  12. ausgi says – reply to this

    112

this article was written by the leftwing age newspaper. they tend to be more factual than most other aus newspapers.
however, i don not think that this could be true. very few people i know are truly overweight or obese. i have also travelled around a fair bit of aus, including most of our state capitals(all except perth and darwin) and i saw very few obese people there. sure there is a a fair number who carry a little extra, but i know i've had times when i've put on weight, and lost it again. i don't think this report is entirely accurate. possibly meant to shock us all into living a bit healthier by scaring us??

  13. lee says – reply to this

    113

yeah i only know one obese person….i live in melbourne and hardly ever see anyone overweight! its hard to believe…maybe they have their own special fat town that no one know of…eeew

I was shocked because I have not seen many over weight people where i live, but then again i live in sydney and have only been to Queensland so i cant really speak for the whole country.
p.s Love your work Perez, keep it up :)

  23. h says – reply to this

    123

those statistics are taken from a survey of only a few thousand people. so if half of those people were fat, then they say that half of all australians are fat. which is not true. there's no way nine million australians are fat, our lifestyle keeps us from getting obese.

  24. ferna says – reply to this

    129

Just another person that has influence telling people they can't be happy if they're not the "ideal" size. How pathetic….

  30. Sam says – reply to this

    130

There's a big difference between 26% of 20 million people and 25% of about 300 million people. If you're only looking at the percentages then, yeah sure, Australia outranks the US, but the actual raw numbers tell a way different story. Statistics can be presented in so many different ways, not all of them particularly accurate.

  31. cassi says – reply to this

    131

you people are kidding right? we may be officially the most obese country, but the only reason why we are is because in terms of our population we have a large percentage. We only have like 20 - 25 million people in our country. So pretty sure America has more than 9 million obese people considering you's have 100s of millions of people.
And its not like you walk around the streets of aust and see a fat person everywhere you go, our country is as big as yours so yeah to fit only 20 million in a large continent you arent gonna see fat people everywhere you go! I dont know any obese adults or people in general for that matter.

And i cant believe some of you have the nerve to make us feel ashamed of this considering USA held the record for years and years!

    GET OVER IT!

  32. ashle says – reply to this

    132

thats crap!! seriously, having lived in both countries, i guarantee you, we're not in the same category as America. i dont mean that in a harsh way i mean it in a realistic way. yes, weight is definitely becoming an issue in Australia but an overweight person here looks NOTHING like an overweight American. Honestly 200lb is generally the biggest you'll find. VERY few weigh more than that.

  33. Tahs says – reply to this

    133

    Dear Perez
dont you forget that your country was the fattest in the world? Your states are known for its obesity all over the world Thanks to Super Size Me. That is bullshit because they dont take it from everyone… besides theres more people in america than australia so theres no comparison available to be accurate and your all fat pigs anyways.

  34. onefr says – reply to this

    134

    Re: cassi

Well said Cassi, and so are the Canadian! something I am not proud of, even ashamed of it!

What is going on in the heads of these fat disgusting individuals do they have any pride or self respect? WTF they make me sick

  35. Rache says – reply to this

    135

It isn't that the statistics are lying.. They are just being misinterpreted. The statistics include Overweight AND obese people, so anyone with a BMI over 25 is in that category.. The American tatistics include ONLY obese peope, so their statistics only include people with BMI's over 30… Besides 25% of 320 million is still more than the whole of Australia, so they'd still sink quicker than us

  36. lydia says – reply to this

    136

    its true everyone is fat

    luckily im not :)

  37. willo says – reply to this

    AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE…..OI OI OI

  39. aus says – reply to this

    139

America has a population over 300 million and Australia only has over 20 million. so clearly the statistics are going by the amount of people and no matter what america will always be the most obese country, the saddest part is things like super sized meals, how can a county do something like that when obesity problems are so huge, i will never forget an italian exchange student who came over here and we also had an american and we were at the shopping centres and he said "gosh australians are so fat" eveyone laughed and the american girl said "this is nothing compared to america"

  40. 140

but peoples images of americans are still the fatso fast food eaters……and peoples images of australians are hot surfers …….

  41. Cathr says – reply to this

    141

Maybe Perez thinks Australia has a better chance than the US of turning the trend. ;) I have no doubt that there are more obese people in the US than in Australia, both number and percentagewise.

  42. Kat says – reply to this

    142

I cant stand how people come read this website every day only to comment on how much they hate it…yet, like me, they couldnt live with out it… :P

I'm aussie, and overweight, and i've been MASSIVELY inspired by the effort Perez has put in to changing his life, and its inspired me to do the same. I've already lost 10 kg… thanks perez and screw the haters. PS I love how people say perez made this up when its a link to Oz's national newspaper…

  43. ellen says – reply to this

    143

i think that the problem is mainly american companies infiltrating the australian market with cheap, unhealthy "fast" food. In the more affluent areas of australia, less people are obese because of more money to buy the necessities for a healthy diet. However in the poorer areas, many are left with no other option. 50% is a huge number that may initially surprise many, myself included. I personally know only two obese people out of many thousands that i know. However, i have been to areas where 9 out of 10 people walking down the street are obese. This is terrible, yet nothing is being done.

Oh and drop pills and take coke. keeps you thin :)

  44. thetr says – reply to this

Re: kebug17 – Just because you're starting to eat healthy and exercise does not give you the right to comment on fat ppl if you're still fat

  45. damei says – reply to this

    145

wow .. australia overtakes the US for obesity .. i didn't realise perez mummy lost that much weight .. and for all you skinny/fit/obsessed/absorbed cunts telling us to go on a diet or eat an apple .. you can all eat my fat sweaty arse (AND IT STINKS) .. there's a lot more too it ! think about it moles

  46. 146

They are about right. Most people here don't know what obese looks like. Most obese people think they are "carrying a bit around the middle". Like the drinking thing. Australians drink too much but it's justified by camaraderie…same as the "fat" thing. Due to clothing companies upgrading their sizings, a size 8 today measures up to a size 10 of 20 years ago. The fabric shapes have changed because as humanity is getting lazier and lazier, its body is changing also.

We eat too much. Too many people deny emotional eating as their problem. Too many people laugh it off or say "everybody is fat these days" like it's okay.

Yes. Every Australian could do better. But, we live in a world where excuses and finger pointing are de rigor and taking responsibility for one's own actions seems almost a crime.

C'mon Aussies. Get your shit together and lose the blubber. Stop making excuses. Where's your pride?

(PS. As a health nut I do not fit into this category. I am classed as underweight due to low body fat content but this is due to athleticism, not an eating disorder - I rebel where ever I can. I don't want to be just like "you".)

  47. anony says – reply to this

    147

Regardless of people's opinions on Perez's weight and the comparisons made between Australia and the United States, these are the cold hard FACTS. Being an Australian, I understand where people are coming from being defensive and in denial - it's only human nature. The main issue is, throughout the world obesity is becoming an increasing problem, as people are not aware of the damage particular foods can do to our bodies. Diet and exercise should be large factors in our lives, irrespective of whether we like them or not. Fast Food and Junk Food have their nicknames for a reason, and the food pyramid is there for a reason. We need to start thinking about looking after our bodies rather than treating them in such a way as the 9 million Australian adults are, for example. What kind of example are adults setting us kids by somewhat encouraging this problem.

    154

I am an Australian American, or an American Australian, who knows which way around it goes.
When I first moved to Oz, I was sick of hearing the crap about how fat Americans were, geezuz shut the f up! Now there are people whinging cause Aus is a fat nation too. Most western nations are.
To the people who blame America for Australia being fat, shut your pie hole.

and blaming the cost of living for being fat… puhleazzz.. I didn't know going out for a run, walk , jog or doing weights using your body cost $$$.. geez, how have I been getting away with it for free all this time??

Anyways people shouldn't be attacking each other about the obesity , maybe should focus more on doing something about it…

plus they just had in the news that the BMI isn't really a great indicator…duh how long did that take?!!

  55. emily says – reply to this

  56. me says – reply to this

The sad thing is, it is partly the "american influence" particuarly the fast food culture, that has contributed to this statistic.

  57. mary says – reply to this

    157

    Perez is obese!

  58. aj says – reply to this

    158

This study has come up with a general equilibrium that has australians being overweight. "a boom in fast food and a decline in physical activity" this is all due to american input. when you are all voting this year, you better fucking think twice, cause you are NOT just voting for your country. AMERICA has a massive input into how Australia is treated and operates as a country. Your vote for presidency not only affects Aus, it also GREATLY affects the world at large and ALL of our futures.
We are the result of our actions. Australis's obesity epidemic is the result of the introduction of America fast food and AMERICAN VALUES (i.e ignornace of true weight issues). Our health is not a political toy, it is our future. Vote properly America. Your choices make our lives.

  59. Starb says – reply to this

    159

Shocked, Honestly i don't believe this whatsoever, I've been to oz thousands of times, as well as America, and i can honestly say i've seen maybe to overweight people in Australia, and they were American tourists, so obviously if this is true, there's some secret obese society underground clogging up the census. in comparison to go anywhere in America and having seen large people everywhere all the time, I live in canada, and i also see plenty of big people here, and even then (i hate saying it) but i've seen more fat people Her ein Canada than i ever have in oz.

Re: wes – If we got rid of about 50 million Mexicans, at least all the women we wouldn't be as fat. Ever seen a skinny Mexican mother? How about skinny Afro mother? Few and far between. Look what they eat! It ain't sushi. Pork, beans, tortillas, deep fried everything that has fuzz on it. They live for BBQs and beer. Now the public schools stop having mandatory PE because the little shitz are too embarrassed to be seen naked. The other reason is, the schools don't want to get sued by having alot of fat little porkers dropping dead of heart attacks at 15. Word. War Fat!

oh, and i'd love to see where Australia would be if we hadn't ever had to deal with american influences. even just 20 yrs ago, as we were rising to a new multicultural high, if we could have just elimiated the american influence. At least we're still the top swimming team in the WORLD!!!! SUCK SHIT USA!!!! Watch our world records burn down your pools!!

I have read these articles in every Western city I have lived in the world. i am a proud Australian who loves her food, has n executive 80 hour a week job and yet still manged to surf and swim and run at every given moment…and read Perez when I need some reality check of how lucky I am. I now live in shanghai and don't get the chance o exercise as much as I did in OZ. Now that I am here, I have put on a little wait but am still a tidy size.

The reality is, when I lived in New York for 3 years, I saw more obesity than anywhere else I have lived in the world,

Australia's biggest mistake has been accepting the influence of the grossly indulgent culture of America in it's worst form. From disgusting trash TV, Fast Food instead of our wonderful fresh produce ( that the MAJORITY of Australia is still blessed enough to partake) and the lies that lead us into wars that shouldn't happen.

Australia is a rich and beautiful land full of people who actually walk rather than drive and live an out door life. Because we can in a land free of pollution, traffic jams and a plastic fantastic society.

America is no longer the world super power….trust me…I live in the new one…China.

America is now just the land of Super fat people with super huge egos and a super massive health care crisis.

How's that working out for you USA?

  75. BBNZ says – reply to this

    175

You gotta remember Aussie has WAY less population than USA, so US. has WAY more fat people. I am Aussie and I know very few overweight people. The portions sizes in Australia are WAY smaller than the US. Since when do you go to a restaurant and get free food (salads/soup/bread) before you get your meal then get a meal SO huge you can only eat 1/3-1/2 of it and have to take a DOOGY bag home….the USofA! And the US. has unlimited refills (soda)…. SODA kills. The USA must want its people to be fat or else they would cut back on all this. Since when is unhealthy food ALOT cheaper to purchase than healthy food. The USA needs to cut back on serving sizes and the 64 ounce soda….disgusting! Its a consipriacy!

Perez I used to be your biggest fan, but really, please stick to what you do best. Your a celeb gossip blogger, is it really your place to be commenting on the health issues of other countries? Especially considering your own personal appearance (and I commend you for trying to get fit but really, maybe maintain a healthy weight for a few years before you start slamming other people). Just get over yourself, stop alienating your fans with your stupid posts that have nothing to do with celebs. I don't want to sound immature but at the moment, the only words that come to mind when I think about you are 'total douche'.

    187

I'm not even Australian, and I have to agree that the stats can be misleading. The article says that the sample population was people going to get their blood pressure checked. So chances are that older, less healthy people will be more concerned about their blood pressure than a younger, skinnier, healthier person. So the sample population is biased.

  88. 188

Re: Heath – He is you dumbass! Keep up.
Yeah, wow, can't believe we're not the fattest anymore. Crazy. It's not about your weight though - it's about what you eat, and how much you exercise. People need to start understanding that….

  89. natsk says – reply to this

I'm Australian, that is such a load of bull shit. I think every country has their share of obese people. Note to al the dickheads who make up these stats, GET A LIFE!.

  90. Jen says – reply to this

    190

This shouldn't come as a huge surprise, I've certainly noticed people getting bigger over the years especially - younger children and early teens.

I'm my opinion it is largely socio-economic, cheaper food is just not healthy. We spend a fortune buying organic vegetables and good quality meat, not many people could justify the huge expense.

Such a shame, we really did have the fit and healthy population not that long ago……….

thx for posting this Perez and drawing attention to the shameful fact that Australia is now ranked the fattest in the world. it's sad to see the denial in a lot of the comments. fact is, tourists don't see the obese epidemic because obese people don't go often go to Bondi but take a train to a suburban shopping malls and you'll glimpse the extent of the problem. the doctor who posted is right - obesity is a major health concern that takes up a lot of the beds in our over-extended and under-resourced hospitals. but ultimately, obesity is not a government responsibility, it's a personal responsibility.

this article is crap, i live in australia and have also been to america and we are no where near as fat as your country (no offence) but we dont have wheelchairs for obese people at our theme parks like you. there is a massive difference, there is always gonna be fat people but arent you slightly hipocritical. i mean you aint exactly skinny. and anyway how do you define skinny different bodies work on different people. so dont judge other people wanker

Re: aussi – Aussi you are right on. Amazing how in denial everyone is. I worked in several suburban shopping centres here in Australia, and I'll tell you people are getting huger and huger and there are more and more of them. It was disgusting to see parents buying donuts for their kids at 8.30 in the morning. And noone is allowed to say a thing in case the truth offends. Yet with my BMI of just under 18, total strangers think they have a right to comment on my size. (Too small as they see it, my doctor says "perfect") I get so frustrated; and frankly I'm sick of looking at all the blubber that these behemoths insist on exposing whereever possible!! Do these people have no fucking pride?? Respect yourselves!!!!

OH, YEAH , WHEN HE'S SAYING NICE THINGS ABOUT YOU, IT'S OK. BUT WHEN HE (SHOCK HORROR) CRITICIZES, IT'S LIKE, FUCK PEREZ!! GET A GRIP YOU STUPID COUNTRY…. WE CAN ACCEPT OUR FAULTS, SO FACE UP TO YOUR OWN - YOU'RE NOT THAT SPECIAL! I'm so sick if their s**t. Idiots…

Australia is like any other western country. There are fatties and skinnies and all the rest. From my observation, the people who live along the coast line are usually fit and healthy, but westies and country bumpkins are fat and lazy. Also, it is interesting to note that nearly all single mothers I come into contact with are fat and unattractive. Its like divorce sends women into depression and they eat and stop taking care of their appearance…Im from the beaches, and its much like LA, you can never be too thin or too tanned here.

why don't you sort out America's fat asses first before trying to change Australia's.

I find that really interesting, where I live on the beaches there are hardly any fat people. What I find interesting is that they took the data from "a national blood pressure screening day", who goes to those things unless you are over-weight and worried about your blood pressure??? No wonder the percentage is so high. I'm sure if the data was taken from "anorexia screening day" we'd be the skinniest nation in the the fucking world. They should take the tests again under an unbiased foundation.
