Al Gore Responds

Filed under: Politik > Al Gore

algore2.jpg

We told y'all earlier that former vice president Al Gore seemed a little two faced when it was revealed by the Tennessee Center for Policy Research that the former Vice President's home energy use has risen by more than 10% over the past year.

Mr. Gore's spokesperson reached out to us to set the record straight.

Here's what she said:

I had the chance to read your blog today and wanted to take a chance to
clear the record:

1. The Gores undertook a three plus year renovation that concluded in
November 2007 with the issuance, in November 2007 of Gold LEED (Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design) from the US Green Building Council.

2. As part of this renovation, the Gores have:
-Installed a geothermal system for heating, cooling and hot water
-Installed 33 solar panels
-Completely retrofitted their appliances, windows, ductwork, insulation, and
lighting.

3. Since the renovations were complete, the Gores have saved 40 percent on
their site energy use (which is a combination of electricity and natural gas
bills–the two major sources of global warming gases).

4. The Gores also purchase their electricity, through their utility, from
the Green PowerSwitch program–which means that their electricity come from
solar, wind and methane gas.

So, in summary, the Gores have: made their home more energy efficient, the
produce electricity from renewable power (solar, geothermal) and they
purchase renewable power. No one is perfect, but they are doing their part.

Finally, the Gores are also donating a substantial amount of their personal
time to educate the public about the climate crisis as well as donating the
proceeds of their work to charity. They have donated the proceeds of the
Nobel Peace Prize, "An Inconvenient Truth" (the book and film), and Mrs.
Gore's photography to the Alliance for Climate Protection and The Climate
Project.

And there you have it.

Thoughts?

he's a hypocrite. he's also involved in the "Green" thing for the publicity and money-there's no way he or any actual intelligent person who has researched both sides of the debate would believe in the global warming scam.

  2. Chris says – reply to this

    302

Why does he have to do all that in the first place to use less energy–why does his house use THAT MUCH energy anyway? That statement still doesn't explain anything

  3. Gore says – reply to this

    303

This fat sack of crap is a LIAR and a hypocrite. He doesn't do more than his part- talk is CHEAP. He tells US what to do, like john edwards does, but is the ultimate hypocrite. There is NO SUCH thing as a carbon credit- that is crap. His CGI film about global warming has helped create suppression of REAL research on climate because anyone who disagrees ISN'T funded. that is a form of intellectual terrorism.

I'm so tired of everyone judging people that try to make a difference. Yes Al Gore preaches certain things, and yes do as you preach, but COME ON! Everyone knows how difficult it is to be COMPLETELY GREEN. He tries, which is more than most people who post on this site can claim. Despite the statistics, Al Gore HAS attempted to make a difference by speaking out. How many of us can say the same?

  5. nara says – reply to this

    305

Before the switch to electricity and geothermal, Gore was "buying back" all of the energy that he used. However, it's impossible to actually use green energy with gas powered systems. The switch to electricity removed nearly all of the gas usage and allowed them to actually use 'green' energy while still buying back the slight amount of gas being used. Even more than the use of green energy or the solar panels, the house retrofit, which obviously uses more energy in its transitional stage, drastically reduces the amount of wasted energy and energy needed in the first place.

    310

I agree with those who question Mr Gore's hype. In renovating his house to become green, he would have thrown out a lot of perfectly functional materials and systems which took energy to make in the first place, to have them replaced by supposedly greener materials and systems which take more energy to make. It would be interesting to know how long it would take for the net decrease in energy usage to come into effect when you consider this. And the renovation took 3 years? It must have been some renovation! An easier solution would have been to donwnsize and live a simpler life. But I guess Mr Gore likes his life of luxury while preaching to the rest of us, travelling constantly in jets and lining his pockets. Once a politician, always a politician. There's got to be something in it for him.

  11. sally says – reply to this

    311

first of all read up what LEED Gold actually means. His house will practically breathe on its own, off the grid. Second, Al Gore's an Inconvenient Truth came out at a time that most people were still ignoring the truth about climate change. Al Gore has been working most of his career to bring this topic to the forefront. Because of his dedication to the topic many people around the world are now convinced there is a problem with our climate due to industrialized worlds off gassing and are doing something about it. An Inconvenient Truth is a clear, easily understood view of a very complicated subject. cudos to Al Gore

How big is their house when just the 2 of them live there? How big is the SUV that they are driven around in? What about the flights they are continually taking? Sure they retrofitted their house, but the house probably doesn't need to be that big in the first place. just sick and very hypocritical.

What an obese, overconsuming hypocrite Limousine Liberal Gore is!

  17. Micke says – reply to this

    317

Look, global warming is real, but the earth also goes through a warming and cooling process. Al Gore's movie was full of misfacts (stated by a myriad of scientists). But yet we give him an oscar and a Nobel peace prize. He flies around the country in his private jets. We would all love to be able to make our houses "Green" but lets add up the price tag for such a job. Al Gore is an elite liberal who lives in his little elite Hollywood world. Why didn't Al Gore and Clinton do anything about our energy situation when they were in office. This has been many years in the making. They wait for republicans to be in control, and then blast them for not being "green".

  18. Micke says – reply to this

Makes sense. COnstruction takes energy. The fact that the costruction is Gold level LEED certified means waaaaay more than some extra energy usage for one year. His house will now use way less over the years than a typical one. He is doing more than enough. Get off his back idiots. DO some LEED research asshats.

Al Gore brought environmental issues to the attention of the global arena. Regardless of how you see his movie, or other things he does to promote these issues, he made us all stop what we are doing and think about the issue at hand.
    -
He has challenged us to look at the facts of the realities of the environment (and to question his facts) and whether you like Al Gore as a person, or role model, or political leader — it does not matter. We are now talking about the environment like never before. That is what Al Gore did for this world.

Maybe all that energy consumption happened when they were doing all the renovations to their house. After all, building all that stuff isn't cheap at the outset, but in the long run it balances out.

Re: Tamar – i hate to see how all the environmentalists have been so brainwashed by Al Gore. The man is an investor in so many of the carbon offset companies that he now stands to make billions if the government adopts his warped way of thinking. This is about money pure and simple. Its great to want to help the planet but when it comes at a cost of other peoples rights and way of life then its gone too far. All this nonsense about doing this and that from Gore is doing nothing but raising your taxes to pay for them and infringing on your individual rights to live as you please regardless if the steak you ate comes from a cow that farted too much methane to melt the planet 10 years from now. Al Gore and his wife have done nothing but try to tell people how to run their lives since they came into the spotlight…. anyone remember his wifes attempt to ban certain music because she didnt believe it was right? Now i just have one question as far as all this global warming goes………… wasnt there an Ice Age before and where were all the cars and factories then to melt and warm the planet?

    335

    Al Gore is a douchebag

  36. meme says – reply to this

    336

    Oh, my two cents.

Thank you Mr. Gore for making your home more "energy efficient." However, you've missed an important point. You still have a carbon footprint that is outrageously excessive for yourself and your family. It's not about replacing your thousands of lightbulbs with energy efficient halogen. It's about reducing the number of lightbulbs you use in the first place.

So you're using 16,000 per month electricity rather than 22,000 a month. Big fat deal!!! Why do you and Tipper—two people—need that much electricity to read your books and sip your lattes?

You people still don't get it. You sit in your smug little worlds thinking you are doing such a favor to the rest of the world to buy a "more energy efficient" 25.000 square foot house, or a more energy efficient private jet, or replacing one of your fleet of vehicles with one that uses biofuels.

You don't get it. it's about reducing your needs. Living smaller. Living more simply. Living in a smaller house. vVdeoconferencing rather than jetting around the world.

If the man who invented the internet and discovered global warming doesn't get that, god help the rest of us.

  37. Peach says – reply to this

    337

The Gores are smarmy. Back in the 80s when Tipper was all about warning labels for song lyrics, that was just a ruse. She was only trying to cause a stir to get herself noticed so in turn, her husband would be and that supposedly would help him make it to the White House. I know this because my parents were at a party where they HEARD Tipper laughing about it all.

  41. Marky says – reply to this

    341

Thank you for setting the record straight. As I said yesterday, the falsehoods and half-truths spread by the oil industry are non-stop. Their intent is to make people believe that the science is still out on global warming (it isn't - the scientific community all believe it's real) and to try to discredit those who speak out for change (like Al Gore). Al may not be perfect, but he is doing more than any one person to push for change.

I have first hand knowledge that Mr Gore had his assistants call several companies (i.e. GE and ask for FREE flourescent lighting for his house). Do not forget that he flies around the country on his Leer Jet - and how much fuel does that take and isn't jet pollution contributing to so-called global warming?

  47. bridg says – reply to this

    347

Al Gore is standing on a platform that has no scientific proof of existence. Even if it did, I refuse to be "guilted into" my energy usage by politicians who use thousands of times as much. The USA is the most developed country in the world, and by comparison, one of the most energy efficient. We use more, because we produce more. In comparison, we are doing a great job. Why don't we stop condeming our own country! China pollutes more than any country and gets no criticism from our press. They also run a horrible country and are baby killers. We need to become completely independent and stop shooting ourselves in the foot. "Go Green" is something being sold to the young adults in america, and its working.

Okay. As soon as I make $100MM I promise to build a house 10 times bigger than any normal person would ever be able to afford. THEN, just to show what a great friend of the environment I am, I will remodel it to make it 40% more energy efficient. STILL using about six time more than any average person. Gore is a schmuck.

SERIOUSLY YOU ALL ARE SO SAD AND PATHETIC, NO WONDER THE WORLD LOOKS DOWN ON AMERICANS. AND JOSH, I DON'T KNOW WHWERE YOUR FROM, BUT WHERE I AM FROM YES YOU CAN BUY STRAIGHT UP ELECTRICITY FRON A RENEWABLE SOURCE, WE GET IT FROM HYDRO POWER AND THEIR SYSTEM DOES NOT GO INTO ANYONE ELSES SWITCHYARD BUT THEIR OWN, GET EDUCATED PEOPLE! By the way, educate yourselves — Gore WON the race against Bush. Our president's BROTHER was the governor of FL during his initial election against Gore. I am pleased they responded directly to you, acknowledging your direct connection to the people, and me. I like their response. Now, what I want to see is a website that displays the Gore house as a role model for other houses. They should share photos of the changes made to their home including final product; the costs associated with each specific task; the breakdown of the contribution of each modification towards lowering their energy bill; how the materials used in each task were manufactured; and, an overall over time record of energy savings including exact dollar amounts and kilowatt consumption. Finally, they should provide links to companies providing these services around the country. They may even choose to offer certification to companies who can demonstrate they use eco-friendly methods and materials during fabrication and installation. They have our attention. Now, what are they going to do with it?

  71. bush says – reply to this

    371

LOOK OVER THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FOLLOWING TWO HOUSES AND SEE IF YOU CAN TELL WHICH BELONGS TO AN ENVIRONMENTALIST.

    HOUSE # 1:

A 20-room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house all heated by gas. In ONE MONTH ALONE this mansion consumes more energy than the average American household in an ENTIRE YEAR. The average bill for electricity and
natural gas runs over $2,400.00 per month. In natural gas alone (which last time we checked was a fossil fuel), this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is not in a northern or Midwestern "snow belt," either. It's in the South.

  72. bush says – reply to this

    372

    HOUSE # 2:

Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university, this house incorporates every "green" feature current home construction can provide. The house contains only 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on arid high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F.)

heats the house in winter and cools it in summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and it consumes 25% of the electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater
from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Flowers and shrubs native to the area blend the property into the surrounding rural landscape.

Re: tiper – Make your research!Go to snopes for example. Gore never said he invented the internet. His comments were taken out of context of an interview he gave in March 1999 to CNN.

  74. bush says – reply to this

    374

HOUSE # 1 (20 room energy guzzling mansion) is outside of Nashville, Tennessee. It is the abode of that renowned environmentalist (and filmmaker) Al Gore.

HOUSE # 2 (model eco-friendly house) is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas. Also known as "the Texas White House," it is the private residence of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

So whose house is gentler on the environment? Yet another story you WON'T hear on CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC or read about in the New York Times or the Washington Post. Indeed, for Mr. Gore, it's truly "an inconvenient truth."

This is a man who until very recently made a mint off the back of oil sales. This is a man who did SWEET FUCK ALL for the environment whilst holding the second most powerful political position on earth.

I'm fucking sick of rich arseholes wanting credit because they can AFFORD to install a bunch of bourgeois feel good enviro crap in their homes (harder to do when you rent) even though for their entire lives they produce FAR FAR more carbon than the rest of us.

Gore is a typical middle class do nothing wanker who thinks he can change the world via his personal consumption.

Maybe if he composts himself he'll deserve a small percentage of the sycophantic praise he's received for his role as an "eco warrior"

I think the fact that he owns FOUR very large homes just about says it all. You can't have it both ways, Al. If you want the little people to believe you, you must give up the fat-cat, energy-hogging lifestyle. But your selfishness will prevent that. The people that are fooled by this guy are few and far between, unfortunately they are a very vocal bunch of Hollywood/media elitists.

Winner, OF COURSE. Sure they increased kwh but this explains that all of their electricity comes from renewable sources. Republicans need to start work on improving their image rather than grasping at straws to diminish people like al gore. It just makes them look bad.

Please stop preaching to the american people al snore. Its not his job to guilt us into making "green" changes (especially when he's making millions off of it). This whole green movement is a manufactured hand delivered creation aimed at young adults (you see it on mtv, with young celebrities, etc.) Its fine to decrease your energy if you want to, but dangerous when you let government dictate your decisions FOR you. The USA uses alot of energy because they are the most productive nation (so they spend alot of energy). In ratio, we are actually very consistent and reasonable. Why are we attacking ourselves when China is over there with a regime that kills innocent babies and causes more pollution than any other country??? Why don't they criticize themselves and talk about how bad they are? I think we're the only country that condemns ourselves. Drill for oil here. Bring back the small business. Stop depending on other countries and stop hating on america.

Winner. I love Al Gore. He's intelligent and continues to educate all of us, worldwide, about problems - and possible solutions - for the ever-increasing negative effects of global climate change.
Thumbs up for a smart guy with an honorable cause!

To the people saying that Global Warming isn't real.
Just because you don't believe in this one theory of climate change doesn't mean that people shouldn't be aware and do their part to protect the environment. Not to mention the chaos our dependence on oil has caused. Do you think we can just replant whole rain forests? It disgusts me that people can be so careless about something so irreplaceable.

Regardless of whether or not global warming is real (Why give the Nobel peace prize to someone with an imaginary cause, btw?), it is common sense that we get 80% of the clean air we breath from rain forests. At the rate they are depleting coupled with increasing amounts of carbon in the air and rapid population growth, do you think we'll have enough clean air to breath?

In short, STOP DRIVING YOUR SUVS AROUND, RECYCLE AND USE RECYCLED PRODUCTS, and SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE ENERGY.

No thank you al gore, I dont need you preaching to me. Go preach to china- they pollute more than any other country, but you don't see the leaders of their country telling them how awful they are and what they need to do to "change" and "go green". I swear, this go green thing is getting out of control. drill for oil here and stop depending on other countries. he's making a killing of this environment stuff! Of course he can afford to re-do his whole home in the more expensive "environment friendly" style. yeesh! this is a joke!

Al Gore is a good man trying to do good things. He is a very prominate figure in the US and I commend him for getting the reality of global warming out there. Think about how big your footprint on the world is Perez. Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones Mr. I was in London, now I'm in LA, no wait-Miami!

al gore is horrible. he found his little platform to make millions off of and he disgusts me. we need to drill for oil here- make money, generate jobs and decrease gas prices. al gore and the other environmentalists are the very reason we aren't able to do so.

I do believe that as Christians we have to step up for the Earth. Actions speak louder then words. And as for the "free talks", they were given AFTER the paid talks. Again, please check your facts.

Man is nothing but a blink of and eye biological experiment that will leave no trace of his existence after this planet decides to rid herself of us. Let's say what they say is true, that they have reduced their energy use by 40%. That is still using more energy in a course of two months than normal Americans use in a year. Definitely a case of do as I say, not as I do.

What a dumb ass. He just spent about 10 mil on his house when he would have been better off just using less energy like turning off the lights when not in use. 10 mil would have gone a long way to feed hungry kids in the USA. We have retards like that running our government.
