The View From the Right

Filed under: Politik > Al Gore

algore.jpg

John Coleman, the founder of the Weather Channel who now works as an on-camera weatherman in San Diego, California,
spoke out last week to say that Al Gore and the United Nations' global warming claims are a bunch of baloney.

From founder of a network to weatherman? Kinda sounds like a step down to us!

Maybe he made loads of money from the sale of the channel and just really likes weather reporting?

You can click here to read Coleman's diatribe.

However, in re. Coleman's claims — are they truly objective counter points to Gore's Inconvenient Truth.

Coleman's claims reeked 'Republican-right' arguments to 'Democrat-left' Gore's assertions (i.e. Coleman appears to support flinging the environmentalists out of the way to get at America's oil sources and build more oil refineries across the land). Plus, he gave a shout out to Fox News and Rush Limbaugh for sharing his P.O.V. with the masses.

Are his assertions that Gore and the UN manipulated their scientific data to advance the global warming theory right on?

The 9,000 scientists he says signed a petition refuting the global warming claims — are they totally free from any influence from the oil industry?

Can we really pump shit loads of CO2 in the air and it not hurt us, like Coleman argues?

Are there objective 'non-partisan' voices out there on the issue?

This is old news. Don't you ever listen to any right wing news? Or are you like the rest of America who only listens to mainstream media who is by far left leaning. No Global warming does not exist, but this story broke about 5 months ago. I listen to Rush every morning. He is brilliant, and the masses just don't like him because he's "not cool". Al Gore is self-centered and wants the world to believe all this green gas hoo-ha. Also, so do the media and crazy liberals want people to continue to depend on the govt. for all of their needs instead of encouraging big govt. to stay out of our daily lives and just spend time protecting us and keeping us up-to-date with the rest of the world. Everything else should be left up to us, or do y'all just WANT to turn your lives over to big govt. and become communists? Perez, I'm disappointed you are just now stating this old news. Keep up, dude. Stay open-minded, don't just sop up whatever celebrities and the mainstream media tell you because that could convince you to believe and preach a bunch of lies.

I had a geology professor in college that was very well respected in the geology field. His opinion that we do not have enough history and that we have only been recording weather for about 150+ years. For example, that is comparable to saying that we are having a CRISIS because it was 60 when I woke up this morning and now it is 85 so things must be out of control. We just do not have enough data or even more so, reliable data.

It amazes me how sheeple will believe anything and everything they're told if there's doom and gloom involved. If they would bother to do ANY amount of research on the matter, they would discover than the majority of true meteorologists do NOT believe that global climate change is manmade. It is part of the natural cycle of Earth's weather patterns. Look, we had an ice age once, did we not? And it thawed out, prior to any sort of manmade CO2 emissions. So, obviously there has been "global warming" in the past. We had a mini-Ice Age in the Middle Ages, and the weather warmed back up, did it not without the influence of industrialized nations' "polluting" the atmosphere with CO2. It's also amusing how the term was "global warming" a few years ago, and now they've changed it to "global climate change", since the temperature has actually DROPPED over the past couple of years. They seem to change their definitions and terms to suit their needs.

It's also amusing how the ones who are screaming the loudest about global climate change are the ones who are making money (from books, movies, speaking engagements, etc), and they automatically call the ones who disagree with their opinions "crazy" and demand that their credentials be stripped.

For all I care, Al Gore could personally dump all of his sewage on baby seals and I would still not change my mind about his message. His house uses a lot of energy, so what? No one has done more to bring attention to the problems in our environment and inspired more people to be more responsible with our resources.

Those guys can say all they want about Al's actions, but their action and advise to the public are 100 times more harmful than Al's mansion, which according to republican economics he rightfully earned and deserves.

Does it really matter if you believe in global warming or not? There is no harm in trying to better the way we live and our impact on our environment. Instead of arguing who is right or wrong, how about just focusing on change for the better and on being less wasteful beings.

He makes a passioned argument. But here's my question… If the earth has cooled over 10 years and global warming is a hoax, why did a chunk of ice the size of Connecticut fall into the ocean in February? Why are the caps shrinking? If warming isn't a problem, this shouldn't be happening.

  17. b says – reply to this

    117

Global warming hysteria is just another way for the elites and the government to control the masses. They use it to dictate the type of lightbulbs we use (say goodbye to the incandescent bulb), they type of cars we drive (coming in 2012), tax add-ons.

Very few people realize that it takes more energy to manufacture the florescent bulbs than the incandescent ones use to give us our light. Also what are we going to do about all that mercury in those bulbs that ends up in landfills? Most people are not going to recycle those bulbs.

Hey, but at least we'll all feel good about ourselves and we can sleep comfy knowing that at least we TRIED even if we made the environment worse.

weatherman seems to be more even-keeled.
unfortunately al gore has even admitted to exaggerating and even making up "facts" in his peace prize winning power point presentation (not really sure what it has to do with peace…seems to me the man starts more arguments than he solves). anyway. look it up. to paraphrase, he has admitted (on more than one occasion) that sometimes it's necessary to make things up so the people will understand the severity of the situation.
this, to me, is akin to my mom telling me as a small child not to chew coughdrops or my teeth would be stuch together for life. seriously, she could have just said that she didn't want me to choke. the american people are smarter than mr. gore thinks. tell the truth- always, objectively- and people will take you more seriously.

  24. Tyrus says – reply to this

    124

The THEORY of global warming is B.S. Yes the world is getting warmer, but that is exactly what it is supposed to do considering the earth is at the tail end of its last ice age. The warming of the global environment aids in the creation of new plant and life species just as it may harm species in colder environments. When the earth begins to cool is when we are in true danger. Mammels, especially humans, would not survive another ice age. The biggest threat to the earth is air pollution not global warming. People should do some research instead of believing what is en vogue or what is spoonfed by the media. It is a true travesty that Gore won the Nobel prize for a power point presentation that cannot be validated.

  25. NRM says – reply to this

    125

I don't really have a dog in the fight and come down pretty much in the middle in terms of politics. The earth is getting warmer, but we were in a mini ice age 500 years ago that we've been coming out of the past 100 years or so, with a slight dip in the 60's when scientists thought we might go back into an ice age and freaked everybody out. There is a pretty strong theory that the earths climate goes up and down depending on the changing strength of the sun, which would make sense since it does heat our planet. But if that was the case, than our species wouldn't be quite as important, would it? I hope that all our money doesn't go into fighting CO2, when that's probably not the cause and we can spend it to do other more meaningful things for the enviroment.

Why are you questioning whether one or the other is correct? Oh my God! Are you actually asking people to think? I am so proud of you. Please continue to ask people to question and to read both sides of an issue.
Now I'm sorry, but I do have to point out a couple of things you may not like. You call Gore's statements "assertions." Yet you call the weather channel guy's statements "arguments" and "diatribe." Do you see that those words automatically slant the reader's point of view? This is what most of us who don't swallow the mainstream media gospel have been trying to point out for years. That type of slant has been used on us all forever in order to influence our opinions.
Don't be a cool-aid drinker. Don't short-change yourself. Give yourself and your readers the opportunity to think outside the box. Read and discover both sides of issues. You'll find that neither side is right or wrong 100% of the time. YOu might even find that those evil right wingers actually do have hearts and actually love their fellow man.

Re: debun – (and also to dorit/91)Your responses are certainly appropriate and display clear, rational thinking. I'm not trying to suggest that politics has no place on PerezHilton.com, but I do wonder why Perez chose this particular subject, today, and devoted two separate posts to it.
    .
Normally when Perez gives us politics, he does it by tying it to something a celeb said. These two posts seemed to come out of the blue - the first one (with no celeb connection at all) is a rehash of some charges planted on Matt Drudge's site many months ago. And the Coleman opinions are not new either - they've been out there for just as long (and I don't consider Coleman a real celeb). Why these posts, now? Is Perez being paid by the right wing smear machine to discedit Gore, in part to try to lessen the impact of his endorsement of Obama? I can't say for sure. But what I know for sure is that posts of these type, on a non-political blog, immediately draw "Freepers" from the right and "Dem Undergrounders" from the left, people with entirely too much time on their hands, who post regurgitated, often wildly-inaccurate polemics disguised as personal opinions.
    .
As I said before, I like to read about celeb-related political rants. Those are part and parcel of the PerezHilton experience. But in the future I'll probably just skip over Perez's blatant ploys to increase page views, and move on the REAL celeb dish. Thanks for reading and understanding.

Now to underscore the quackery… I looked up more information on one of the scientists against the theory… Richard Lindzen.. he's also responsible for stating the following:

[edit] Views on health risks of smoking
Lindzen has claimed that the risks of smoking, including passive smoking, are overstated. In 2001,[25] Newsweek journalist Fred Guterl reported, after an interview with Lindzen

He'll even expound on how weakly lung cancer is linked to cigarette smoking. He speaks in full, impeccably logical paragraphs, and he punctuates his measured cadences with thoughtful drags on a cigarette.[25

You've said a lot of controversial things, Perez, but this is the first time I've thought you were a moron. What's up with debating cold, hard scientific facts? Even if somehow, someway, Global Warming doesn't exist (which, ask any scientist not on a right-wing payroll, it does), what is the harm in cleaning up our planet? Geeze, I wonder why in the world are so many people opposed to cleaning up? Don't say it isn't cause they have money at stake or, more accurately, because the politicians many republicans blindly support have money at stake. Cause, gosh, that would just be dumb and shortsighted and selfish. Do YOU TOO want to finance the St. Bart's vacations and Cartier watches and liposuctioning of the kill for oil big gas businesses and politicians? You know, all in exchange for our only home. And, what the eff is Gore getting out of helping the planet when he's donating such a chunk of his proceeds to the effort? This is a very sick post of yours. I'd rather see you make fun of kids. In fact, I'm kinda tempted not to read your blog anymore, though I have too much foresight to not know that my curiosity over Lindsay Lohan's deal with Samantha Ronson will overcome me.

Congratulations, Perez! In my home area, we had a high-profile meteorologist also sign a petition that included some 36,000 scientists signatures claiming that this global warming bit is not necessarily all it is made out to be. This global warming panic is sheer idiocy. I think global warming forgot all about Minnesota. This spring was freezing and this is the first truly hot day we've had. And the winter lasted well into April. Another ice age coming on? Go figure.

Why wasn't Al smart enough to warn us about this back when he was VP? It seems to me that he's leading this band wagon to make money (carbon credit schemes) and make himself relevant. Losing to W really smarts I bet. If the global warmers are so sure they're right why do they freak out whenever someone speaks up against it? Not every scientist who disagrees with Gore works for an oil company. Gore says the debate is over, that's what they said about WMD in Iraq, look how that worked out.

    Re: Ameri

"Americans are so fucking stupid". Wow! What an original, intelligent and completely untrue statement. If you think that the "evidence" on global warming is written in stone, you may be the one missing a few brain cells. Unfortunately for you, brain cells don't grow back. Maybe if you quit drinking the Kool-Aid now you can stave off further damage.

Also, has anyone noticed that the environmental loonies having slyly started calling 'global warming' 'climate change', because they realized because the term was misleading. Earth's climate changes. It's been happening since the beginning of time. We can do our part to live cleaner, but to think that we are the majority of the problem are just plain foolish.

The last "Ice Age" that we had, as defined as ice sheets covering North America and Eurasian continents, was 11,000 years ago. The fact that we no longer have ice sheets covering our continent means that "global warming" happened all by itself, whether we like it or not. It also means that the one constant the world has is change, whether we like it or not. Oh, BTW, Co2 is a NATURAL element. It occurs most commonly in evaporating water. So what Gore really wants you to do is STOP DRINKING COFFEE, YOU'RE KILLING THE PLANET. ps — Al Gore had worse grades at Harvard than George Bush……yes it's true.

Are you kidding about big cities in the U.S. not using public transportation??? Do your research before make statements like that, because what you wrote is completely untrue. I don't now where you're from, but go visit the NYC tri-state area (which includes New Jersey and Connecticut) wheres buses, trains, subways and even ferries are extremely popular choices of transportation. And they're EVERYWHERE!!!

Even in Los Angeles, they implemented a subway system in spite of the dangers of the frequent earthquakes. Will people please stop blaming America for all of the ills in the world? We're just an easy target. People need to start looking more at countries such as China and Russia. This is all so ridiculous…..

perez you truly are a wanker. You won't listen to 9000 scientists but believe every word from Al Gore? That truly makes me you a dick. An ugly fat dick.

Al Gore spends all that money on his own house to make it "green" because it is so huge when he could live in a smaller house and invest some money into projects that give alternatives to fuel. Also, think of his lifestyle. I'm sure those scientists don't fly all the time. Planes account for much more than cars.

And do you really want to compare the US with 2nd and 3rd world countries instead of countries within their own league??? And (believing or not believing into global warming aside) what's so wrong about recycling, saving energy and trying to make the earth a cleaner place? It definitely won't do harm and just maybe it'll make the earth a cleaner place!

Hey moron get your head out of your ass. The earth has warmed and cooled since it was formed. Ice ages asshole (and not just one), and when the melting came I'm sure everyone was simply fuckin' amazed that the ice was retreating and the higher latitudes were getting warmer. Yes, the earth is getting warmer but it's happened many times before and the historical data shows that it's happened in much more rapid fashion than this time. Now, for the record, do I believe that "green" is the way to go…SURE DO, however, if you can't wrap your feebile little brain around the fact that this has occured before and that it's not totally man made then you're a moronic fuck-tard!

Reading this, it makes me sad that people still do not take global warming serious. Raised in Europe and living in China for the last 3 years, I realize the meaning of pollution and what effects it has on the weather and health of people.

Even if we can question some facts in Al Gore's movie, I think the world should admit the most important fact; Global Warming is there and it is causing problems we can not even foresee for the near future. If all of us would start facing this and be aware that all we do in daily life can effect this process, we can contribute to stop this problem.

For all the people that don't believe in making the environment greener, I am pretty shocked, most arguments were nonsense. We have been living on this earth for such a long time and only since the last 100 years our way of living made a huge step, how can we say that we don't put a heavy burden on our planet? We live with way too many things we don't need and nowadays we work our ass off to buy and waste. Money makes life easy and I am the last person to say we don't need it but we think that we can buy everything with this but to be honest; there is no money enough to prevent all the disasters caused by global warming. And we can not buy a clean earth whenever we want, we have to start now to be sure that our children, grandchildren and future generations can enjoy this planet like we did!

good for you bringing this up perez. i believe in clean water, clean air and getting off the teat of foreign oil. but the planet does not have a fever—man is not causing global warming. i cannot believe this silly movement has grown to where it has. and while it is important to make sure reports and studies aren't financed solely by big oil, it is equally important to make sure contrary studies aren't financed solely by environmental groups. bbc4 had great documentary on all this—-i encourage anyone who cares to find it on youtube. we are going to be spending trillions of dollars on all this—-and it will be your money.

    Who benefits from Global Warming?

Gore, and Global Investment Management, LLP (GIM), the London-based private equity firm of which Gore is the founder and Chairman, stand to benefit in untold riches if we invest in the companies he recommends in his lectures.

PS. NASA quietly corrected its information on the global climate. The hot year on record is in the 1930s.

It certainly is NOT a step down for John Coleman. He came to San Diego many years ago to retire - but this energetic young soul didn't want to just sit around and grow old quietly. Since coming to San Diego and KUSI he has brought a certain spunk, charm and small town feel to San Diego. We would be at a loss without him.
