I have been to Montego Bay several times and as long as you are not in peoples face about it, it's really not an issue. I love Jamaica for the food and the beaches, not because I can run around like a screaming Queen. The country relies heavily on Tourism, and they will take your dollars regardless. The problems are not for gays and lesbians who visit the country it's for those who live there. When it's a case of being tortured and killed because of your sexuality then it becomes a serious problem and there should be laws protecting the Human Rights of people. How embarrassing to be a part of a culture that is so ignorant and pathetically backwards. Have they evolved at all as a people? They say that 1 in 10 people within any society is gay or bisexual. Such hatred and anger really needs to be closely looked at, and more privileged and evolved countries have every right to intervene.
And for any of you "straight" people that don't really see anything wrong with this picture, just imagine it was one of your children, or your Brother or Sister having an ear cut off and or beaten with a bat because of the the lives that they lead in private, behind closed doors. This issue is not about trying to make other countries conform to the ideals of the modern world, the point is that it is wrong to covict people and even more wrong to kill someone based on one aspect of who they are, namely thier orientation. This is a human rights issue, and no one deserves to lose their life or have thier life hindered because of one aspect of their personality. I visited Jamaica last year. One night I went to a concert with thousands of people attending. Every second lyric was "kill the buttyman". It was very aggressive. As a gay man or actually as a human being I felt very out of place. I feel sorry for gay Jamaicans.

Sadly much of the Caribbean is homophobic due to the majority of the island dwellers being of African descent and practicing a strange kind of Christian mixed with Voodoo religion. But Curacao is pretty good, really any island that's French or Dutch is basically gonna be gay tolerant since the natives there aren't quite so ignorant to the joys of gay sex.

I just want you to know that I am a Jamaican and all my friends are gay! Yes, I am the first to admit the ignorance of my people, but very few Jamaicans would ever become hostile towards gay visitors. My country isn't very open to PDA in general, gay or straight, but overall we are a warm, welcoming set of people.
The point is: Go to Jamaica! It's the most beautiful, fun, fantastic island in the Caribbean! Nobody will hurt you. And if you're in Kingston, stop by The Terrace Bar in Southdale Plaza. It's my bar and we are VERY WELCOMING to gays, lesbians and anybody else.

I went to Anguilla with my mom and these two gay guys were checking in ahead of us and they were having some kind of difficulty checking in and I never saw them on the beach the whole five days I was there, I think they got turned away and sent somewhere else. And I doubt their credit was bad because gays always have lots of money. The Caribbean, with very few exceptions, is notoriously hostile to the Friends of Dorothy and Sisters of Sappho. There was a famous case a few years back where a CBS (I think) News employee was queerbashed in St. Maarten, which is Dutch so you'd think it wouldn't happen there. So it's not just Jamaica–although it's definitely the worst!

I live in Jamaica currently, Im originally from Vermont, the first state in the US to allow civil unions. But look how long it took the Us to finally be more accepting of homosexuality and people are still fighting for rights today. Eventually Jamaica will come around but it takes time…you are trying to reverse hundereds of years of people in Jamaica being taught that it is wrong.
Perez its definitely not right for you to tell people not to visit Jamaica. That would be like me telling a black person not to visit the US because there are still alot of racist people there.
There is actually a large homosexual population and people are becoming a little more accepting. A yes the police do something about crimes that commited against homosexual, they treat them the same way they treat any other crime.
I love Jamaica, its a beautiful place with a rich culture and amazing history. Before condemning a place Perez why dont you come and visit and then you can make up your mind.

Stop talking shit people about how he's judging them. Sorry but its not humane to rush up in peoples homes and hack them to bits because their gay, let alone deny them constitutional rights based on religious texts with skewed meanings. Because the fact is that Jamaicans are black, and poorer than white middle class Americans, consequently they are going to be more religious and conservative. Thus they use their so called "good book" lets not forget, only a lines, picked out of certain chapters to justify and entire slew of homophobic policies. Perez is right…don't go to Jamaica, go to Mexico or some other country that hasn't allowed homophobia to permeate its beliefs.
Lot's of people think that killing someone for their beliefs is okay as long as they don't have to see it. I guess, following the logic of some of the bloggers then we should be fine with anyone who believes anything because it is their belief. Let's have some examples: child abusers, rapists, racists, etc. All of those people commit crimes that involve harm, whether it be physical or mental but that seems to be fine because it is a belief held.
Also, what about religious indoctrination? Presumabley, if you hold a religious belief, no matter how narrow the scope, that is okay too? The irony here is that America is waging a war in Iraq in order to "spread democracy" while in it's own country the missing link a.k.a. Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Hardcore department is practicing beliefs that are on par with animals (one male to however many females and you have to have genetic testing to figure out the father) But this is okay, because it is their belief.

The reality is that no one should boycott Jamaica. You should send lots and lots of gays there on vacation and spend lots of money for a couple of years and then boycott them after they get used to having cash from tourism. lol
Liking or disliking gays is one thing, everyone is entitled to their feelings on the matter. But NO ONE can support violence and/or murder! In Jamaica, these people are denied even basic police protection from violent mobs. Homosexuality or murder - who are the immoral ones?
