $525,000 per person to keep the steel industry going in the US!!! Outsourcing actually helps the economy of the world including us by saving us money. We want competitive markets…
