Toddler Found Wandering the Street Holding Beer Bottle
A 24-year old Jacksonville Beach woman is facing felony child neglect charges Thursday after police say neighbors found her two year old son wandering in the street wearing a soiled diaper carrying a beer bottle.
Jessica Nicole Hughes was arrested when she returned home after being contacted by police.
She was described as extremely intoxicated at the time of her arrest.
Authorities called Jax Beach Fire & Rescue to check on the little boy, who was bleeding from a piece of broken glass in his foot, and to be sure he hadn't consumed alcohol.
"Fortunately, it did not appear the child had ingested any alcohol," said Jax Beach Sergeant Thomas Bingham.
Police got a call from neighbors around 9 o'clock wednesday night. "Two neighbors call us saying, 'hey! There's this 2-year old child walking around… (with a ) soiled diaper, glass is in the bottom of his foot -walking around with a beer bottle," said Jacksonville Beach Police Public Information Officer Thomas Bingham.
According to police, the boy's mother, Jessica Hughes, said she dropped the child off at their apartment where her fiancee' was napping. She then went out.
The toddler's soon-to-be step-Dad told First Coast News little Caleb did what most two year olds do. He explored. "He has toys. He loves to climb. And you know Kids love to climb!" said Michael Edenfield.
"He climbed up, unlocked the door and the next thing you know he was out here!"
Mike Edenfield was awakened to neighbors and blue flashing lights to learn the toddler was out.
Police reached Mom on the phone and told her to come home.
"And when she came home, she was absolutely obliterated!" said Sgt. Bingham.
"(She was) Extremely intoxicated. Had difficulty standing. The investigation continued and the officers ended up arresting her for child abuse and child neglect."
Paramedics pulled a sliver of glass from the boys foot and determined that he had not consumed any alcohol.
The Department of Children And Families was called and an investigator went to the apartment on the 200 block of 10th Avenue North. The DCF determined the child was safe in the care of Edenfield while the boy's mother was taken to jail.
Caleb's soon-to-be stepfather is grateful the boy is unharmed, but says the arrest of his mother creates an instant hardship.
"It means now I can't work until I find a babysitter! And I don't have a babysitter so now that puts me behind on my rent. All my bills are going to get behind because of this little incident."
If convicted on the third degree felony charges, Hughes could be jailed for up to five years. Hughes is being held at the Duval County Jail on $5,000 bond.

Why is no one attacking the step dad who was supposed to be babysitting?
FIRST
wow. nice. GO MOM!
1.
she doesn't deserve a child
first?
another reason why the government should start sterilizing people… good job grossies…
The mom and the "soon to be" step dad are both fucking idiots
While I strongly disagree with what she did…. wasn't the child in the care of the fiance while all of this happened? I mean, technically, wasn't he the one who was acting negligent. Also, I am assuming that the beer bottle that the child had easy access to belonged to the fiance… I wasn't there but what I am assuming transpired was:
The mom dropped the child off at the fiance's apt and told him he was there. The the fiance cracked open his eyes, pretended to wake up, and then grunted, plopped back onto the couch, and fell back asleep after she left.
How is the child safer in his care?
Perzez should become a social worker with all these amazing social stories. Stick to celebrities fuck face.
5th!
take the fucking kid away. too many pieces of shit breeding. then their kids grow up to be pieces of shit just like them because they are scarred by incidents just like this, and thus the cycle continues.
She looks like she would shop at Wal-Mart
Um why wasn't the step dad carted off? This is why people should have to have licenses to reproduce so fucktards like this aren't making babies. Poor little guy
This makes me so mad! I feel so sorry for the kids of these ignorant people. They don't stand a chance…
that's so sad. i guess partying is more important that taking care of your children
Ugh! Why wasn't the person that was supposed to be watching the child arrested as well? That doesn't make any sense!!!!!!!!
Also, why were the fire department called instead of taking the boy to the hospital???? It "appeared" he didn't have any alcohol in his system!! Why weren't tests done to prove it!
He shouldn't be allowed back in that home, period!!!
WHAT A HOSE BEAST !!!
I can't believe the father wasn't shitfaced!
#1 because everyone is a drunk in Florida.
#2 Because he fathered a child with this PIG!
Perez, further investigation is needed, we need to see a picture of this Father of the Year!
Re: MissO –
well because he was sleeping when she just drop him off without telling him. maybe because since he was not aware that the child was in his charge then how can he be responsible.
WHAT AN IDIOT. SHE DESERVES TO HAVE HER CHILD TAKEN AWAY.
So you mean to say the mother drops off the kid at their appartment, with the "father figure" and went out to party and it is her fault?… what about the father figure?
Another case for mandatory steralization. Turn her upside down and fill her vagina with cement.
what a crackhead
ahh Jacksonvilles finest….
Re: MissO –
Maybe the mom who was drunk off her ass should have thought about who she was leaving her 2 year old with!!
How could someone who looks so much like Hurley be such a jerk?
Re: Ali – THATS TRUE. WHAY IS THE FATHER NOT BEING HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS TOO.
Dear Children having Babies,
If you still feel like you will be missing something by staying home, do not have a baby. If you only have fun when you're blind drunk, do not have a baby. If you are living from pay check to pay check, do not have a baby. Raising a kid is like being the CEO of the most important corporation of your life: huge investment, huge pay-off, everybody is watching. Grow up!
Gee….fat white trash, what a surprise. It leaves me wondering who srew that disgusting fat mess?
wow, the fiance sounds like a winner. This 'little incident' could've gotten that little boy killed! Fucking retards. And I dont think you need to just find a babysitter, you're gonna need to find a new mom for that poor kid.
its so sad when ppl have babies and don't really want them.
there are so many ppl out there who want kids but can't have them.
love you perez !
"It means now I can't work until I find a babysitter! And I don't have a babysitter so now that puts me behind on my rent. All my bills are going to get behind because of this little incident."
Oh poor him. Never mind what the child has gone through!
She looks the part
Uh? I don't get this. Her fiance was babysitting while she was out. He was in loco parentis. So why the hell has she been arrested? Why not the babysitter instead? Why go for the woman - who was on a night out and got pissed, as we all do - rather than the person she had arranged to look after her son?
Am I the only one to see a serious amount of hypocrisy and misogyny here?
Ummmm…shouldn't they be arresting the person who was supposed to be WATCHING the child? And then they decide its safe to put the kid in the care of the guy who let this all happen! Disgusting.
Im a bit confused about this as well. The mother went out, left the child in the care of someone she believed would watch him and went out… so she did what anyone else would do if they had a child and wanted to go out for an evening.
How is she getting in trouble again? Shouldnt this be put on the person [step-dad] watching the child? And why isnt he at all remorseful for you know… ignoring the child while he slipped out on the street with a beer bottle, shitting himself, and cutting his foot… kids will be kids but that is something that can be avoided with idk… a guardian present.
I hope she'll get punished. What a stupid and irresponsible woman.
Re: Chunk – If you read the article it states that she dropped the baby off when the guy was napping! Learn to read people. I mean I am sure he is not a gem, but this woman didn't cae that he wasn't even awake to watch him. Just so she could be a drunken whore! Reading Comprehension people!
The step dad is probably as irresponsible as her and I'm sure she knew it!
Now how did I know just by reading the headline and seeing her pic that this was gonna be a Florida story again? Damn, I gotta move, I'm embarassed for my home state.
Does anyone else think she looks like Hurley, the big dude on Lost?
stupid people shoudnt breed. moma left toddler with sleeping step dad!!!! why leave your kid with a sleeping person????? this boitch shouldnt have kids. some people have to work hard to have kids and this white trash whatever probley didnt even plan havin her child. all you 20 something year old chicks wait untill your done with your party years are done then have kids. like duh.
Another reason for good behaving mothers..lol…ppl should have to do a test before having children…just like when you want a licence…..PERFECT EXAMPLE…..nice.
some people should NEVER have children… EVER!
I work at JB and the father was asleep when the child was dropped off, he had no idea he was even there.
If she left the kid with the fiance, then why is the fact that she was drunk of any importance whatsoever? The fiance was the one looking after the kid.
If you've ever been to Jacksonville, FL, you would not find this surprising at all. That is the most redneck, trashy place in the entire country. Nothing but trailers, confederate flags and a bunch of beer-drinking NASCAR fans. NASTY!!
She did the responsable thing she found a babysitter(the financee) to watch the kid then went out to have some fun why isnt the step dad arrested for not watching him he was supposed to be in his care why does the mother automatically take the blame huh explain
Ha that was my mom! Naw not really but I want her to adopt me….
I live here in Jacksonville..The reason SHE is in jail and NOT HIM is… she brought him home and put him to bed WHILE her boyfriend was asleep. Then she left and went to party. She never woke up the boyfriend and told him that he is now watching the child and that she was leaving. He had no clue the child was even there.
Re: The G – Well, HE said he was napping when she dropped him off. What do you expect him to say, "I'm a giant dbag– you got me?" More likely he was half awake and then just went back to sleep after she left instead of actually watching this poor child. It seems highly unlikely that this mother would just open the door and throw the kid in there. If she was that irresponsible she wouldn't have bothered to have a babysitter at all.
Re: crazy – You sound just as dumb as this woman.
WHY IS EVERYONE HATING ON THE MAN?!?!?!? CAN YOU PEOPLE NOT READ?!?!?!?!?
It clearly states in the article that she dropped the boy off while the man was SLEEPING and then just left. It's obvious by the tone of the rest of the article that he's a twat but he didn't actually do anything wrong. You guys are all complete morons!!!!
Re: Autum – So this is the first totally silent two year old ever? Toddlers are LOUD, especially when they are bored and getting into mischief. This guy deserves more criticism. I highly doubt he had no idea the kid was there. He just didn't care.
Sorry, but IMO this is not the mom's fault.
I have a two yr old son 1. he is completely out of diapers and 2. even my son is smart enough to go outside alone
throw this disgusting woman away
He was in care of the idiot fiancee, BUT you don't drop a child off with someone who is SLEEPING!!!!! Idiot mom and fiancee. Don't deserve to have a kid!!!!!!!!!
Re: MissO – when you are sleeping would you be a good sitter, damn you are stoooooooooooooooopid
Re: crazy – Hey idiot. Where do you buy your toilet paper?? MACY"S???? get a life don't talk about people shopping at walmart
.
.
.
If this child had died because of this, It would have been the best thing for him.
-Rather than been raise by this pair of trash.
.
.
.
Re: nancy – He wasn't sleeping when she dropped him off. I'd bet moola. He's just saying that as an excuse for this whole red hot mess. Two year olds are LOUD, and there's no way he didn't know that kid was in that apartment.
little incident? this guys a douche. they should have that kid taken away from them
Definetly is the stepdads fault. If your babysitting you have to be awake duh. The mom was just having a night out. Totally not fair.
Re: ashle – While I commend you on your excellent potty training, not every child is ready to use the potty by 24 months, or even 36 or more… It is the wide spread opinion of pediatricians to not force a child to train when he is not ready. It sounds to me like A. you are bragging B. you are being overly critical of something that DOCTORS would disagree with you on. I do not think I would like to have you around me if you are the type of person who looks down on every parent whose child is not potty trained at the same time as yours. Snob.
How stupid….they return the child to the house where he wasnt paid any attention by his mother OR his step dad…..the judicial system is fucked….this makes me sad
..Poor kid
Re: taysh – LOL I actually get my toilet paper from duane reade… Theres no walmarts in NYC
kids will do this. especially if left up their own devices. the step dad is right in what he said… my neighbors kid does this…at 5:30, 6:00am when both parents are home and sleeping. are they worthless parents who don't deserve the pleasure and expense of raising a child?
the mom didn't do anything wrong, and I'm sure once they get over it, they're gonna let her go. she left the child in the care of another 'responsible' adult, and went to get her drink on. this sucks for the mom, and i'm thankful the child wasn't hurt. i think someone needs to tell these people about chain locks at the top of the door, thats what other parents do to keep the little rugrats from escaping.
as for people saying take the kid away, i hope that if you ever have a kid, and feel like having a drink, and leave your kid with your significant other, that this doesn't happen to you. otherwise, god forbid someone might think you are an unfit parent. and be hollering for someone to take your child away. parents need a break sometimes you know… are you judging her for going out drinking? I'm sure you or alot of folks you know and love do that same thing. does that make you an evil piec of trash who doesn't deserve children?
Re: MissO – i don't think he knew he was supposed to be babysitting. the lady dropped off the kid while the guy was sleeping.
Why in GODS name did the DFACS people LEAVE that baby with the idiot that was supposed to be watching it?
These two people have NO right to have kids. Just think if that child was given to a couple that would be overjoyed to have a baby to love and take care of.
Poor Kid! Makes me sad and pissed off.
Re: G.O.D. – You are sick….No child deserves to lose their life because of a bunch of trailer trash parents who dont give a fuck….Every child deserves a chance at life, even if they have terrible obstacles to overcome
They should have had a lock on the door high enough (even with a chair) that the child could not reach it. How can they say that the child is safe with the so called father figure? She probably told him she was going out…and he fell asleep….and 95% of men wouldnt hear a train right in front of them when their sleeping so you know he didnt know a child was going out the door. Did they check him to see if he was drunk also, just seems odd.
Re: MissO – You're probably right but not all two year olds are loud all the time. Keep in mind that the childs mother is a probably complete idiot and has never actually sat down and teach the little boy things. Whats the chances that the only way this kid was going to learn is by TV.
Same thing happened to me only my kids were older and we weren't out getting trashed. I had left my kids home alone for a few minutes for a trip to the bank with my fiance, got home and the cops had just gotten there, my youngest had opened the door for the cable guy. *I* and I alone got ticketed for child endangerment, they didn't even bother with my fiance. It's because us moms are responsible for our kiddos.
That said, this idiot left her son with a sleeping fiance to go get DRUNK. Awesome. They are both just fucking stupid.
Re: MissO – gee it said he was sleeping on the news…..and for all of you that say 2 year olds are loud,um,thats a stereotype, thats like saying all girls like pink….i have kids and they arent always loud, mine were quiet when they were around people that are sleeping, the thing is when you are a mom the kids are her responsibility, hes just some guy,and i bet there will be many more men in that kids life, moms a skank, she is the only one responsible here for what happened…..the guy is a skank,he called this a "little incident"
Re: MissO – Re: MissO – Re: MissO –
the reason the step dad isn't being charged is because he had no idea she dropped the kid off. he was sleeping and she slipped the kid into the apt and bailed.
Re: shede – That's what I thought! See comment #24. Maybe that's why she drinks.
How many mothers in this world go out and have a few margaritas or beers and leave their children with a babysitter, husband, or fiance? Anyone of these dependable people could fall asleep and something go wrong but that dosent mean that it is the mothers fault. I dont think it was all the mothers fault unless she didnt tell him the child was there.
Wow, what a fucking hick! He describes this as a "little incident" and he's going to get backed up on the rent because of it?!! That kid should permanently be removed from that home, she should be sterilized!!
Re: Me –
the fire department responds to 911 calls where someone might be hurt. that would be why they were there. obviously they knew that the child did not need to be taken to the hospital, but could be treated on site. also, they probably did a breathalizer on the child to see if he had consumed the alcohol. they say "appears" because there is no way to know for sure. im glad you focused on all of the least important parts of the story.
Re: ayeme – AMEN sister
Re: ayeme –
Just read what I wrote and now I sound like an idiot.
Excuse the crappy grammer
You should have to pass a mandatory test if you're going to reproduce. If you fail - Sterilization!
——————–
1. Should you leave your toddler unattended around beer bottles to go out and get shitfaced?
a. Yes
b. No
c. are you for fucking real?
Re: Garba –
I'm glad you don't like J'ville. With that kind of attitude, you woudn't be welcome anyway.
It's a nice city. Like all cities, it's what you make of it. We might beer rednecks who drink beer, watch nascar and live in trailers, but we know how to have a good time! (I bet you live on 'the compound', don't you?)
Sadly, like w/ ALL areas of this Country, the Mom in this situation will end up bailing out of jail, getting her kid back and next time it might not be as simple as a piece of glass in his foot. She's lucky he was found and not placed on the list of kids on the Amber Alert.
zzzzzzzzz I hate people and I wizhed they wouldn't have kidzzzzzz
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
ZTOP HAVING KIDZ ..U EFFERZ DON'T WANT…
hahaha!!! I live in jacksonville! hell. This doesnt surprise me!
Re: Potty – Well said! Thank you for getting that message out there…I concur!
mom left the baby in somebody's else care and she got arrested for it. that is not right.
now going out and getting piss ass drunk, that is wrong. i mean a beer here and there is fine and all, but when you have kids to come home to you don't do that.
Re: Ali – You weren't there. I bet the drunk ass mom dropped the kid off and didn't even wake up the fiance. He probably had no idea the kid was even there at any point. If he was drunk then, they wouldn't have left the kid with the stepdad, then the police would be liable. I'm sure they thought of the fact that it might have been his fault, and discovered- aha- it was the drunkass nasty mothers!
ok. so i live in jax beach and what you failed to mention is that the father had no idea the kid was there. the mom just dropped the kid off home and then left. and it isnt the first time she did it either.
dfd
Re: ashle –
not every child is ready to be potty trained my the age of 2. they say that by the age of 2 you should start introducing them to the potty. so, get off your high horse and realize not every kid is the same.
Re: MissO – How could the stepfather be babysitting if he was asleep when she dropped the kid off? Mom should've either stayed at home instead of heading to the bar to get trashed or found someone who was conscious and capable of caring for her child if getting trashed was that important to her!
SHE was the one guilty of neglect for leaving the child at home with the sleeping boyfriend then taking off! A sleeping person is not a good and responsible caregiver for a child.
I see, in this boys future, lots of involvement with Juvenile authorities.
Re: Garba –
dear garba. i live in jacksonville. i am not a redneck. i am not trash. i hate nascar. saying that everyone here is like that is like saying everyone in Miami is Cuban or everyone in Texas is Mexican. lets educate ourselves before we speak. Thanks.
this kind of person makes me want to puke!!!! when i looked at her picture i saw how disgusting of a human being she is, and she defiantly deserves to be in jail. too bad for the babe, that he had to end up being w/t such a peacse of shit of a mom!!!
unfortunatly this is not the first time I have herd of something like this. it makes me livid when people don't give a shit about their kids, when theres couples going through so much just because they want a baby.
Both should have been arrested and the child taken to Child Protective Services. In this day and age he is lucky to have simply cut his foot. My sis used to get out of the house during the night at about that age and go visit the neighbors. Once walking over a freshly varnished floor. Dad ended up putting a lock on the top of the door. That was about 50 years ago. A lot different from today.
I'm sorry, did he say "LITTLE incident?"
Why the hell did they arrest HER? She had left him in the care of the step-dad, and he dropped the ball - not her.
Little incident?
how in the world can they determine that the child is safe with the soon-to-be step-dad when that was whose care he was in the in the first place…..
mom dropped off child with STB step dad and this is what happens….
I think that shit that they think that the child is safe in the hands of the step-dad who wasn't watching him.
