Who's Gonna Get The Job???

Filed under: Icky Icky Poo > Media Minute

russert.jpg

MSNBC talking heads Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann are reportedly jockeying for Tim Russert's Meet the Press job.

Matthews was allegedly talking about his strategy to win the MTP anchor spot at Russert's DC memorial on Wednesday!

Eww. Tacky. Tacky. Tacky.

Matthews has of course denied the claim.

Olbermann supposedly said he'll quit if he doesn't get the job.

MSNBC has denied these crazy rumors.

A source reports that Russert wanted Chuck Todd, the NBC News political director he hired, to succeed him.

Is this Todd guy any good?

We've never even seen him on TV!

Good luck with your search, NBC!

    Re: LRM

False. They've only announced that he's hosting this week. With his duties as the anchor of NBC nightly news, he'd have to work 7 days a week to permanently host MTP. Not gonna happen.

Obviously you don't watch MSNBC news - Chuck Todd is on ALL the time.

Quit spreading rumors…research it first. Check out Keith's show from Thursday when he vehemently denied this rumor and sited its source.

Chuck Todd is a very intelligent and knowledgable in the field of politics and is well-versed with the workings of Capitol Hill. He would be a good candidate for the job, but I personally would rather see David Gregory in the position. (He's been the head White House correspondent for NBC for a few years now and isn't afraid to ask the tough questions.)

Chuck Todd is incredible. Tim Russert probably hired him because he, unlike Chris and Keith, is able to maintain a sense of dignity and evenhandedness in a work environment that can be so polarized to the left or the right.

Perez - This is a bullshit rumor. In fact, Olbermann has said that he's "not qualified" and doesn't want the job.

Chuck Todd is fantastic - definitely the smartest political analyst on tv right now. No one even comes close. However, I've never seen him actually interview anyone, which is the other important aspect of hosting MTP. He's really great though.

I vote for Chuck Todd. Would not watch Keith for one second - much too biased for even uber-liberal NBC. Matthews is biased, but not as bad as Keith.

    107

I don't believe about Matthews and Olbermann. They are both successful in their own right, and Olbermann is no where near as objective as Russert ever was.

Chris Todd was on MSNBC all the time during the Primary season discussing the numbers. I think he certainly has the smarts to take over MTP, but I think he'd need to really do his homework so the politicians and strategists that come on the show as guests aren't able to get away with anything.

Andrea Mitchell has replaced Russert in the past when he was away, and I'll bet she'll likely pinch-hit until a replacement is announced.

Chuck Todd is HOT and would be the best person to succeed Tim. And, to the person who's never seen him on TV, they don't watch. Chuck is on TV all the time. He's a very good looking, smart, kind person and I, for one, would love to see him on Sunday mornings, as sad as it's going to be not to see Tim anymore…..

Chuck Todd is on MSNBC all the time — especially during the recent presidential primaries. He's VERY good. His primary predictions were all eerily accurate. He's a big numbers geek, much like Tim Russert. Russert is, of course, irreplaceable, but Todd would do a fine job in his position.

KEITH IS NOT A TRUE GENTLEMAN!!!!!!!!! HE IS THE WORST PERSON OF THE DAY, EVERY DAY, ON MSNBC. I CAN'T STAND HIM AND WATCH EVERY OTHER SHOW BUT HIS. HE IS A MEAN, ARROGANT ASSHOLE AND HE IS THE LAST PERSON THEY SHOULD CHOOSE TO SUCCEED POOR TIM. HE HAS NO CLASS OR MANNERS OR TACT. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. Chuck or Andrea or Brian or Tom, who won't want to work much anymore, are the only people they should consider.

Chuck Todd is amazing! He actually has quite a cult following. check out www.chucktoddfacts.com or www.vivachucktodd.com. in a way he is a lot like russert, he doesnt talk about his opinions or who he supports, he backs up all of his claims with hard numbers, look out for him, he really is great

I Love and respect Keith Olbermann !!

  18. Missi says – reply to this

    118

No, nobody can replace him–and after having the privilege of meeting him and seeing him around DC in quite moments with his family–I mean that in so many ways.

I've met a lot of broadcast journalists over the years and worked with them. They just don't come better than Tim. And after learning what a great boss he was I wish I would have asked him for a job. None of the bosses I had in the biz hold a micro candle to him.

Having said that the only person I thought of to try to fill the void was Chuck Todd. He's solid. I've watched him throughout this presidential campaign, sometimes kibbutzing with Tim, and I think he's cut from the same cloth. He knows his stuff. While I've enjoy Olberman's writing I think he and Matthews are too bombastic. Plus Olberman, especially, is too biased, even if I agree with most of what he says.

Keith Olbermann is a total joke, a clown. He will never ever, will be able to get the respect of the people, only the respect of the left liberals. This job it's to big for him. He is an asshole.

If you've never seen Chuck Todd on TV, then its confirmed — You really don't know what you're talking about. Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews are much classier folk than you are making them out to be. Shame on you! My vote goes to David Gregory.

  23. NOlbe says – reply to this

    123

Olbermann is one of the most despised people in "tv journalism". No one will watch him- he was fired from ESPN for his nasty tirades and poor behavior. And you need to learn a lesson here- NO ONE is irreplaceable. So don't overwork and don't get a huge ego- because when you die, someone else will get YOUR job and within a couple of weeks no one remembers the last guy. So do your job, and do it well, but don't think of yourself as irreplaceble. NO ONE on the planet is irreplaceable. If Olbermann gets that job, that show is DEAD. No one wants a nasty, bombastic jackass on sunday morning. And really, no one wants partisan politics either. I don't think matthews can be unbiased either.

Usually I dont write on these things but I am going to respond to this ridiculous post. I completely agree with Betty.
Yesterday, on Keith Olbermann's countdown– he addressed this false allegation. Apparently, some bitch from the NY Post decided to start this rumor. Obviously, being a tacky, right-winged bitch, she had nothing better to do that create such a lie.
The truth is that at the service, one of Chris Mathew's friends suggested that he be the successor. However, Chris Mathew's said he wasnt interested and quickly changed the topic.
As for Olbermann, he said clearly on his show that he is not interested in this job, nor does he feels that he is qualified enough to fill the position.

Neither of those two flamers has the right to replace him. Russert was a liberal and democrat his entire life, but that never stopped him from showing both sides of a story. He was the only one in the business who would give conservatives the time of day. Both Olbermann and Matthews are unfit to replace him. Neither of them are half the man Russert was.

  28. Fat M says – reply to this

Chuck Todd would be a WONDERFUL replacement for Tim Russert. He always knows the numbers and facts and can easily bring this expertise into his questioning.

Thursday night's Countdown with Keith Olbermann proved that there is NO truth in this story. He openly confronts the report and DENIES it piece by piece…

  35. Kris says – reply to this

    135

100% Yes for Chuck Todd. He is the only guy reminding me of Russert. No wonder Russert asked him to work for him 18 months ago. Chuck Todd seems to have encyclopedic knowledge and is very humble. You can often see him explaining polls and decyphering numbers. Altough Tim Russert cannot be replaced, I was hoping somebody would bring up Chuck Todd's name. I have never noticed any partisanship from him, while Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann are openly biased.

  36. kelpr says – reply to this

    136

Olbermann would be an awful host. Russert was neutral on all issues and discussions- so he was trusted. Olbermann is waaaaaaaaaay too far to the left and would throw an immediate question of agenda shaping into "Meet the Press". The show needs an unbiased host, which Olbermann is not even close to being.

  37. Maril says – reply to this

    137

It's well known that Keith Olbermann is narcissistic, self-involved douchebag, so that doesn't surprise me. I used to like Chris Matthews (watched his show and bought a book he wrote), but inn the past several years, he's views and attitude have become almost unrecognizable. It's almost as if he's totally out of touch with reality and has become increasingly devoid of class. If either of these guys get the job, NBC can count on at least one less viewer of 'Meet the Press'.

Even though Tim Russert was not the original host of the show, no one will ever replace him.

  38. Mia says – reply to this

    138

I agree, NOBODY can replace the late, treat Tim Russert! But Chuck Todd would be at the top of my list as his successor. Chuck Todd oversees MSNBC First Read (their politcal blog), and is a very intelligent, unbiased political analyst. He has a lot of great bi-partisan qualities like Tim Russert.

Perez, please, please stay out of politics honey!! I can't believe you don't know who Chuck Todd is. He's on MSNBC tv just about everyday!! Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann have him on as a guest all the time!

  39. Sigh says – reply to this

How have you never seen Chuck Todd on TV? Have you ever even watched Meet The Press or anything on MSNBC for that matter? I hope he gets the position, he'd be an excellent moderator for Meet the Press, but he could never replace Tim.

And anyways, I can't believe that Chris Matthews would be so uncouth, or that Keith Olbermann would say something like that. Where is this information coming from?

  42. Blunt says – reply to this

    142

Mathews and Olbermann are commies and unwatchable. Why don't they hire a real American to do the show, someone who loves America and is conservative? That would be great if Olbermann quit that fucking loser!!!

David Gregory will be awesome tho

Keith Olbermann comes off as someone who doesn't even really like politics and that he is in the business just for his ego and his ego alone. Chris Matthews is at times scatter-brained but at least he lives and breathes politics as a passion, he's not a phony.

To all the Olberloon defenders on here, seriously, you all need your meds checked as much as Krazy Kommenting Keith does. Both Olberwingnut and Matthews are complete loons and MSNBC is a total disgrace of a network. Russert was the closest thing that NBC or its sub-MSNBC had to a credible journalists. I have to wonder about the mental stability of people that watch Countdown. How much credibility does the man have when has NEVER NOT ONCE brought on a dissenter. That's a liberal for you. They can't defend their positions as they are never sounded in reason or logic. So someone like Krazy Keith can just continue to spew his hate and no one can challenge him on it. It's the most pathetic group of political losers I have ever seen.

  51. WTF?? says – reply to this

You're becoming the biggest laughing stock lately. Get your shit togeter and hire some fact-checkers or stay out of politics. You ought to be embarassed as hell dude.

I second the David Gregory vote, he is very in keeping with Russert's calm, respectable, educated, informative manner of television journalism. I LOVE Chris Matthews, but he's wrong for the job, I'd hate to see him lose his funny edge. That Olberman guy sucks, he's full of SHIT and not respectable, and what's up with his head, it's hard to look at him for too long, so fugg.

I read Perez everyday and I'm not easily offended, however this is outrageous and totally not true. Keith Olberman talked about this last night on his show. That is sick to think that someone would write such garbage. Chuck Todd is a very good journalist, but no one person could replace Mr. Russert. In the future you should think twice before making two innocent men, like Keith and Chris, look like jerks, when the real jerk is the one writing the trash. You should be ashamed of yourself. You just lost a reader.

Re: Mark – Actually, Sophie is right! Usually O'Reiley beats Olberman every night, but last week (when Tim died) and this week (during his funeral coverage and etc.) they actually beat Fox News in the ratings, which is a big deal, since they are like the American Idol of news: totally unstoppable, and a complete ratings jugarnaut.
    *
It's a shame that it took the death and passing of Tim Russert in order for people to pay more attention to the channel, because I LOVE it personally, and I'm no lefty-liberal either. Who came up with this nonsense, that it's a "liberals-only chnannel" anyway?? With commentators on there like Joe Scarborough, Pat Buchanan, Tucker Carlson and Chris Mattews, who's an Independant, there are PLENTY of diverse political positions on there! A helluva lot more diverse than Fox News, who's only got Alan Colmes and that other dude from "Red Eye", MMMkay?? A liberal person isn't even allowed his/her own show on there for crying out loud. Even the 1 or 2 they've got on there have to share the screen with a flaming conservative. Jeesh… talk about bias! MSNBC News is the ONLY place for politics right now as far as I'm concerned.
    *
Keith Olberman (on MSNBC) is a liberal it's true, but that's ONE hour out of a 24 hour news day dude. Does Fox News devote even ONE HOUR to a liberal's point of view on THEIR channel??? I rest my case. At least on MSNBC, a conservative can get his own show for crying out loud.

    159

    Hey Zexy,

I know you don't even read these comments, but Chuck Todd is amazing. He's usually on during primary contests. He explains all of the delegate and electoral math. He explains which states are or are not in contention for each candidate and why. He works mostly behind the scenes and they bring him out when they need someone with a level head and brilliant mind, to explain complex voter math issues to the viewers. You never really know who he's rooting for, which is good.

  66. C'mo says – reply to this

    166

Perez, you are in dire need of a fact checker before you make these outrageously spiteful and inflammatory claims that have no merit. If you watched Olbermann's show last night, he refuted both claims . He said he was not qualified for Russert's position, let alone would he quit if he didn't get it. He lambasted the tabloid writer and named her (she looks like a man, though, so that is using the term loosely) his "worst person in the world".

  67. Syl says – reply to this

    167

    This story is false.

From last night's Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

As we mourned Tim Russert yesterday in Washington, a Pennsylvania acquaintance of Chris‘ came up to him and said, you should be on the list to succeed him. Chris said he didn‘t want to be on any such list. He changed the topic immediately. He asked this Pennsylvania man, who was not his agent—no agent would be crass enough to bring up such a topic now or there—for advice on a speech Chris is to give at Gettysburg, PA next week. What he should say, how should he approach it, the speech.

As for myself, not only have I never threatened to quit if I don‘t get Tim Russert‘s job, not own have I not vied for it, not only has the subject not even come up between me and anybody who will be involved in this sad task, not only did the Post make this up, not only is the very subject of Tim Russert‘s job not appropriate now, as anyone with a shadow of a heart would understand. But I don‘t even consider myself qualified for it.

I loved Meet the Press with Tim Russert. Chuck Todd would be great. He knows his stuff. Olbermann and Matthews slant the news and do not report it like journalist should do. Let's give it time. Tim Russert has been gone a week.

Although I enjoy watching Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann, I dont think he's "mature" enough for Meet the Press. Chuck Todd would be an excellent choice. He's already the political director for NBC, so he has the knowledge and tact to carry out the job. Watch him during election coverage, he's brilliant.

Chuck is good but what about other network journalists. Katie Couric or Anderson Cooper?
There's no one like Tim out there. He was the best

Olbermann has a less than "0" chance of getting the job. He is widely disliked. The one person who left the comment that Olbermann's ratings are higher than O'Reilly's is 100% wrong, it is not even close.

Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman are not worthy. They are horrible and don't deserve this spot.

It's a total lie…neither Mathews nor Olberman are vying for the job…..Mathews wasn't talking about the job at the service…he was talking with someone about a speech this person was to make and asked mathews about a few things……consider the source…..NY Post

About the replacement MSNBC AND NBC president is going to take his time deciding Tim Russert is a hard act to follow. It won't be Chris Mathews or Keith Olberman they are both to liberal. Chuck Todd isn't ready yet not enough experience. It will be someone you least expect. It definely won't be Andrea Mitchell she can't interview for nothing. Obsolutely someone you least expect.

Chuck Todd is the perfect choice, smart, eloquent, and he lives and breathes politics! The perfect candidate, who's not in it to get his face on TV, but to inform the public, unlike that asshole Matthews.
Tim Russert was also quite an out of the blue-choice for host of mtp 17 years ago!

perez, you idiot, if you watched NEWS instead of E!, you'd know Chuck is on often and that these stories are untrue.

Absolute nonsense. Olbermann said on air that he did not consider himself qualified for the job and that the rumor about Matthews was also not true. The conversation rumored was between Matthews and his manager and was about a speech Matthews was to give. And Chuck Todd is great. I hope he gets it. He's like the math geek version of Russert.

  95. GYFSP says – reply to this

    195

Get your facts straight, Perez. Olbermann spoke directly to these allegations YESTERDAY on Countdown and not only emphatically stated he didn't find himself qualified, nor was he seeking the position on MTP, he also set the record straight about the conversation Matthews was "supposedly" overheard having w/his agent (it wasn't) at the funeral. STOP playng into Fixed News and all their bs.

A big yes to Chuck Todd. A big no to the others mentioned. As for David Gregory, maybe it's just me, but David Gregory seems to be a little too impressed with David Gregory… seems too into himself to be a serious journalist. I imagine him looking in the mirror and posing a lot, and having a bumper sticker that says "I heart David". Bleh.

Mario or PerezHilton whatever your name is, are you really that ignorant? Do you or any of your plebes ever do your research before posting? Chuck Todd is the political director for NBC and has been on TV many, many times this election season. One day, people will see you for the clueless gossip you really are and your bubble will burst. Good luck!

Perez knows gossip. Which is why he knows the more angrily someone denies a rumor, the more likely it is to be true. The second that Russert dropped dead you wanna know what was foremost on Olbermann & Matthews minds? Can I have his job?
