Al Gore Responds

Filed under: Politik > Al Gore

algore2.jpg

We told y'all earlier that former vice president Al Gore seemed a little two faced when it was revealed by the Tennessee Center for Policy Research that the former Vice President's home energy use has risen by more than 10% over the past year.

Mr. Gore's spokesperson reached out to us to set the record straight.

Here's what she said:

I had the chance to read your blog today and wanted to take a chance to
clear the record:

1. The Gores undertook a three plus year renovation that concluded in
November 2007 with the issuance, in November 2007 of Gold LEED (Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design) from the US Green Building Council.

2. As part of this renovation, the Gores have:
-Installed a geothermal system for heating, cooling and hot water
-Installed 33 solar panels
-Completely retrofitted their appliances, windows, ductwork, insulation, and
lighting.

3. Since the renovations were complete, the Gores have saved 40 percent on
their site energy use (which is a combination of electricity and natural gas
bills–the two major sources of global warming gases).

4. The Gores also purchase their electricity, through their utility, from
the Green PowerSwitch program–which means that their electricity come from
solar, wind and methane gas.

So, in summary, the Gores have: made their home more energy efficient, the
produce electricity from renewable power (solar, geothermal) and they
purchase renewable power. No one is perfect, but they are doing their part.

Finally, the Gores are also donating a substantial amount of their personal
time to educate the public about the climate crisis as well as donating the
proceeds of their work to charity. They have donated the proceeds of the
Nobel Peace Prize, "An Inconvenient Truth" (the book and film), and Mrs.
Gore's photography to the Alliance for Climate Protection and The Climate
Project.

And there you have it.

Thoughts?

    I call bullshit!!! Even if he did make those changed he is still using tons of non-renewable energy, and renewable energy still releases anthropomorphic gasses into the atmosphere.

  2. M says – reply to this

    202

    Perez,
    -
    Like I sad before, as long as it is renewable energy that the Gore's are using it does not matter HOW MUCH energy they use.
    -
    All this really brings to light is that the Tennessee Center for Policy Research does not like Al Gore —
    -
    who cares how much energy he uses this does not make him a hypocrite — the energy he is using is not producing CO2 —
    -
    and for those of you who don't believe in Global warming, do nothing…
    -
    and for those of you that do believe in Global warming, DO SOMETHING, anything.

    the "green" movement is just another way for rich people to spend their money.

  4. Harry says – reply to this

    204

    So he reduced his electricity usage by 40 percent, and now it's down to only 139 average homes?

  5. chimp says – reply to this

    205

    Why do all that? You still end up using TONS of resources. You could get a smaller residence and not do any of that show-offy green stuff. It looks to us like you just want the green good guy image. You could REALLY SACRIFICE and scale your lifestyle down, but no. I think the ego is much too large to ever scale down and live like a regular upper-middle class couple.

    206

    Al is such a fuckhead. If you want to save the planet. Consume less in all things. CONSUME LESS!! Conservation is the only way to do it. Not easy is it, America?

  7. Daryl says – reply to this

    207

    Some people refuse to accept the reality of global warming and the effects it is causing to our planet. Al has been trying to open people's eyes to this for a while now. Those rightwing nutbags who can't even entertain the notion of anything other than their own agenda just want to turn a POSITIVE message into something NEGATIVE. We can all do our parts to make the earth a better place. I have been recycling since the beginning of this year and I'm also doing other small things that will help. Forget about bashing Gore and focus your energy on saving the Earth's resources.

  8. joan says – reply to this

    208

    Well my thought is that it takes a LOT of money to be able to SAVE money AND the planet. But I am not willing to put those ugly lightbulbs all over my house because studies show they can pose more harm than good (for example proper disposal and cancer concerns).

    Re: mouse – You are a MORON. You don't think that the quickly increasing population, the incredible amount of refuse and pollution that comes with so many people will effect this planet? Yes, the temp fluctuates and things change but with more and more people on this planet, dumping shit, plastic, gases into the earth and contaminating our water supples, etc…you don't even entertain the possibility of global warming and the dangers to our environment? I have a theory about people like you….not only are you too stupid to see something staring you directly in the face, you are too damn lazy to try to work toward an improvement that could help us all. If you don't believe in global warming, at least get off your lazy ass and start recycling so that the millions and millions of plastic bottles, bags and other plastic items we use are not still around hundreds of years from now.

  13. Karen says – reply to this

    213

    Global warming is a farce. Carbon credits are a scam that is making this fat a-hole rich. Way to go treehuggers!

    215

    So what-he is still a freaking hypocrite. He can take that "Do as a I say, not as I do" brand of eco-elitism and shove it. The average person is struggling just to get by, we do what we can to live green because it is just common sense BUT this man has an agenda that would put unfair burdens and limitations on the individual, eventually reducing our constitutional rights and freedoms. Big brother is still big brother!

    AL GORE LIVES IN A HUGE MANSION OR TWO, WHY NOT HAVE A SMALLER RESIDENCE TO SAVE ENERGY?
    AL GORE IS APPARENTLY NOT A VEGETARIAN AND THE MEAT INDUSTRY IS ONE OF THE TOP SOURCES OF CARBON EMISSIONS!
    AL GO LOOK FOR MANBEARPIG!

  17. 217

    Once a loser always a pathetic, hypocritical loser! He is one of the reasons gas prices are so high.

  18. Loube says – reply to this

    218

    Al Gore and many other politicians use the jets of others to get around and not appear to use big gas guzzling business jets(my hubby is a corporate pilot who has witnessed this hypocrisy from Mr. Gore). Yet they vilify Republicans for doing the same thing they're doing. Politicians of either party care nothing for environmental causes. They just care about the vote and usually liberal voters care a lot about the environment so they can't afford to upset their base just as conservative politicians could never upset their base with something like having an abortion while campaigning against it. Republicans fly in their own jets with their name on the flight plan Democrats fly in their friend's jets while hiding their name.

    Why can't the most people not a least google the topic they want to comment on? A quick glance at Wikipedia would be a good idea for a "quick fix" on info, too.
    No, Gore isn't perfect, but at least he is trying and he did more to wake up the US to Global Warming than any other. I rather have him getting paid for doing something for the sake of OUR planet than all those Hollywood celebs getting paid for aehm…, … aeh,… yeah…. being famous???

    Re: Pure – …. and your republican mindset betrays you….no emotion and pure pig-headed stubborness. I love how the rightwing evangelicals follow a political party like yours that cares nothing about helping others and adheres to a robotic political agenda that blindly accepts a disasterous and unnecessary war, a president who has been detrimental to our country for 8 years and yet still maintains that global warming is not even a remote possibility. So Christian-like to be a warmonger….but so un-Christian-like to try and save the planet. Gore shouldn't be the issue….keeping our planet healthy should be the top priority.

  21. karen says – reply to this

    221

    yeah gore isnt perfect, and he might fly on planes but cmon is he supposed 2 walk from state 2 state to give his lectures? the important thing is, he is makein people AWARE OF WAT IS GOING ON, if he goes 100% green he wont save the planet, its up 2 us! so stop bitching at him and go do something for the earth. oh and the movie he made? almost all of those movies are handed out 4 free 2 ppl so uh .. NO U STUPID FUCKS ITS NOT A SCHEME FOR HIM TO GET RICH. and U FUCKING MORONS HE IS USEING SOLAR FUCKING ENERGY SO NO MATTER HOW MUCH HE USES HE IS NOT HURTING THE FUCKING PLANET!

    oh who the fuck am i kidding im trying to get you idiots who comment on perezes useless "news" everyday to listen to some logic, ill have more luck teaching a dog french .

I've been well informed about it since… a 9th grade earth and science class… I now have my Bachelors degree in Biology. Gore himself has been working w/ scientists for 20+ years (guess you have to actually watch the movie for that tid bit). It obviously takes several years for many things to become well known the the uneducated class or the just plain I-don't-give-a-shiters. Wish I had the stats for that… Oh well, so what? … we make saving the Earth trendy and gladly have spokesmen and women talk about how important it is… blah… blah. Its how to get stuff done today. Facts are facts and the fact is that he still used more kilowatt hours after installing all of this "energy saving" equipment. His electric bills, which were obtained via the Freedom of Information Act, bear out that truth. FYI, that usage was in excess of 17,000 kwh per month. Thats enough to heat / cool 6-7 1500sq ft. homes. IF he was really concerned about carbon footprints, I would think the inventor of the internet could deliver his message via the 'net or through video conferencing. Why doesnt he? Well that wouldnt line his pocket very much or let him ride in luxurious private jets. The man is a phony. A scam artist, who expects us all to walk the walk, while he talks the talk and gets rich from it. That makes him a waste of good sperm

    I live in Nashville, not far from the Gores. His massive home consumes more kWh/per month than the average family uses in an entire year… despite his "green" renovation. His carbon footprint in infinitely higher than he would want you to believe. .

    Many Americans have foolishly bought into his lies about his "green" lifestyle and agenda. We Nashvillians have been able to observe Mr. Gore first hand and see what kind of a man he really is. In the majority of our opinions (if you remember, he lost the state of TN in the 2000 election) we believe him to be a fraud. This is yet another attempt to profiteer off the fears of the people. He makes me sick.

  52. 252

    Al Gore is a hack who is making a fortune off of "Global Warming", oh wait, it's "Climate Change" now. He's taking this country for a ride at the expense of impressionable idiots.

    Really? Just because Al Gore said Global Warming is real, lets forget about all the doctors and those in the science community who clearly put out the information, but nobody would listen. Let us also not forget about people who have been living and doing all these things long before Al Gore made it "cool" to be green. I am also so thankful that he gave the money he made off other people's information to groups that already promote and put out the information. Thanks Al Gore, you are a real American hero.

    Perez - I personally think "winner"! What he's done to bring global warming to the front of everyone's mind, to educate, to motivate, to inspire change, and to bring about awareness has done so much for the environment and been so much MORE powerful than one lousy house's energy consumption. He never claimed to be holier than though, and I never considered him to be self-righteous. If he can't be perfectly green (and who is, anyway?), at least he's inspired MILLIONS and millions around the WORLD to be more green. Now THAT has an effect.

    Re: Susie – Amen Sister. This renovation BS only happened after he got press for how ridiculously un-eco-friendly his home was. Now he's spent a boatload of money to retrofit, rather than downsize. Can't give up the extravagant home. How many starving children might that money have fed? How many homeless might it have taken off the streets? But actually helping wasn't the point, making him look good was the point. "Living green" is a passing fad, available only to the elite. The celebs will tire of it soon, and it will be replaced with something else that they'll jump on and hold themselves in high esteem for embracing. As further proof that it is out of reach for the average person, a friend of mine bought a Prius, ’cause he felt it was the responsible thing to do. After less than three years, the battery died, this is apparently the expected lifetime for these batteries. The cost for a replacement battery you ask???? $8,500. For a frickin' battery!!!! Every three years!!! Bye-Bye Prius.

    I think what we are trying to say is lead by example. Private jets, convoys of SUV's, multiple homes each larger than what is needed, sure he's put some green energy in but face it if tomorrow we had another ice age you know there would be some dickhead like Al Gore trying to be a spokesman for "change". It makes them money whether you want to believe it or not. They prey on acceptance. They need it to survive. It's how they make their millions while over the course of years the America public lives on small standard cost of living increases. It's how they keep the middle class down. It what they talk about in their secret Harvard elbow shake meetings.

    Re: Lanel

    "People just dont get the global warming issue. Its sad and bash him for taking private jets? How else is he suppose to get around efficiently."

    I really hope you're being sarcastic. Because, if you think that Al Gore traveling around in a private jet is in any way efficient, you must have an IQ under 70. If he really cared about the environment, he'd be flying the friendly skies with one of the major airlines.

    Don't get me wrong. I'm all for people taking private jets. I just have a major problem with hypocrites.

    Here's an interesting factoid: One round trip across the U.S. gas usage is equivalent to supplying gas for a Hummer at an average of 12,000 miles per year. So think about how the celebrities who travel by private jet, and then are on TV telling you to live 'Green' are totally full of themselves and full of shit.

    ~ Hub & I do what we can to reduce my consumption (Wal-Mart & cheap-o stores do more to harm this envrionment than Al Gore ever will because they encourage overproduction & overconsumption, "It's cheap so BUY!BUY!BUY!") ~ We reuse/repurpose anything possible w/out & recycle everything our local system will allow. We do lots of other stuff too (no plastic bags; buy solar/wind/etc. power from the power company; buy organic ). It's not difficult people. And it doesn't make us liberal idiots. ~ I commend Gore for retro-ecoing his home…however, it's not enough. The rich have an obsession w/ flashing their wealth & it is of detriment to the rest of us. McMansions & mansions really piss me off. Enough w/ having several "designer" cars, multiple homes, bazillions of clothes and worthless objects.
    ~ Gore, you need to sell your McMansion or mansion and you need to downsize…then "the uneducated class or the just plain I-don't-give-a-shiters" (thanks Dear ;D) might hear a little of what you say.
    ~ Until then, they'll continue to support their hideous Bush in spite of the fact that NEITHER HE NOR HIS ADMINISTRATION STOPPED 9/11 (HELLO, MISSED/IGNORED INTELLIGENCE!), they got us into a pathetic war that he/his peeps wanted b4 he was ever elected, our economy sucks & now in his last several months he wants to "SAVE US ALL"…

    The Tennessee Center for Policy Research is an independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan research organization. Their report deals with the energy Gore uses that can be tracked - not the power he generates himself (via solar panels, etc). It is as much as 20 average homes. Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house alone averaged $1,080 per month last year. Gore donates his profits to the "Alliance for Climate Protection", an organization he founded. So it's not like he really give the money away, it is available used at his discretion. A lot of people in the TVA use Green PowerSwitch energy - that's a good thing. But Gore telling Americans to cut back and make sacrifices while he consumes so much energy, jets arounds, and makes millions in the carbon offset business is hypocritical.

    ** PART 3, yes, finally…
    WHY IS IT THAT IT TOOK A COURT ORDER & 8 YEARS FOR YOUR LOVELY BUSH TO RELEASE AN UPDATED GLOBAL WARMING REPORT THAT WAS DUE IN 2004?!?! It's called, SPECIAL INTERESTS & CONFLICT OF INTEREST.
    ~ "The new report comes after the Bush administration was ordered last August by Federal District Court Judge Saundra Armstrong to publish an updated research plan and national assessment on climate change. By law the White House is required to publish such a report every four years, yet until now the current administration had failed to do so since it took office. The previous National Assessment was issued in late 2000 under the Clinton administration."
    ~~~Oh, and I find it entirely entertaining when Bushitheads say, "Bush has protected us from further attacks." You idiots think they couldn't attack us right now if they wanted to? PUH-LEASE! The day I take something you say seriously is the day you see this man & his administration for what they are: self-serving hooligans.
    yes. leave him alone. i actually think it's embarassing to make fun of al gore. it's so paris hilton to be question gore's investment in the environment. and that's what the 2000's will be known for: human kind picking each other apart to the most minute level. the 80's were consumerism, the 90's were apathy and the 2000 are schadenfreude. the people that call al gore lame are in the same boat as people who think a picture steals your soul. history will condemn you as neanderthals.
    ** Part 4: Sorry, I have to get this out…
    If doesn't matter if you believe in global warming or not for fucks sake. It's about the OVERALL environment WE & ALL OTHER LIVING BEINGS share. POLLUTION OF MANY KINDS WILL BE THE END OF US (if you assholes don't kill us quicker through world war). What's the harm in reducing/repurposing/reusing/recycling? There's no excuse not too!
    ~ How do you justify sea birds & other marine life showing up dead w/ pounds & pounds of plastic in them: "Much of our waste today is comprised of plastic that does not biodegrade. This waste accumulates in swirling seas of debris, where plastic to sea life ratios are 6:1; where birds and mammals are dying of starvation and dehydration with bellies full plastics; and fish are ingesting toxins at such a rate that soon they will no longer be safe to eat."
    *** Can any of you Bushitheads TELL ME HOW DRILLING OFF OF OUR SHORES (WHICH WILL TAKE AT LEAST 5-10YRS) FOR 2 & 1/2 YEARS WORTH OF OIL WILL HELP US ALL?
    ~ Gas prices are up for good. Check 'em out around the world. If you want to save money, stop buying excesses of useles crap & start doing things on a small scale at home…for your self-righteous Republican children, grandchildren and the rest of us! Do something positive & stop trying to discourage others from doing so.
    I am from Tennessee, and this guy owns 4 homes (2 here, 1 in D.C., and 1 in California). His kids are all adults, and it is just him and Tipper!! How much room do these two need!!??!! The guy has a 10,000 sq. foot house in Nashville!! It uses up the equivalent energy of 19 avg. households, but he wants EVERYONE else to cut back?!?!? This guy may be the biggest crook in this decade!! He is a fraud, and I am glad the rest of the country is finding that out!!
    Hahahahahahahahaha, all this shit the Gores are supposedly doing and it won't do one thing to change the climate. In fact, even if everyone on earth did what the Gores are supposedly doing, it won't change the climate even one billionth of a degree because the climate change is part of the natural cycle of nature and has nothing to do with humans. Only arrogant assholes like the Gores actually think we have the power to change the climate. The degree of foolishness is just overwhelming. Centuries from now they'll still be laughing about what liberals like the Gores did in 2008.
    Perez, what you are doing is extremely reckless. You first posted about Al Gore being a hypocrite without even checking the facts before doing so. Now it has come to your attention what Al Gore has been doing to reduce his impact, and yet you still attempt to imply that there is some wrongdoing on his behalf. Global warming is too big of an issue to get caught up in something so silly, we all need to be doing our part, leave name calling out of it!
    In response to the comments posted so far:
    First - If you truly want to learn what actual scientists have to say about global warming, do a Google scholar search and limit your results to the last 5 years. Any article that has not been peer reviewed by the scientific community isn't really even considered a legitimate study or source of information by actual scientists. The vast majority of the information fed to Americans through the mainstream media is NOT peer reviewed…do yourself a favor and quit listening to your favorite politicians and bloggers and truly figure out what global warming is on your own.
    Second - Al Gore's home also has a second purpose as an office for his staff and his wife's staff. If the TCPR wanted to do an accurate comparison of energy usage, they should have considered the energy use of an average sized office for a staff the size of the Gores'.
    Third - If the TCPR are truly a non-partisan group, they should have gone to the Gores and allowed them the opportunity to explain the groups findings. Instead, they released this information in all its negative glory, so that ill informed bloggers could release it and promote their cause of making the Gores look bad.
    Fourth - I'm not a huge Al Gore fan but I am a fan of having an informed and educated opinion.
    Fifth - Perez, I know that this is a gossip blog and gossip is what you do best but you do your fans a disservice when you post political gossip. Judging from the comments posted so far, you have a lot of young, naive and impressionable readers. They will believe ANYTHING you post here. I don't know where you stand politically, but it seems that posting something like this tips the balance away from rights that you seem to hold close to your heart.
    Sixth - I'm totally addicted to you, Perez. I don't know why because you're pretty mean and I'm sure if I were even slightly famous you'd publicly massacre me any chance you got..but here I am, every day. You're the bad boyfriend that I just can't break up with. Damnit.
